Introduction:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD is a port of the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. It's a sequel to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for the 360, and combines classic Metroidvania-style exploration with Lords of Shadow's combat mechanics for a familiar Castlevania experience. You'll play as three different Belmonts: Simon, Trevor, and Gabriel (albeit briefly), and as Alucard. The storyline fills in some important details that get picked up in Lords of Shadow 2, so it's great that Konami released this port for those without a 3DS.

100% Playthrough on Normal:

For your first playthrough, you'll want to enjoy the story while getting familiar with the game. Focus on exploration, getting all collectibles and gathering as much XP, and killing as many enemies as possible.

This will net you all of the story-achievements, as well as the following 100% achievements: Simon's Quest, Alucard's Redemption, and Trevor's Destiny. Make sure you get the missable achievements in Act II for completing the puzzles without hints, Puppeteer and Light guide. If you reach the max level, you'll also get Combat master. If you don't get any of the three missable achievements in Alucard's chapter, you'll need to obtain them on another playthrough.

This should take you about 10 hours to complete, and unlock the Hardcore difficulty.

Speed Run on Hardcore:

Now that you know the game, start your second playthrough on the same save file. Choose New Game and select Hardcore. All of your character upgrades that aren't story-based will carry over, as well as your kill count.

Once you start the game, do not turn the map navigation aids back on, and do not change the difficulty.

Your goal is to complete the game in less than three and a half hours. Focus on getting through the three acts in about an hour each. This will give you 30 minutes wiggle room.

Completing the game on Hardcore under the target time will earn you Quick as lightning, I'm a Belmont!, and I'm Dracula!. You should also earn Combat master if you didn't in your first playthrough, and Beast Hunter for killing 1000 enemies. (If you haven't killed 1000 enemies yet, load up the act of your choice in Chapter Replay and go to town.)

Boss Rush Mode:

Boss Rush mode is unlocked upon completion of the game. Whatever character upgrades you've got carry over into this mode, so tackle it when you've reached 100% completion.

You'll have to fight all ten bosses from the story without any health refills and no continues. Boss Rush on Hardcore is very difficult, so you'll need to be able to beat each one with as little health lost as possible.

Completing this will earn you the four Boss Rush achievements: The fearsome barbarian, The fearless vampire, The best warrior in the Order, and The great pirate king.

Conclusion:

Mirror of Fate is a fun, if somewhat frustrating (on higher difficulties) game. Overall, the achievements shouldn't pose too much of a problem for seasoned Castlevania players.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/10.jpg Simon's Quest - 20:gsicon:

Complete Simon (100%)

This achievement requires you to find all scrolls, bestiary cards, and chests as Simon in Act I, and then complete the act. It is not recommended to backtrack as Simon until you have obtained the Combat Cross (which is after you defeat the Necromancer), as it enables you to collect items that are out of reach when you first find them.

The map in your Travel Book will list how many items you have collected, and how many there are total in each section. When playing on Easy or Normal difficulty, your map will display a ? when you come across an item in your current location. Be sure to fully explore each section of the map, to make sure you uncover it all. Once you have all of the items in a section, the circular icon for that section will glow yellow on the map screen.

Deviant Art user L-sama-no-miko created maps showing the collectibles for each act. You can see them here: http://l-sama-no-miko.deviantart.com/gallery/42765802

The act ends once you defeat the Succubus, so do not exit the top of the Main Tower Outside map without collecting everything. If you do miss something, you can use the Chapter Select to replay the area once you finish the act, or you can just get it on a second playthrough.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/11.jpg Alucard's Redemption - 20:gsicon:

Complete Alucard (100%)

THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS MISSABLE

This achievement requires you to find all scrolls, bestiary cards, and chests as Alucard in Act II, and then complete the act. It is not recommended to backtrack as Alucard until you have obtained the double jump (after you defeat the Daemon Lord Resurrected), as it enables you to collect items that are out of reach when you first find them.

The first two sections of Alucard's act cannot be revisited once you leave them, so be sure to collect the three scrolls found there before proceeding into the Towers Link map section. The first scroll is in the Mirror of Fate room, to the right side of where you start. The other two are in the Belfry; one is found to the far left of the entrance, and the other is found along the path you climb to get out of there. If you do not get them, you will have to get them on a new playthrough.

