Introduction

Crimson Dragon: Side Story is a side-scrolling shoot em' up game which has you controlling a flying dragon on the mysterious planet Draco. You are tasked with tracking down the cause of a disease that is rapidly spreading across the planet. Unlike traditional shoot em' ups, you only control the up and down motion of your dragon, while the game automatically transitions your through the level, dodging enemy attacks and executing some of your own. The game offers more than 170 unlockable attacks which can be chosen strategically to make your dragon a lethal, killing machine. The game boasts several difficulties and a loads of missions to add lasting value. For a more in-depth review of the game from WPCentral, click HERE. Currently the game is listed at $0.99 in the Marketplace.

Step 1: Complete Story and Mission Modes

Play through Story Mode. It is quite short and only involves completing 5 levels. Once you complete this mode, Mission Mode unlocks. Continue completing all levels in Mission Mode until no more unlock.

Step 2: Unlock all skills

Keep playing through Mission Mode and Story Mode to unlock all skills related to each mission.

Step 3: Awaken all skills

Awaken all the skills you have unlocked. You will need around 3,200 jewels to be able to awaken all skills. Obtaining this many jewels will take ages. See "White Reaver Unleashed" for more information.

Step 4: Mop-up

Finish any achievements you may have remaining. You likely won't have any left, but may need to grind some Dark Phantom kills to earn the "Dragon Master" achievement.

Conclusion

Crimson Dragon's many missions sound good on paper, but unfortunately they are just recycled versions of the same 10 or so levels, with only the order or the difficulty altered. The game offers some good shoot em' up action, but because of this, it gets old fairly fast. The five boss battles become particularly repetitive. The road to completing this game is long, ridiculous tedious, and occasionally can be challenging / glitchy.

SKILL-RELATED ACHIEVEMENTS (7 for 90 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 7 achievements are related to the many skills in the game.

Unlock all skills.

There are 171 skills in the game and unlocking all of them is quite a challenge and time consuming. You can look in the Skills Menu to see what the requirements are for unlocking each skill. Sometimes they are simple and only require you to complete a mission or do so using a specific skill. Other times they are more difficult and require you to achieve a high score or rank on a mission. Unlocked skills appear brighter in the Skills Menu, while locked skills appear dim. Skills with a question mark are only obtainable on a mission that you have not available yet. Complete more levels in Mission Mode to unlock more missions to make all the skills visible.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UP8XLFw=.jpg Take Up Arms- 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Equip yourself with a new skill.

This achievement requires that you awaken at least two skills in one category (Action or Sub). Once you awaken them, enter Story Mode or Mission Mode and in the next screen, select the skill category for which you just awakened those two skills. One of the skills will have been automatically equipped for you. Just equip the second skill you awakened and this will unlock. Equipping a different main skill does not count.

Power-up the White Reaver by awakening 5 skills.

See "White Reaver Unleashed!"

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UP4RMec=.jpg White Reaver Unleashed! - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Release the White Reaver's latent power by awakening all skills.

These achievements require that you awaken all 171 skills. To awaken a skill, you must first unlock it. Then you must spend the required amount of Draco jewels to awaken it. The requirement can be seen after you click the button to awaken the skill. Skills which have already been awakened have the dragon icon in them illuminated in white, as opposed to a dim, clear dragon. You will need 3294 total jewels to awaken every skill (thanks Zebrasqual). The only ways to get jewels is are:

  1. Original Base Level 3: *THIS IS THE BEST METHOD TO GRIND JEWELS* Each time you complete this level you will earn one jewel. This is your best method to obtain jewels, but doing this over 3,000 times will take a very long time.
  2. Completing Levels for the First Time: You will get a few jewels (around 5 or 10) when you beat each mission for the first time. Subsequent playthroughs will earn you no jewels for completion.
  3. Random Drops: Jewels randomly drop from some enemies, but the frequency of this is very rare. It only happens every tenth mission or so. There are a few skills that increases item drop and rare item drop chance, so I would suggest equipping these if you attempt this grind for jewels.
  4. GPS Jewels: Basically you earn a jewel for every 30km you travel, and can up to a total of 663 jewels from this method. After that, further traveling will not award any jewels (Thanks to Shadow Kisuragi for confirming this). See the "GPS Specialist" achievement for information on how to earn jewels via the GPS feature.
  5. Leaderboard Jewels: You earn jewels by raising your total leaderboard score, cumulative with all of your friends as well. The rate and cap on how many jewels you will earn is unknown. The best method to get your score up to is keep replaying the Level 3 Boss.

KILL-RELATED ACHIEVEMENTS (6 for 35 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 6 achievements are related to defeating enemies and can be obtained in both Story and Mission Modes.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPztr8Q=.jpg Shredding the Skies - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Defeat 50 enemies.

See "Swarm Exterminator."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPqOtRs=.jpg Buzz Kill - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Defeat 1000 enemies.

See "Swarm Exterminator."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPl0NoM=.jpg Swarm Exterminator - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Defeat 4000 enemies.

These achievements require that your kill 50, 1000, and 4000 total enemies. This is not that many at all, as there are several hundred enemies per mission. This will unlock early, well before finishing Mission Mode. All kills of all enemy types, across all missions and game modes count towards these achievements.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPlPRD0=.jpg Death from Above - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Defeat 100 enemies using only subskills.

You must kill 100 enemies with any type of subskill. Make sure you have a subskill equipped, which is done in the menu before loading into the mission. When in a mission, activate the subskill by pushing its circular button, which is located under the name of the subskill (under your health bar in the top left corner of the screen). Once activated, defeat 100 enemies with it.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPivvK4=.jpg Cleansing Fire- 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Finish off Glyrin and Hestrine using action skills.

The final blow to kill each of these bosses must be done with any action skill. Equip an action skill in the menu before loading into the mission. Then reduce the boss's health down as low as possible. This is necessary because most action skills are very weak and do not do much damage. Then activate your action skill by pressing the circular button near the middle, left edge of the screen. The circle contains your willpower and show a number representing how many times you can use your action skill. This achievement may be easier to earn in Story Mode (Missions 1 and 2) because you will have more time to build up willpower for using your action skill. If you load up a Mission Mode boss level, you will get only one use of your action skill. As long as your are careful and wear their health down extremely low, it shouldn't really matter. Immediately after killing the second of these bosses with an action skill, the achievement will unlock.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPzW3Xo=.jpg Dragon Master- 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Defeat Dark Phantom 200 times.

Dark Phantom is the final boss in the game and can defeated in both Mission and Story Mode levels. This will take a significant amount of time. If you can somehow manage to defeat him in only 3 minutes, which is quite unlikely, this achievement alone would take 10 hours. This achievement should be saved for last, after unlocking all skills.

MISCELLANEOUS ACHIEVEMENTS (3 for 40 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 3 achievements are earned by completing miscellaneous tasks.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UPtddJQ=.jpg Hero of Draco - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Complete "Battle after battle after battle!" without taking any damage.

You need to complete the entire "Battle after battle after battle!" mission without taking any damage. This level does not unlock until you complete the first 21 levels in Mission Mode. You need to beat the five bosses in a row on true difficulty without taking any damage. See THIS post by Zebrasqual for a mini-guide to unlocking this achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UP0+bks=.jpg Illumination - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Customize your dragon's color.

This is a simple achievement. All you need to do it is click "Color Change" on the menu before loading into a mission (the one where you equip skills). Sometimes the option may not appear. If that is the case, just tap on your animated Dragon and the option should appear.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2471/UP02Jek=.jpg GPS Specialist - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Use the in-game GPS to collect 50 jewels.

