Introduction:

Volgarr the Viking is a 2D retro platformer in the style of Altered Beast. The game is fairly difficult at first, but pretty simple once you know how to get past certain spots. Getting the completion on this game will take a bit of practice and memorizing the layout of the levels and enemies. Each level also has an harder alternate version which is unlocked by completing the previous level with at least one Warrior's Spirit. If you met this criteria, you will be able to take the upper path in the treasure room. Warrior's Spirit acts as number of lives in this alternate path, so if you die too much, you will be dropped back to the normal level.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:

Explanation of how to get each Ending.

After each level except for the first level there is an upper path and lower path to choose from. Upper path is called Path of Valkyrie and lower path is called Path of Crystal. Upper path is only open to you if you have at least one Warrior Spirit in your possession at the end of the previous world. Warrior Spirit acts as number of lives in Path of Valkyrie, so if you die too much you are dropped down to the Path of Crystal.

Ending A: Beat every world except world 1 through the Path of Valkyrie and kill the final boss in World 7.

Ending B: Enter and beat world 6 through the Path of Valkyrie. Make sure you do not meet the condition for Ending A.

Ending C: Beat world 6 through the Path of Crystal.

After beating a world, you are allowed to skip it by going left at the beginning of the level. This forces you down to the Path of Crystal, so Ending A becomes unreachable by using this feature.

Playthrough 1: Ending A

This is the hardest ending to get, but going for this first allows you to only have to memorize the Valkyrie versions of each world. This will ultimately save you time.

Playthrough 2: Ending C

Just skip every world, clear world 5 as normal and then finish up Path of Crystal for world 6.

Playthrough 3: Ending B

Just skip every world, clear world 5 with at least one Warrior Stone to open up Path of Valkyrie for world 6. Kill Fafnir at the end of world 6 for the ending.

Mop-Up:

You may have a few misc. achievements left over like riding a spear attached to an enemy's shield, so finish those up.

Conclusion:

This game really takes me back to the good old days and gets everything right in every way. Graphics, controls, sound, animation are all awesome. The only complaint I have is that I felt the game was too easy. Especially the later levels I was able to clear on the first try as opposed to the first 2-3 levels which took 20-30 tries each.

Wield the fire sword

Your equipment is upgraded as shield, helmet, and then sword. If you get hit, you lose the latest upgrade that you received. So, in order to get the fire sword, you need to have the shield and helmet upgrade and then get the next upgrade without getting hit.

You can see me getting the fire sword upgrade at 00:55 in the following video.

Block a projectile with the shield while in the air

This is pretty simple. Just jump to block a projectile attack like arrows. In the video above, you can attempt this at 2:02 by jumping to block one of the spores that the plant spits out. You will have plenty of other opportunities so don't worry about this too much.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3103/94820-lo.jpg Let Off Some Steam, Bennett 50:gsicon:

Kill 4 enemies with a single charged spear attack

You can try this right from the beginning. Wait for four enemies to appear and then throw a charged spear (hold B until spear glows yellow). If it kills 4 enemies, you have 50:gsicon:.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3103/94821-lo.jpg Shield Gots My Back 50:gsicon:

Block an attack with the shield while on a rope/chain

First chance to do this occurs at 0:25 in the above video. While going up the rope, just wait for the snake to attack and block it.

Credit goes to amgfail for pointing this one out.

Follow as closely as you can the above video. I complete it with 30 seconds to spare, so you can make some mistakes here and there.

Unlock Mjolnir's power

These are hidden power up items usually inside walls. The first one is found in the video linked above at 2:14. Stab down to break the wall and pick up the item.

Just complete any world without getting hit. First world is probably the easiest but can be gotten on any world.

Collect a golden walrus statue

If you play the game without losing your equipment, it is 9th chest that contains this treasure. So try to get as many upgrade chest as possible without getting hit.

Thanks to DeeDubs for information on this.

Reach the alternate path for any world

Complete any level with at least one Warrior's Stone in your possession. At the end of the level, the statue on the top right will be lit up and the upper path will open up. Enter the upper path to go into the alternate (Path of the Valyrie) version of the next world.

Obtain a Warrior Spirit

In the above video, I get this at 2:14. This appears in a chest that normally has an upgrade. If you are fully upgraded when opening chests, it should be the 2nd or 3rd chest you open that contains this item. This item acts as number of lives in the alternate path, so try to get as many as you can if you are going for Ending A.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3103/94829-lo.jpg Don't Nidhoggr All the Ale 50:gsicon:

Reach Yggdrasil's roots

This is the final level for Ending A. If you kill Fafner at the end of level 6 without him changing to the dragon after having collected all 5 key stones from the previous 5 worlds, you will be teleported to Yggdrasil's roots.

Hitch a ride on a spear attached to an enemy shield

In alternate path of world 5, attach a spear to one of the flying enemies' shield and ride it all the way to the end of the level. Please refer to :30-:35 of the following video.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IIWfs9_6Go]Volgar the Viking (Xbox One) World 5 Korean Commentary - YouTube[/ame]

Note that this achievement just requires you to put a spear into an enemy's shield and get on top of it so it can be done on any world with enemies that have shields. First chance to do this occurs in World 3.

Simply complete the game with 10 or less retries. This will take a lot of practice. Below are my playthroughs for world 1-5. Unfortunately, I didn't record world 6 or 7. This achievement unlocks before starting the final world.

