  • DLC: Breakdown

  • Difficulty: 6/10
  • Time to 100:gsicon:: 20+ Hours (and 5 separate days to grow 10 food)
  • Unobtainable: None

Welcome back fellow survivors, to the first downloadable content for State of Decay. Revisit you favourite post-apocalyptic zombie survival game in a mode that only gets tougher, the longer you resist the horde. In Breakdown, story missions are removed allowing you to solely focus on survival; collecting resources and fortifying your home. After you have established you base, it is time to think about leaving the valley. You are tasked with finding an R.V and using it to make your getaway, and doing so, moves you on to the next Breakdown level with all the goodness that entails, such as decrease resource count and an increased zombie population. The question is, how long can you hold out?

So reload those rifles, and fix up that R.V because escape is your only option…

As far as achievements go, this is a pretty standard list that slowly increases in difficulty as you progress through the Breakdown levels. The achievements themselves are each linked to in-game challenges that you must complete in order to unlock playable ‘Heroes’ who each come with their own special attributes and weapons. Progress made for each challenge can be found by pressing :dup: in-game and using :lbbut: to swap to the Challenges tab, to see an overview.

You should attempt to tackle each challenge as it becomes available (except for ‘The Father’ and ‘The Scholar’, as these will be saved for playthrough 2, and ‘The Killer’ which may require playthrough 2 or even 3), and have each level’s challenges done, before you progress onto the next Breakdown level, because ones that are not completed will reset upon starting the next level. E.g. 20/25 Headshot streaks will erase back to 0/25 when you progress a level. Ultimately, you will want to reach Breakdown Level 6 on your first playthrough unlocking 'The Sacrifice', 'The Dead Man', 'The Judge', 'The Survivor', 'The Mercenary', 'The Ninja' and 'The Scientist'. Then use a second playthrough to earn the trickier challenges on Level 1, that are best to start with a hero and a clear focus on just completing them to earn 'The Rescuer'.

Thanks to Baihu1983 for the R.V Survivor Exploit, allowing you to take everyone with you when you advance Levels!

Achievement Guide:

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UPvFSHQ=.jpg The Sacrifice 10:gsicon:

Go Out in a Blaze of Glory (Breakdown Level 1 or Higher).

This achievement is exactly the same criteria as ‘Ya Always Were An A-Hole Gorman’ from the original SoD list.

For this you are tasked with sacrificing a character using an explosive device, as they are about to die. You should know that before you attempt this, death is permanent. You can attempt to turn your Xbox before it saves, but it is much easier just to sacrifice a useless character with un-leveled stats. This is best attempted on Breakdown Level 1, so that the character will not be too high level to be needed.

You need to equip your chosen character with a throw-able explosive such as a hand grenade or petrol/fire/incendiary bomb. Stash the characters other gear away as you will not need it. Next, move into a street and hold :rtbut: and press :xbut: in order to taunt the local zombies, causing them to come and attack you. Let them drain your health bar so that you go into the ‘downed’ position. Let them carry on attacking you, causing you secondary health bar to drain. Once you are about to die, spam :rbbut: as much as possible, causing the character to detonate the explosive and take out the surrounding zombies.

This achievement corresponds with ‘The Sacrifice’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Erik Tan to play as.

*If you are having trouble finding explosives, try Military Stashes in the northern fairground, or bars and liquor cabinets in homes for Molotov’s.*

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UPyiAgc=.jpg The Dead Man 10:gsicon:

Kill 5 Bloaters (Breakdown Level 2 or Higher).

For this achievement/challenge, you need to have repaired the R.V once and moved onto Breakdown Level 2, then, you need to kill 5 bloaters either via headshot or not.

In case you are unsure which zombies are bloaters, they are the swollen, yellowish infected that slowly move about, attempting to explode on you.

You should always use guns, silenced if possible, to tackle these zombies as when they exploded, their noxious gas will damage your health and stamina. This can be deadly on later Breakdown Levels, when coupled with the threat of a horde. The best place to find these enemies is in urban areas. Head to the top of a lookout to see if you can spot any, but they are not too hard to come across. Or you can wait until a Bloater Zed Hunt.

This achievement corresponds with ‘The Dead Man’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Andy Pimms to play as.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UP6DC7I=.jpg The Judge 10:gsicon:

Perform 50 Zombie Executions (Breakdown Level 3 or Higher).

