Let down greatly by House

THIS THREAD CONTAINS SPOILERS! IF YOU DID NOT WATCH THE EPISODE "HELP ME!" THAT INVOLVED A YOUNG WOMAN TRAPPED UNDER A BUILDING, DO NOT READ ON AS I WILL WIND UP GIVING THE ENDING AWAY TO FUEL MY RANT OF EXTREME DISBELIEF.

THANK YOU,

JASON APOCH WEISS

Ok, so I just finished watching the House episode "Help Me", which I assume was the season finale. If not, then damn, they better not pull some kind of stunt like Family Guy did with their season finale of airing already available material as something "new". I felt the episode was great and was very moved through much of the episode. Considering how rampant my life is and, with the M.S., how exhausted I am on a daily basis, it really made me realize what kind of damage I could do, even just behind the wheel of a car, if I DO fall asleep behind a machine for a split second.

But then, the ending to the episode. The focus on the girl and getting her untrapped safely, the amputation of the leg, the statement she makes about being a good person and that good things are supposed to happen and that she doesn't know why this would happen to her prior to it, and then the opening of the ambulance doors to find the husband holding her hand as everyone sits, knowing they couldn't save her, all from something completely different all together...It made me realize why I could never be a doctor.

If I were a doctor, like I planned to be when I started highschool, I'd never make it. I have anger issues, I'll admit this, and if things get too frustrating for me, I take my anger out on innanimate objects, whatever the closest non-living thing is. Unfortunately, too many times this has been my CDs, or 360 controller. Last night something happened to me and my depression kicked in. I took my antidepressants, which stupid me, fucking read wrong (newly prescribed, hadn't started them yet) and took 3. here it's 1 a day, not 3 3 timees a day. Whoopie, go me for being stupid during depression. I wound up passing out on the futon with the bottle wrapped in my hand so I was greatly touched when I saw House rip the mirror of the wall and, low and behold, the Vicodin bottles.

It was all set up so perfectly for the biggest moment of drama, the epic climax to the episode, to the season, that viewers will be talking about for months to co...

...JUST KIDDING! No, I did expect a Soprano's ending, but it didn't come. Instead, Cutti (however you spell her name) walks in and reveals the relationship with Lucas is over because she can't get past House. They kiss.

The end...

The END...

The FUCKING END!

THE FUCKING END OF THE EPISODE! ARE YOU GOD DAMNED KIDDING ME?! House has a mental fucking breakdown after watching a patient he connected with, that he had his life views changed for, die because of something so fucking stupid in comparison to a giant building crashing down on her: a fatty embalism, and all he does is sit there and shake the pills and think about it?! WHO DROPPED THE GOD DAMNED BALL ON THIS ONE!

I couldn't have composed the episode better myself and I give epic kudos for the writers as, coming from a writer (not counting my current site, before it I wrote fiction and horror) it was a very emotional and realistic episode. But they REALLY fucked the ending up! That's IT?! I understand that they probably wanted to draw away from the drug addiction, but that's what made House so good, the chance of returning to the drug addiction. It left you wondering at times. And to find they were there the whole time shows he didn't beat it. Addiction is a hard thing to beat so by having him sit there, pills in hand and not do it because Cutty walked in...I dunno. I can see it happening but this is fiction for god's sake, AND it may be a breath of air for fans, but it won't do any good for the story!

CUT TO:

HOUSE standing in front of the mirror, sweating, shaking, staring at the sink. He looks up and

CUT TO:

Visions of HANNAH from his perspective, under the building, smiling, screaming during the amputation, when her husband came, breathing heavily...

DISSOLVE TO:

HOUSE staring at the mirror, angry, breathing harder.

CUT TO:

HANNAH dead in the ambulance, staring at HOUSE.

CUT TO:

HOUSE screaming with rage, pulling the mirror from the wall and throwing it against the tub. It shatters into a million pieces. He stares at the pill bottles that sit in the hole in the wall.

CLOSE UP:

HOUSE's face, dripping with sweat. He lets out a sigh of relief, looking as if he were Mr. Hyde to his Dr. Jeckyl, staying for a few seconds before,

CUT TO:

HOUSE grabs one of the pill bottles, the other goes flying. He falls to the ground, sitting against the bath tub as he tears the top of the bottle open and pours them into his hand. His eyes light up, but throws all but two aside. He holds them up, staring at them between his fingers, rocks back and forth for a second, in pain, shaking his head a few times as if trying to resist, but shoves them in his mouth and swallows.

HOUSE looks down at the scattered pills and his face goes white as a ghost, as it hits him what he did. He hurries to the toilet and forces himself to vomit the pills out of his system. After a few heaves, he clings to the bowl, breathing hard, as we see CUTTI walk into the bathroom door way.

NOW is when I'd expect House and her to talk, reveal that about Lucas, and then reveal a life changing plot for the next season. They kiss and make up, hold hands with empahsis on the hands from the camera, then...

FADE TO BLACK

ROLL CREDITS

Anyone else out there think the ending of this fantastic episode was completely ruined by a lack of attention to the build up of suspense for a dramatic climax?

