Introduction:

Midway Arcade Origins is a compilation disc featuring 31 games made by Midway/Atari spanning from 1980-1992. Many classic games are available on this collection across all genres, such as sports, racing, shooter, and much more. The controls may seem a little wacky for some games, due to the fact that the unique design of certain arcade machines are harder to emulate on a controller.

However this should still be a fun and relatively easy 1000:gsicon:, with only a few achievements that present any real difficulty.

Step #1:

Just go through and play each game in whatever order you would like, making sure to always start the game in score attack mode. Score attack mode gives you just one credit for the game, and is the only way to earn achievements and post to the leaderboard.

Step #2:

After playing through all the games, there will most likely be a few achievements left to get, so go back and try to clean up the rest of them. There really isn't much to say other than just keep playing the ones you are missing the achievement for.

Conclusion:

You should only have trouble with a few achievements in this game, but in the end it is pretty easy to complete and could be done in a single sitting. Obviously your familiarity with the games from this era will give you an advantage, but even somebody who hasn't played any of these titles before will be able to adapt pretty quickly. And once again, make sure you are playing in Score Attack mode, it's the only way to get achievements!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/-GS0SA==.jpg Gold Medalist - 90http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You earned a Gold Medal in an event in 720.

The game starts you off in a small area where you choose between the training level, or experienced level. You can earn the achievement on the training level, so it would be easiest to start there. From there, you will see that there are four different arrows pointing you to the different events, which are ramp park, downhill park, jump park, and slalom park.

Personally, I earned this medal on the downhill park. My trick was to start turning mid-air, so that your board lands flat on the surface of the next hill. If the downhill park seems too hard, I also found the ramp park to be fairly easy. For the ramp park, your skater starts in a half-pipe and you need to go back and forth, using the jump button and rotating your player to earn points.

The hardest part of this achievement is grasping the controls to be able to prevent your rider from bailing.

You took down Freddy Freak in APB.

When you first begin the game you are allowed to pick what day you start on, so pick level 3 because that is where Freddy Freak appears. At the beginning of the level it will show you a picture of his pink hippy van, so you will know what to look for. As you play through the level, pull-over any litterbugs on the way by pressing the siren when the cursor is over top of them. Avoid crashing and hitting things without your siren on, since that will give you demerits, and too many causes a game-over.

Eventually, Freddy will come up on the road and you will have to keep bumping into him until you wipe him off the road. Once you have successfully captured him, you have to keep driving along until you reach the police-station, then stop in your parking spot. If you find yourself running out of time, make sure to pick up donuts as they pop out on the sides of the road, and stop for gas.

Once you have made it to the station with Freddy, the last step is to make him confess. You have to mash on the siren and shoot buttons quickly to make the confess-o-meter raise to the top before the chief makes it to the room. After that, achievement unlocked!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/-6VFbg==.jpgAll-Star - 90http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You scored 6 consecutive points in Arch Rivals.

This game holds a special place in my heart, because I actually own this arcade machine. The achievement here is pretty easy, you basically just have to score 3 baskets in a row without the other team scoring, or you can just sink two 3-pointers if you find that easier. The only controls are to pass and shoot, and you can tell your computer partner what to do by pressing the buttons. It doesn't have to be the player you selected getting the points, so let the computer shoot if he has a good shot.

When you don't have the ball, the pass button punches and the shoot button blocks, while pressing both together causes you to dive and try to steal the ball. So just be aggressive and make sure to get the ball back after each point and this achievement will be yours in no time.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+geulw==.jpg Clean-Up - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You swept up a big bug in Bubbles.

When the game starts, simply move your bubble around picking up the small ants and pieces of dirt, while avoiding the scrubbing brush. Eventually, a witch will fly out of the drain on a broomstick, so run into her to get a broom power-up. When the drain flashes red, it means a big bug is about to come out, so with the broom in hand just push towards the big bug and you should kill him. That's all there is to it.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/++dWBA==.jpg True Champion - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You got first place in 3 consecutive races in Championship Sprint.

I found that for this achievement, the first 2 races were always a piece of cake, then the AI would seem to step it up big-time for the third race. The track you choose to start on affects which tracks you will have for the next race, so you can use this to your advantage. Also, if you can manage to pick up three wrenches before the third race you will be able to put an upgrade on your car. Just keep trying, and eventually you will get three in a row.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+cZfsQ==.jpg They Need a Hero - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You saved 3 astronauts in Defender.

When you are playing Defender you will be fighting against green aliens, which are the green and yellow squares on the radar at the top. The astronauts you need to save are the little men who are shown as gray squares on the radar. My strategy in this game was to use the three smart bombs that you start with to get the three astronauts.

