Achievement Slang

I got a writeup on another site but I like the page enough to share over here too.

Seeing how the community is over here, the slang for achievements is thrown around alot. But how does that make you think about the people who use it on a regular basis?

I can understand why people come up with pet names, but I just won't use it myself. I guess the comic is a good representation of how I feel about it.

Also, if you call achievements something else that no one else does, I'd be curious as to what it would be.

I generally only say achievements. There are exceptions when me and a few of my good xbox live friends are joking around. One that me and my one friend really like to jokingly use is Chevy Cheevies.

It legitimately makes me cringe when people say or type cheevo, cheese mints or anything of the sort.

That comic was great though.

I've mentioned before that I see the term "cheevo" as a sign of laziness and poor education. It doesn't take that long to write or the word "achievement," so why would you need to shorten it? Plus, everyone knows what the term "achievement" means, which is not true of "cheevo."

Anyway, I occasionally refer to achievements as "my source of pavlovian arousal," but I rarely shorten the term.

"My Spa" for short. :p

I stick with "achievement", but I try to avoid saying "achievement". "Are we going to finish multiplayer?" or "Did you 100% ________, yet?" are some of my preferred alternatives.

achievements

I had to reference something familiar. You're actually the first to say anything about that. :D

"my source of pavlovian arousal."

Yikes. Can't blame a guy for REALLY enjoying their hobby.

I'm guilty of cheese mints with my inner circle. Cheese Mints, Mad Jelly, and other things. But sometimes people really do make an impression when it's their go to term like Doug said. Wish I can say I was better than that, but people cen't help themselves.

I'm guilty of "cheevo or cheevos" every once in awhile. I'd say 90% of the time I do use "achievement" or the specific name of the achievement.

Maybe I'll write a cheevo guide called "Ryot Control's Ultimate Cheevo Guide" and detail all of your cheevos. :p

I call them cheevos also. I don't see anything wrong with giving it a nickname. Well at least people know what I mean when I say cheevos.

I can deal with mispelling, after all english isn't the primary language everywhere. At least they tried. The slang really isn't even all that bad. But I guess the people who use it really show their personality when they beat it all up over and over follow it up with other made up words.

Like achieveables. Dammit Yunder, just typing that out just about gave me an angry twitch!

If you make a guide titled that, I'll be torn between flattered and a sad panda.

I agree. I say "bleep bloop" when I'm expecting one to unlock but cheevo and whatnot sounds freaking retarded.

Ya know. #Swag420YOLO69MURK

Haha, I remember the first time someone messaged me on LIVE and asked if I needed "cheevo" help. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what the hell I was being asked. Personally, I send messages through xbox.com for the ease of using my keyboard, so I don't use achievement slang.

I almost always say "achievements". Sometimes I say "achievables" as a joke because of the Red vs. Blue PSA about achievements.

SO MANY ACHIEVABLES

Yeah, when I'm being goofy I'll sometimes say this. Especially when I have "x for XXG" pop up.

I say "bleep bloop" in reaction to getting things done or stuff happening. I've not been called out on it yet.

Anyway, I occasionally refer to achievements as "my source of pavlovian arousal," but I rarely shorten the term.

And now I'm weirded out that my verbalization of "bleep bloop" may be considered ear pornography to Capn Doug.

And now I'm weirded out by the thought that there might be such a thing as ear pornography...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Pornographers

The name of the band was chosen by Carl Newman, who has said that he came up with it after watching a Japanese film called The Pornographers.[4] Many writers have assumed that the name was a reference to Jimmy Swaggart's reputed claim that rock and roll was "the new pornography."

I'd like to apologize in advance to anyone that will get porn banner ads by merely viewing this page. As you were.
