Help! Coil jumping

Okay, it seems that being able to coil jump wall is the key to beating time trials. But I'm sort of confused on how to do it.

 

Should I always coli jump when I run, or just over gaps, or just certain gaps?

 

How long do I hold LT, should I tap it just before I hit the the obstacle? Or the entire duration of the Jump?

 

Why in the videos I've watched people coil jump with only one leg sticking out, but when I do it I stick out both legs?