Wait until one of the astronauts is being abducted, which you will hear a sound effect for. Look on the radar and you will see one of the gray squares being lifted away. Fly over to that spot and use your smart-bomb, which will destroy all enemies. The astronaut will start to fall, so catch him in mid-air and then place him safely on the ground. Do this three times in a game, and the achievement is yours.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-jnNRU=.jpg They Need a Hero... Again - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You saved 3 astronauts in Defender II.

Use the exact same strategy here as in the first game, three astronauts to save, and three smart-bombs used to get them. There are more enemies and obstacles in this game, making it a bit harder than the original Defender but you should be able to get this if you got the other achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+CanIg==.jpg Doesn't Need Food Badly - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You reached Level 8 in Gauntlet.

Very simple achievement. You should be able to get this with any character. At the start of the game go down to the bottom and grab the key, but do NOT go in the exit to the left. Walk into the blue wall on the right which will open with the key, then go to the right and up to grab another key and go through another blue wall. From there just walk up and go onto the exit that says "EXIT TO 8". This will take you right to level 8 and grant you 30 gamerscore.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+wGzLA==.jpg Survivor - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You reached Level 7 in Gauntlet II.

A little bit harder than the first Gauntlet, but only because you actually have to complete a full level. From the start, grab the key in the top-right corner and avoid the first exit. Go down through the blue wall, and walk onto the flashing blue spot to remove a wall. Than grab another key, go through the blue wall into the middle and Exit to level 6.

Now here is where you actually have to play the game for a bit. This whole level has invisible walls that you have to navigate through. There are flashing spots on the ground which will remove some of the invisible walls, so just try to quickly navigate through the maze, picking up food when you can to stay alive. Eventually you will find the exit, which will bring you to level 7.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+uFLvw==.jpg Pterrific! - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated a Pterodactyl in Joust.

Oh man, do I ever love this game! Basically the quickest strategy for this one is to defeat all the enemies except for one on the first level. Just keep avoiding the last guy and after a minute or two the Pterodactyl will come out. The only way to kill it is to stab it right in the mouth, which can be a little tricky, but since you are on the first level and have full lives, you can make a few attempts at it. Again, it may be a little tricky, but definitely not impossible.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+c4UEw==.jpg Long Live the Bird - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You reached Wave 5 in Joust 2.

This game plays a lot like the first Joust, with the main difference being the ability to transform into a pegasus. You must start at wave 1 to get this achievement. The first two waves shouldn't give you much trouble, just smash the enemies heads and collect the eggs.

Wave 3 is when it gets a bit harder, since there is a new flying red enemy that must be killed. What I did was try to stay on the bottom platform and lure the enemies down to me. Just be aware that any eggs that fall into lava will come back as enemies the first time, but not the second time.

Wave 4 is the last wave you need to beat, because you only need to reach level 5, not complete it. For this wave I flew to the very top of the level, transformed into the pegasus and just hit everyone as they tried to fly up through the hole in the top. Be aware that you must defeat every single enemy, including the red bats that fly around. But just camp out at the top and you should be alright.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/++8dpg==.jpg High Roller - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated the beginner race within 15 seconds in Marble Madness.

This one is quite easy. Simply move your marble through the first level and make it to the goal with at least 45 seconds left on the clock. You can fall of the edge of the level, just as long as you make it to the end within 15 seconds. Not much strategy involved for this one.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/+g-lNQ==.jpg First Rule of Pit Fighting - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated 3 consecutive opponents in Pit Fighter.

You can choose whichever character you want, but I found the best method was to select Ty and just spam his jump kick attack. Pressing the jump, punch, and kick buttons all at once is how you trigger the move. Just keep your distance from the enemies, and hit them with the jump kick when they get close enough to you. Hitting them into the crowd at the sides will cause people to attack them, causing additional damage.

After the first two fights there will be a grudge match, which does NOT count towards the achievement. You need to win the fight after this one, and then the achievement is unlocked.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/-60OzA==.jpg Monstrous - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated 3 consecutive cities in Rampage.

This one gave me a little bit of trouble at first. I found that selecting George worked best for me, because he starts on the left side, and for whatever reason that just made it easier for me.

The first level should be pretty easy to get through without taking damage. Just destroy the buildings quickly while eating the army men and avoiding their attacks. My strategy for destroying buildings quickly was to climb up the side, and then just move down while punching, taking out the whole side of the building.

Day two and three are when things start to get challenging, but the main key is to avoid getting hit by the dynamite and bullets. Destroy the buildings and kill the people that are causing you problems, doing so in a quick and smart manner. After a couple tries, you will know what to expect. You can also smash windows for items that can recover health if needed.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/-k32Xw==.jpg Target Practice - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated the first 3 ships in the first level in one battle in Rampart.

Select the Recruit beginner level at the start of the game. From here, choose which area you want to build your castle. I chose the second one from the left, closest to the shore because I figured it would be easiest to shoot the cannon from there, since it has the least amount of distance to hit the ships.

