Hm, I think it was either Halo or Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Besides the few games with a little pixel of blood here and there, the first truly violent game I remember playing was Mortal Kombat in the arcades back in '93.

I had read about the game in magazines and it looked so cool. My family and I went out of state on vacation and we come across a 'fun center' that had go-karts, putt-putt, batting cages, and video games. And whaddya know -- there was an MK machine right at the front. I nearly pissed myself.

My mom gave me $2.00 and they went outside with my brother to ride go-karts.

I approached the machine and I could feel my knees shaking from excitement.

Amazingly, only 2 people were at the cabinet and they were battling it out when I walked up. Neither seemed very good and the only move they appeared to know was Raiden's superman move.

The EGM mag that I had read included some of the special moves and the only ones I remembered was Scorpion's harpoon and his fatality. So after one of the guys lost, he asked if I wanted to play and I said "Sure, but go easy on me." I spent the first round learning the controls and I tested the harpoon move and it worked. My opponent looked at me like, "Oh, so he *does* know how to play!" and then he started spamming Raiden's superman special.

I got nervous and he destroyed me.

I let him play the CPU and he subsequently lost and then left.

The other guy hung around and we started talking about the game. He told me Raiden's special move (yup, the only move he knew) and I asked him if he had seen a fatality. He said that he hadn't, but he had heard about them. I proceeded to play the game against the CPU and I chose Scorpion. I wanted to perform a fatality so bad and the guy could see it on my face, so he stood back and just watched.

The first opponent was easy. "FINISH HIM!" Okay, this is it. I held block and pressed Up, Up. Nothing.

The second opponent killed me.

Okay, let's try again.

Once again, I destroyed the first opponent. "FINISH HIM!" Moved Scorpion back a little further, held block and pressed Up, Up. Nothing.

The second opponent killed me.

Okay, last .50 cent... gotta do this.

Took out the first opponent. "FINISH HIM!" Moved Scorpion back a little bit further, held block and pressed Up, Up... and success!!! I think I screamed like a little girl. The random stranger high fived and congratulated me.

That was 20 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Been a big MK fan ever since.

-----------

tl;dr

Mortal Kombat is awesome.

The first M-rated game I ever played was either Half-Life or Quake 2, I can't remember. Then there was Aliens vs. Predators, and then Quake III: Arena, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and then Halo. Such good games...after that, Counterstrike held my attention for a long time, along with Half-Life 2 and Fable. Good memories.

Conker's Bad Fur Day was amazing. It was one of the first M-rated games I played as well. I'm still hoping it gets an XBLA release, but I'm not holding my breath.

I guess thats why I turned into a gamer. My dad used to load up Terminal Velocity or Duke Nukem and we would play together. He would shoot and I would move, or he would fly and I would shoot. Really miss the old days when my dad wasn't such an ass about how my life turned out :/

Why? Are you that famous international criminal I keep hearing about, who goes around robbing banks of their money, and young men of their virginity?

Sounds like a movie nope, other reasons. But I that playing my first M rated game so early, and handling the situation so well, caused my parents to not think twice about buying M rated games like Halo or whatever else I was playing back then.

To be fair, the Mature rating is really a floor. The blood and gore of Halo, despite being rated "M", is nowhere near as graphic and ubiquitous as the blood and gore of, say, F.E.A.R. 2.

The M rating is a fucking joke now. ESRB is a bunch of pussies. If a game has girls in it, it automatically gets "sexual themes" just to bump it up to the M rating.

Because of the increase in visualization that games feel the need to have. If there is a point where boobs can be shown, more and more games are seizing the opportunity. It wasn't always like that, so it doesn't change the fact that just because a girl is shown, it has to be M rated.

That totally sucks! Of course I might have been more social, but I've had a lot of memories over the years. Not to mention 13 year olds taught me how to curse properly and diss other gamers' moms!

There weren't ratings back then, but I'd say my first was probably Porky's on the Atari 2600. The pink, vaguely female-looking thing in the shower wriggled. Scandalous!

For me it would have to be GTA: Vice City. I was only 8 - 9 at the time. My mother had no problem with me playing it, and to be honest I was more interested in playing the main storyline than going on rampages.
When I did rampage though I was prepared, Assault Rifles, RPG's, Chainsaw, and my handy Sniper Rifle. I found the perfect rooftop where I could sit and take down all of the cops and helicopters without getting hit much at all, problem was that I always ran out of ammo before I ran out of health. For a 8 - 9 year old I was very good at the game, maybe even too good. I haven't played it since 2003 sadly.
