According to the devs its a big world with plenty of dungeons and towns to explore most of which are optional. I'd say it'll be like borderlands in the way the world is as a best guess.

So in saying its an open world, can you do all of the collectibles after completion? Or is it like you hit a point of no return? I have really just started and wasn't sure if I should do all my optional stuff as I play through or wait til later

This is not an open world game like Fallout 3, in fact it's not even close in size.

The map is actually rather small and there is no way to see the world map in its entirety which kind of indicates that they didn't want you to see that it really isn't all that big.

See? Things like this warrant a bump for something over 12 months old. Kudos to you for searching, sir.

There are a few items which if you miss, you are shit out of luck because you can't go back and get them. You will need to restart the game to get it, which will obviously reset your items collected.

I'd recommend you do them as you go. I have been doing this myself and as tedious as it can be, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Oh I see, thanks. I was really only playing this while I was in between games but I am surprised at how much I am actually enjoying it. I wasn't sure if I would after my brother told me he hated it and some reviews weren't great but I guess its a matter of 'each to their own'

I bought it on release, played a few hours and got over it. Then once I got into this completing games thing, I went back and tried it again. It is a lot of fun and being an open-world game with some limitations (can't progress in some parts without meeting a particular person, using a particular item) it is one that's underrated.

It does what bioshock does, gives you a linear story but you get plenty of areas to explore before the game makes you go in a certain direction. It does it quite well actually.

You mean it was PUBLISHED by the same people that published fallout, it was DEVELOPED by the people who made classic games like doom, quake, and wolfenstien. There is a major difference between the two.
