Introduction:

Welcome to the achievement guide and road map for Gatling Gears! The achievements in the game are mostly easy, but two of them (Veteran and Can't Touch This) will require either a skilled partner or a lot of effort on your part. While you could technically get all of the achievements in one playthrough if you start out on hard, I highly recommend playing through the game twice so you can carry over your upgrades to hard and get experience with the levels.

Step 1: Normal/Easy Playthrough (Optional):

To start off, I strongly suggest playing through the game on either normal or easy difficulty. Easy is obviously easier, but normal will do a better job of preparing you for hard, which you're required to beat for the full 200http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif. In addition, you'll also be able to carry over your upgrades from this playthrough to do the hard difficulty achievement if you do this step first.

If you do chose to do this step, your main objectives will be to beat the game and get most of the miscellaneous level-based achievements along the way. Using the guide below, attempt to get Green Peace, Thunder Struck, Mine! Mine! Mine!, and Take it to the Max in this playthrough. In addition, you'll get the three campaign progression achievements in this step, giving you a minimum of seven achievements.

Step 2: Hard Mode:

If you did the first step, you'll now be able to just beat levels on hard through level select and get to keep all your walker upgrades. If you're starting here, it'll be a bumpy road, but check the achievement guide for some tips. Also, if you either didn't get them on the easy/normal run or are starting out on hard, go for Green Peace, Thunder Struck, Mine! Mine! Mine!, and Take it to the Max in this playthrough. If at any point you get aggravated, feel free to move on to the next step and come back to this later.

Step 3: Survival:

You can technically do this at any time, but the more skilled you are at the game, the easier this will be for you. To start, play through all three levels of survival mode to get Gladiator. From there, use the guide below to get Survival of the Fittest. If you managed to beat the game on hard, this step should be a breeze for you.

Step 4: Wrap-Up:

If you've followed the road map to this point, you'll only need two achievements: You Never Walk Alone and Can't Touch This. If you can get a real partner instead of a second controller, I'd recommend doing these together via the first method under Can't Touch This in the guide below. There are also methods for doing each achievement by yourself under the corresponding achievements in the guide. Either way, You Never Walk Alone will be easy, but a legitimate partner will make Can't Touch This much easier.

Conclusion:

Congratulations! You've earned the full 200http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif in Gatling Gears!

Clear all Survival mode arenas

There are three arenas in survival mode. The first is unlocked by default, and once you beat the first one the second one unlocks, etc. The main objective of survival mode is to survive for ten rounds, but arenas one and three also have secondary objectives to protect certain objects. If you lose the objects, you will fail and have to start over.

Since no difficulty is specified for this achievement, I'd recommend doing this on easy. With four lives, there isn't a whole lot of difficulty involved in this.

Complete a Survival mode arena without losing a life

This is best done on the first survival level (Tempest). You'll have to defend some towers as you fight, but the enemies are much easier to beat than the enemies on the other two survival levels. Since no difficulty is specified, I highly recommend doing this on easy - that will make this achievement a breeze.

There's not a whole lot more to say about this achievement, but here are some tips to help you:

  • Make the mine carts your first priority. If you lose a tower, you lose the level and have to restart from the beginning.
  • Use the spark bomb as a panic button. You only get one, so it should only be used in an emergency situation.
  • Stay moving. It's harder for enemies to hit a moving target.
  • Utilize your grenades. They're great for taking out mine carts (and enemies in general) from a distance, and they're easier to aim than the cannon.

Learn how to operate your walker and complete Bootcamp

This achievement is gained through campaign progression. This will unlock once you beat the first area in the prologue (Bootcamp).

Complete an area in Katharsis without getting hit

This is probably the hardest achievement in the game. The best place to attempt this is in area one (Terminal) on easy difficulty, but it's still not going to be easy by any means. There are two methods for getting this achievement. The first method involves co-op while the second method doesn't. The first is easier, but if you can't find a partner, the second may be your only option. Either way, the two following paragraphs will describe each method in detail:

The first method, as I mentioned, involves using a co-op partner. Your goal will be to hang back, and dodge bullets, only progressing when you need to in order to move the screen forward. Meanwhile, your partner will be moving around, destroying everything for you. Feel free to send in a few missiles or grenades if you see an opening, but your main focus should be not getting hit. Another advantage of having a partner is having two spark bombs. I very strongly recommend saving one for the final area, though, because you'll be swarmed by several larger enemies at the same time there.

