Is Microsoft working on the xvid problem?

I talked about that when the new dashboard came... and so far it have no been fixed at all. Let me explain...

Since a while we could play XVID on our 360 trough USB device... Now its freezing... then speeding up(to catch the time it was freeze) then it freeze again... its just a mess. Its unplayable...

Does microsoft give a damn about it or i will have to buy a DVD player with xvid support? Kinda piss me off honestly to have something REMOVED just because of a shitty dashboard i didn't want in the first place...

Might aswell go buy a DvD player that supports xvid. You could try contacting them but I doubt you'll have much luck finding an answer.

I will do tomorow... dosen't cost anything anyway... so why not.

Or get XBMC on a PC you're not using or on a Raspberry Pi.

Or you could just re-encode your stuff to something your xbox can actually read.

I can burn a DVD of the movie of course, makes menu over Windows Movie Maker and such, but usually it takes 45 mins to encode and burn on my computer... and when i do make a DVD out of a movie, i like to make my own custom menus, own music and such, it takes time to do, and if you never saw the movie you don't wanna spoil anything right? I usually make a DVD out of it only after i have seen the movie. What i did was watch the movie on my Tower computer... but its in my room... updtair(i game in the basement.. so i don't disrupt my roomates sleeps) and i prefer watching movies on my tv anyway...

Get your movies in x264 .mp4 format, i don't think too many people use xVid anymore anyways.

In term of Porno yeah.. most are mp4... but in term of regular movies there 80% if not more in a AVI format... Does the xbox read MP4 anyway? Never tried... cause honestly i don't care watching porn on the computer or TV... LOL But when it comes to watching regular movies... i always used my 360 since the update that was... damn... years ago...

I find it really ANNOYING AND STUPID they remove something that used to work fine... and its not like its impossible anymore, it seem to just BUG, so it could be fix... seem to me like its not something they wanted to do, cause if that was, they would simply remove the function all together. WMV seem to work fine(but its microsoft native format... so well...)

There are so many better options than trying to use the xbox as a media player. Im sure microsoft does not have much interest in fixing video playback of private files that does not make them money.

You could get a raspberry pie and sd card for dirt cheap and set it up as a media player.

You could get one of the countless media streamers like the popcorn hour or wdtv live that will play almost any media format you can think of.

You could set up a htpc.

Whats a rasberry pie... i mean exept the obvious real pie...

I know i can buy a DVD player that have slots for USB stick or SD card... will cost me around 70$, it aint THAT much, but you don't feel annoyed at all that the xbox used to work fine for it and just stoped because of the unnessary dashboard change?

Im sure microsoft does not have much interest in fixing video playback of private files that does not make them money.

Then why they put it up in the first place then? It was not avalaible at first. Plus even streaming videos from the dasboard lag... like watching the new halo 4 trailer for exemple... wich is something im sure they don't want to... And its not my connect, it worked fine before and youtube still stream perfectly on the PC, it comes from the xbox.

Solution. Don't use the Xbox 360 console to watch movies!

Thats dumb cause it was made for it too... putting another dvd player just take unnessary space and personally i started watching DVDs with the ps2 back then, i never got a dvd player cause the consols have did the job.

It's a linux box that you can get for $35 and it's easily convertable into a media center.

Or if you have an old pc laying around, you can go the XBMC route:

That's not a "just" solution. He'd be spending as much on just the casing for an ITX based machine as he would for a fully outfitted Pi with, hell, even a case made out of Lego.

As an example. I know you could get a tiny plain case for about $40, but that's still not counting the real expenses; he needs a board, a processor... that'd leave a bitter taste in the mouth for doing a job the Xbox previously did.

I would still go the HTPC route, mostly because it's (more) future-proof but if money is an issue, a Pi is a good choice.

Iirc, the Pi doesn't have any problem putting out 1080P without any stutter or problems, right?

I'd absolutely agree if there wasn't already other components that would be crowding up his living room/den/whatever. Someone who didn't have a 360 or Wii or anything else at all but wanted to take advantage of that kind of tech and didn't mind plunking down the money for it; I'd recommend it wholeheartedly. When it's not your main passion, though, and you spend most of your leisure time gaming...

Yeah, it's built to do 1080p. I mostly stream 720p from ThisWeekIn and ONN at the shop because that's what is available, but when I've played native 1080p files it's performed as well as my desktop.

