INTRODUCTION

Before we go on to the guide, here is a bit of need-to-know information on the Black Tarot and its cards.

This guide will help aid you in obtaining ALL of the available Black Tarot cards. The guide will also list what each card does, how much gold it costs to place them, and furthermore, what levels each card should be used on to make your life easier. It is recommended to play forward (even if missing a card's requirement) a few levels and gain other cards, then return to previous levels to obtain the missed cards in an easier fashion. It is also recommended to go for unlocking these cards on Daydream difficulty.

Cards are unlocked by completing certain tasks on each level, some being easier than others, some being a pain in the ass. Any time during the level, you can hold the :back: button to see your level stats. This stats screen will show you all of your current stats for the current level, including the card unlocking status. If you have completed a requirement for a card before completing the level, LOCKED will change to UNLOCKED in-game, letting you know you've done the requirement (along with the achievement unlocking). You must complete the level for the card to fully unlock, quitting once a requirement is complete will not work, but who would want to quit playing such an awesome game anyway?

Cards are placed in the Black Tarot screen before choosing a level to play or before progressing to the next level if already in-game. There are a total of 25 cards. Cards are placed by using gold, which you obtain in the various levels of the game by killing enemies and taking gold from them, destroying objects, and collecting Holy Items. Some cards are only available through DLC which are shown on the left side of the Black Tarot card screen. These are listed at the bottom with a different text color.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Gold is very easy to farm by replaying the level [?] with the Greed card on while destroying all objects, collecting all gold, and picking up each Holy Item.

Now onto card types. There are three types of cards, gold, silver, and black. Out of the whole 25; 11 are gold, 11 are silver, and three are black. Black cards are DLC cards and act as silver cards. Two silver (or black) cards can be placed at any one time, and three gold cards can be placed at any one time. You can have the same five cards placed from one level to the next without having to re-place them or lose/return gold. The amount of gold you spent on the currently equipped cards will be returned upon removing or changing your cards.

Gold cards can only be used a set amount of times in each level. Gold cards can be activated at any time in each level by pressing :xbut:. There are cards available that can allow you to use them more often in each level. One usage being the minimum and default amount, and three usages being the maximum via the Mercy card. Silver card effects last throughout the entire level, many of them being very useful on other levels to help with their respective card requirements.

A few additional notes: first off, the level listed under each card is the level you must complete the listed requirement on. Secondly, when completing a level, you may see another card slot that says N/A under it. This is because all levels can either have one or two cards to unlock on it, the ones with only one card will show a N/A where the second card would be. Just remember that it's not actually a card to unlock. Lastly, the coding for levels (the stuff like C0L00) is in the form of the level name, then (Chapter [#], Level [#]).

So, without further ado, onwards to the guide!

Card 01 - Haste

Effect: The world moves 2x slower.

Level: Tutorial

Requirement: Destroy all objects.

Card Cost: 100 gold

Type: Gold

WARNING: The game will prompt you to play the tutorial level when signing a new pact, make sure to choose yes. There does not seem to be a way to revisit the tutorial level once it has been played, therefore it is missable. If you choose not to play the tutorial, you will need to delete your save data and start fresh, this time making sure to play it.

This card is probably the easiest card in the whole game to obtain. There are six chests in the middle of the area and one barrel you must destroy. Simply destroy all seven objects and the first card is yours.

Card 02 - Endurance

Effect: Take only half of the damage.

Level: Cemetery (C1L01)

Requirement: Beat the level.

Card Cost: 100 gold

Type: Gold

Obtaining this card needs no guide, I hope. If it does, you probably shouldn't be playing this game.

Card 03 - Vitality

Effect: Increase base health capacity to 150.

Level: Cathedral (C1L02)

Requirement: Collect 500 gold.

Card Cost: 100 gold

Type: Silver

Make sure to destroy any objects that you come across to collect the gold from them and try to combine this requirement with the card below, 'Speed.'

Destroying objects will net you a decent amount of gold, but be weary as it will disappear if not picked up after about a minute of it being dropped. Getting gold from enemies will also aid in this requirement (refer to 'Card 04 - Speed').

Card 04 - Speed

Effect: Move faster.

Level: Cathedral (C1L02)

Requirement: Collect 330 pieces of gold dropped by enemies.

Card Cost: 100 gold

Type: Gold

For this card, you must collect gold from enemies which can only happen by constantly using the secondary fire mode of the Painkiller weapon. By spamming :ltbut: and using this fire mode, you will leash or pull the enemy around and gold items will fall out of their bodies with enough repetition. This can only be done a short amount of time before their body becomes a soul.