This achievement tasks you with first reaching Breakdown Level 3 by repairing the R.V twice. Now you need to execute 50 zombies. To perform an execution, you can either use a melee weapon or bare hands to down a zombie so that they are lying on the floor or crouched down on their knees. Once an enemy is down, press :lbbut: and :ybut: to put weapon to head, and finish the zombie off for good. By Level 3 you should be adept at executing zombies, and this achievement should not pose difficult.

This achievement also corresponds with ‘The Judge’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Judge Constance Lawton to play as.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UP5no40=.jpg The Survivor 10:gsicon:

Collect 150 Resources (Breakdown Level 4 or Higher).

This achievement is rather simple. You need to keep on collecting resources such as food and medicine like you have being throughout the game. When you take you duffel bag back to the stash, it will display how many you have collected in the top left hand corner. Amounts can vary from +4 food, all the way up to +15 food. Don’t forget that when you search a location, you can press :ddown:, and select to call in scavengers who will have a look around and collect resources.

Beware, Breakdown level 4 is where the game truly begins to challenge with increased hordes and special infected. Prepare properly with plenty of ammo, meds and snacks before venturing out.

This achievement also corresponds with ‘The Survivor’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Job Wilkerson to play as.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UPnkQcE=.jpg The Mercenary 10:gsicon:

Destroy 5 Juggernauts (Breakdown Level 5 or Higher).

Juggernauts, also known as Big ’Uns due to their extraordinary size, will begin to have an increased presence once you progress onto Breakdown Level 5. These enemies are the most difficult of the special infected to put down, and can soak up a large amount of damage. I suggest loading your pack up with a rifle, a bunch of explosives such as grenades or Molotov cocktails, or if you have one, a grenade launcher. Resist the urge to ram Juggernaut’s with your car as they will instantly pop the front tyres and cause massive damage to the engine, and at Level 5, cars are just too valuable. If you must use melee, do not do it alone but in a group. A 1 on 1 encounter is almost impossible to win at Level 5, with only the most skilled of players coming out with little to no damage.

The best place to find Big ‘Uns is though Besieged mission, as one will normally show up towards the end of the event which you can take down from inside the safety of the house. Due to the sporadic nature of their spawning, there have been reports of people driving around for a couple of hours and not seeing one, and then seeing 2 in a short space of time. The area between Marshall and The Fairground seems to have a heightened chance of them spawning.

This achievement also corresponds with the ‘The Mercenary’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Leon Montague to play as.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UPgEuVI=.jpg The Ninja 10:gsicon:

Execute 50 Stealth Kills (Breakdown Level 5 or Higher).

Another achievement requiring Breakdown Level 5, this one tasks you with sneaking up on 50 zombies, and performing stealth kills on them. To enter ‘sneak mode’ you need to hold down :bbut: until your character crouches down. You will need to move behind a zombie, avoiding their field of vision and not making any noise. Next, to perform a stealth kill from behind, press :lbbut: and :ybut: to plant the zombies face into the ground. You will need to stick to bushes for cover and observe your surroundings, to pick off single zombies one by one.

For this challenge it is essential that you use a character with a maxed out Wits level, and no special technique so you can unlock the Ninja ability. (Andy Pimms is perfect). This allows you to hold :lbbut: while sneaking to move faster.

This achievement also corresponds with ‘The Ninja’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Shark Hoodie Guy to play as.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UPolsOc=.jpg The Scientist 15:gsicon:

Reach Breakdown Level 6.

By now, you know the drill. Using all the skills you have learned so far, you will need to repair the R.V one more time to progress to Breakdown Level 6. A large stockpile of healing items and weapons, combined with characters with upgraded attributes will be needed to survive Level 5.

This achievement also corresponds with ‘The Scientist’ in-game challenge, and thus will unlock Walter Degrasse to play as.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/1805/UP+HWx4=.jpg The Rescuer 25:gsicon:

Unlock All Heroes.

All of the previous achievements, have led up to this; completing every challenge in order to unlock every hero. After reaching Breakdown Level 6 (and having played your cards right unlocking each challenge as you go), you should have 31/34 challenges completed, leaving just the 3 listed in the intro, to do in another playthrough.

[*] http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131212001620/stateofdecay/images/f/f4/Eli_wilkerson_portrait.jpgThe Bruiser – Eli Wilkerson

1 - 100 Blunt Weapons kills

Simply kill 100 zombies, using the vast array of blunt weapons that the game offers you. Weapons such as the crowbar, pipe threader or wrench.

