Introduction

Flight Control Rocket is the sequel to the line drawing classic Flight Control. The object of the game is to direct ships by drawing lines to land on like-colored runways. While the original game only included a single game mode, FC Rocket has several game modes and has additional gameplay mechanics that really make it stand out from its predecessor. Unfortunately, the game is a major grind to complete. The developers added upgrades and boosts to the game, but the only way to get them is by using coins, which you earn at a ridiculously slow pace through playing the game. For a more information check out the review of the game from WPCentral HERE. Currently the game is listed at $2.99 in the Windows Phone Store.

Step 0: Flight School and Unlock Odyssey mode

First complete Flight School to unlock that achievement and learn the basics of the game. Then, play Infinity mode long enough to unlock Odyssey mode (you have to land a total of 500 ships). Take this time to get a feel for the gameplay.

Step 1: Odyssey mode

Complete the achievements related to finishing the levels of Odyssey mode and doing so without losing any lives (which are the most challenging achievements in the game).

Step 2: Miscellaneous mop-up

Complete any of the miscellaneous achievements you have left after finishing all the Odyssey mode achievements. Many of them will unlock along the way, but a few may remain. See their descriptions for the best techniques as some achievements are easier on certain game modes.

Step 3: Grind for the robots

After earning 16 of the 18 achievements, you will have two left that will require a downright grind. The game's monetary system is very unforgiving (i.e. you earn a very small amount of coins through gameplay compared to how steeply priced everything is). You need to earn 261,500 coins to purchase all of the robots, and then cumulatively earn millions and millions of points to fully level them up.

Conclusion

Flight Control Rocket is much better than the original, but also is way more of a grind to complete. While the game is quite addictive and designed well (other than the poor monetary system/grinding aspect), you will need to put a significant amount of hours into it to reach completion.

GUIDE

GENERAL TIPS:

  • Do not spend any coins on purchasing motherships. You will have enough trouble earning the 221,500 coins to purchase all of the bots for that achievement, let alone earning the 362,500 coins to unlock all the motherships.
  • Always use the More Coins Robot. It significantly increases the amount of coins you will earn in a game.
  • Use the bots to your advantage. They can provide noticeable boosts. The Swarm Robot is one of the most helpful.

ODYSSEY MODE ACHIEVEMENTS (7 for 70 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 7 achievements can only be earned in Intergalactic Odyssey mode. This mode is unlocked after landing 500 total ships in Infinity mode or Flight School.

Complete a game of Intergalactic Odyssey.

This achievement only requires that you complete a game of Odyssey, meaning you run out of lives and get a score at the end. You do not even have to finish a stage.

Complete Stage 21 in Intergalactic Odyssey.

These achievements are only related to completing the stages of Odyssey mode. When you enter into Odyssey mode, you are given three lives, losing one each time you crash the planes. Three crashes and your game is over. Fortunately, the game does allow you to start Odyssey mode from the beginning of the highest stage you made it to. So you just need to finish each stage without using all three of your lives to progress. When you are in the game mode selection screen, a bar will appear above which you can choose the stage you want to start on.

Know that completing a stage has nothing to do with score or landing a certain amount of planes; it is only based on time. For this reason, there is a way to make completing the levels much easier. See "Master Pilot" for more information.

Play 9 consecutive stages of Intergalactic Odyssey without losing any lives.

These achievements require that you complete consecutive stages of Odyssey mode without losing a single life (crashing any planes). Start on Stage 1 to make this achievement easier, as you need to complete 9 in a row without losing a life, and the stages just get more difficult as you progress.

Completing stages is not related to score or landing a certain number of planes. It is only based on time, which is shown by the draining bar at the top of the screen. Knowing this, you can use it to your advantage to make earning these achievements (and for just completing the later stages) quite easy.

