Happens in chamber 19. When you finish you should be on a platform and moving into the furnace. Clear them out and to get to the next part (you must be in the highest hole in the wall so take out that turret last) put a portal on the ledge sticking diagonally outward across from you. Then jump out and place a portal below you and jump in. You should catapult out. Shoot another portal where you land and you should fly out again. Then you should see another diagonal ledge. Put a portal on it and another portal below where you land. You should get to the ledge where you need to go AND get the achievement. There are a total of six of them. You unlock them when you finish the game for a first time. Youtube has plenty of videos showing how to complete them http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/308/UP-OFLE=.jpgBasic Science 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg Earn bronze medals on all Portal challenges - See "Aperture Science" http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/308/UP3vHQQ=.jpgRocket Science 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg Earn silver medals on all Portal challenges -See "Aperture Science" http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/308/UPwP5Zc=.jpgAperture Science 40 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg Earn gold medals on all Portal challenges. -When you finish the game you unlock the advanced maps and the challenge maps. These take place on the same maps as the advanced. They are the same as the old maps, but you are challenged with how to complete them. You can choose the challenges "Least Portals" , "Least Time" or "Least Steps". When you finish the map, depending on how many portals, steps and seconds you use or take, you are given a Gold, Silver, Bronze, or no medals. When you are selecting the map and challenge type you wan to do, it gives you a set goal of steps, seconds, and portals. To get bronze, you must get the same amount or less than the amount given. For Gold and Silver, it takes off from the number at the end of the course. A good may to minimize steps is to shoot a portal on the ground of where you need to go. Then shoot a portal under you. You should be in a loop. When you come out the side that you want to be on, shoot the portal of the color that you came through (EX, shoot a blue under you, shoot an ornage when you come out) onto another surface. You should be where you need to be and not have taken any steps. Youtube has many videos of showing how to do the steps and portals, but for time, you are going to have to memorize the course and do it as quick as possible. Good luck! Here is a site that helps with both the Advanced and Challenge levels: http://www.portalwalkthroughs.com/ http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/308/-K7V9w==.jpgCamera Shy5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg Detach security cameras from the walls. -There are always cameras...watching. Chamber 3 04) By the puzzle sign. 05) By the orange portal. 06) By the exit. Chamber 4 07) By the button. 08) By the exit. Chamber 5 09) Above puzzle sign. 10) By the door. 11) By the exit. Mr. Writer
Great guide, and now we have the full set of achievement guides.
arachnophilia
there seems to be a glitch with the "cake" achievements on the advanced maps. sometimes, if you turn off your xbox, and come back to play later, it will have lost your progress. if you get 2/2 on the first achievement, the ones after it will still say you've done 2. but when you do the next map, they'll drop down to 1/4 and 1/6. the best way to avoid this is to make permanent (new) saves right before the exit on each advanced map you complete. that way if you can't do it all at one time, you can always reload those saves. does anyone know if the "science" achievements are similarly glitched? haven't tried those yet and there ain't enough save slots for that one. i'd hate to have to go get golds all at the same time... JiveT
I haven't had a problem with that glitch yet. I have two of the cake achievements. I never bothered to look at the in game guide though so maybe it is something that sorts itself out.
Mr. Writer
Could we possibly get a sticky on this since the other guides do? If not, ok, if so, thanks Pm a mod, I did

I had that same glitch happen to me on the advanced maps. You are correct. Saving in one slot all the time pretty much fixes it. I don't think the Science achievements are the same way. JiveT
Maybe if you teach us all the easy way to get golds on every challenge they will sticky. Has anyone done that with the 360 version? Seems like most of the Youtube videos are PC runs.