[*]http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131212003610/stateofdecay/images/8/84/Owen_lykins_por.jpgThe Cop – Owen Lykins

1 - 50 Pistols kills

You are tasked with killing 50 zombies with pistols. The easiest way to do this is by aiming at the head to take out a zombie in one bullet. Use pistols like the ‘G’ range of firearms, M9 or X-Lock.

[*]http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140107015036/stateofdecay/images/2/2a/Pastor_william_mulroney_por.jpg The Believer – Pastor William Mulroney

1 – Earn 500 fame

Fame is earned though levelling up survivors at a rate of 4 fame per attribute level, completing missions such as Besieged (about 25 fame) and Zed Hunts for various amounts, building facilities suggested by Lily (25 fame) and collecting resources. Collect 500 on Level 1 before moving to Level 2.

[*]http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131230030814/stateofdecay/images/6/64/Thomas_Ritter_por.jpg The Father – Thomas Ritter

Max out every type of facility

This is best left until your second playthrough on Breakdown Level 1. You can start you game with a Hero such as Amelia Crasman (who has max Cardio and Fighting) to easily run around and collect the ample resources without trouble

You will need to build and upgrade all facilities which will require a ton of Construction Materials; Sleeping area to a Bunkhouse, Basic Workshop to Machine Shop, Basic Workshop to Munitions Shop, Storage area to Refrigerated Storage, Garden Area to a Greenhouse, Medical area to a Medical Lab (requires upgrade at Library), Watch Tower to a Shooting Platform, Library, Dining Area, Cooking Area, and a Training Area to a Dojo

Inbuilt facilities do not count towards this.

It is best to max out 5 facilities, and then tear them down and build and max 5 different facilities, then tear those down and build the final one.

[*]http://s1.postimg.org/mtipysl63/ray_santos.png The Dealer – Raymundo Santos

1 - 400 kills with car door

Drive around in cars smashing zombies with your car door. Aim at a horde and hold :xbut: to open the driver side car door. Perform this on Level 1, as it has the most abundant amount of cars, and zombies will do dramatically less damage to your car as they will in later levels. Try not to hit zombies with the front of your car as this will not only slow your progress, but degrade your car quicker.

[*]http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140208105359/stateofdecay/images/3/33/Charley_Marshall_por.jpg The Scholar – Charlie Marshall

1 - Complete all research projects

Again this is best left until you second playthrough at Level 1. You should work towards this as you go for ‘The Father’. For this you will need to construct a Library and research the 8 possible projects. Some will require other buildings to unlock which I have put in brackets.

The projects are: Research Greenhouse Gardening (Garden), Research Biodiesel (Storage Area), Research Chemical Incendiaries (Medical Lab and Munitions Shop), and Research Potent Homemade Stims (ML). There are 4 weapon upgrades and each one must have its predecessor unlocked first, as those are: Research Box Mine (MS), followed by Research Whistling Box Mine, then Research Pipe Bomb and finally Research Steel Pipe Bomb.

[*]http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131230022704/stateofdecay/images/8/87/Alan_Gunderson_por.jpg The Killer – Alan Gunderson

1 - Kill a dying community member

This challenge will require a playthrough of its own, to make it a simple as possible. Start on Breakdown Level 1, and recruit extra survivors such as a nearby Enclave. You need to make sure not to do any of their missions as not to become ‘Friends’. Make sure you do not build a Medical Area or have any Medical resources in stock. Now disconnect your Xbox from the internet and advance your clock in 1 day installments until you have a survivor who is ‘Gravely Ill’ and away from home. Next, Press :dup: and then :ybut: on the ill character to get them to ‘Check In’, and tell them to come home. This should prompt the mission to pop, and complete it for the challenge. (Reconnect to LIVE before you complete the mission, to obtain an online time-stamp for your achievement).

[*]http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131128085125/stateofdecay/images/3/32/Char-erik_tan-por.jpg The Sacifice – Erik Tan

1 - Go out in a blaze of glory

Refer to ‘The Sacrifice’ achievement.

[*]http://s11.postimg.org/jksyvjcsf/female_cpt.png The Taskmaster – Cpt. Diane Montressor

1 – Play for 10 hours

This challenge will not reset when you advance Levels. Play for 10 hours.

[*]http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131113055624/stateofdecay/images/a/a8/Ed-photo.jpg The Friend – Ed Jones

2 – Reach level 2

Fix the R.V in Level 1, pick who to take with you (or use the R.V exploit) and advance to Level 2. You will be randomly placed back in Trumball County to start your journey again, but this time, with increased difficulty.

