Introduction

"United. Divided. Defiant. Join the fight!" Welcome to world Defiance, ark hunter. Defiance is a buy-to-play online open-world shooter (third person, mmo). In this world, you'll be killing Hellbugs, Raiders, Mutants, 99ers, and Dark Matter forces as you loot arkfalls, build up your EGO, and search for an alien relic. During your time in Defiance, you'll be working towards killing many enemies (Player vs. Environment, PvE), completing goals and contracts, playing some Player vs. Player (PvP), completing challenges, time trials, side missions, and leveling up in addition to a main storyline.

There isn't much to prepare for. Just jump right in and get started on whatever you want. That is the nice thing about MMOs.

Walkthrough

Story

The story is not that time consuming and is five acts. The completion of the tutorial and each act unlocks an achievement. Just look for the exclamation point in a box on your world map for the next storyline mission. Once you have completed the main storyline, you should have unlocked Holy Shtako!, Skruggin' Ark Core, Wrong Hands, That Hagisi Lied, Everyone Will Die, and Who... Are You?.

PvP

There are competitive PvP and Shadow War PvP achievements to unlock. None of them are overly difficult to earn, some are just more time consuming than others (such as the headshots). During your time in Shadow War PvP, you will want to work on 50 capture points (Chasing Shadows), 50 headshots (Brain Surgeon), and 25 roadkills (Vehicular Manslaughter). In competitive PvP, you will want to win 10 times on each map to unlock Freight Magnate, Stargazer, and Wharfie. Matches in Shadow War and PvP will contribute to 100 human player kills (Upper Echelon). Just focus on one at a time so you aren't trying to do headshots while running people while trying to capture points.

Arkfalls

A big part of this game is the Arkfalls. There are a few achievements related to completing Arkfalls. You'll be jumping into Arkfalls often (hopefully!), so the achievements shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just pay attention and if one is near you, drive on over and have fun! Make sure to complete both minor and major arkfalls for Arkhunting and Arkhunting Party. You will also need 10 major arkfalls for Arkhunting Safari. Arkfalls are also a good time to revive another play for A Friend in Need.

EGO and Weapon Skills

Prepare to spend a good chunk of time making your EGO huge. You'll have to work up to an EGO of 2,500 (EGOtistical, EGOcentric Arkhunter) in addition to unlocking and upgrading EGO powers and perks (Bit of an EGO, Abundance of EGO, Stroking Your EGO, EGO Maniac, Powerful EGO). You will also want to level at least one weapon up to a skill of 20 for an achievement (Shoot to Skill). Find a weapon type you like and stick with it.

Pursuits

If you spend any large amount of time in Defiance or are working towards an EGO rating of 2,500, this will come naturally. However, all the pursuit descriptions are in the game, so find a couple you like and focus on them. You will get an achievement for your first (Individual Pursuit), fifth (Hot Pursuit), tenth (Pursuit of Happiness), fifteenth (High Speed Pursuit), and twentieth pursuit (Pursuit of Excellence).

Co-op Maps

There are achievements for completing each co-op map, so once you unlock them, queue up. The co-op maps are instances completed with four people and are actually a lot of fun. You can do it with randoms or buddy with a few of your friends. They are great for working on weapon skills and grinding loot and XP. The co-op maps are Liberate the Lost (Overdosing), Soleptor Excavation (Broom Closet), Explosions 101 (Save Your Ganchis), Island of Lost Soldiers (Call Me Psycho), The Motherlode (Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!), Commandeer Cronkhite (Not Bad at All), and Scrapworks Salvage (Super Excited).

Reputation

Once you hit 175 EGO, you can start working on daily and weekly contracts. The more you complete, the faster you will reach Trusted with each faction and the faster the associated achievements will unlock. You will get an achievement for completing your first daily contract for Von Bach Industries (Executive Wash Room), Soleptor Enterprises (Private Booth), Top-Noth Toolworks (Office in Back), and Echelon (Secure Channel). Once you complete any four weekly contracts, you will unlock Seven Days a Week. As you complete contracts, your Status with each faction will increase. There are achievements tied to Familiar (Key to Paradise) and Trusted (Widely Regarded) statuses. Widely Regarded will likely be your last achievement if 2,500 EGO rating isn't.

Other

There are achievements for jumping a total of 5 kilometers in a vehicle ( Yeeeeeeehaaaaawww!) and swimming a total of 1 kilometer (Good Cardio). The achievement for crossing the Golden Gate bridge (Monolithic Landmark) will come with story progression, but you can also get it early if you have a friend in San Francisco. Once you find a Legendary/orange weapon, equip it to unlock Wait For It.... Finally, all your killing will eventually add up to 10,000 kills to unlock Calculated Killer. Once all your other achievements have unlocked, Legend of Defiance will unlock and you will be done!

Conclusion

First and foremost, have fun in the game. If you enjoy Arkfalls, do them! If you prefer PvP or co-op maps, play that! As an MMO, the game is flexible enough to fit most playstyles. Many of the achievements will unlock without too much focus or effort. Just pay attention to what you are missing and work on those if you want them faster.

These are tougher than minor arkfalls, but dozens of people typically show up. Again, just make sure you contribute some damage during the event and your achievement will pop at the score screen.

This is unlocked by equipping a Legendary weapon (the weapon name is in orange text). These can be obtained from lockboxes using Scrip and Keycodes or Bits. You can also have a friend trade a Legendary weapon to you as long as you have a high enough EGO rating to equip it.

