Language Filter

Had a quick glimpse through the 'already suggested' thread and couldn't find anything like this although if it is there, pass me the dunce hat and send me to the naughty corner.

Not sure if this is possible, but it may as well be thrown out there.

So, this suggestion comes at you in 2 ways:

  • Manual language filter - This would be individual to each member of this site. Any naughty words that our members (or members' parents!) don't wanna see, stick it in the language filter. Now whenever a naughty word is used in the forums it will come up as whatever it is filtered as (**** for example) just for that user.

  • Automatic language filter - This is compiled by the admins (so they decide what words they deem fit to be in the language filter) and can be 'switched on' by any user. Plus it could be used in a way so anyone who signs up and is under the age of 18 (or 16 or 15 or whatever) it is automatically activated and cannot be deactivated.

Feedback please, both good and bad. Is this a heavenly idea, or does it blow and you want to beat to death with a stick? Hit me. :)

EDIT: It's just occurred to me that I've not fully looked through all the User CP options etc. If it's already there, feel free to e-slap me. And maybe delete this thread to save me from embarrassment...

I would be tempted to access the site filter and put in all the common words that people get wrong: ur, tym, thier, etc...

It might make the posts quite a bit more amusing, actually...but unfortunately the extra server load would probably not be worth the benefit, especially the user-level one that you suggest. Not a bad suggestion, but 99+% of the users do just fine, and it isn't really worth bogging the system down for that other portion of a percent.

Yeah, I understand dude. No point in an implementation if it ain't gonna be made good use of.

On the otherhand, THINK OF THE CHILDREN! :p

Why does this site allowed swearing in posts?

I don't want my Nephew to view this board with swear words.

That is your choice. Most of the world doesn't suffer from America's obsession, and we are a global site. Out of curiosity, do you not permit your nephew to listen to the radio or watch television? There is no more swearing here than either of those venues.

Radio actually has extremely strict rules about what words you can say. Ever since the superbowl wardrobe malfunction mishap. I would assume that the same rules apply to television. Obviously this does not apply to satellite and internet radio as well as premium cable stations.

In theory, the same rules apply to both. In reality, radio is more strict than television, but still permits words such as "bitch, goddamn, hell, shit, dick, whore, crap" etc., at least in the Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Diego markets. I am not familiar with other markets, personally. Wandering from the topic slightly, but for those in the US, this is the relevant portion of the FCC guidelines...note that this does not apply to internet sites, especially ones owned by Finns. :)

Obscene Broadcasts Are Prohibited at All Times

Obscene material is not protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution and cannot be broadcast at any time. The Supreme Court has established that, to be obscene, material must meet a three-pronged test:

  • An average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;
  • The material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and
  • The material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

Indecent Broadcast Restrictions

The FCC has defined broadcast indecency as “language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities.” Indecent programming contains patently offensive sexual or excretory material that does not rise to the level of obscenity.

The courts have held that indecent material is protected by the First Amendment and cannot be banned entirely. It may, however, be restricted in order to avoid its broadcast during times of the day when there is a reasonable risk that children may be in the audience.

Consistent with a federal indecency statute and federal court decisions interpreting the statute, the Commission adopted a rule that broadcasts -- both on television and radio -- that fit within the indecency definition and that are aired between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. are prohibited and subject to indecency enforcement action.

Profane Broadcast Restrictions

The FCC has defined profanity as “including language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance.”

Like indecency, profane speech is prohibited on broadcast radio and television between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

If I swear only once will I get an warning?

Short answer.....no. Because on this site they are very liberal in what you can write, as long as you don't use any 4-letter word profusely or refer to a particular race of people, gender, or sexual orientation in a garbage/construction man type of way. In other words, don't be racist or insulting to folks and don't say F*** You and I wouldn't see a problem. But I'm only answering this as someone who has read similar questions in the FAQ section concerning language. Have a nice day.

In general the user based controls for swear words would be quite complex and may take a while to setup on the site depending on what files you need to edit as well as creating an addition to the user control panel.

The coding for a full board censorship is there but obviously not setup. I think the admins decided against it as most people are quite liberal, if you go a little over the top swearing the mods may send a few messages.

As for tv and radio, radio is covered by quite strict rules but british tv has such loose laws on what they show on tv. I have seen a heard things some people in the states may write a monster letter of complaint over ;).

sorry for the off topic, but reading this made a little question in my head

on british TV, we really have no laws after watershed (9pm) (for yanks thats the time they could legally show porn on tv) anyway, so we have full frontal nudity, swearing, racism its all rather nice and colourfull

the question, why do americans, yanks, septic tanks, all the good ol words for our cousins over the sea's have against swearing? as a scottish git, i do tend to delve into the the 'colourful' area of speech, mix in being a ex-squadie (militry) and you really have a swear box.

so - why do americans have a obsession with no swearing?

thank you in advance.

The laws are very different over here, i'm not American, i am from the UK but I do live in Texas. From what I have seen it's just to protect the younger generations from being foul mouthed, rude and the TV laws here in general are just far stricter. I do remember when British TV was the same but slowly over the past few years since 2001 the laws have been changed and more foul or uncensored things have been showing up.

I guess America just isn't ready for the freedom of speach and right to excercise the use of the law on TV. I find people here seem like they get offended quite easy if you say the wrong thing.

Most of the people I know couldn't care less but there is a very large part of America that would be very upset with some of the stuff we don't find offensive. Personally I don't care if you censor something, it does get annoying when you have someone like gordon ramsey on tv and they even censor out words like "god", "damn", "crap" etc but you get used to it, it's not hard to work out what peoples are saying it's just a little irritating hearing a loud BBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEP over everything :).

Out of what you said though I would rather hear the work yank censored, I just can't stand it, it's slowly becomeing a borderline racist comment from how I have seen people using it.

sorry if yank offends you mate, i use it like people use brit or scott.

my god, i wouldnt be able to stand watching ramsey with it bleeping everything second word. but censering words like crap, and god. i can remeber being able to say them to school. haha.

well the not having youth being foul mouthed didnt work very well, try playing cod5 in gamechat with american kids when they hear a accent thats not american. they swear just as much as brits execpt they dont really know 'how to use swear words'.

maybe one day america will get a bleep free TV. :)

thanks for the quick answer though mate!

No problem, im not really offended by the word yank it just sounds horrid, and most people I have spoken to use it as an insult, i guess it's just showing their true feelings of disgust for another race on the planet. There is no need for racism.

You can get uncensored TV here, like HBO and a few other channels but you need to pay for them, which is just annoying. You also need cable. From what I have seen on HBO there not scared to show whatever they want in the middle of the day.

I studied a lot of media a few years ago so I found out why censorship was a big issue for some people. Turns out swearing is so commonly used in the UK they just don't care so much about it on TV anymore as it's become de-censortized though the masses. The more common it becomes the less it's offensive. Then again in most countrys you won't find people who are influenced by stupid things to go shoot up a school.