The act ends once you defeat Dracula, so do not enter his room from the Throne Entrance map without collecting everything. If you do miss anything (apart from the three in the first two map sections), you can utilize the Chapter Select to replay the area, or you can just get it on a second playthrough.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/12.jpg Trevor's Destiny - 20:gsicon:

Complete Trevor (100%)

This achievement requires you to find all scrolls, bestiary cards, and chests as Trevor in Act III, and then complete the act. It is not recommended to backtrack as Trevor until you have obtained the speed boots (at the top of the Clock Tower) and completed the event with the falling bell in the Belfry; the boots enable you to collect items that are out of reach when you first find them.

The map in your Travel Book will list how many items you have collected, and how many there are total in each section. When playing on Easy or Normal difficulty, your map will display a ? when you come across an item in your current location. Be sure to fully explore each section of the map, to make sure you uncover it all. Once you have all of the items in a section, the circular icon for that section will glow yellow on the map screen.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/13.jpg Combat master - 15:gsicon:

Obtain all the skills (reach the MAX level)

As you kill enemies and find scrolls, you'll gain purple experience orbs. These fill up your XP meter, which is the bottom of the three meters in the top-left corner. Each time you fill the meter, you'll level up, and gain a new skill. There are 18 levels overall.

You'll probably get this in your first playthrough, as you go for 100% completion. Otherwise, you'll get this on your second playthrough on the same save file.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/14.jpg Quick as lightning - 15:gsicon:

Finish the game under 3 h. 30 min.

THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS MISSABLE

This is best done on your second playthrough, alongside your Hardcore playthrough, once you're familiar with the game and what you have to do. Try to complete each chapter within an hour, and be sure to skip cut-scenes by pressing :start: twice. Be warned that pausing the game seems to keep the timer going, and dying and repeating sections also adds time to your total. If you find yourself having to redo sections multiple times, it is best to quit to the main menu and continue from there.

Since you don't want to waste time fiddling with puzzles on a speed run, try to remember their solutions, or keep them handy. Alucard's solutions can be found under the Puppeteer and Light Guide achievements. Trevor's are as follows:

Vertical Prison:

- Use Shadow Magic on the third symbol

- Use Light Magic on the second symbol

- Use Shadow Magic on the first symbol

- Use Light Magic on the fourth symbol

Clock Tower (Speed Boots):

- Use Shadow Magic on the first symbol

- Use Light Magic on the second symbol

Your total time can be seen when you select your save file at the start of the game.

Finish the game on Hard without lowering the difficulty or enabling navigation aids from the map

THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS MISSABLE

See I'm Dracula! achievement. This can be stacked with the Hardcore playthrough.

Finish the game on Hardcore without lowering the difficulty or enabling navigation aids from the map

THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS MISSABLE

WARNING: Do not turn on the navigation aids or change the difficulty from the menus. Doing so will void the achievement, and you'll have to start a new playthrough.

Hardcore difficulty is unlocked when you complete the game once. You must start a new game on your completed game file; any progress you've made will carry over, so you can continue to gain levels and find items.

The main differences with Hardcore are:

- Enemies hit much harder on hardcore, so you will die much quicker. Avoid as many fights as possible, and only fight when the game forces you to.

- There are no mid-map checkpoints, so if you die, you'll resume back at the beginning of the map. The game creates a new checkpoint every time you enter a new map, so you can create checkpoints of your own if you need to save progress.

- The in-game navigation is turned off by default, so there won't be any red arrows pointing your way. The objective will still appear on the map, so you'll know where to go.

It is recommended you reach 100% in the your first playthrough on Easy or Normal before you start Hardcore; this way, you can focus on completing the game as quickly as possible, and without having to look for collectibles.

Solve the Theatre puzzle without clues

THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS MISSABLE

WARNING: Do not examine the red corpse on the right side of the screen. Doing so voids the achievement, and you'll have to do it on another playthrough.

Alucard encounters this puzzle about a third of the way into his act. You'll enter a room with a large puppet head at the top, two puppet hands on the right, four blocks, and multiple platforms. The object is to move the blocks so that the upper puppet hand is destroyed.

1. Start by pushing the Weight block from the right side to the left, and leave it next to the Flame block so that is in place for the left claw to grab it.

2. Pull the switch. This moves the Weight block to the middle platform.

3. Move the Fire block to the right side, and stop under the hand. This will burn the puppet hand, releasing the Wind block.