Set up your three cannons, then move the cursor over to the ships and proceed to shower the enemies with cannonballs. Defeat the three ships and the achievement is complete.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/-Gz-6g==.jpg Family Man - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You rescued 7 family members without losing a life in Robotron: 2084.

This game may seem very overwhelming when you first start it up, since the screen is just littered with objects. Basically you want to kill all the red robots and objects, while saving the family members. Make sure to save all the family members before killing the last enemy in a level, since the game moves on once the last enemy is defeated.

In the first level there are two family members to save, the woman in pink, and the man in blue. Save them, and defeat the enemies to move onto wave 2.

The second wave has three humans which can be saved, the woman in pink, the man in blue, and the boy in red. Also there is a new enemy which cannot be killed, the one with the square green body. Make sure to save the family before the green guy touches them, because otherwise they will be killed.

On wave 3 there should be about five humans to rescue, and by this point you only need two more. So just grab two more humans without dying and you will be done. Just remember that you have to save all 7 family members in a single life!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-gB0D0=.jpg Tap That Glass - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You cleared 25 customers without dropping a glass in Root Beer Tapper.

This one is pretty easy. You can either just play through the game, beating the levels without failing, or you can try and get all 25 done on the first level. Just keep serving the customers, but always leave one left and you can stay on the first level until you get 25 in a row. And don't let any glasses fall, as well as not letting a customer get to the end of the bar. Also, don't send a glass down the bar to nobody.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-6EL8o=.jpg Savior - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated Satan in Satan's Hollow.

Well I must say, Satan really isn't much a of a threat in this game. You move your ship left and right, shooting at enemies in the air. When you kill an enemy a piece of a bridge appears on the left side and you must move over to pick it up, then move to the right to put it down. Keep shooting enemies to get more pieces and drag them over until the bridge is complete. It takes 6 pieces to build the first bridge. And remember you have a shield that you can use that recharges over time.

Once you build the bridge it will take you to a different screen where you fight Satan. Just shoot him to defeat him and you are done!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-9k11k=.jpg You Hunger - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated Sinistar in Sinistar.

This is one of the harder achievements for me, simply because I had very little prior experience with this game. But basically the way to defeat Sinistar is to first start shooting at the asteroids until they shoot out flashing square pixels. These are Sinibombs, which you need to defeat Sinistar. Collect at least 13 of them, which are shown as circles above your score. Don't shoot the asteroids too rapidly, or else they will explode.

The little red guys cannot kill you, but they can push you around and steal the Sinibombs that come out of asteroids, but killing them makes them drop it. The little UFO's can kill you however, so it is best to dispose of them.

Eventually, Sinistar will be formed and you will hear him speak. This is when he comes to get you, and now is the time to put those Sinibombs to use. Just unload on him, and eventually he will be destroyed. I find that if you fly in a straight path, he will follow right behind and you can just drop bombs back at a steady pace while shooting straight in front of your ship.

The hardest part of this achievement was getting used to the controls, because they are very touchy and make navigating difficult. Also don't forget about the radar at the top if you need it.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-1F3uw=.jpg Reality Show-Off - 90http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated the first level in Smash TV.

This is probably the hardest achievement in the game, at least it was for me. Basically, just never stop shooting the enemies, grab every power-up that you can along with the prizes and money. You get more than one life, but no continues, so there is room for a bit of error. If you do die, remember that you get a shield at the beginning of each life which will kill enemies if you walk into them.

Once you reach the boss, try to stay in one of the top corners and shoot him from there, taking apart his body. Pick up any power-ups that you can, as they will make the fight a lot easier.

This may take a lot of tries, but it can be done. Also, there is supposedly a glitch where if you run out of lives and your score is above 500,000 you can keep mashing the A button and the game may let you continue.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-ylJn8=.jpg Score Hunter - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You broke 10,000 points in Spy Hunter.

This one is very simple. You can just hold the gas down and keep driving and watch the points add up on the top left. You can crash unlimited times until the timer at the top runs out. Just focus on staying on the road and driving along and you should get this achievement with ease.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-kHzYY=.jpg Saint - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You played the game for 15 consecutive minutes in Spy Hunter II.

Literally, this is the easiest achievement in the game. Hit start, and then just do nothing... Seriously you can sit there until you get a game over, and then just leave the game on, and once 15 minutes passes by you will get the achievement. Piece of cake!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-rGPKA=.jpg X-Treme Off-Road - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You got first place in 3 consecutive races in Super Off Road.

I found this one to be easier than Championship sprint. Once again, the first two races shouldn't give you much trouble, just try to collect cash and save your nitro boost for when you really need it. You should be able to buy a few upgrades before the third race, and spend any remaining cash on Nitro. Whenever you have a straight-away, that is the best time to use the nitro boost. Just win 3 in a row and you are good to go.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-smxDM=.jpg Superior Sprint - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You got first place in 3 consecutive races in Super Sprint.

