Felonious Monk
http://www.dvice.com/archives/2012/10/ethiopian-kids.php Dump off a 1000 customized Motorola XOOM tablets running a special version of Android in the middle of African villages and what do you get? Frisbees? Bum warmers? Light sources? http://gifninja.com/animatedgifs/113294/haruhi-suzumiya-bored.gif ALL THOSE BEAUTIFUL MACHINES ARE GARDEN MARKERS AND TOMBSTONES NAO AREN'T THEY No. "We left the boxes in the village. Closed. Taped shut. No instruction, no human being. I thought, the kids will play with the boxes! Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, but found the on/off switch. He'd never seen an on/off switch. He powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs [in English] in the village. And within five months, they had hacked Android. Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera! And they figured out it had a camera, and they hacked Android." http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqvebzjSad1r1sw0eo1_400.gif Bwhawhawha?! http://1-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/a/image/1348/09/1348093315502.gif Not bad for not being illiterate just a few months prior. This is actually the first I heard of the OLPC project actually doing something awesome. They had a project with their "indestructible" laptop (which XOOMs are not) a bit ago that wasn't so much internet dependent as it was completely ad-hoc in the same way that piratebox/librarybox/meshnet stuff impresses me: http://one.laptop.org/about/specs These XOOMs seem to be taking it another direction, though, instead of building their own local networks are connecting to the world at large if they've got some additional app support (because I doubt much development is happening there on the spot, seeing as a full environment (Mac, Windows, Linux, whatever) would be necessary to build and deploy. I bet they'll get there, though. All objections to my animated gif posting style and further discussion to be posted below and will be routed to the appropriate SERIES OF TUBES care departments. Gamerdude5448
......Wat. I'm going to assume it's because the kids have nothing to do the entire day. Still, that's impressive. Edited April 26, 2013 by Gamerdude5448
Ty-Rex
They seem to growing at an exponential rate. Maybe, after a year, they will create Skynet.

LickableLemons7
I guess it's gotta be a pretty entertaining way to learn, and the kids find out how to grow up and teach themselves, but I find it disturbing that this was labeled as an "experiment." StayonTarget
http://wheresmysammich.com/images/35860.jpg It's interesting, but if all I had for 5 months was a tablet I could figure that out as well.
CrazyMv94
Maybe a high enterprise such as Microsoft should hire one of these children for a job that way the world can be a better place, if that's possible, I've heard stories or children outside the rich homes getting jobs from things like these, I find amusing that the technology we use today can be founded into a way to learn something more than just a visual future, shit even a 9 year old can create using a single gadget could relate into a fortune. Bruce Lee Chop
Hey,do you have 5 months of nothing to do and no camera to take a picture of the stuff youre not doing? Well,go ahead and hack into the OS of Android! You all say it would be easy with that amount of time. Then consider they are just kids. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Cann0nSen5ei
Impressive, clever little foreigners. Shame since there is only so much you can do with a product of corporate espionage.
Lava Tonsil
Goddamn my need to nitpick. They didn't hack them, they turned the camera on from being disabled. Very impressive all the same but there just always has to be something to extend the truth beyond what was already an interesting read.
Felonious Monk
Goddamn my need to nitpick. They didn't hack them, they turned the camera on from being disabled. Disabled by the lab that created the distro. Chances are pretty good they needed SU access and didn't have a PC lying around to root. If they did it all from the command line, yeah, I'd call that a hack.