4. Move the Fire block to the left, so that it can be grabbed by the right claw.

5. Pull the switch three times. This moves the Fire block to the top, and Weight block to the bottom.

6. Move the Weight block to the left, so that the claw cannot move it.

7. Move the Wind block all the way to the left side of the screen.

8. Jump into the wind, grab the ledge on the top-left, and then jump to the platform with the Magnet block.

9. Move the Magnet block into position for the left claw to grab it.

10. Pull the switch four times, so that the Magnet block is on the bottom level. (This will also move the Fire block to the bottom, and back up.)

11. Pull the Magnet block to the right, just under the pressure plate on the middle platform.

12. Move the Weight block into position for the claw to grab it.

13. Pull the switch, and the Weight block moves up the middle platform.

14. Move the Magnet block, and use it to grab and move the Weight block onto the pressure plate. This opens the hatch under the glass tubes in the center of the room.

15. Pull the switch until the Fire block is back on the top platform.

16. Move the Wind block to the center of the screen, just under the glass tubes. This forces air through the tubes, and pushes the Fire block under the upper puppet hand, burning it, and completing the puzzle.

Here is a video from RustoGaming showing the solution:

Solve the Carousel puzzle without clues

THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS MISSABLE

WARNING: Do not examine the red corpse on the left side of the screen. Doing so voids the achievement, and you'll have to do it on another playthrough.

Alucard encounters this puzzle about two thirds through his act. You'll enter a room with many orbs, two switches, and a light beam. The object is to arrange the five moveable orbs so that the beam hits the spinning carousel at the top center. The beam does not hurt Alucard.

1. Pull the left switch.

2. Pull the right switch.

3. Move the middle right orb all the way to the right.

4. Move the bottom orb, so that it the beam hits the orb just below and to the left of the right switch.

5. Move the middle left orb so that the beam hits the orb that is second down on the left side.

6. Move the top left orb so that the beam hits the first orb at the top of the screen. This completes the puzzle.

The solution can be seen in the video from RustoGaming shown under the Puppeteer achievement; it begins at 3:00.

Kill 1000 enemies

Provided you go for 100% completion, you'll net anywhere from 500 to 700 kills on your first playthrough. You can then either use the chapter replay to rack up additional kills, or get them in a subsequent new game on the same file, as they'll carry over.

You can see your total amount of enemies killed by choosing the Leaderboards option from the Main Menu or Pause Menu. The first leaderboard displayed will be for total kills.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/23.jpg The great pirate king - 30:gsicon:

Finish the Boss Rush mode on HARDCORE

This is the toughest achievement in the game.

Boss Rush mode is unlocked when you complete the game once. It is available from the main menu, and has four difficulties to choose from. In it, you'll have to fight all ten of the game's bosses, in order, with only one life, and no health refills. The health, magic, and ammo upgrades you've found in the story carry over to this mode, so be sure to tackle it when you've got 100% completion in the story.

The bosses are: Night Watchman, Necromancer, Succubus, Reaver, Daemon Lord, Dracula, Executioner, Lady of the Crypt, Executioner 2, and Dracula 2.

General tips:

- Practice, practice, practice! You'll need to know the bosses' attack patterns very well, so you can make it to the end with as little damage as possible.

- If using items, charge them up for longer duration or more power. Doing this still only counts as using 1.

- Try to defeat the first three bosses as Simon without getting damaged. You can use his protection spell to prevent damage, as you'll get some magic replenishment while fighting the bosses.

- Don't bother using items as Simon; they don't do enough damage, and you'll want to save the ammo for Alucard.

- Alucard's bosses are probably the toughest to fight. If you manage to get past all three, it is likely you'll finish your Boss Rush playthrough.

- If you need to, use Alucard's mist form to steal health from bosses, but don't overdo it, as it will drain your magic quickly.

- Use Alucard's hourglass on the Reaver and Daemon Lord. This will help immensely.

- Trevor's four bosses are pretty straightforward, and you can use Light Magic to heal yourself if needed. You'll have infinite magic when fighting Dracula, and you'll constantly be getting health back, with both magics.

- If you have ammo left, use Trevor's items on the second Executioner, so you can attack from a distance while avoiding the fire bombs.