Has anyone done that with the 360 version? Seems like most of the Youtube videos are PC runs. Well first of all, I haven't done every map challenge and gotten gold. I have gotten most of them, but not all. Second, this is not a gold medal walkthrough. It is a guide for the achievements in the game. I am not going to center my guide around a set of achievements because people are too lazy to look them up or try themselves. When I finish the golds I might try a guide but with school and sports going on for me, don't hold your breath
jaycarrell
the golds are too hard! Ill admit though, some were really hard, they took practice Did you have to change the sensitivity of the controller? I keep missing the timed runs by a second over and over it's very frustrating. To the guy who made this thread I was just joking about the gold medals thing. It would be impossible to tell anyone how to do it anyway and all the Youtube videos are people doing it on PC even though they are very helpful. Da_Big_D__
Has anyone done that with the 360 version? Seems like most of the Youtube videos are PC runs. There are a handful of people who have, myself among them. While yes, nearly all the videos are done on the PC, most contain some strategy that can be modified slightly and carried over to the Xbox. In particular, the two hardest in my opinion are Chamber 16 Least Time and Chamber 17 Least Steps, both of which are (or at least seem to be) far easier on the PC. The following two videos are the ones whose strategies I used (for the most part) in order to obtain Golds. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFNocl-PrAI]YouTube - Portal - Least Time Challenge Stage 16 // Gold Award[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKn11ZwNAp4&feature=related]YouTube - Portal - Chamber 17 - 124 Steps (No Glitches)[/ame] Edit: Forgot to mention, you must do nearly all challenges more than once to get the Gold, simply because few if any of them are easy enough to get in one go (whether you have a video or not). Practice really does make perfect. For example, with Chamber 16 Least Time (the last Gold I got), I ran that circuit no less than 50 times, getting 0:53 (one second over gold) three times before I finally slipped into the zone and nailed the challenge at exactly 0:52. And 17 Least Steps takes forever just because of the nature of the beast. Be patient, I took me half an hour to get all three platforms up. JiveT
Thanks for the links and encouragement Big D. Hey arachno it's not really grinding as much as it is mastering some skills. It's a great feeling to get the gold. I have 6 so far. :uzi:Gold Challenges! Timing and steps are tough. You definitely want to change the sensitivity of your sticks from default but not too much. Just tweak them up a little because you have to be able to spin around fast for the timed runs. I want 100% on this game so bad I can taste it. And these gold challenges are the only major roadblock. Oh yeah if you haven't played Portal yet then right from the start tweak both the H and V settings on your sticks in the menu up about 7 or 8 spots so you can get used to it while playing through the campaign. I didn't do it until I started going after golds and it took me awhile to adjust.
laundryman
I have 7 gold done and 8 bronze. I haven't really played this game much recently but if I find out sure-fire stratageis onhow to do them I will post

Though it isn't easy, it's not boring. I got all of my Golds in less than a week using Youtube videos. Most of them only take two or three trials to nail (Chamber 18 Least Time, for example, took me three for a Gold).

glasstiger50
Thank you for making this guide. I would try and add in a few tips but it looks like you've got everything covered. Nice job.
JiveT
Wow Level 16 timed seems impossible so far. I am coming nowhere close to the gold time and haven't even gotten silver yet. It's like you can't make a single wasted motion.
Da_Big_D__
Wow Level 16 timed seems impossible so far. I wasn't kidding. =P I'm sure it can be done other ways, but practicing the video I linked was the only way I ever was able to accomplish it. It should be noted that instead of dropping the cube and using Portals to knock over the turret as shown at 0:41-0:43, I tossed the cube at the second turret in the room prior to the one with the button, then used Portals to drop the closest of the turrets on the other turret visible from the doorway (the exit Portal doesn't need to be high up; in fact, it should only be no more than a foot off the ground on the wall next the the farther of the two turrets). To nail the third, you need only detach the camera from the wall behind it; said camera falls on the turret, knocking it over, by default. That's a lot of words, but that process shouldn't take more than five to seven seconds. <_< Again, use that video I linked for the rest of the run. I've considered making videos of Gold runs on the Xbox; however, I'm unsure whether or not I have the necessary equipment, and if not, how much it would cost. JiveT
I guess that video you posted is the only chance there is of doing it in the 360 version. I tried using some other methods shown on Youtube but apparently the PC version is more forgiving when it comes to the turrets knocking you around. I think I am getting there. I notice with these Portal maps if I load and reload too much it starts locking up my system. So I had to stop trying for awhile. I had the same problem on the first challenge map and it came and went so hopefully that's the case here.

Right now at 41 seconds I am basically right in front of the door of the room with 3 turrets with a companion cube in hand. I have tried the method you describe but I seem to be going smoother with the method shown in the video due to the nature of where I saved. It's driving me insane. One time I had it but I didn't jump for some reason and I missed it by what must have been a millisecond. It's amazing how much variation you can have. The thing that's really screwing me up is shooting that last portal from the red button. You know you are in trouble when you start thinking things like "man if only you could shoot a portal under that turret facing you". Now I need to try and sleep without being tormented by this stupid challenge.
Blackjaw x
Who has managed to do Chamber 17 (chapter 9) least steps on the 360? I can get to 108 steps right before the stairs leading up to the button near the end, but the people in the videos are at about 85 steps here. What kind of run/jump technique did you use if you finished it? I tried doing the recommended jump, crouch, jump while running thing but it was no better than just running and jumping.