This is basically the exact same as Championship Sprint, just with a few different tracks, so follow the same strategy. Try to get three wrenches before the third race, because the first two will always be super-easy. The track you select affects the order of the next ones, so pick whatever works best for you.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-nhKK4=.jpg Ride the Wave - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You completed Colorado without sinking in Toobin'.

I started off by changing the controls to the triggers and bumpers, as that made the game much easier for me to control. From there you are basically just trying to get through the level while avoiding the obstacles such as sticks in the water, fisherman, crocodiles, etc.

Just hang back and take it slow and steady. The level layout is always the same, so you will eventually memorize the obstacles that get in your way if you are having trouble. When the river branches always try and stick to the left side, because different paths can lead to different levels which may screw up the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-rOdwI=.jpg Total Warpage - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You used a shortcut in Total Carnage.

This one is so much easier than the achievement for Smash TV. Just start the game, moving upwards, destroying enemies until you see the purple and blue spiral that says shortcut. Walk into it and you are done.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-jvfrc=.jpg Great Coaching - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You scored at least 12 consecutive points in Tournament Cyberball 2072.

So what this really means is score two touchdowns without your opponent scoring in between. It doesn't matter if you fail on the conversions, because each touchdown is worth 6 points. My strategy was to do passing plays until I was close enough to just do a running play and walk right into the end-zone with the quarterback.

On defense I would do a safety blitz every time, and as long as the opponent doesn't score a touchdown you will be in a good position. Just get another touchdown and the achievement should pop. Also, you can carry the stats over to the next game, so if you are the last one to score a touchdown in one game, and then you score first in the second game, that will count. So it doesn't have to be two in a row in the same game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-kPhiQ=.jpg On Base - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You defeated the first base in Vindicators Part II.

This is another fairly easy one. Just go through the first level without even worrying about the enemies, just drive right past them. Pick up the fuel, since that is also your health, and either the blue or purple key to exit. Do the same on the second level, just drive through, pick up the key and fuel and leave through the exit. Same strategy for the third level just keep going until you see the base on the left, then you must shoot the door and drive in. Once you are inside just drive out of one of the doors and you will be done.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-ytbd0=.jpg Worrior - 85http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You had at least 10,000 points and 3x your opponent's score at the same time in Wizard of Wor.

For this game, you don't really need to worry about your opponent, but shoot him if you get the chance. He should die long before you, so just worry about killing the rest of the enemies. I find a good strategy is to sit in a corner and lure the enemies to you and just spam the shoot button. Just keep killing and you will reach 10,000 which should definitely be more than 3x your opponent's score. Pretty easy, considering the high amount of gamerscore they gave to this achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-1NlU4=.jpg Not Afraid - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You survived the first level in Xenophobe.

The best way to get this is to just walk around shooting enemies and trying your best to avoid taking damage. The level will be complete after a few minutes, once the self-destruct timer goes off, so just focus on staying alive for as long as possible and forget about exploring and other things. You can stay in one room the whole time and just kill enemies until time runs out.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2486/5-9snPs=.jpg Third-Person Shooter - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

You survived 3 levels without dying in Xybots.

Surviving for three levels in this game is not too bad at all. Move as quickly as possible, since your energy constantly drains, and shoot any enemies in your way. The red and white circle takes you to the next level. Between levels you can spend money, so you might as well buy the slow energy loss for $2. Be quick, but not careless, since you don't need to kill every enemy or explore the whole level, just go to the exit as soon as you see it.

Good guide man. Was going to attempt one myself, but I see you've done well. (plus I should have been a little quicker on the draw, haha).

And, for a bit of a tip for those who don't know, pressing :back: on some - if not all games - will give you extra credit/lives. I used it on Gauntlet (can't remember if it was 1 or 2) and it jumped my health to 2000. Made running through that game a breeze.

Well I know that the back button works for extra health in free play mode, whenever I tried it in score attack mode it wouldn't do anything for me.

Yeah, I was going back, trying to figure out if/how it worked. But, for some reason, it never seemed to work. I know for a fact that I used it in one of the Gauntlet games, attempted a few times, hit :back:, my life went up to 2000 health, and pushed my way through to get to the exit.

Yeahh I think this game just has a couple glitches like that, which only work some of the time. Like the Smash TV continue glitch, as well as one that worked for me in Championship Sprint. I would get a game over and mash the A button and some times it would give me an extra credit and let me continue on to the next race.

This is defiantly a 6/10 for difficulty. AT LEAST! unless you grew up playing most of the titles or are abnormal good at retro gaming most achievements will take allot of adjusting to get.

Smash TV is a bitch, it really depends on what pick ups the game hands you. I just played a game that gave me 3 extra lives in the first room but unfortuantly i made stupid mistakes and still had to try again.
