Breakdown:

This game is a pretty simple 200 to complete in a little over 5 hours at most. You will need to play the game on Normal, then Hard, and finally Ultra Hard for the "Gold digger" achievement which only unlocks when you "Take a Risk". The main thing you need to focus on is keeping your family alive, killing every eagle you see, and taking the time to go hunting every chance you get.

Normal Playthrough:

This playthrough will unlock the Hard difficulty (which in turn unlocks Ultra Hard) and also unlock most of the achievements in the game. Keep your family alive at all costs. You need to hunt every chance you get and when you do, hold off on grabbing the animal meat so that you can kill more animals before time runs out. You need the food but you also need to kill all the animals you can for "Psycho Killer," the longest achievement in the game. Also be sure to take on every quest you can, talk to everyone, and make sure you take the fork in the road that leads to a fort or large town. As you play the game, also watch out for eagles and shoot them to keep them from taking your kids.

Hard Playthrough:

This will be a little tougher than normal but keeping your family alive is just a goal to keep the game interesting. You want to continue hunting as much as you can, gather a lot of gold, and clean up any achievements you missed the first time.

Ultra Hard Playthrough:

This playthrough should be pretty short unless you still need a lot of animals for "Psycho Killer." When you get to the first river crossing that has the gold minigame, select the option "Take a Risk" and complete the minigame and it should unlock "Gold Digger". This is the only real difficulty related achievement in the game because this is the only thing that seems to trigger the "Gold Digger" achievement. If you are missing animals after this, keep playing and you should unlock "Psycho Killer" in this playthrough if you have not already.

Conclusion:

Overall, this is a pretty easy game. You can get most of the achievements in 2 playthroughs and you can finish up the last 2 achievements on ultra hard difficulty which should just take a partial playthrough to reach the river crossing and get "Gold digger." It's a pretty relaxing game that requires more time than effort and makes a decent addition to your Windows Phone game collection.

Get yer first food by killin' 4 small animals

This will be one of your first achievements. At the start of the game, you will go through a tutorial on how to hunt and you must kill 4 squirrels to complete it. As soon as you pick up the 4th piece of meat, the achievement unlocks.

Complete your first mission

This achievement is story related and you cannot miss it. You will get several quests as you play through the game. They involve taking strangers to towns or forts, meeting someone else in another town, and delivering packages. Some of these quests can be failed if you take a road that goes around your destination. As soon as you complete your first objective, the achievement unlocks.

Complete the first berries pickin' minigame

This achievement involves another tutorial. At the start of the game, you will come up to a berry bush. Simply finish the minigame and the achievement will unlock when you are done.

Cure a family member from illness or injury either by resting or by asking for help

As you play the game, your family will get sick. This happens very often. More so near the end of the game and you stay low on food a lot. Once someone gets sick, stop the wagon and have your family rest for a few days. This should cure whoever is sick and the achievement will unlock. If you keep going, there is a chance a random NPC will stop you and offer help. This will also unlock the achievement.

Visit 2 forts

There are several forts in the game and you will pass through at least 2 of them during your travels. Once you reach the second fort, the achievement will unlock.

Complete 5 missions

Keep doing missions for people you come across in towns, forts, and on the trail. This should unlock in your first playthrough as long as you make sure to talk to everyone to complete the quests and pick up new ones. Also, do not take any roads that go around your destination because you will not be able to turn in that quest or pick up any in that area.

Reach Sweetwater River junction with yer whole family alive

You will come across this fort pretty early in the game. If you are playing on normal difficulty then you should have little trouble keeping your family alive unless you completely ignore their needs. The achievement unlocks as you go into the front gate.

Reach the Salt lake Cutoff or the California Trail with yer whole family alive

This area of the game is a little over the half-way point. Make sure to keep going for food and keep your family rested. Do not worry about taking too much time. Keeping everyone alive is the important thing. Again, playing on normal will make this much simpler.

Reach Oregon with at least one other family member alive

See: "Dad of the year"

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/+MuJlQ==.jpg Oh my deer! - 10 :gsicon:

Kill 10 deers on yer way to Oregon

This achievement should unlock in your first playthrough. Remember to hunt every chance you get. Deer are pretty common early in the game so make sure you kill as many as you can when you go hunting. You can also wait on picking up the meat when you go hunting. If you do not pick up your limit, you can keep killing deer and grab what you need when the timer is almost up.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/+StxBg==.jpg Bull's eye - 10 :gsicon:

Kill 20 buffaloes on yer way to Oregon

Buffalo are pretty common in the second half of the game and sometimes you will come across a stampede running across the road and you can hunt them without the hunting minigame's limit. Remember to wait on grabbing the buffalo meat until the timer has run down a bit so you can kill more than required to complete the hunting game. You may kill enough for this achievement in your first playthrough but if you do not, this counts across all plays so you can pick up where you left off on your next playthrough if you do not unlock the achievement the first time through.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/-Ima-w==.jpg Bear scare - 10 :gsicon:

Kill 15 bears on yer way to Oregon

This achievement is the same as the one for the deer and buffalo. Wait on picking up the meat and kill as many as you can while hunting. You should get this in your first playthrough, but if not, the kills carry over.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/-WlibA==.jpg Chit 'n' chat - 10 :gsicon:

Meet at least 5 historical figures

As you travel down the trail, you will see people standing on the side of the road and will meet some in towns as well. Be sure to talk to everyone. Some of these characters are obviously famous and others are not until you talk to them. This achievement will unlock in your first playthrough as long as you talk to everyone you meet.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/-0hr2Q==.jpg Swap meet - 10 :gsicon:

Trade with Native Americans at least 5 times

You will come across the Native Americans several times in your game. Make sure to talk to them every chance you get and trade with them. If you do, there should be little trouble unlocking this in your first playthrough.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/UP2jK3Q=.jpg The Eagle's Landed - 10 :gsicon:

Reach Oregon without lettin' any eagle attack yer kid

This achievement is easily missed if you do not pay attention. While you travel, sometimes you will see and hear in the background, an eagle flying. If you are unsure or did not see it, your family will comment on it and say something like "I bet you can't shoot that bird." When you see the bird on screen, start tapping the screen and when the bird flies past the edge of the screen, your character will shoot it as it swoops down. It is pretty easy to kill but make sure you are paying attention while you play because they will show up a lot more as the game progresses. Once you complete the game, the achievement will unlock if the eagles did not grab any of your kids.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/UPxD0+c=.jpg Dad of the year - 10 :gsicon:

Reach Oregon with yer whole family alive

While playing on normal during your first playthrough, it should be pretty easy to keep your family alive. Make sure to keep them well fed and rested throughout the game and take care of them if they get sick. This becomes increasing difficult on harder difficulties so make sure to play the game on easy to make this achievement a lot easier.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/UP5i2lI=.jpg Psycho Killer - 20 :gsicon:

Kill 50 small animals, 20 deers, 50 bulls and 30 bears on yer way to Oregon

This achievement will take a couple of playthroughs to complete and will be the reason for a third playthrough if you need it

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/UP+CIsE=.jpg Gold digger - 20 :gsicon:

Collect 50 pounds of gold and 8 diamonds without gettin' any bad stones on yer way to Oregon

This will be one of the last achievements you earn unless you are missing some animals for "Psycho Killer". During the gold gathering games, you must tap on the pieces of gold and diamonds to collect them. If you tap a normal rock then your count resets. Tapping on leaves will not hurt your progress towards this achievement. There is one problem with this achievement, it only seems to unlock on Ultra Hard settings when selecting the option "Take a Risk", which gives you less time to collect gold and gives you a higher goal to reach. Play through the game at least on normal first and collect as much as you can on your first playthrough. When you reach the first river crossing with the gold gathering game on your Ultra Hard playthrough, select "Take a Risk" and the achievement should unlock when you finish that round.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1713/UPogyTg=.jpg Bear minimum - 15 :gsicon:

Reach Oregon without ever bein' hit by any animals

As you play through the game, do not get hit by ANYTHING. Try to stay in the middle of the hunting area and kill things as quickly as you can. I had got hit by a bear in one of the challenge stages and the achievement still unlocked, but I would not take any chances at all. It will unlock at the end of the game with any other endgame achievements you earned for that playthrough.

This achievement seems to only count hunting missions where you gather food. During the free for all sessions where you have to kill as many as you can in a time limit, it seems you can get hit and the achievement still unlock but try not to get hit at all to be safe.

Last night I did a playthrough where I know FOR SURE I never got hit during a hunting mission, but I did get hit by a squirrel on a free for all session and the achievement never unlocked for me.

So I definitely stress the "don't get hit at all" advice to those reading this.

Not sure if this was the case for anyone else, but I definitely unlocked the hard difficulty just by playing through the game once on easy. Maybe it is based on your total score (across all your playthroughs) rather than beating the difficulty above it in the menu. Maybe I just had a very good first playthrough. Otherwise, there is no explanation.

You should also mention in the roadmap that you need to make sure not to mess up any of the gold panning mini games (i.e. touch a rock), avoid getting hit in hunting, and also that you should trade with indians everytime on your first playthrough. I mostly just followed the roadmap and missed some of these achievements on my first play through. And because extra hard unlocked after my normal playthrough, I had to do an extra playthrough to get the indians one.

You could also be more descriptive for Gold Digger. It does require 50 POUNDS, not ounces which the game actually tracks. 50 pounds is 800 ounces. I dont think you can get 800 ounces in once playthrough. Also I think on TA they mention that you cant hit another rock or that resets the counter (leaves are OK to hit). I can agree with those guidelines as that is what I saw. Also, sometimes it is good to let gold go and try and get diamonds. You need 8 total of them, which you may not get if you just take the first gold pieces that come. The time limits for the mini game are generous in regular mode (not take a risk). So when you get into your very hard playthrough, just keep going doing take a risk everytime until you unlock it. Took me to the 3rd panning river I believe after my full normal playthrough. You can blow through very hard at the fastest travel speed and get to many rivers within about 30 minutes. Just dont worry about hunting or curing your family until there is only one of them left. Then your food decreses very slowly and you barely need to hunt. Also you can just ignore it and use money you get from the gold game to heal the family member. Always repair your wagon if it ever comes up (nail minigame) as if that bar goes down you lose. you can make it to oregon on hardest diff no problem like this in about 90 minutes total. which is what i did because i needed the native american trades...and for some reason they dont really start showing up until the later part of the game.

Great guide though for this simple and classic game! Thanks!

EDIT: Also, that bear and buffalo are way more common on the ultra hard difficulty. You get them very near the beginning of the game. When I played on normal, I got a lot of squirrels/rabbits/and deer. That should be in the guide for psychokiller. To help polish off what you need.

I unlocked both the hard and ultra hard difficulty after playing through once on normal.