Keep repeating this process on every enemy you come across. On your level stats screen, under the listing for gold, the added gold (+ number) is the number which needs to be 330 or more. The gold you collect for this card will also count towards Card 03 - Vitality.

Here is a video to show you how to do the above gold retrieval method (credit to MrFPSDude):

[spoiler=extractgold] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x8vBqpaY-M]Painkiller Hell And Damnation - How to grab enemy gold 1080P - YouTube[/ame]

Card 05 - Soul Keeper

Effect: Souls stay longer.

Level: Atrium Complex (C1L03)

Requirement: Finish level in under 7:00.

Card Cost: 500 gold

Type: Silver

This is basically a speed-run requirement. Make sure to kill everything in your path as quickly as you possibly can and move through the level quickly, disregarding secrets and additional supplies. It can be quite challenging to get this one, as it requires being very quick as well as a good shot.

You may even need to memorize where enemies will spawn from and group them together for quick kills. Use either the Shotgun (suggested) or the Painkiller weapon's :ltbut: attack for maximum effectiveness and speed.

The best card setup to use specifically for this requirement would be Speed, Dexterity, and Double Time Bonus for your gold cards and Mercy and Fear for your silver cards.

If you still need help or need to memorize the spawn pattern to improve your run, check out this video of a successful attempt (credit to malice2kvideos):

[spoiler=atriumspeedrun] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZo5O_jCseM]Painkiller Hell And Damnation - Atrium less than 7 min - YouTube[/ame]

Card 06 - Blessing

Effect: Increase the initial health to 150.

Level: Enclave (C1L04)

Requirement: Kill Necrogiant in under 2:00.

Card Cost: 200 gold

Type: Silver

This card requires you to kill the first chapter's boss, the Necrogiant, in under two minutes.

This can be a little challenging but with the right cards, you shouldn't have a problem. All you have to do to kill this boss is shoot until dead. You shouldn't have a problem killing him in this amount of time. I would suggest using the first card you get, Haste.

The best and most efficient way to kill him is to first jump around the level towards the middle to collect ammo that you will need. Activate your cards and let him have it with anything you have. The Shotgun is the best weapon to use during pretty much every boss battle.

Card 07 - Double Haste

Effect: The world moves 4x slower.

Level: Opera House (C2L01)

Requirement: Collect 100 souls.

Card Cost: 300 gold

Type: Gold

Collecting souls is just like collecting gold, if you kill an enemy and don't take its soul right away, the soul will disappear after a brief period after the enemy has transformed into a soul. Make sure to take your time, go kill for kill and get each soul after the respective kill.

You can also use the Soul Catcher weapon as it leeches souls from the enemies. Take advantage of the bunny-hop mechanic to get hordes of enemies away from you and avoid damage as you return to pick up the souls.

Helpful cards to use to use on this level would be Soul Keeper and Soul Catcher.

Card 08 - Dark Soul

Effect: Morph into demon form at every 50 souls.

Level: Opera House (C2L01)

Requirement: Find all secret areas.

Card Cost: 400 gold

Type: Silver

There are five secret areas on this level. You must find all five areas including Holy Items (although Holy Items are usually included in secrets, i.e. a Holy Item is also a secret area). This is a good card and will be useful later when you reach Colosseum (however not needed).

Refer to the video below to locate all secret areas on this level (credit to axcel1138):

[spoiler=operasecrets] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTbbkwDMfSk](PC) Painkiller Hell & Damnation: Chapter2-1 Opera House Secrets [1080P] - YouTube[/ame]

Card 09 - Soul Catcher

Effect: Leech souls from a distance.

Level: Train Station (C2L02)

Requirement: Cut limbs of 100 enemies using Soul Catcher.

Card Cost: 500 gold

Type: Silver

The Soul Catcher (if you don't know already) is the weapon which has a spinning blade on the bottom and skulls in the middle of it. It's the very first weapon you get at the start of the game and it's chrome.

What you are going to want to do is keep trying to slice off the legs and arms of the basic gas mask 'soldier' enemies, as they will be the easiest to dismember. Dismembering them is done by firing a saw blade at their legs from the Soul Catcher by pressing :rtbut:.

Card 10 - Triple Haste

Effect: The world moves 8x slower.

Level: Alastor Tower (C2L03)

Requirement: Kill Alastor in under 5:00.

Card Cost: 500 gold

Type: Gold

Alastor is the second boss to kill during the campaign. This boss has several tiers to it instead of one simple shoot-to-kill battle. The first three tiers are simple, shoot-to-kill. The last one, however, requires you to injure Alastor enough to where he needs to heal using the giant statues.

