How important are graphics on an arcade game?

I'm just wondering, how important graphics are in an arcade type game (Like Xbox Live Arcade).

They r nice to have, just like for any other game. For me, story and gameplay comes before graphics. I think that arcade games, for the most part, will be lacking in the graphical department for a while longer, with a very few examples.

Pretty much this. As long as I can follow an inviting and interesting story, I don't really care about graphics. They are nice to have though.

Nice, but not essential. As long as I can tell what I'm looking at and there's a good interface and gameplay, I'm happy. I'll never be the "PC master race" type that considers a game garbage when they can't see the grass photosynthesize at 60fps.

Haha, I loved this.

If a game is fun to play, I could care less how it looks.

Look at the most popular arcade games. Minecraft, Terraria, etc. Graphics don't mean shit so long as it is fun to play.

With arcade I don't care at all, as for retail I would vote with the majority that good graphics is a plus, otherwise not really bothered.

Don't care in the least. As long as the gameplay is fun and engaging, the graphics can be 8 bit for all I care. This applies to retail games as well, not just arcade games.

As I've stated before, graphics are nice, but they are not the deciding factor when it comes to arcade. As I mentioned before, I'd rather have a game with bad graphics and good gameplay than a game with good graphics and bad gameplay.

They're nice to have, but if they're not there then I don't mind. CoJ: Gunslinger looks great and all, but if it wasn't there it wouldn't be the end of the world.

In my opinion, insane graphics in an arcade game probably mean the price is going to be jacked up. I hate paying 15-20 dollars for arcade games.

*cough* DotW *cough*

I got CoJ for $3.74. For how good that game is, that's an absolute steal.

I generally appreciate the more "retro" sort of look Arcade games can have on them, it makes me enjoy playing them alot more for that sort of reason, however graphics don't overall mean much to me, as long as the gameplays good i can get hooked.

After the success of Minecraft, these kinds of questions are obsolete.

But I'll say this; gameplay/controls > story > graphics

Minecraft isn't an 'arcade' game per se, just a game that happened to be released on a service with that name. I'm sure if they knew how popular Minecraft would be on the Xbox they would have went to a disc release right away.

Graphics should not be the be and and end all of an Arcade title, and the reason is twofold. 1) A lot of these games are remakes of games that were originally available in actual arcades ~25 years ago. We didn't care about graphics back then, and that didn't stop many people from wasting most of their formative years and most of their quarters on these classic games. Basically we didn't care back then and shouldn't care now, only enough so to make the games playable on 60" TVs. 2) If you want cutting-edge graphics and the latest in bloom and lens flare technology, but a retail game. Modern retail games skew too far in the other direction and favour graphics and looks over substance or story.

Conclusion: Graphics aren't important in Arcade games as long as the essence of the original game is still there and can be enjoyed on a TV the size of most compact cars.

I have zero concern about graphics, I don't care what a game looks like if it's fun and enjoyable. If they still made games for the original NES I would buy them as frequently as I do this gen.

Considering most arcade games are 10-15$ graphics are not high on the priority list, gameplay, story, music, setting and pretty much everything else is more important then graphics.

Though when devs do interesting things with graphics, like in trine 2, or limbo, then it shows and makes the game that more enjoyable.

I enjoy games more when their graphics are retro and pixely. Unless it's a first person shooter, graphics are really no big deal. I guess there are some exceptions, like sports games and racing games should have nice realistic graphics. But if I'm playing worms, or minecraft, or bomberman... they just wouldn't be the same without their cartoony look. So in other words... arcade games should definitely not have good graphics.

if its not 4K and 200 fps then pffft garbage

seriously tho graphics are nice but dont care if they arnt the best.

gameplay and story are by far most important they are like the main dinner of the game and the graphics is the cake that comes after

I'd prefer a game to have good graphics, but if it doesn't then oh well, not gonna stop me from playing if I like the game enough. Though I don't really think about this often as I'm not a big fan of arcade games anyway.