- Fortunately, you can fail the Daemon Lord's electricity QTE, and Dracula's fireball QTE without penalty. The QTE will simply restart.

Completing Boss Rush on Hardcore will unlock all the other Boss Rush difficulty achievements, but you might consider trying the mode out on a lower difficulty to practice and get a feel for it. See the individual achievements for each boss for tips on how to defeat them.

Below is a video from On3ManCr3w of a Hardcore playthrough with no health, magic or ammo upgrades. This isn't a recommended way to play, but good to watch so you know what to expect, and see some fight strategies in action.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/1.jpg Lights out! - 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Night Watchman

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Night Watchman is the first boss Simon encounters. You can be fairly aggressive with him, as most of his attacks are easy to avoid.

His main attack is two swings of his staff, followed by an unblockable third swing. He'll call for support three times during the fight, and you'll have to take the creatures out before resuming the fight with him. When he has half of his health left, the room will go dark, and he'll send his staff floating around the room. You can dodge it easily by rolling under it. He does this three times, each time the staff getting faster. Once you've drained his health, he'll flash white--grab him with :rtbut: to end the fight.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/2.jpg Dust to dust - 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Necromancer

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Necromancer is the second boss Simon encounters. His scythe has a long reach, so he can be trickier to fight. Use your protection spell to help deflect damage.

He'll start by attacking you with his scythe, and summoning skeletons and zombies. He is a flying boss, so use your :ybut: attacks to hit him. If you get too far away from him, he'll throw his scythe like a boomerang, so be sure to jump over it. After you've done enough damage, he'll take away your protection spell, and call down green fireballs from the sky, while continuing to attack you with his scythe and skeletons and zombies. Just keep attacking him.

Eventually, he'll move to the center of the area, and protect himself with two rotating green shields. Wait for the openings on both to line up, then roll in to continue the fight. After this he'll teleport from side to side, throwing green energy blasts at you. Jump over or roll under them, and attack him before he teleports away. Once his health is all gone, he go back to the center, this time with three shields. Roll to his position and take him out with :rtbut:.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/3.jpg Not my type - 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Succubus

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Succubus is the final boss of Simon's act. Once you defeat her, the act will end.

She attacks with fireballs, a spin attack, and an occasional shockwave. All are easy to dodge. She is nearly always in the air, so hit her with :ybut: attacks. Once you've damaged her enough, she'll encase herself in a shield. Hit the shield until it glows white, then shatter it with :rtbut:. Keep attacking, and she'll go to a concubine to replenish her health. Get close, and pull the concubine away with :rtbut: and :xbut:. She'll do this twice.

Do more damage, and she'll make two clones of herself, and encase them and herself in shields. The real succubus starts at the top, then moves to the right. All three will send out an occasional fireball, so keep an eye for them. Attack the real one until you can grab the shield with :rtbut:, then keep attacking her until the fight ends.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/4.jpg Curiosity killed the cat - 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Reaver

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Reaver is the first boss of Alucard's act. He fights on ground level, and can be tough the first time you fight him.

He mainly attacks by biting, or swinging his tail at you. Once in a while, he'll send some smaller creatures at you, so take them out quickly. Attack him with :xbut: or :ybut: attacks, but try not to use too many combos, so you can dodge out of the way. If you need to get around him, use your mist form to pass through him, as jumping over him is not possible.

Do enough damage, and you'll be prompted to use :rtbut: on a chandelier on the ceiling. This will pour oil onto him, and continue the fight. Repeat this once, and then he'll move to the upper level and start throwing exploding worms at you. Dodge them, and he'll rejoin the fight. Attack him some more until you're prompted to use :rtbut: a third time, and this will end the fight.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/5.jpg System shock - 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Daemon Lord

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Daemon Lord is the second boss you fight as Alucard, though you will fight and lose to him at the beginning of Act II. He's a big guy, and takes up a lot of the screen. You can mostly use the same tactics as you did against Reaver. It is also good to use the hourglass to slow time and get more hits on him.

He'll swipe at you with his claws, jump at you, and shoot a laser beam from his tail. He can also send out a shockwave by slamming his tail on the ground; block it with :ltbut: when it approaches. Keep enough distance between so you can hit him, but still dodge his attacks. If you need to get around him, jump up to the magnetic railing, as you cannot use your mist form on him.