For this fight, I suggest you use the Double Haste card.

Right when the level starts, collect as much ammo as you can around the area and don't forget to grab the armor. As Alastor comes into view, use whatever you have to take care of the first tier battle, but remember the Shotgun and Chaingun works best. The floor will cave in and the second tier battle will begin. When you see him again, do the same as before until the floor caves in again. The third tier is no different than the previous two.

At the last tier battle where the statues are, let him have it until you see him starting to heal himself. As soon as you see this, activate your card and destroy all the statues and then finish him off. You may not be able to destroy them all before the card runs out.

Card 11 - Time Bonus

Effect: Golden cards last 10 seconds longer.

Level: Oriental Castle (C3L01)

Requirement: Gib 123 enemies.

Card Cost: 100 gold

Type: Gold

To 'gib' an enemy means to blow them up into pieces, basically. The Rocket Launcher on the Rocket Launcher/Chaingun, grenades from the Stake Gun/Grenade Launcher, the Painkiller spinning blade attack, and the freeze then fire attack from the Shotgun/Freezer will all result in enemy gibbing. Repeat this with whatever you have until you finish this requirement.

Card 12 - Soul Redeemer

Effect: Souls provide more health.

Level: Oriental Castle (C3L01)

Requirement: Collect all Holy Items.

Card Cost: 1000 gold

Type: Silver

Holy Items are shiny gold crosses or grails that you can find scattered across levels. There are several types of Holy Items and you can see what they look like in the video below.

They are mainly hidden in secret areas, and more often than not are actually secret areas themselves. They can be a bit of a pain to find and even obtain sometimes, but below is a video guide to show each of the five locations on this level (credit to axcel1138):

[spoiler=castleholyitems] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwkCTPfGXxg](PC) Painkiller Hell & Damnation: Chapter3-2 Oriental Castle Secrets [1080P] - YouTube[/ame]

Card 13 - Iron Will

Effect: Enemies can't hurt you.

Level: Orphanage (C3L02)

Requirement: Gib 50 frozen enemies.

Card Cost: 666 gold

Type: Gold

To accomplish this task, you are going to need a good amount of freeze shots (minimum of 50 provided you don't miss any shots) for the Shotgun/Freezer. The ammo for this fire mode of the Shotgun/Freezer looks like light blue boxes with four cylinders in the top of it.

To 'gib' frozen enemies, you are going to need to first freeze an enemy by pressing :ltbut:, then proceed to shoot them with the primary fire by pressing :rtbut:. Repeat this process until you meet the requirement. This is also known as the freeze-then-fire method which is very helpful to use against larger and tougher enemies.

Card 14 - Greed

Effect: Double the amount of hidden wealth.

Level: Orphanage (C3L02)

Requirement: Kill all monsters.

Card Cost: 2000 gold

Type: Silver

There are a total of 140 monsters to kill on this level. Make sure to explore around the entire level and not miss any one area. There is an area around you in the swamps area at the beginning that most people would probably miss.

If you are having trouble getting all the kills or you are coming up short on kills, it is likely that an enemy was killed by other means or killed itself. Two enemy types can suicide; the bagged enemies and the straightjacket enemies with their arms crossed. You must kill them before they can suicide. Read THIS post for more info.

If you need to see a video guide, here is one of all 140 monsters on this level (credit to Thegamerwalkthroughs):

[spoiler=allmonsters] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWU12nhiRjk]Painkiller: Hell & Damnation - Orphanage - YouTube[/ame]

Card 15 - Dexterity

Effect: Weapons reload 2x faster.

Level: Swamp (C3L03)

Requirement: Kill Swamp Thing in under 4:00.

Card Cost: 300 gold

Type: Gold

The Swamp Thing is the third boss to kill in the campaign. This boss is fairly simple to defeat and doesn't take long at all really. For this fight you don't really need any cards.

When the level begins, immediately start shooting all the bubbles that you can. Try as best as you can to shoot them while the boss itself is beside them; this will damage the boss a little bit for you. Eventually you will notice bubbles around the outside of the level.

Destroy these as well as the floating bubbles that appear. At this point you will want to focus all your shots on the boss itself. Either during this segment or after one more bubble busting sequence you will be done with this battle.

Card 16 - Fury

Effect: Deliver 2x damage.

Level: Loony Park (C4L01)

Requirement: Kill 3 monsters in a row using saw blade.

