Introduction:

Marlow Briggs is a brutal action game that draws reference from the likes of God of War and Darksiders, and tasks you with cutting up hordes of various enemies as you fight to save your girlfriend. A majority of the achievements are straight forward, either story related or combat based, and you will get one achievement for a completion of the game and then completing the unlocked difficulty. The trickiest achievement will come with collecting every single collectible in a single playthrough of the game.

Playthrough 1 [Hard Recommended]:

For your first playthrough you might as well go through on Hard to get a better feel for the game before jumping into Hardcore, and I also recommend trying to grab as many of the collectibles as you can find to possibly save you from focusing on those in your next playthrough. A good portion of your achievements are story related, whether for reaching certain parts (such as the mine cart ride for Train Ride) or beating any of the bosses in the game. You will also need to use your leveled up skill points to upgrade something once for Leveling Up, which will come naturally as the game can be quite difficult without them, and you will need the upgrades to get your other achievements. The remainder of the achievements are the two game completion achievements (you will get There Can Be Only One for completing anything below Hardcore), and a good amount of kill achievements, such as reaching a combo of 50 for Gotta Love Gore or killing an enemy with an air combo for Danger Above. By the end of the game, depending on your time spent grabbing collectibles, you should have all but three or so achievements - Collector for grabbing all collectibles in one playthrough, Skip Master for skipping all of the cutscenes, and The Chosen One for beating the game on Hardcore. During the post game credits, be sure to complete the mini-game to watch the entire credits, and get Patience.

Playthrough 2 [Hardcore, Skip Cutscenes]:

By now, hopefully you have a good grasp of the combat to deal with this rather tricky difficulty, while keeping an eye out for the collectibles for The Chosen One. You will also want to make sure you skip the cutscenes, now that you hopefully know what's going on in the game, which will give you Skip Master. While not having to focus on individual kill achievements is nice, you want to stay focused on the game so you do not miss any collectibles, which will force a complete 3rd run through of the game if you reach a checkpoint after the collectible. So, in a sense, the hardest part of Hardcore is keeping an eye out for collectibles.

Achievement Guide:

Defeat the Fire boss

The Fire Boss appears very early in the game (end of the trial) where you are on a mine cart shooting at a large excavation machine. Shoot the two turbines, one on either side of the machine, then you'll get grabbed and you must shoot the final turbine. This will be followed by a brief on foot battle, then you must grab onto a chain to reach the guy controlling the excavator, who you will then eviscerate for an achievement.

Survive train-cart ride

In the latter half of the second area of the game, you will jump on a mine cart which will activate a sort of mini-game where you must use :ls: to roll between the three mine carts to avoid hitting any low-hanging objects. There are also some experience point pickups you can get along the way, but simply completing the mini-game will get you the achievement.

Solve the water puzzle

During the third area of the game - the water temple area - you will need to do a short box-moving puzzle to flood the area in the center of the temple with water so you can reach the far side. Basically - climb the left side of the area, step on the glowing button on the ground to open a waterway and flatten out the nearby stairs so you can slide the nearby box up to an elevator on the left as you come up the walkway. Leave the box there (you will use the elevator to raise the box up) and climb the nearby vines, continue up the next set of vines and kill the maggot enemies to continue over the stone pillars on your left to reach a rotating lever mechanism to raise the elevator with the box. Note: You can move this box to the far right of this area to reach a collectibles for the Collector achievement, and then you can slide it to the leftish of the elevator to reach a ledge to grab onto. Once you grab onto the ledge and activate a switch across the nearby gap, the achievement will unlock.

Note that there are a ton of tiny alcoves in this area with XP masks, so make sure to grab those for bonus experience.

Gain entry to treasure room

After proceeding through the cave systems into another temple you'll need to bypass some giant flaming balls, only to enter another room full of traps. Once you enter this massive room full of swinging blades, the achievement will unlock.

Defeat the Water boss

This boss will round out the city of the dead area and overall he is about as straightforward as the first boss, since all you need to do is chop at his tentacles, then do some button prompt action to hack out his eye to receive Chaac's Freezing Wrath, and this achievement.

Solve the temple puzzle

Once you reach the exterior of the snow temple you will need to quickly run around the central mechanism and step on the glowing floor tiles before they reset, using the grapple hooks (:bbut:) to speed things up. Once the box in the center is lowered down to your level, the achievement will unlock. Easiest puzzle ever.