Supported digital video resolutions are: 640 × 350 EGA; 640 × 480 VGA; 800 × 600 SVGA; 1024 × 768 XGA; 1280×720 720p HDTV; 1280 × 768 WXGA Variant; 1280 × 800 WXGA Variant; 1280 × 1024 SXGA; 1366 × 768 WXGA Variant; 1400 × 1050 SXGA+; 1600 × 1200 UXGA; 1680 × 1050 WXGA+; 1920 × 1080 1080p HDTV; 1920 × 1200 WUXGA.[72] Also to be supported are the generation of 576i and 480i composite video signals for PAL-BGHID, PAL-M, PAL-N, NTSC and NTSC-
The Broadcom chip on it is a pretty robust piece of tech, considering how little power it sucks. Edited by Felonious Monk

Lol thanks for the sugestions guys but im not a thecno freak if i can say... all i want is be able to watch some AVI movies on my TV(that is a squared boxed tv by the way).

If i got to invest ill just invest in a DVD player that can read AVIs... i know it won't cost me more than 60$... But like you said its just piss me off to pay considering the 360 used to do it and now its not. Its pretty much if tomorow retro compatibility would stop working... i could always plug back my old xbox but it would suck and take space... But in this case, i use AVI reading way more often than i play old games.

Its that i often download old movies, for exemple take Double Impact with Van Damme... old classic movie if your fan of the guy. But that movie is impossible to find in quebec in french these days unless you get yourself an old VHS copy and good luck finding one. I even tried to buy the blu ray edition out of HMV cause i tough it had french. Im glad i asked cause when i did the clerk answered it was only subtitled in french... it had only english and spanish... (spanish in quebec... but no french, make no sense...) The guy on the phone said to me it would had french audio when i pre-ordered... so thats why i did... didn't know it was subtitles only. Anyway bottom line the only way i could find the movie in french was trough a download on a french website and its a VHS rip

Like i said im not pointy when it comes to quality. I don't give a crap about HD, blu rays and such... as long as i can see the movie in the language i want and the pictures aint too disgusting.

Thats one case... other case is im a night guy mostly, live in a small village, video clubs close kinda early here, so when i want to see a movie at midnight, i go online and download it. If i really like the movie, ill buy it anyway... so i don't consider this too much "stealing" . Like i already said i own over 500 DVDs... Ocasionally i go to rent a movie but its all rented... so well i download...

Sorry for all this brick wall of text, but i just wanted to point out i wasn't crying because i couldn't "pirate" movies and watch them on my tv anymore... Its just sometimes its the most convenient way. Im a huge martial arts fan, and most of the movies i want to see and love are never release here in french(and half of them at all)... so downloading is the only option.

And yes, i prefer watching in french, even if i speak english, its my native language, grown up watching movies in french so for me it dosen't look like a dub... im used to it. On the other hand, an english dub of a chinese movie i can't watch... it annoys me badly... its like it scream dubbed in my face cause im use to watching movies in english in a different way.

Sadly Xbox is trying but with the NEW dashboard they are working on fixing the flash player for people who watch youtube via the Internet Explore app. if you want to watch Xvid videos buy a PS3 to watch them on it. I did and my boss knows it seeing as he says its nice to watch what you want on something that you can use as a Blu-ray player too

Hum ok so the issue goes to many other stuff too it seem..

Whats the point of putting explorer on the xbox anyway? I mean, when i was a teen and the dreamcast had a web brower i was happy and used it a lot. But back in that time lots of people still had 56k connection, and computers costed a lot more than now. As a teen i didn't had 400-500$ to invest in a computer... Now you can have a decent computer(not for gaming but for the rest) at 100$... LOL Everybody have a computer now, so really putting explorer on the xbox, especially at that late stage of the consol lifespan is really useless...

As for the PS3... tough about it, so i would also have a blu ray player, but considering i have no plan to buy a new tv and movies will continue to come on DVD for a while, it would be a waste of money... There aint much game i really wanna do on ps3... under 10 and i already have around 12 xbox games at home i haven't played yet... would not have time to do them anyway.

I found out last night.

When clicking on the NFS front page ad on dashboard to "buy it now", it took me to EA's Origin site through IE on the Xbox.

So that's the point. To put us through to their advertisers to content they control instead of MS that has to make a separate Xbox page for each ad. Lazy marketing where they get paid more to offer it as an option to their advertisers.

ugh.

Lol i see... yeah ads ads ads... full of ads... seem to me like every dashboard release is just putting more space for adds...

You can use PS3 Media Server, works on xbox and don't need to dedicate entire pc for it like XBMC. You can run PS3 Media server in the background and stream your videos on your xbox. It doesn't cost a thing.

What is is? I don't own a PS3 by the way...
