This is incredibly tough because I love all types of RPG experiences! I'll create one, but I cannot say if it would be my Perfect RPG, or just one among many.

Combat: Dark Souls
Setting: Fallout
Story: Tomb Raider (I know it's not an RPG, but I absolutely adore the story progression)
Quests: Fallout
Characters: Dark Souls + Fallout + Skyrim + Borderlands

I think it depends on the RPG experience I feel like having that day. I love games like FFVIII, Dark Cloud and Kingdom Hearts. But, I also love Kingdoms of Amalur, Skyrim, Fallout and Dark Souls.

Overall, I think I may pick Dark Souls (on average), for the simple fact that it doesn't force feed you anything (story, where you're going, how to fight enemies, etc). and actually lets you roleplay a vast majority of the game.

I'm a badass, lightning bolt throwing knight that frequently falls to his death in Catacombs.

Definitely agree on the Tomb Raider story ... Tomb Raider was one of the most underrated games this year and the story was easily the best part of the game.

---

Combat: The Elder Scrolls -- Skyrim was good, but every new TES improves
Setting: The Forgotten Realms
Story: Get R.A. Salvatore to outline the main quest storyline and I'm sold.
Quests: Fallout / Skyrim -- Bethesda's style is perfect.
Characters: Depends mostly on the setting and the story, but cameos from the FR would always be great.

Mass Effect 2 plus a more open world like say dragon age origins plus a bit more choice in skill selection like mass effect 3.

OR Deus Ex human revolution with character development and more rpg elements like Mass Effect 2.

I thought mass effect 2 had a great framework for an rpg although it lacked the open world aspect and the talents where a bit more simplified.

Combat: Skyrim. The controls are simple to use and easy to get on with.

Story: Witcher 2. This game is just awesome.

Setting: Oblivion/Witcher/Kingdoms of Amalur hybrid. I have enjoyed these games, and I love the fantasy world settings of these games. Always been a fan, and being able to lose yourself in these environments is therapyetic for me.

Characters: This is a tough one for me. But after playing Mass Effect series, I have to say Bioware nailed it. Dragon Age sadly did nothing for me, and I stopped playing quite early on. So I cannot say anything about how well the characters were designed etc.

I love RPG's, but try as I might, the Japanese variations just don't do it for me with turn based combat. Although beautiful to look at.

Have considered Dark Souls, as a couple of friends have said how amazing the game is. But I have also heard that it is seriously unforgiving at the same time. Would it be worth a purchase?

I'm just throwing elements from games I like to make what I'd consider to be a fun RPG. The games I use for the blend aren't all RPGs.

Combat: Punishingly difficult, stealth is an option

Story: A better L.A. Noire where the main character isn't a total hypocritical douche

Setting: Deus Ex: Human Revolution because that game is seeeee-xy!

Quests: Doesn't matter too much, just have an abundance of side quests and a good set of main story quests. Just doing the main story quests and zero side quests will keep you playing for 25+ hours.

Characters: Red Dead Redemption. Sort of like a you don't know who to trust, and mostly anyone you look at doesn't have a high set of morals. Lots of fucked up people.

This is what I'm hoping Cyberpunk 2077 will be like.

My perfect RPG's for xbox360 would be centered around how the Mass Effect trilogy and Fallout 3 played out. Outside of Xbox, it'd be the early Final Fantasy games and the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona games (if only the Persona games were on XBox also and not just P4 Arena).

This one is pretty easy:

Combat: Dragon Age: Origins
Environment: Skyrim
Story: Dragon Age: Orgins
Quests: Skyrim
Characters: Dragon Age: Orgins

As you can see I love the first Dragon Age. The only minor issue is that the graphics are dated, but thats it.

Combat: Dark Souls - Requires patience, learning, adaptiveness, and realistically depicts how much you can swing a weapon before getting tired depending on your statistics.

Setting: Star Wars KOTOR/Force Unleashed - Creative and varied worlds, you have no question that you are on a different world in a different setting with different creatures and hazards.

Story: Crystalis/Star Wars: KOTOR - Very old NES RPG but the storyline itself for the time was addictive and pushed you further so you could learn more. A combination of elements from it along with the original Knights of the Old Republic games.

Quests: Oblivion/Morrowind - I think about everyone summed up the greatness of quest variation that Bethesda offers.

Characters: Dark Souls Enemies/Star Wars NPCs and Friendlies, Sith villians.

So considering Knights of the Old Republic 3 likely won't be coming i'll create my own. Basically the Star Wars universe and enviornments, but with a lot of the strange and unusual creatures you encounter in Dark Souls. I like a lot of SW characters, but some of the critters from the films are kinda meh, I think it could be improved upon with the help of Bandai.

Instead of the somewhat odd combat system the first two KOTOR games had, it would be a more difficult and strategic style of action RPG, again, like Dark Souls, maybe a tiny bit less difficult to appeal to the masses more and not make children cry.

The storyline would consist of the emergence of a legend that four lightsabers of tremendous power existed at every corner of the universe, the wielder would hold a power of the force much stronger than any Jedi known in the universe (Basically the plot of Crystalis). Each had either tremendous or worthless damage value against certain enemies in different regions, Crystalis was based on elemental but considering how done and overdone that has been, a new idea may have to be put into place.