The technique involves exploiting the slow yellow ship that drops tiny yellow ships that remain stationary. The game spawns ships based on how many other ones you have on screen and whether you have already drawn lines to the runways for them. Basically what you want to do is anytime one of the large yellow ships spawns, draw a long path for it around the screen so it drops all five of the little yellow ships (each one only drops 5). Then organize the little ships in a cluster near the corners of the screen. Try not to make them too close to the corners because other planes can still spawn there. Pay particular attention to ships spawning near your clusters (the "!" indicators show up where ships are spawning, look for those). Make sure to move the spawning ships on paths away from your clusters. With the ships that do spawn, it is easiest just to move them around the screen killing time. If you land them, more planes will spawn. The picture below shows how it should look. One my first attempt, I got all the way from Stage 1 to 12 without losing a life and eventually just crashed some planes to end it out of boredom.

The Swift Swarm bot is also good to equip when playing Odyssey mode, especially when going for this achievement. Swarm ships (small green ones that look like bombs) are some of the most difficult to handle due to their sheer number and slow speed.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/-pexCA==.jpg Procrastinator - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Complete Stage 1 of Intergalactic Odyssey mode without landing or crashing any ships.

Just load up Stage 1 and do not land any ships or crash any, letting the time run out. This is fairly easy. Only slow red ships will spawn. The round lasts 1 minute and only becomes mildly challenging during the last 10 seconds when about 10 ships are on the screen total. Be careful not to accidentally land any planes as you are directing them.

MISCELLANEOUS ACHIEVEMENTS (9 for 100 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 9 achievements are related to completing miscellaneous cumulative requirements or task and can be completed on any level (except "Malt Runway 1 / 2").

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/UPwx3kY=.jpg Certified Pilot - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Complete Flight School.

Flight School is the tutorial and is available in the game mode selection screen. It is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete. You might as well get it out of the way first.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/+PzgdQ==.jpg Landing 1,000! - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Land 1,000 ships on any runway.

See "Landing 10,000!"

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/+t3pwA==.jpg Landing 10,000! - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Land 10,000 ships on any runway.

You need to land a total of 10,000 ships in the game, across all the game modes, motherships, and runways. Don't worry too much about this one as you will need far more than 10,000 to complete the other achievements. Ships come at a much faster pace in this game compared to the original, so this one will come quick. You can check your progress towards 10,000 from the Main Menu by clicking on "Flight Log."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/+z0RUw==.jpg Finger Zinger - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Land ships on all three runways simultaneously.

This achievement requires that you land one ship of each color on the three corresponding runways at the same time. The time frame is not that strict, so do not worry about getting the timing exact. This will likely come without even trying through normal gameplay. However, this can easily be earned on an early stage of Odyssey mode with a little planning. Just stall ships and eye them up so they land on each runway simultaneously.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/-p-6qg==.jpg Full Screen Ahead - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Have 20 ships on screen.

You need to have a total of 20 ships on screen at the same time. This would be quite challenging to do under normal circumstances, but fortunately there exists some techniques to make this easy.

Basically you just exploit the large yellow ship (see "Master Pilot" for this technique) and the large green ship, either together or separately, depending on exactly what spawns. Cluster the small stationary yellow ships in a corner of the screen, as many as possible. Use the large green ship to quickly create small green ships that follow the same path. Just work with what spawns. See the image below for an idea of what this can look like. I have 15 small yellow ships in the top left corner, and have started spawning small green ships. I could easily get 25 total ships or more on screen with this set-up.

NOTE: The long snake-like chains of yellow ships only count as ONE ship on screen, regardless of how many ships make up the chain (though they do count as multiple ships for scoring and multipliers). This makes these the worst when going for this achievement. Get them landed as fast as possible.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/-38COQ==.jpg Pointy Ship 1 - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Get over 500 points for landing a single ship.

See "Pointy Ship 2."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/-V4LjA==.jpg Pointy Ship 2 - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Get over 1,000 points for landing a single ship.