Card Cost: 200 gold

Type: Gold

For this card, you will have to kill three enemies with one shot of a saw blade. The best way to obtain this is to wait until the popcorn bag enemies show up. They are the weakest and if you can line three or more up and take the shot, you will net it without much effort.

Card 17 - Divine Intervention

Effect: All cards can be placed for free.

Level: Loony Park (C4L01)

Requirement: Possess 25 enemies using Soul Catcher.

Card Cost: 0 gold

Type: Silver

To possess an enemy, you must first 'charge' the Soul Catcher weapon. To charge the weapon, you must keep collecting souls by holding :ltbut: down on enemies until all of the eyes on the skull of the weapon are glowing green.

Once all the eyes are glowing, begin to collect another soul and then while still holding :ltbut:, press :ltbut: once to fire a saw blade at the same time as you are taking the soul. Try to aim the weapon at a group of enemies and also at the ground.

You will have to re-charge the weapon each time. This can easily be done on any monsters throughout the level, and you can possess up to three enemies at a time as well, but they must be lined up and close together.

If you need help, this video demonstrates the process from 0:20 to 1:35 (credit to MrFPSDude):

[spoiler=possessenemies] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpZ3Z6S58LI]Painkiller Hell And Damnation - C4L1 - LooneyPark *Tarot Cards Unlocked - YouTube[/ame]

Card 18 - Double Time Bonus

Effect: Golden cards last 20 seconds longer.

Level: Colosseum (C4L02)

Requirement: Pick up every ammo box.

Card Cost: 300 gold

Type: Gold

This card's requirement is possibly the most annoying one because it's a very long level if taking your time (a little under an hour) and you can easily miss some ammo boxes. There are a few ammo boxes that will be located in three different secret areas. There are a total of 135 ammo boxes on this level. Make sure to search all areas and find all secrets, as there are boxes hidden in secret areas. If you cannot pick up an ammo box, you will need to fire at least one shot of the respective ammo type to pick up the box.

Use the video below and the information above to obtain this card (credit to painkillerzone for the video):

[spoiler=ammoboxesguide] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpQMX5tV0Ko]Painkiller Hell & Damnation - C4L2 Colosseum - Secrets - YouTube[/ame]

Card 19 - Replenish

Effect: Double the ammo in ammo boxes.

Level: Colosseum (C4L02)

Requirement: Morph into demon 3 times.

Card Cost: 500 gold

Type: Silver

To morph into a demon, you have to collect 66 souls and it will automatically happen. A demon morph allows you to plow through any enemy at virtually any range with a powerful blast attack. At the same time, your screen becomes black and white and enemies glow bright orange-red.

This is still do-able without any cards, but using the Dark Soul card will help you quite a bit for this card's requirement, effectively reducing the required souls to morph to 50 instead of 66 per morph. There are a total of 472 monsters (and souls) on this level, so you will need to collect 198 out of the 472 possible souls. You can miss 274 souls and still accomplish this task. However, with the Dark Soul card, you would only need to collect 150 souls.

A good tip to remember when going for this card is to not actually use the demon attack mode because it takes forever to run out and the monsters take even longer to turn into a soul. Sometimes you can blast all the monsters and forget about where you killed them, possibly missing some souls. Just bunny-hop around and wait for the current demon morph to end.

Helpful cards to use on this level would be Dark Soul (as mentioned already), Soul Keeper, and Soul Catcher.

Card 20 - Mercy

Effect: You can use golden cards three times per level.

Level: Shadowland (C4L03)

Requirement: Kill Grim Reaper.

Card Cost: 2000 gold

Type: Silver

The Grim Reaper, as you could imagine, is the final boss of the game. Killing him is simple, just keep filling him with saw blades. There are plenty of ammo containers lying around for your saw blades, as well as health bonuses. Killing him (even on Trauma) should be a trivial task.

Make sure to keep bunny-hopping around the normal enemies and ignore them, as killing them will cause the Grim Reaper to regenerate health.

Card 21 - Rage

Effect: Deliver 4x more damage.

Level: Shadowland (C4L03)

Requirement: Collect all Holy Items.

Card Cost: 500 gold

Type: Gold

There is only one Holy Item on this level. To locate it, as soon as you spawn in the level, follow the road straight down (going past the Grim Reaper) and take a right after the third tree on the right. Follow this path and on the left side of the path, you will see a destroyed building and behind this building there will be a wall. The Holy Item is tucked in where the wall meets the ground in the far right corner.

If you're having trouble locating it by my horrible directions, try this video (Holy Item is from 0:48 to 1:15 in the video, credit to malice2kvideos):

Card 22 - Last Breath

Effect: Health regeneration when you're dying.