With a combination of the storyline, the story telling in the Star Wars KOTOR universe, the combat and precision of Dark Souls, and the depth of the Elder Scrolls games with questing, you would have my perfect RPG.

I honestly don't understand the obsession with Fallout 3's environment. It was dull brown, grey and boring. Certain areas were well done but that environment was depressing. Give me lush greenery, vibrant forests, gorgeous oceans and amazing mountain ranges over post apocalyptic anything. I would like to see Dark Souls punishing environment to meet Skyrim's grand size and beauty. Punishing enough to be rewarding and not overly frustrating. High fantasy settings in a lush open world always screamed amazing to me.

Red Dead characters are awesome for reasons that LickableLemons listed. You don't know who to trust. Properly fucked up characters with low moral standing that are well done, suit the high fantasy setting very well in my opinion. Throw in some wacky characters from the styling of Borderlands and then an amazing villain with a well thought out motive and make what he did a grand enough to scale for a lot of people to care and despise him for it, but also have it where there is also enough people who love him for what he did.

The quests need to be varied and interesting, most RPGs seem to have an obsession with annoying fetch quests and other types of games seem to love horribly scripted escort missions. I want the quests not only to be varied but to have an impact based on the importance of the quests to the living game world. I feel like most games haven't nailed that last part yet. Maybe with the One and PS4 it will become more than a pipe dream. Yeah you have games like Fallout 3 where you can kill certain major characters and it will have a lasting affect but you're blocked from killing off others. Or you do something major in a game but can't really reap the benefits of your actions and its just "lol k thnx for doing this major thing for us" then nothing comes of it. Make quests varied and make them matter damn it!

For character customization, I would like to see the ability to move scars, moles, skin deformations etc... where you want them and not in a few preset spots on the body. I want to be able to adjust the length of a scar. Put simply I want the highest level of customization possible in a video game.

I prefer the idea of of skills leveling as you use them. To me that makes the most sense. Choosing what you level up to me defeats the idea a bit. IF you can do that you can use an overpowered skill to gain experience for a lower level skill. I hate that! This is part of the reason I love the elder scrolls games, they level up skills because you USE them. Even my favorite RPG this gen (Dark Souls) is guilty of doing this form of level up and to be honest its my only real gripe with the game.

Other than that I would like the combat system from Dark Souls as the core of the combat system. It almost feels more natural to use RR, RT, LB, LT to be associated with left hand, right hand commands. I would like Skyrim's magic system implemented at the core of the magic system and then add the ability to use what your character knows to create new spells. Like say you have a good mastery of wind type spells and can create tornadoes, but you want to add more devastating power to it you can study up on fire or lightning magic and then in you can go into a spell creation system to combine the two (or 3) spells into a single spell. That way you can just have that 1 combined spell to cast instead of two or 3. Have it naturally create restrictions based on the spells its based off of and the predicted power. Some games have it where you can dual wield spells but this would take it a step further hopefully with an engine that would be able to generate infinite spell possibilities and have the only limit be the players creativity and willingness to bring their mastery of certain kinds of spells up.

I could go on forever about that magic system I am dreaming about hell I could go on a lot longer and spell out a lot of different smaller things I would want put in my dream RPG, but I will stop here.

If you want a really good magic system in an RPG, then play Two Worlds II. Also, when we say we want Fallout's environment, we mean the mithos (how it came to be so depressing/rundown). It just adds to the feeling of despair that Fallout 3 nails.

Two Worlds 2 has been on my radar for a while, I have just been trying to take care of stuff I already have (doing bad at that). I might pick it up here soon since I know its really cheap. Kingdoms of Alamur is also on my radar, as its looks really good and I already have all the DLC.

I guess you could say I am just not a fan of the post apocalyptic setting in general. It did do well in the feeling of despair I will give it that. I did enjoy Fallout 3 a lot I just wish the color palette wasn't so boring.

If you want a deep and innovative combat system, then buy KoA. If you want a magic system that has a dream it/make it feeling to it, then play Two Worlds II. Both lack depth to the actual RPG element (NPC interractions, meaningful/interesting quests, etc.).

I will play both eventually.

Hopefully one day we can have a jaw dropping rpg similar to what I ranted about. If no-one makes something quite like I will just have to make it myself.

I had so much fun goofing around with this magic system. If I'm not mistaken, it also holds the world record for most customizable magic spells in a video game?

The problem is, a lot of those combinations are relatively useless. I was a little disappointed with it. All in all though, it's an excellent idea, and I think Reality Pump was on the right track. Tweak the system a little bit to ensure that all spells (for the most part) have a use.

Also, I love the post-apocalyptic setting in a video game, (or movie, or book for the matter speaking). New Vegas, I'll agree was a little bland setting-wise (too much desert for my tastes). But I adore the idea of a dilapidated city where highways are in pieces, buildings are crumbling, and society is holding on to their lives within crude made encampments worried about mutated creatures and the greed of those who are not.

Skyrim, just add more spells in the game and it's perfect for me

Dark Souls pretty much wins every category for me. Combat? Check! Environment? Check! Story? Yup (although it's not in-your-face like most RPGs). Characters? Check...

Ok, it loses on quests, but that's because it doesn't have any. That's one of the great things about the game though, you're never really given a quest, just a hint as to where to next. So, yeah - I guess ME2 or skyrim/oblivion would probably take that one