The game has a feature which allows you to earn jewels based on the distance you travel in the real world between play sessions. You need to travel a total of 1200 km (1,200,000 meters) to earn 50 jewels. The game automatically check you in when you boot up the game. If you are playing on-the-go, you can check in manually from the Main Menu. Click Play Game > Trading Post > Acquire via GPS > Check In. The game will then add the distance since your last check-in to your total, which you can see after checking-in each time. You can also see how many jewels you have earned via GPS from this screen.

NOTE: The GPS check-in was previously glitched, but has been patched as of October 14, 2012. It is now accurate and fully functional. The game should also recalculate all of your previous check-ins before the patch and add them all to your total.

GUIDE UPDATES:

9/15/12 - Guide created and mostly complete. Still needs more information in places.

9/16/12 - Added more information to the "Hero of Draco" achievement and a link to Zerbrasqual's mini-gudie for it. Added a warning about the glitch that deletes all game progress to the Roadmap.

9/17/12 - Updated the achievement difficulty from 6/10 to 7/10. May need to be increased further, depending on feedback I receive. Added the phrase "depending on skill" to the completion time, as this game could be completed fairly quickly if you were phenomenal at the game, or it could take ages if you are not that good. Also updated the description for "The Ultimate Test" achievement.

9/25/12 - Updated "GPS Specialist" with what is believed to be the current distance requirement. Also added information about a possible forthcoming update and about the save game glitch.

10/5/12 - Added a link to the WPCentral review to the Roadmap.

10/16/12 - Added information about the patch released on 10/14/12 which fixed the glitchy GPS and supposedly resolved the save game disappearing issue.

11/28/12 - Changed the Roadmap to reflect the game not being available on Windows Phone 8.

12/12/12 - Removed the warning in the Roadmap about all progress being wiped. This issue has been patched and is a thing of the past.

12/26/12 - Now reavailable on WP8. Added to Roadmap.

1/6/13 - Edited the entire guide to reflect the recent patch which destroyed the glitch in the game to earn jewels. Now you basically have to purchase microsoft points or be a very frequent flyer to complete this game.

3/27/14 - Updated the guide to reflect the recent decommission of Microsoft points. You can no longer spend money to avoid the tedious grind. Also updated the Roadmap and "White Reaver Unleashed" achievement to reflect some tips from Shadow Kisarugi about how to best grind jewels. Based on this info, lowered the completion time from 1500+ hours to 500+ hours. With some confirmation on these details, I will soon resubmit these edits to the published guide.

I don't think he was rude, and you are spamming your question everywhere (disclaimer: not being rude, it is what it is!). May I suggest creating a thread for that question ?

Regarding the guide, I'm not sure if I agree with the 6/10 on difficulty, there are some tough goals to achieve, like "scoring 750000 on air of despair 2 with lightning roar"

I personally have not come near completing the game yet, so 6/10 really is just a place holder. What would you suggest?

Sure I admit I have asked the question a few times, but I have got no answer. This is my final skill to unlock and I am racing to get a solution before my save gets erased like ppl have had happen.

I am sorry if I somehow came off as rude. That was not my intention. I personally find question spammers annoying, but since you are new to the forums it is understandable. Your post in this thread was the third time I saw your question. Simply making a thread in the games forum would have been enough. Trust me, if anyone can offer advice to you they would. No one is ignoring you. Folks around here are always willing to help!

I'm having major issues with a lot of scores right now, was hoping the score booster would be helpful, but they're barely making any difference.

Maybe I just need to get well over 90% kills, not the 75-80% that im getting.

Never been good at scoring on these damn games :(

Interesting. Upped the difficulty to 7 from 6. Let me know what you think.

those 25/27 millions challenge are really easy. if i remember correctly, u only fight bosses. when u fight the spider boss, dont kill him !!! only "kill" the little pink bubbles that he shoot. i got my combo going up to x1000. running out of time will make ur score going down BUT u get too much points with the combo so the score is still going up. wait for it to be 25/27 million and u can finish the challenge without worrying about making combos for big score anymore. i hope i was clear enough ^_^

Hey I can confirm the distance for gps specialist is 1200000m I found that I had to be in game for it to record my distance.