The second method is less preferable and relies much heavier on your individual skill and memorization of the level. You'll want to inch forward through the level and shoot enemies as soon as you see a part of them on the screen. The reasoning behind this is simple: for most enemies, they have to be fully on the screen before they start shooting at you. By hitting them with grenades (or missiles, if you prefer) when they're barely visible, you'll be taking them out before they have a chance to shoot back. There are some enemies this doesn't apply for (like planes and walkers), so you'll still need to be on alert. There are also several boxed-in areas where enemies come at you in waves where this method doesn't work and you'll have to rely purely on your skill. Unfortunately, there isn't any way around that, and that's why the other method is preferred. One more thing to keep in mind is to save your spark bomb. At the end of the level, you're assaulted by a lot of larger enemies simultaneously. If you don't use it here you're almost definitely going to get hit, so always save it for this area!

Defeat Julius Steelwell and save the world by destroying The Butler

This achievement is gained through campaign progression. This will unlock once you beat the fifth and final area (The Butler) in the fifth and final level (Katharsis). Essentially, you get this achievement for beating the game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/1702/+x0GsA==.jpg Veteran 25http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.png

Complete all areas on the hardest difficulty

You have to beat the whole game on hard. Simply put, it will be hard. The enemies do a lot more damage on hard, and you only get two lives (as opposed to the three on normal and four on easy). If you can find a skilled boosting partner, I'd recommend playing through on co-op, but if one of you dies you both fail the level, so make sure that both your partner and you yourself are up for this.

A good method to use throughout the campaign on hard is to inch forward the screen and destroy enemies as parts of them become visible. Most enemies won't shoot until they're fully visible, so you can take advantage of that fact and pummel them with grenades before they get a chance to fire at you.

If you're having trouble with this achievement, here are some tips to help you:

  • Play through the game on easy/normal first and fully upgrade your walker. You'll have more health and better weapons that way, and both will help you survive on hard.
  • Stay moving. It's harder for enemies to hit a moving target.
  • You can fire rockets while aiming grenades and they'll be aimed where your grenade icon is.
  • Utilize power-ups. Weapon power-ups and invulnerability are duration-based, not use-based, so there's no point in saving them - they'll just wear off.
  • Learn the levels by playing them repeatedly on easy/normal. The better you know them, the more prepared you'll be.

Don't push over any trees in Trespassers

Trespassers is the first area of level one. This achievement is actually much easier than it sounds since the only way you can knock down trees is by running into/over them and only certain trees (the smaller ones) can be knocked down. With that in mind, just proceed through the level slowly and carefully. If at any point you do knock down a tree, just restart and try again.

If you're struggling with this because you can't avoid trees and bullets, just come back when you have the health upgrade maxed out, put the game on easy, and power through the bullets.

Destroy all lightning harvesters in Fog of War

Fog of War is level three, area two. In this area, there are eight lightning harvesters. They look exactly like the achievement picture, so use that as a reference. To get the achievement, simply destroy all eight. Here are their locations:

1. In the immediate area when a dialogue box pops up about half way through the level. It's plainly visible just to the left of the road.

2. Off a cliff to the right just past the first harvester. Since you can't walk to it, use grenades to destroy it.

3. Directly in front of you as you continue down the road.

4. Right beside number three.

5. After a sizable minefield, it should be plainly visible just off the side of the road.

6. After destroying the helicopter, there's another off the cliffside. Just like number two, use grenades to destroy it. This is pretty easy to miss, so make sure you're looking for it.

7. After number six, you'll cross a bridge. The harvester is off the side of the bridge at a lower elevation.

8. In the walled-in area (at the end of the level), there will be one on the left side of the screen. Once you clear this area out the level will end, so make sure you destroy it before taking out the second train that comes in.

Don't take any damage from sea mines in Tide of Battle

Tide of Battle is level four, area two. The sea mines only appear in the dried out lake bed that you cross, but that's also the majority of the level. Max will make a comment as you enter the area. The sea mines act exactly like normal mines, so as long as you don't get close to one, you should be fine. I recommend taking them out with your grenades from a distance as soon as they're visible to minimize your chances of having to replay the level.

