Movie vs Game

is it better to see the movie first before playing or can you get the gist of the movie by playing the game?

All the cutscenes from the game are pulled straight from the movie so doesnt matter either way.

As long as you don't mind having stuff from the movie spoiled. The movie was an absolute blast, it is definitely worth seeing.

You will get the gist of the movie, but you'll miss out on some of the finer details and a few of the cameos from other LEGO licenses.

Also, the end of the game and the end of the movie are a bit different. There's a lot more going on in the movie than they show at the end of the game.

Honestly, one only enhances the other, they do not replace or cancel each other out.

Honestly other then a few lego characters from other series its pretty much the same as the movie except the ending. I liked the ending of the game better then the movie.