Thanks for confirmation. I didnt personally get myself, but have been relying on the word of mouth of others. I added some more clarity to that achievement.

sadly i got no way to make the two 10 million tours, the best score never get any close to 8 million, combos are always interrupter by the big dragons.

And somehow i was confused how to maintain the combos, trying to memorize where each wave come from?

how do you guys maintain good combos to get 10 million? sorry for my poor english and post the question here.

Whoa, I've Just completed the 2 missions the two 10 millions tour.. You should try to keep all of the combos, especially those of the third and fourth level. Don't worry if you die, the combo can be maintained (if you are fast) during the respawn. Try to remember where the waves comes from and manatian the combo especially between two worlds.

At the end of the mission (Tour at the true difficulty), when I kept all possible combos, my final score was 11,5 M, without arkus. So, if you lost one combo (but only one) in the first or second world, maybe you can still do it eventually using 3 Points arlus at the end of a mission.

Hope it helps.. And sorry for my English :(

Here's my personal takedown method for grinding Dark Phantom kills. I'm doing this on Version 1.1 since I like not paying money for jewels and making the 5G grindfest also count toward the awakened skills achievement.

Main Skill: Plasma Ray

Sub Skill: Anima Bullet ++ (every kill grants bonus Willpower)

Action Skill: Lunatix ++ (increases attack for 2 Willpower and 2HP)

(Lunatix++ is supposed to only cost 1 Willpower and some HP, but on 1.1 at least it takes 2 Willpower instead, but the boost is still greater than Angriff Adler ++.)

Select Story Mode, World 5. As soon as the cutscene begins hit the Fast Forward button. I pick World 5 because on 1.1 I'm still getting fifteen jewels a pop. Also on Air of Despair you only begin with one health.

Once the stage starts and you see Dark Phantom's health bar fill, switch on Anima Bullet ++ and kill some of the Vespins that swarm you. You don't need to hit that many, just enough to get your Willpower up to 2.

Once the Dark Phantom shows up and does his thing, activate Lunatix ++ the moment he becomes vulnerable and give him the good ol' Plasma Ray spam.

When you've learned his flight path and got it down pat you will be able to do some ridiculous damage to him in this phase.

Don't worry so much about getting hit, just concentrate on Dark Phantom because he'll go down before you do. If you're flawless you can actually take him down during this phase but you probably won't.

For his next phase where he fires his large beams I like to fly from the extreme bottom to the extreme top and vice versa, meaning my lasers can still hit him rather than be absorbed by the beam.

He'll either do two beams before his ball and shield attack and final attack, or you might get lucky and he'll do three beams before being forced right into the final attack. Whatever happens, just keep tapping that screen!

Once the battle's over mash your way through the results screens, then once the cutscene begins hit the BACK button on your phone. This will return you to the skills menu, skipping the cutscene and credits entirely!

And there you have it, the fastest I have ever defeated him this way is with 244 remaining on the clock if I beat him during his first phase, but I usually get 237-241. If anyone's got a faster method I would love to hear it.

EDIT: Even in its glitched state Lunatix ++ is still the better skill.

something strange I've found, and replicated, so I know it wasn't a glitch at that time:

the GPS calculation for distance is fairly rough, and at certain points it makes WILD differences in distance for moving small amounts, so if you're going to use the GPS Check In (and I recommend you do, unless house-bound), then regularly check it while you're travelling

there is a region on one of my journeys where travelling down a certain road will gain me 7-8km per 100m, no matter which way I'm travelling, and if I do "circuits" (going to one end, turning around, going to the other end, turning around, etc) then I can gain loads of Jewels for very little time & petrol

as an example, on Tuesday evening I drove around 15km each way, and yet on my journey (only doing one extra "circuit") I earned 6 Jewels - note that after 50 you get 2 Jewels regularly & 3 every 5 or so (I've not counted), so it was 3 Jewel updates!