While it's good to specialize, it's wise to pick up a variety of skills

This is unlocked by fully leveling a weapon skill to 20. For example, use Assault Rifles until your skill in them is 20. Each weapon has an XP bar that is filled by doing damage with the weapon. The XP earned with the weapon adds to the weapon skill. Once that XP bar is filled, you need to swap to a new weapon to continuing leveling the skill. The little white bar under the weapon and ammo part of your HUD displays the current weapon skill level progress. To check the progress of all weapons, open your Start menu and use :rbbut: or :lbbut: to tab over to your Stats menu. As you scroll down, you will see the progress bars and current levels of all weapon types.

To your enemies across the new frontier, your name is "Death"

This is unlocked by killing 10,000 enemies. This will come naturally as you work towards all the other achievements. As long as you landed the killing blow, it will count towards this. You can check your progress on this achievement by looking at the Living to Kill III pursuit.

Arkhunting can be a lonely vocation without trusted friends

This is unlocked by reviving another human player in the game. Major arkfalls are good places to do this as people go down often during the final boss fight of the arkfall. Just look for someone who is "glowing" and laying on the ground. Run over to them and hold down :xbut: to revive them.

Echelon values experienced Shadow Operatives like yourself

This is unlocked by capturing 50 points in Shadow War. Shadow War is PvP within the PvE world and is Capture & Hold. Games initially start with points A, B, and C with more added as more people join (going up to G). Follow the waypoints on the HUD to a capture point and stand near it to capture. To access Shadow War, open the quick menu with :dright: and choose Matchmaking. From there, choose Shadow War and wait for the queue to fill.

Normally Echelon hires drivers for non-combat contracts; For you, they make exceptions

This is unlocked by running over 25 players in Shadow War. Just look for enemies running around and make sure to hold down boost when you run into them. If they don't die, quickly turn around and run them over again.

From Nozza x360a - "A nice little tactic is to try and get a few bullets into them beforehand. Then quickly press :dup:, jump into/on your vehicle and run them over. Hopefully this will eliminate the process of having to turn around if they didn't die the first time."

When Echelon needs a skilled assassin, they know who to call

This is unlocked by killing 50 players with headshots in competitive PvP and Shadow War. I recommend using a sniper rifle to work on this as a headshot with a sniper rifle gives a kill icon with a bullet going through a skull. Other weapons don't do this, making it harder to track this achievement. Find a good camping spot near a highly contested capture point and try to kill enemy players with headshots.

Quantity over quality, but dead is still dead

This is unlocked by killing 100 players in competitive PvP and Shadow War. You will certainly get this when going for the 10 wins on each map and the different kills in Shadow War.

It would be more impressive if you did it in a single jump…

This is unlocked by jumping a total of 5 kilometers in vehicles. This will come naturally just by driving a lot. However, if you want to work on this specifically, find yourself a big hill and keep jumping off of it. A good one is near the first base up in the northwest part of the map. There is a broken bridge near the downed ship that makes for a really good jump.

Sure, it’s fun. But swimming’s not the most effective means of travel…

This is unlocked by swimming a total of 1 kilometer. This is easy to do with just a few minutes of devotion. Find a large body of water and swim laps in it. Be careful of how far away from land you get because if you get too far away from land, it will teleport you back to land. I just stuck close to the shore to prevent this from happening. You can set a waypoint far from you so you can track your distance.

Some gatekeepers are not to be trifled with

This is unlocked by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. This will come naturally by completing Act 4. Otherwise, if you have a friend in San Francisco, teleport to them and then drive across the bridge. You will unlock this before crossing back into Sausalito. Don't try to drive from Sausalito to San Francisco. The Dark Matter Monolith will wreck you.

Maybe worth noting that for 'Shoot to Skill' you can check each weapons overall progress by entering the menu :start: and tabbing across until you reach 'Stats' - I think? Scroll down from there and you can see the current level of the guns you're levelling.

'Vehicular Manslaughter' - A nice little tactic is to try and get a few bullets into them beforehand. Then quickly press :dup:, jump into/on your vehicle and run them over. Hopefully this will eliminate the process of having to turn around if they didn't die the first time.

Thanks. I added in this information and gave you credit for it and the fantastic banner!

Nice job. I see that you integrated the new contract level of 175 into the road map but under the vendor descriptions, you still have it at 250.

Oops, thank you for catching that.

I have fixed a couple things, so this guide is as up-to-date as possible. As soon as there is any news on Freight Yard, I will update accordingly. Trion has not given out any details on an ETA for a fix, sadly.

Not sure if this is known or not.

I just respec'd my perks to get the 50 Abundance of ego achievement for 50 perks unlocked. Saved then went to respec again.

I attempted the EGO Maniac achievement for 25 perks fully upgraded, realized I didnt have enough after I entered them all.

So I hit respec again and added them back in the way I wanted them and it gave me the achievement after I maxed out a couple more, so it seems you can get this one without needing to set the perks, only just hitting respec again once you have entered them in. Maybe try this with abundance of ego as it might do the same.

I already have information on using respecs to get those achievements in the guide. Thanks for the info, though. :)

Hmm, just seems like everyone would've collaborated together rather than have done redundant work..

Everyone is allowed to make a guide. I wanted to make my first one for this game, so I did. And it has been published. There is no reason two guides can't exist. Hell, for FC3: Blood Dragon, two guides were started at the exact same time.

Different writers will often have different takes on how to unlock various achievements. It has always been site policy that ANYONE can write a guide for ANY GAME at ANY TIME. Often times this leads to us being able to publish better information to the main site. The guide team evaluates and often combines the information when multiple guides are submitted for the same game.

I never said other weapons couldn't kill with headshots, I just said that sniper rifles give you the bullet through the skull icon on headshots.

And I'll fix where I said Shadow War. Just a typo from copying and pasting. :)