[*]http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140107012259/stateofdecay/images/0/0d/Becca_Collins_por.jpg The Phoenix – Becca Collins

2 - 100 kills with fire

Stack up with thrown fire weapons such as petrol bombs, firebombs or chemical incendiaries. Take a number of noise making objects such as Wind-Up Clocks with you, which you can use to attract hordes to a location before throwing a fire bomb at them. Rinse and repeat until you have 50.

[*]http://s12.postimg.org/kjrakvf6x/female_cpt.png The Enthuasiast – Lyanna Carter

2 - 100 Light Edged Weapons kills

Simply kill 100 zombies, using the vast array of edged weapons that the game offers you, such as the Cutting Machine Blade, Machete or Pirate Cutlass.

[*]http://s17.postimg.org/wdgraqqzv/female_cpt.png The Mother – Heather LaRue

2 - Cook a feast

You need a Cooking Area and someone with the ‘Good Cook’ attribute to accomplish this challenge. Press :dup: and then :lbbut: to navigate to the Facilities menu. Find the Cooking Area, the select ‘Prepare a Feast’. You may need to go out and find a special ingredient.

[*]http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130611160605/stateofdecay/images/4/47/Hoffman.png The Convict – Sam Hoffman

3 - Reach Level 3

Fix the R.V in Level 2, pick who to take with you (or use the R.V exploit) and advance to Level 3. You will be randomly placed back in Trumball County to start your journey again, but this time, with increased difficulty.

[*]http://s22.postimg.org/ie3dm07kt/female_cpt.jpg The Judge – Judge Constance Lawton

3 - Perform 50 executions

See ’The Judge’ achievement.

[*]http://s28.postimg.org/gyqjf1p9l/female_cpt.png The Fighter – Amelia Crasman

3 - Kill 5 Ferals

Ferals are the large, vicious infected that are keen on ambushing survivors. They will rapidly run along the ground on 4 legs and pounce on a character, which can be fatal at later Levels. You can either use Feral Hunt missions, or go hunting on your own. But make sure to bring a companion with you by asking another survivor to come with you. You can also use a car to easily dispatch these.

[*]http://s23.postimg.org/ii8hwtdsn/female_cpt.png?noCache=1399929585 The Healer – Doc Hanson

3 - Create Stimulants or Painkillers 5 times

First you will need a Medical Lab, and medical resources. Navigate the Facilities menu by pressing :dup: and the :lbbut:. Highlight the Medical lab and produce a Mild Stim which cost 1 medicine. Do this 5 times.

[*]http://s16.postimg.org/fcrw2jx01/female_cpt.png?noCache=1399929974 The Biker – Joel Macon

3 - Create weapons in the workshop 5 times

For this you will need a Munitions Shop. Using the same process as above, highlight the Munitions Shop in the Facilities menu, and create 5 weapons such as the Flame Fougasse.

3 - Grow 10 Food in the garden
For this challenge, you must first build a garden. A garden will provide 2 daily rations of food, and more if you have a ‘Plant Expert’. This should unlock 5 real time days after you first build your Garden.

  • http://s2.postimg.org/vrsm6mhnp/STATE.png?noCache=1399936355 The Sniper – Mickey Wilkerson
    4 - Earn 25 headshot streaks
A headshot streak consists of 5 zombie headshots in quick succession. If you have pulled one off, it will say ‘Headshot streak’ in the top right hand corner.

The easiest way to pull this off is to take control of either Erik Tan (and use an assault rifle in single shot mode), or Owen Lykins (with a pistol). Both of these characters will have the ‘Shootist’ ability allowing time to be slowed down whilst aiming with a tap of :lbbut:. Beware though, this will drain your stamina. The best method is to venture outside your watchtowers range and taunt zombies until you have a group of 5 slow zombies chasing you. Group them together, line up your first headshot and fire. Then activate the slow time ability and pick off the remaining enemies. Snacks can be eat to help combat stamina drain.

  • http://s28.postimg.org/zasq61dwp/STATE.png?noCache=1399936733 The Grenadier – Evan Woodrow
    4 - 50 explosives kills
For this 50 kills with explosives are required. Grenade launchers and mines DO NOT count. Only the Frag, M56 and Mk2 grenades and Pipe Bombs count. Grenades are relatively hard to find, so it is easier to just keep producing Pipe Bombs at your Munitions Shop. Take a load of them, and some ‘noise makers’ to attract the hordes and this should be done fairly quickly. Don’t forget a car in case you need to escape.

You will be randomly placed back in Trumball County to start your journey again, but this time, with increased difficulty. You should be seeing a notable increase in zombie population by now.