Fly across the chasm

At the end of The Rainforest City (shortly after the collectible) you will need to glide across more stone pillars, but these ones collapse after you stand on them for a few seconds. You'll also notice some fireflies attacking some machine gunners at the far end of the canyon, which is your destination. Once you land where the enemies once were, the achievement will unlock.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-8T5d8=.jpg Blown Away 15:gsicon:

Defeat the Air boss

The Air Boss is a big dragon that you need to fight at the end of yet another temple, which happens to also be full of flaming balls like the previous temples. For the first phase of this fight, use your :bbut: grapple hook to jump up and grab the chain hanging above the middle of the platform your on to avoid the dragon's tornado breath until he chomps down on the platform, allowing you to whack him. To speed things up, I highly recommend unloading on him with your Spirit Knives when he is not chomping down in melee range as well, because they do great damage against him and it will speed things up a bit. In phase 2, use Patan's Tusk to smack the boss in the face to push him back into the flaming balls behind him. You can keep :xbut: smacking him until he rears back, which will be followed by him either using his tornado breath, or doing a powerful ground slam attack that will also move him away from the flaming balls a bit. Rolling back to avoid this and hitting him when he is not attacking you will make quick work of him.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-0y7Go=.jpg Down Boy 15:gsicon:

Defeat HellHound

Near the end of the Dark Jungle segment of the game you will need to spin some mechanisms and pull some switches to open a door on the far side of a large room that currently has huge spikes blocking the path. Once you finish the minor puzzle to open the door, an elevator on the lower level will reveal a hellbeast that has the most of your powers. He isn't overly difficult, so long as you watch for his icy charge attack, his flamethrower attack (most important), and his version of strength of Cabrakan. Waste whatever mana you have left on Spirit Knives, or your favorite spell, and whack away with Patan's Tusk.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/+PMaCg==.jpg There Can Be Only One 20:gsicon:

Complete the game on any difficulty

Complete the game... on any difficulty. At the start of the game you can swap difficulties via the pause menu to make the game easier or harder, but you will not be able to play on Hardcore yet, which is unlocked after beating the game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-l4tKI=.jpg Leveling Up 10:gsicon:

Earn upgrade point and spend it

You will first be able to level up a skill after successfully completing the anti-aircraft vs. helicopter challenge sequence near the beginning of the game. The upgrade menu can be opened by pressing :back: and your first upgrade can be 1000 experience points spend on Kukulkan's Fangs (the only available upgrade at the moment).

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5--9S1U=.jpg The Chosen One 25:gsicon:

Complete the game on Hardcore difficulty

Note that this is NOT Hard, Hardcore will unlock after beating the game once, and sadly there is no New Game +.

You might as well play through the first time on Hard to really familiarize yourself with the game. There are certainly some difficult fights in this game, but overall you'll probably come to realize that most of your deaths stem missing jumps and getting mowed down by flaming boulders. That aside, be aware that Chaac's Freezing Wrath is probably your best choice for magic, although spirit knives are usually your best use of mana (with some exceptions, depending on the enemy). As for the primary weapons, I found all but the forsaken sting to be at least good, with the Forsaken Stings :ybut: being it's only redeeming quality due to it's good damage and very long range, otherwise the weapon does well below decent damage. For general enemies, the Bloodthirsty Claws are fantastic for weaving in and out of combat while dealing good damage, but once you unlock and upgrade Patan's Tusk, spamming the heavy :ybut: chains will stunlock pretty much every enemy in the game, including groups, so you will want to use that almost exclusively once you get it outside of the boss fights.

For the final boss, you will want to clear out the first few enemies with the Bloodthirsty Claws, using the meteors to damage them to help you out, and avoiding damage at all costs as you will not recover prior to fighting the boss. Once you start fighting with long, stick with the Claws and use 5-6 attack :xbut::ybut: combos to quickly move in and out of his melee range, while you dodge/jump around to avoid his various attacks - all of which do a ton of damage. Phase 3: guess what, you're unarmed! Thankfully, your :ybut: 3 hit combo is pretty powerful, albeit slow and with very little range, however Long's attacks are now confined to just his sword-based moves, allowing you to capitalize on hitting him as he recovers from a combo attack. Be sure to do the 2 :bbut: prompts around 50% and 20% to finish the beast off.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-bcU2w==.jpg Mind over Matter 15:gsicon:

Kill enemy with each magic

Over the course of the story you will unlock spells; Flames of Kinich Ahau, Strength of Cabrakan, Chaac's Freezing Wrath and Huracan's Winds. You must use each of these to kill an enemy at least once, by using :lbbut: and their associated :abut::bbut::xbut:or:ybut:. Depending on the difficulty and where you are in the game, you may need to upgrade them a bit to make them more effective (recommended anyway for increased mana as well), and you can unlock this after defeating Huracan and reaching the Dark Jungle.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-VHx8w==.jpg Master Of Arms 10:gsicon:

Kill enemy with each weapon

There are a total of four weapons in the game, with the final weapon - Patan's Tusk - being unlocked in the Waterwheel's cliff area. They all unlock naturally, and all you need to do is kill a single enemy with each for the achievement to unlock.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-iYTDE=.jpg Personal Touch 10:gsicon:

Execute an enemy

The tutorial for this made the mechanic kind of confusing, as it states pressing :bbut: when it appears over an enemy's head (only the more difficult enemies, once they're weakened), is supposed to make you execute them. In some cases, you will instead mount large enemies and use them to beat on their smaller buddies, in other cases you can convert enemies to become allies (by tapping :bbut:), and for the small bugs you can stomp on them at any point by tapping :bbut:. The achievement seems to unlock doing any of these things.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-tZvRc=.jpg Stumbling Block 10:gsicon:

Knock enemy off ledge into their falling death

This can be achieved by knocking an enemy off of any cliff or other ledge by attacking them, knocking them off with an explosion, or using :bbut: to pick them up and :abut: to throw them off. The last weapon (the hammer-type scythe) can also pound enemies off of cliffs during the :ybut: combo.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-06p8g=.jpg Return to Sender 10:gsicon:

Kill enemy with deflected projectile

There is a tutorial for this very early in the game when you are first introduced to the Demolition Expert (rocket launcher guy), but in general you must time a block (:ltbut:) just right so you deflect the rocket back at whoever shot it at you, at least damaging - usually killing - them and people in the immediate vicinity of them.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-8brn0=.jpg Achiever 10:gsicon:

Get your first achievement

Yes, this is literally an achievement to get an achievement. It will unlock alongside whatever achievement you get first.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/5-q5RYQ=.jpg Enviromental Hazard 10:gsicon:

Kill enemy with enviromental objects (fire, barrel,...)

You can do this by throwing enemies at said objects, or by blowing them up while the enemy is near them, however I got this naturally during the tutorial for the Flames of Kinich Ahau spell, which immediately follows the Fire Boss fight.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/+RupOw==.jpg Danger Above 10:gsicon:

Kill enemy with air combo

You don't need to use an air combo per se, you simply need to kill an enemy while you're airborne. This is of course most easily done by killing one of the flying bugs. You don't need to kill the enemy in one jump, you just need to be airborne when you land the final blow.

Tacab's Bloodthirsty Claws' Red Heaven Lift (hold :ybut: then tap :ybut:) combo is pretty solid for this.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/+zqgjg==.jpg Immovable Object 10:gsicon:

Block enemy attack

This is almost guaranteed to come naturally, so long as you use :ltbut: to block enemy attacks. This can also come if you try to deflect enemy rockets and your timing is off. You won't be able to block some of the heavier attacks from bosses and heavy enemies.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/+PtRqA==.jpg Gravity Off 20:gsicon:

Launch enemy and kill it before it falls on ground

I did this by killing a guy who was launched by an environmental explosion, however most of the weapons have combos that result in enemies being launched into the air (sometimes enemies other than the one hit directly). With all of the explosions in the game, chances are you will get this naturally either way.

The best method for this weapon-wise is Tacab's Bloodthirsty Claws, and the Red Heaven Lift combo (hold :ybut: then tap :ybut:).

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-FfsSA==.jpg Dead Eye 20:gsicon:

Destroy 10 enemies using only spirit knives

Almost immediately after you enter the jungle you will learn the spirit knives ability (:ltbut:) use only these to kill all of the bugs that appear. Most of them are out of melee range anyway, and are killed in 1-2 knives. If you're having trouble getting this, there is an area near the very end of the game full of worms at ground level that you can knife easily without getting hit in return.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-Vm6UQ==.jpg Glider 20:gsicon:

Glide for more than 6 seconds

Within a minute or two of unlocking your wings in Rainforest City you'll need to clear a big gap over a waterfall using them. Jump off the cliff and hold :abut:, but instead of going straight across, just fly in a large circle in the middle of the gap. The achievement should unlock just as you die from the fall.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-3D4Rg==.jpg Gotta Love Gore 10:gsicon:

Perform a 50-hit combo

You can get this naturally if you're smart during combat and you use a mixture of constant attacking, and throwing knives (:rtbut:) to raise your combo, which appears at the right side of the screen. This can be done with any of the weapons, with some being easier than others, but in my opinion, the easiest method is to find a group of about 5 enemies and simply use the Flames of Kinich Ahau magic (:lbbut: and :bbut:) to blow them all up with fireballs, and then you can quickly combo them if needed.

As the little bug enemies become more frequent, this achievement will become considerably easier. This is especially true once you unlock the long-chain flail (Forsaken Sting).

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-LlCwg==.jpg Skip Master 20:gsicon:

Skip all cutscenes in one play through

Hold :abut: during cutscenes to skip through them. Pretty much whenever you lose control of your character, start holding :abut:. I even did this for Eva's notes, though I wouldn't consider those cutscenes. The achievement will pop once you skip the final boss introduction and enter the Inner Sanctum. Congratulations, you still have no idea what the game is about!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-phLdw==.jpg Patience 15:gsicon:

Watch all credits

From the main menu scroll down to Help & Options, then Credits to play the Credits mini-game. Here you must use :ltbut: and :rtbut: and the :ls: to move your way up the tunnel while gathering all of the blue relics, and avoiding the credits, which conveniently get longer to make your life more difficult. It's not the most entertaining game, but it's a lot better than spending an hour watching actual credits.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2760/-LEJYA==.jpg Collector 25:gsicon:

Find all collectibles in one play through

The collectibles are blue mask/orb-like items that can be picked up by tapping :bbut: and are found hidden in a number of levels. You will need to get every single one in a single playthrough for this achievement, which means if you reload an older save to find one you missed, you will need to complete the game from that point.