There is one point where planes drop sea mines, and they'll explode upon impact if they hit you, which will disqualify you for the achievement on your current run. If you run northeast as soon as you see the planes, then hit the spark bomb when the mines are being dropped, you'll proceed without much trouble, though.

Defeat General Brutus by destroying The Excavator

This achievement is gained through campaign progression. This will unlock once you beat the final area (The Excavator) in the second level (Frostbite Pass).

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/1702/+-vjmA==.jpg You Never Walk Alone 10http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.png

Complete an area in co-op

This achievement is pretty self-explanatory. The easiest area to do this in is Bootcamp, and it can be done via XBL or local co-op. If you have a friend that can help you out, this will be a cake walk. If not, you can still get the achievement fairly easily, but you'll need a second controller.

If you opt for the second controller method, just use one of the walkers (the primary controller) to kill things and let the other one (the secondary controller) hang back. You'll occasionally need to move the second walker forward to progress, but on Easy you won't be in trouble much. Also, remember that you have a second spark bomb via the second controller in case of emergencies.

Fully upgrade your walker

Throughout the campaign, you can upgrade your walker at Pirate Shops, which are conveniently located near the beginning of each level. Each upgrade costs gold, and in total you'll need 68 pieces of gold to fully upgrade your walker. Since there are 78 pieces of gold in the game (three per normal area, one per boss area), this isn't as bad as it may sound. All of the gold pieces are in obvious locations, and a good 90 percent of them are out in the open and clearly visible from the main path. So just pay attention to the sides of the path as you proceed and you should have enough to upgrade everything completely by the middle of level five.

Also, note that only the upgrades count for this achievement. None of the Pirate Shop's unlockables count towards this.

Yeah, level five in general is pretty hellish on hard. I eventually just decided to take a break to keep my sanity. :p

If you do want to power through it, though, there seem to be 3-4 people in the co-op partners thread looking for help. I can't personally help since I don't have XBL Gold (my connection's really slow, so I don't want to pay for lag-filled online games), but I'm sure someone from the thread would be more than happy to help you out.

Fog of War is level 3, AREA 1.

I'll try to get that fixed before the guide's added to the main site, thanks for noticing!

Only five bucks right now on Arcade. Crazy.

Price drops for the win. I wish I'd held off a bit longer to get it, coulda saved myself $5. :p

Just bought it, its kinda shitty though. Survival was cake though was expecting to get fucked by it

The reviews kinda built this game up. It's not bad by any means, but there's nothing that really stands out about it, either...

As for survival, yeah. Piece of cake. I died once throughout all three levels.

I believe you have the difficulty scaled too high at 7/10 and it may be misleading to people who have never played it. Maybe you should consider 5/10 instead. 11/12 achievements are easy to moderate with the only challenging achievement being Veteran (complete all levels on Hard difficulty)

I played through the game on hard by myself and the only levels I encountered any difficulty where the last two, levels 5-4 and 5-5. Even those levels where easy enough to do by yourself once you learned the patterns of enemies within the levels. I can only assume it becomes even easier when you have a partner to play along with.

I've always evaluated things on a scale meaning 10 is completely or nearly impossible to get the full GS (like Ninja Gaiden 2) and 1 requires little to no effort for the full GS (like Avatar:TLA:TBE). Based on that scale, I'd consider a five as moderately challenging, which in my opinion the game exceeds. Admittedly that's due almost completely to the final areas on hard, but those are still required for the full 200 and need to be taken into consideration.

If everyone was as observant and comprehensive as you when it comes to enemy attack patterns (and I meant that literally, with no sarcastic connotations) I'd feel comfortable rating it at a five, but since the gameplay dynamics are so simple in this game that most people won't think about strategy to that degree, I still feel like a seven is a more fitting rating for the general public.

On Terminal, the first areas of Katharsis I can't seem to get the level to end on Hard. I get to the area at the end with the bigger waves of enemies accompanied by a huge tank. After I destroy the final tank nothing happens and I am stuck in that part of the area. Anyone else experience this? I Can not get 100% til I figure it out.

You should drop the estimated difficulty to like 6/10, the only problem is the level 5-4 and I guess the last boss, which I did not beat, cause I' stuck on 5-4.

Anyway, while playing solo and when you have a second controler I guess you can just get into the game and use the Smart Bomb when in danger and then just drop out, and connect once again - will I have another Smart Bomb then? I got to try this out.
