Unlocking Characters

Two ways, actually - through Story Mode or through Ambition Mode.

In Story Mode, each stage comes with a set of 2-4 selectable characters, and all of them will be unlocked for future use. However, getting all the characters this way will require you to do both Historic and Hypothetical storylines for each of the 4 kingdoms, in addition to a series of stand-alone missions for the 'Other'-class characters.

In Ambition Mode, any character that you defeat in combat gets added to your list of Allies, and by extension, becomes playable. Every third battle in Ambition mode is a so-called 'Duel', which will contain a number of affiliated 'Musou' Officers instead of the normal generic ones. However, since there's a limit to the number of allies you can have (increased as you progress), and you can't choose NOT to adopt any generic officer you defeat as allies, chances are you won't be able to collect all the playable officers until you're pretty near the end of Ambition Mode.

Ambition Mode is still probably the fastest way to unlock them all, though, so here's a quick guide: Once you're through the tutorials, play Skirmishes (interspaced by Duels) until you run out of space for allies. Then play 'Unconventional' battles until you've maxed out your Fame. Then play Skirmishes again. Repeat until your fame reaches 9999, finally giving you enough space for ALL of the officers. By then, most of the ones you're missing will be playable characters, so you can just keep going through missions (again, I recommend skirmishes) and doing DUels until you've got 'em all. Don't worry if you wind up missing out on a few playable characters due to hitting your ally-limit during a Duel - they'll just pop up as commanders in generic missions later, and as you adopt more allies, their appearance will become increasingly inevitable.