I keep my WP on my dashboard and check in while I'm driving (I know the screen locations to press), so I get a check in about every 3-4 minutes ;)

I've only tested it on my normal journeys and only found this glitch in one location (near Orpington, just SE of London), but I'm sure it happens elsewhere

I hope this helps some of you, because getting the "purchase all" cheeive will be PAINFUL otherwise (or expensive for a WP game)

Yeah i have noticed this as well. Not this exactly. but a glitch that I know others on ATT in US have in general. Occasionally our GPS will random get locked onto a small town in Maryland. It messed up a lot of thing in the phone, but is good for the game. When I see it is glitched to maryland (happens semi frequently. I notice once a week or so for a brief time) I check in. It give me like 3000km (I live in western USA). Then when it switched back to normal you can check in again for another 3000km.

Cant say this would also happen for anyone. Your method is good, but remember you need around 90,000 km for the 3,200 jewels you need to power up all the skills. I have also had many glitches just acitivating it in my home ()because I have poor GPS signal through all the walls) that is gives me KM at a time.

I like your method. I just dont think it warrant adding to the guide. If anyone comes here it will be useful. Cheers for sharing mate!

I have also had many glitches just acitivating it in my home (because I have poor GPS signal through all the walls) that is gives me KM at a time.
I regularly do the GPS in-doors - I'm currently in France (at the in-laws), so gained lots from the journey, but am getting strange readings just from regularly checking in - after checking in twice in a row, according to the game I just moved nearly 600m (while sitting on the bed) - considering Nokia have a fantastic free satnav (Drive), I'm surprised this game is so flaky!

but remember you need around 90,000 km for the 3,200 jewels you need to power up all the skills
Don't forget that you get Jewels from beating the missions, usually about 15-20 at a time (I can't remember exact amounts), so that 90k km isn't quite right - I'm on 3 million metres (3,000 km & 178 Jewels earned) at the moment, and am "taking a break" from trying to beat the missions at S rank while playing other games, but I think it's closer to 50,000 km as you're earning 2 or 3 at a time at that level (not sure if it goes up further)

I like your method. I just dont think it warrant adding to the guide. If anyone comes here it will be useful. Cheers for sharing mate!
I find that randomly checking in during the day can do wonders, just open the game, get the updated distance & then quit (unless it's 0km), as every little helps - and I REFUSE to spend money to get the required Jewels on this game, or I'd end up spending money on every game to make them quicker, and that's a slippery slope (I'm looking at Candy Crush as a culprit)

Hey mate, would you mind making another thread in this forum describing what you have found to work good for earning these glitchy chunks of distance traveled? I would like to link that to the guide in some way. I think that would fit in best. Just let me know. I havent played around with it enough (as i know I will never complete this game) or I would do it myself. Let me know. Thanks.

Wish you guys would read the post I left in the forum here. :(

The GPS jewel counter will max out at 663 jewels.

Also, as a quick guide as to how the GPS works, it will attempt to use an approximation of how far you've travelled based on wireless tower locations, which is why you'll see the spotty nature of your distance in certain areas. If it can't approximate your location, it'll use a more exacting method. Try it in areas with weaker cell signal or high interference and you'll see what I mean. I think you can tell which method it's using based on the color - white's approximation, blue's the more exact method. Also, you can use your phone's GPS to target your location and then scan and it'll use the data collected off the previous GPS, so it's possible to spoof your GPS location as Arsenic mentioned with the city in Maryland.

...but, that's all incidental as 663 is the max for the jewel counter. Take it from someone that has over 10,000,000m traveled. Also, you're awarded the extra 3rd jewel every 10 milestones.

Think the amount you need from starting with v1.2 is $25 worth of jewels. I needed $20 with some of the carryover from v1.1.