Personally I think they did good. They had everyone expecting that he would go back to the vicodin. Noone would have anticipated Cuddy coming in and saying what she did. I think they want to move away from the drug addiction in the long run. That was pretty much the same story line for 5 whole seasons, whilst this season it's been about the progress he is making to stay off of it...but still there always being a chance of relapse.

Like you say they could have ended it so many other ways, but I think for one season at least they wanted to give it a slightly upbeat ending.

I mean season 1 ended with Stacey coming back which made him more depressed, season 2 he got shot in the last episode, he loses the whole team at the end of 3, Amber dies from pretty much his fault in 4 and the end of 5 he goes into rehab. It was about time he had a happy ending really, although I wouldn't expect it to last for long when season 7 gets going...

But see, that's just it. Everyone EXPECTED him to take the pills. But would they expect him to vomit them out of his body once he did take them? I think that shows more character growth then him sitting there contemplating it. I mean, what I saw was a man who just watched practically everything he believed in be countered by something no one could have seen coming. He watched this person die staring him in the face and doing everything he could to keep her safe and put his agenda aside, which is clearly not an easy thing for the guy. I understand they want to get away from it but at the same time, it wound up NOT being his choice.

Think about the ending. Cuddy (thanks for the spelling) walks in while he's still debating. What would have happened had she NOT? Now instead of having a drug as a crutch, we're back to square one with Cuddy as a crutch for him with the drugs in the background. If he were to have taken them, then made a conscious decision to get them out of his system and toss them aside, then they could have completely eliminated the drug addiction issue for good. But he DIDN'T choose. He contemplated until she intervened.

That's not character growth or a realization about one's self. That's just keeping him the same way. If you think about it, yes, it's a happy ending, but when you sit and think, it's exactly the kind of ending you would imagine if you have no imagination. It was a cop out in my opinion. A punch out ending.

I think they were trying to symbolise that if he is alone and miserable he would go back to the vicodin, but he does actually want to be with Cuddy. Also it shows that he doesn't want to be alone, it's his self-sabotage nature and a front he puts up to not let anyone in. As for no character growth I think they are also trying to convey that when he was on vicodin there wasn't really a difference in his personality apart from the addiction, what with the big topic of "If he comes of the pain meds will he lose his gift?"

I'm pretty sure they aren't finished with the issue anyway. It seems like they want to set up the next series to be based around their new relationship (and how house deals with any problems they have), and I think another major plotline will be around 13 and her leave of absence request (Probably something to do wiith her Huntington's disease).

I just don't see how they could have made him take the drugs this quickly, I think that could have been seen as an even bigger cop out as they would be back to square one in that aspect aswell, with only a season of him being clean. To make him go back so soon with no other major plotline developments would have pretty much written off any character progression throughout this season and taken things back to how it used to be.

Either way, I can't wait for the next season of this as it's one of my favourite shows!

I actually predicted him getting together with cuddy before him going back to pills, so the little bit of is he going to take the or not? part was a bit more of a surprise to me (not by much)...I say that because they spent and unordinary amount of time away from cuddy this season while still making it all about her and lucas somehow

Your right though that it could have been a bit more climactic

I heard a lot of people disagree, but overall I thought this season was a good one, a little bit of a change of pace with house kind-sorta trying to be nice (in his own way)

and that episode with wilson and his porn...lol ..be not afraid

as of right now with Lost over, Im gonna say House is my favorite show

I thought it was great. After 4 seasons of the same old pill-popping sarcastic House who never shows his feelings this season has been a breath of freah air.

In the season premiere there was huge character growth, and it has continued throughout the entire 22 episodes. The show needed a change, I mean I love it, but every episode was getting to be the same:

Opens with someone getting a symptom (usually the person you didn't expect. i.e. someone complains of being ill/looks ill and it's the 22 year old next to them who couldn't look healthier that is actually ill.)

Spend 30 minutes mis-diagnosing the patient, with House taking vicodin every 5 mins.

Throw in a random back story, that 5 minutes from the end provides a conversation oppotunity where House stops mid sentence because he's figured out what's wrong.

Saves the patient.

The end.

I know that basic premise still probably won't change (although more episodes like the season 6 finale would be nice) but to focus on something other than his addiction to drugs/struggle to not take them will be good. All that character development this season would have been a waste if he had taken the drugs at the end. It wasn't Hannah's death that was getting to him, that whole situation represented his relationship (well, lack of) with Cuddy. As far as he knew, his chance at a relationship with her was dead. He got off the drugs because of her, he wanted to change. If she was getting married to Lucas, he had no reason to stay off the drugs. The only thing that was going to stop him was Cuddy walking into that bathroom, and she did. He's got what he wants now, he doesn't need the drugs. If it will last or not is a different quiestion.

Anyway, I'm bored of dramatic/sad and/or cliffhanger season finales on TV shows, nice to have a happy one for a change.

I certainly liked that episode of house. It resolved some unanswered questions and really still keeps you wondering... With the overall theme of unfaithfullness the past season, has cuddy really broken up with her partner? Did house really not take vicodin? We don't know...

Sounds like you just didn't understand the concept of it.

House always has great season finales and this was no different. Only thing I'm disappointed with is that it looks like Olivia Wilde is leaving, or at least taking a break from the show.