You need to get 500 and 1,000 points for landing a single ship to unlock these achievements. Each ship has a base score, which is multiplied by the current multiplier when the ship lands, given the total points for landing that ship (the point value flashes when the ship lands). 1,000 points is easy to get and will come without even trying. This can be obtained in any game mode, but it easier in Infinity mode where you can earn a limitless color multiplier (as opposed to Odyssey where the multiplier is capped at x5). Also, to improve your odds, equip the Critical Score Robot, which will randomly give you extra points on ships you land.

NOTE: You are guaranteed to get 1,000 points for a ship when going for the x50 multiplier required for the "Malt Runway 2" achievement, so you should probably just follow the description for that achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/-L7zHw==.jpg Malt Runway 1 - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Get a red, green, or yellow runway multiplier of 25.

See "Malt Runway 2."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/-5nnEQ==.jpg Malt Runway 2 - 15 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Get a red, green, or yellow runway multiplier of 50.

Colored runway multipliers can only be earned in Odyssey and Rescue modes. This achievement requires you to get a multiplier of 50. Successively landing the same color ships in a row will add to the multiplier. Landing a ship of a different color from the current multiplier or crashing any ships will reset the multiplier. So, to earn this achievement, you need to land 50 ships of the same color in a row without landing another color, or crashing any ships.

This achievement is most easily attempted in Infinity mode. Ships of like color tend to spawn together for extended periods of time. You should attempt this with either large green or large yellow ships, which spawn smaller ships, as well as the yellow snake-like ships (each ship in those chains count towards the 50). Finally, the cargo ships which drop off 10+ ships of the same color can be useful as well.

This will take a little bit of luck. If a ship spawns of the wrong color, just stall it around the screen and don't land it.

ROBOT (GRIND) ACHIEVEMENTS (2 for 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 2 achievements are related to purchasing and upgrading all of the bots in the game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/+zVa8Q==.jpg Catch Them All - 15 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Obtain every bot in the game.

Bots are essentially passive power-ups that you can equip before starting a game. The do such things as increase your score, make ships move faster, give you extra lives, and make coin and XP payouts larger. There are 14 bots in total to obtain. You start with two already unlocked, but the other 12 must be purchased with coins. Coins are collected while playing the game, unfortunately at a rather low frequency, in two ways:

1) Landing the ships that are towing coins behind them

2) Tapping the large spinning coins that periodically fly across the screen

Make sure to purchase the More Coins Bot first and always have it equipped. This will make the painstaking process of earning coins faster, but not much. In total, it will cost 221,500 coins to purchase all the bots. With the More Coins Bot equipped, you will earn 100-200 coins per minute, depending on the game mode and luck, which equates to 35 to 75 hours of solid playtime just to earn the required amount of coins to purchase all the bots.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2583/+tWiYg==.jpg Max Them All - 15 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Get every bot in the game to level 10.

Each bot has the ability to rank up to level 10 by earning XP, which is obtained for each bot that you have active for a game (up to three at a time). The amount of XP you earn is 10% of your total ending score. You need to use each robot enough to earn the sufficient amount of score to level each up to 10. I am not sure of the exact amount, but you will need to earn a cumulative point total far into the millions for each bot. You will have to play many, many games with a given bot equipped. It is recommended that you don't use a bot anymore once reaching level 10 for it. Keep switching bots to maintain progress towards this achievement.

It may be worth it to invest in power crystals, which can be purchased in a shop. They are single-use items that multiply all of your XP in a game by 3. The crystals are pricey, but if you use one in a game where you earn crazy score, they pay off. The crystals only last for one game, and are applied in the bot selection screen before starting the game.

NOTE: Bots used have a charge that drains with use, and must be replenished before using again. The charge slowly replenishes with time, but can also be instantly replenished using batteries purchased with your hard-earned coins (the latter is not recommended, considering how slowly coins are earned and how many you need for "Catch Them All").
