Crimson DLC Free until December 18th.

I like the way they called it the "14 day trial" and it's like 8 days, lol.

I think the '14 day - buy and play' is their way of saying November 6th (release) - 20th. The people who played before the 20th received a specialization code and, as far as I know, the code is needed to get the access to the 'free' maps. (At least I couldn't download the map pack for free until I entered my code.)

Ahh that makes sense, a nice member passed me a specialisation code so I'll try later and see because I wouldn't mind playing them but not for 800.

:woop:

haha the well publicized 'DLC Play Then Buy' scheme (;) that they invented the day they found out they'd made a boob). oddly though it would have been a very good idea, and the maps really hold up to the ones in the retail.

Anyone who can find anything dated before the 10th that mentions this scheme please please link it... as it clearly seems a quick fix for a mistake they made giving the map free to those who had Early Unlock Spec Codes.

Glad it will get more attentions to the crimson maps, because they're lots of fun.

Can someone explain how or where it's free?

I've just looked via the in-game marketplace and the dashboard one via the links, and all say 800MSP. Last time I checked the date was the 12th...

Like was mentioned above, you need to have the specialization code that emailed to anyone who played before Nov 20th and didn't get the season pass or LE.

I don't have any codes and I got it for free. Maybe I'll get to keep it, though chances are I'll hardly even play it.

I've never been emailed a code. I had the game 2 days before release and played it that day and obviously before the 20th. The game was also the standard edition and I have no brought the pass...

There isn't a way for them to reset the achievements, right?

No.

For those saying this is a cover-up...I'm not so sure. The fact that they can even remove access to the content means that they've got to have multiple "versions" of the map pack; one "full" version available on the marketplace for purchase (also what the Season Pass will access), and one "trial" that is only available to those with a code that they are able to block. If it was a legitimate blunder, there would only be one version of the map pack and they would have no way to block access to those that got it for free.

Not a bad marketing endeavor.

This is the worst marketing endeavor. 2 Days after people downloaded the DLC for free they come out with a statement. Shitty marketing right there. If it was a trial it would have been I don't know... advertised before day 1.

Every other trial states trial when you download it. Even when you download the trial arcade game you have to download the whole game. Then when you purchase it they unlock the licensing on their end. How hard would it be to lock that licensing back up?

When has there ever been a trial that gave you achievements? Sure some trials and downloads stored the memory and once I purchased the item the achievements unlocked.

Seriously though, why would Microsoft and 343i have a super secret trial for a dlc that gives out achievements for free? Why would there be no advertising for this event? I knew about the 2 week period to play to get specializations. Yet they left out the free trial DLC aspect as a hidden reward? If that is the case it is the worst marketing ever.. but for a different reason.

I purchased the LE. I would have rather been compensated on the first DLC for season two instead. Taking away something from customers of their game because of an error on MS's end is not a smart business move. 343 is under scrutiny because they are not Bungie. People will be critical of everything they do. Going along with this "marketing" will do nothing but hurt them.

I am personally insulted that MS believes I will believe their bullshit. Honestly at this point I would have rather heard that my LE wasn't worth the money I purchased it for, instead of treating me like I am mentally inferior.

The fact that the person spinning this situation is BSAngel is priceless however. Only way it could have been better would have been if the name was IBDevious.

Doubt it's marketing. You know how stingy Microsoft is when it comes to DLC and achievements.

Also someone tweeted XBL support soon after the maps went up asking if they would get banned and they replied saying if you can get them, they're yours.

I can think of several free DLCs from Microsoft that also have achievements.

Support isn't always in the know about everything, especially if there's as much background work as this would have required. They have been asked about stuff that's accidentally been free before, and in those instances it was yours if you could get it, so support could have just assumed it applied to this as well.

They can't just remove access to content for only very specific people on a whim, it just doesn't work that way. They had to have something in place beforehand to make it possible.

I didn't see it specified anywhere, but does this "trial" allow you to still get achievements for said DLC? Because that by itself would indicate (if it wasn't already enough) that this is just some half-assed attempt to cover face.

This is definitely a cover up! If it was a legit 'Try and Play' thing, announcements would have been all over the Internet. Having information about it show up days after the release of the DLC is giving some bullshit response as to what happened. Anybody intelligent can see that this is not a marketing ploy and a 'Oops! We fucked up again!' excuse.