Thanks for getting a guide going. For the golden walrus it's getting 9 chests in a row without losing equipment. If you get every chest in the first world, the last one before the boss will have it.

Thanks for the clarification. I did not understand when/how Warrior Spirit or Golden Walrus drops.

You can actually get the vine block achievement right after the beginning where you can downthrust through the grey block in the room with a chest and two bees. Kill them and climb the vine out, and once you get up to the snake just turn around and put your shield to its back. It'll attack, you'll block, and achievement unlocks.

Thanks, I forgot that there is a vine at that point with access to this achievement.

Hi. Thanks for writing this. Although your way of getting "On the Highway to Hel" seems really useful, you do not have to go that far just to get the achievement. Just simply throwing the spear into the early shield skeleton's shield in World 3 and taking a ride for a few seconds is enough to get the achievement.

Also, not every gamer is able to get the 1000g in 15 hours max. I'm not that good at platformers and just beating world 2 took me like 5 hours and my total gametime just after one playthrough with a C-ending is like 14 hours. Although I am now better at it, I would still estimate getting the A ending takes me like 10 more hours at least.

Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, that achievement is possible to get in many places, I will re-word the guide. There are in fact places that you cannot reach without doing this and you are meant to do ride the spear attached to a shield.

Technically, the game can be completed in 1 hour. However, nobody will be able to do that. It's same the other way around. I consider myself a little better than the average when it comes to this type of games and it took me 11 hours for 1000G, which is why I put it in 10-15 hours range. Yes, some will be able to complete it in 5 hours, and some will take 20 hours or even more. I did rate the game's difficulty at 8/10 as well, so I feel that this is the right hour range for a gamer who feels confident with this genre of games.

I have a question regarding "Don't Nidhoggr All the Ale" .

You said you earn this with the ending B by killing Fafnir before he turns.

I unlocked the B ending achievement and the killing him before he changes achievement but not this one.

Did i do something wrong or am i mistaken in some way? :)

That's because you only get there on the way to ending A, getting all the 5 keystones is required to enter Yggdrasil and finishing it is required for ending A.

Kovy88 already answered you and he is correct. I'm sorry about the mistake. In order to enter Yggdrasil's roots you need to have all 5 key stones collected by going through the path of valkyrie for all 5 worlds, and have killed Fafnir before he turns into a dragon. (Requirement for getting A ending)

Thanks for the guide - it's OK apart from the bit where you say you thought the game WAS TOO EASY! Are you freaking kidding me? LOL

I understand your feeling about this, but I am fairly good at platformers, and my specialty are the ones that require memorization. So, this game happens to be my strongest genre. Enemies always appear at same place except for a couple spots, and they always do exactly the same thing. Add to that the fact the game can be completed in 20-30 minutes from beginning to the end makes this one of the easier platformers that I've played. I really enjoyed Volgarr and would love to play more. I hope they make a sequel that is a little bit meatier with more worlds to conquer and more variety to enemies and traps.

Ah i see, you ned to get all 5 keystones, and then perform the B ending which will lead you to the roots and in the end there is the boss for ending A !

Thanks for making that clear ! ;)

B Ending can be reached just by killing Fafnir before he transforms or by entering Yggdrasil's roots but fail during that world.

I rewrote the walkthrough part of the roadmap to make this a little bit more clear.

  • 3 weeks later...
quick tip guide on how to get Viking Legend

simply beat the game, after completing it, skip the world to 6, work your way through fafnir castle and kill him. yeah don't die more than 10 ;)

Easier way in my opinion: If you are going for ending A, by the time you get to final boss you will know the first levels so well that you will barely die. World 6 is so much easier on the top path that it's not worth memorizing the bottom one to try to die less than 10 times.

ALSO NOTE you dont even have to finish the game, achievement pops after world 6.

What I did in 27 jours is just go for ending A, all the time I played i kept redoing the same thing over and over...

First time I passed world 6 I failed to get to the final boss so I got ending B

Then i skipped everything and got ending C but now without dying less than 10 times

Next time I tried Ending A i got to level 7 before 10 deaths so achievement poped before world 7 even if i didnt finish the game

I've heard a lot of mixed opinions dealing with the difficulty of this game. I'm intimidated, I will admit that, but this is the only game with gold I haven't played yet along with the only one aside from Chariot that I don't have every achievement in. I don't want to start it if it's as difficult to get the 1000 as people say. Anyone who has the full 1000 I would appreciate your honest opinions.

I don't have the full 1000, but as a guy who's completed every Devil May Cry game to 100%, I can tell you this will be difficult. It will take the average person well over 20-30 hours to complete due to the number of worlds and memorization required.

Hmmm, alright. I guess it's a no go for me then.

Although 20-30 hours doesn't seem that bad.

Personally I love it because it's a throwback to the old 90's arcade days in terms of difficulty, but the complete the whole game with only 10 deaths will be rough. I say 20-30 hours though because I think some worlds only have 1 level. There are 7 worlds, and the first has two levels. It all depends.

You have to take into account the guy who wrote the guide is a pro at these sorts of games.

Would you say it's easier or harder than Chariot? I'm missing one achievement in Chariot, the gold in all speedruns. That game approximated over 70 hours