Level: City on Water (BONUS)

Requirement: Find all secret areas.

Card Cost: 500 gold

Type: Silver

This level cannot be played until you beat the game once. There are six secret areas to find for this card. Please visit THIS post on TA which lists all locations and how to reach them.

Getting the tarot card in Atrium Complex is an adrenaline rush! You can't even do it, unless you more or less master the bunny hop system. Managed to finish the level in 6:56 :D

Such an adrenaline rush... Wish more cards had similar requirements. Makes you remember, why old school FPS's were awesome in the first place.

However, getting all kills in the Orphanage level is a pain in the ass >_<

REGARDING THE "KILL ALL MONSTERS" PROBLEM IN ORPHANAGE STAGE:

If you're having trouble getting all kills in Orphanage. Here's how to kill all monsters. Play on any difficulty, and progress as usual. Before entering the house, you should have 43 kills. After you're done with the house area, you should have 114 kills when entering the room with Daniel lying on the hospital bed. Use ONLY the Painkiller weapon (spinning blade) to kill all monsters. I've been struggling with killing all of them, always finishing with 139/140. It seems that projectile weapons could cause an enemy to kill itself, so it negates a kill for you. I don't know if this was a coincidence, but I got the achievement/tarot card using only the Painkiller. I know that it sounds stupid, but it worked, at least for me.

I like a challenge in games but I must admit I'm sick and tired of that atrium complex level. I CANNOT speedrun it in under 7 mins I'm always anywhere from 20 seconds to 15 seconds late, I did get 7:07 at one point but I haven't been able to replicate it since.

Can anyone give me some additional tips such as what tarot card setup you used, time saving hints etc. I used the speed card, cards last 10 seconds longer and dexterity(faster reload) for the other ones I used: cards can be used 3 times in 1 level and base health at 150.

I really want to 1250 this game but at this moment it's looking pretty unlikely.

Can it be done in co-op? or are there more enemies in co-op?

Don't use the gold cards. They slow down the enemies and their spawning but the clock carries on at normal speed.

Isn't that just for the cards that slow down time though? Other cards like Speed or Dexterity don't slow the world, they just give you additional benefits.

So in the case of the 7 minute requirement, the best setup would be:

Speed, Dexterity, and Double Time Bonus

Mercy and Fear

I suggest using Fear now because that extra 10% off the health might be enough to easily kill enemies with the shotgun from longer ranges on Daydream.

It's as nev said not all gold cards affect the time of the game world.

I tried using the setup Nev suggested and I managed it at 6:54!!!. I actually could have done slightly better as I messed up in taking what I thought was too much time in getting to the final checkpoint. I pressed back to pop up the time when moving towards the final one and accidentally touched it(was going to restart) then realised it was still the best time I'd ever had and just decided to give it a go and thankfully did it.

It's Trauma Time!!!

Nice! You can definitely complete this game now.

I think that achievement is the hardest one. Someone else said Trauma is easy and they did it in under three hours I believe. I also changed the guide for that card to reflect what I posted.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've noticed why the Orphanage achievement is causing problems. It is because of enemy types in the last 2 areas. In the second last area the enemies with bags over their heads explode by themselves which don't count as a kill, if you don't take them out before they do. Try not to let them group up on you. In the final area, the enemies in straightjackets... two of them have their arms secured, these are also ones that explode and don't count towards kills, if you don't deal with them yourself.

I noticed because using the painkiller as mentioned above, I still finished the 2nd last area with 110 kills instead of 114.

Being aware of that and using the painkiller as mentioned above, just to be on the safe side, I got the achievement on my 2nd attempt.

Although the guide is titled Black Tarot Card Guide, it refers to only the gold and silver cards. What are the 5 black tarot cards? I have the two mentioned above, so I'm guessing the remaining 5 are yet to come, with further DLC. I'm guessing we're getting the PC DLC, and I think Operation Zombie Bunker is coming soon as they've been flashing screen shots from it again in the past few days.

I have the two mentioned above, so I'm guessing the remaining 5 are yet to come, with further DLC. I'm guessing we're getting the PC DLC, and I think Operation Zombie Bunker is coming soon as they've been flashing screen shots from it again in the past few days.

It will cover all cards. The black tarot is what the cards are referred to. 'Black Tarot' cards. Black in the title does not refer to the actual 'black' cards, if that's making sense. Black Tarot cards consist of gold, silver, and black cards. It was called the 'black tarot' in the original PC version.