After doing enough damage, he'll jump to the back of the room, and start up some spinning lasers. Avoid them, and destroy one of the machines, either the left or right. The fight resumes, and he'll eventually jump to the back again, and you can destroy the other machine.

After both are destroyed, he'll grab you, and there will be a quick QTE, so mash :xbut: when prompted. After this the fight moves to the back platform, and he'll send out lots of shockwaves and be much more aggressive. If you need to get to his other side, use your mist form.Wail on him you can, and he'll eventually flash white. Grab him with :rtbut:, and the fight will end.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2826/6.jpg This is not how a vampire dies - 15:gsicon:

Defeat Dracula

This is story related and cannot be missed.

Dracula is the final boss in Alucard's act. You'll fight him alongside Simon, so try to position Simon between the two of you to serve as a punching bag.

He mostly attacks with his whip, but he can also shoot fireballs, and charge across the screen. Be cautious, and try to block either of his first two whip attacks, then counter-attack. After you do enough damage, Dracula will take out Simon, and keep fighting you. Keep attacking, then Dracula will return to his throne, and Simon will attack you. You'll need to block Simon's whip attacks, and dodge his axes and holy water, then grab him with :rtbut:. Do this three times, and Dracula will resume fighting both of you. Once he's out of health, the act will end.

Defeat the Lady of the Crypt

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Lady of the Crypt is the second boss in Trevor's act. She is a complete pushover on any difficulty.

She starts by swiping at you with her claws. Block them, and counter-attack. She'll scream, then switch to an unblockable charge attack. Jump over her to avoid it, then attack. She'll scream one last time, alternate with both prior attacks, and also try and grab you from the ground. Once you've drained her health, you can grab her with :rtbut: to end the fight. Then a series of QTEs will begin, which are relatively simple. Complete this sequence to be done with her for good.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/forum/../images/achievements/2826/8.jpg The bigger they are... - 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Executioner... twice!

This is story related and cannot be missed.

The Executioner is the first and third boss is Trevor's act. He is a large boss, with easily avoidable attacks. He does hit hard, though, so try not to get hit too much.

Maintain some distance from him, as most of his attacks are close range. He has a large axe that he will either swing at you, or smash into the ground. He can also grab you, and you'll have to mash :ybut: to escape. He can charge at you from either end, which will require you to double-jump to get over him. Finally, he can also do a belly flop; you can either roll under him to avoid it, or just back up.

Just keep whittling his health down when you can, and use :xbut: or :ybut: combos when you feel comfortable. Eventually, he'll flash white, and you can grab him with :rtbut: to end the fight.

The second time you fight him is identical to the first, except there will be hunchbacks in the background throwing lanterns at you. When you hear them yell and toss one, dodge out of the way so you don't get hit by the fire. They usually toss two, then move on.

Once you've defeated him the second time, you'll get this achievement.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/forum/../images/achievements/2826/9.jpg Sealed Fate - 15:gsicon:

Be defeated by Dracula

This is story related and cannot be missed.

This achievement obtained by fighting Dracula as Trevor at the end of Act III, and completing the game.

Dracula attacks you by alternating between light and shadow magic. You must defeat him by countering with the opposite magic, of which you have an infinite supply.

He starts by attacking with light magic, using his Void Swords. He has a four-hit combo with them, where the first two swings are blockable, and the last two aren't. He can also shoot energy blasts similar to the Necromancer's, and perform a spin attack which launches him (and you) into the air.

Do enough damage, and he'll switch to shadow magic. With his Chaos Claws, he has a three-hit combo, the first two of which are blockable; a ground slam which sends out a wave of fire on the ground; and an attack where he punches the ground, and fires erupts from where you're currently standing.

Do more damage, and he'll start switching between the two magics. He'll also add in one more attack, where he sends out a shockwave blast in all directions; it can only be avoided by switching to the magic he used to make it.

The simplest tactic, regardless of difficulty, is to use the same magic that Dracula is currently using. This way, he will do very little damage do you should he hit you, but you will also do minimal damage to him. However, with every successful blow you land, you'll regain some health.

Play cautiously, and wait for him to start his three-hit or four-hit combo, and block either of the first two attacks. Once you've stunned him, switch to the other magic and hit him with combos until he gets back up, then switch back to the same magic to protect yourself. Repeat this until the end cut-scene begins. You'll need to dodge fireballs while free-falling. Once you complete that sequence, the game will end.
