RAIDERJUNKIE
Hey guys, so like the title says I've never played Gears of War, I know, shocking right? After seeing some Gears 3 gameplay, it looks incredible. So I was wondering if I should start at the beginning of the series with one, or if I should just jump right in with number 3? Do each of the sequels follow the same story line, or are they kind of like a Call of Duty game, where the stories are pretty much independent from each other? Basically if I start with 3 will I have no idea what is going on in the story? Also, is the multiplayer still active and fun to play on the first? I would appreciate any feedback you guys have, thanks!
GINN1990
hey i'm pretty sure the story line does follow on through out so starting at 1 would probly be your best bet. i've just started playing gears 1 myself and it is definately worth a play and the online is still active but difficult lol. Tussell
I would definitely recommend going through all of them. The first game is the best, followed by the third, then finally the third. There is an option to see what happened previously in Gears in Gears of War 3, but it's much, so I would certainly say go through one and two first. bblcreator8790
I recommend getting all of them since the first two are really cheap now and they're still top notch games. You might as well experience the full story from the beginning.
RAIDERJUNKIE
Awesome, thanks for the input guys! I'm gonna get the "triple pack" or whatever it is, with gears one, two, and an add on I think?

megahurt5
I highly recommend playing them from the beginning. They're not huge time sinks (4-6 hours per game) and the story all ties together from beginning to end. I have yet to play 3 though, so with that said it's not entirely necessary to do so but very much worth it. I just went with the triple pack myself and played through 1 for the 5th time, working on #2 for the third time now just to refresh myself and get back up to speed for #3. Carmona
You would be making the worst mistake in your life (even more so then when you thought it was cool to wear zebra pants and cut your hair in a mullet) if you skipped straight to GOW3. You can buy 1 and 2 for under $10 each. Get them and enjoy the campaigns. They are awesome. I would definitely recommend going through all of them. The first game is the best, followed by the third, then finally the third. I totally agree....the third one was WAAAY better then the third one.

SinBegins03
I have the Gears of War triple pack and it is well worth the money - get it and start playing! lol I picked up gears 3 (not really far in the campaign yet) and after watching the video that sums up Gears 1 and 2 I concluded it wasn't very good - play the games yourself. megahurt5
.... After playing 1-2 again, I have to say.. Gears of War 1 is an amazing game full of fond memories, and maybe it's because this was literally my 5th time playing through the campaign it wasn't quite as epic as I remember. The pace is awesome, the environments/maps are amazing, the enemies and difficulty are just right. But, aside from building up some chemistry between a core Delta squad (Marc/Dom/Baird/Cole) and kicking off the story (especially Dom's situation with Maria) it.... was kind of lackluster. I mean, the game is awesome but... And, I'm doing this in quickreply and still unfamiliar with spoiler tags here but.. I didn't feel like Carmine or Kim mattered in this run. Maybe it's because I saw them die 4 times before, but watching the cut scenes and dialogue fresh again after a couple of years, while playing co-op with my wife, I also noticed.... neither of us cared. Bearing in mind this was her first time playing Gears, and all she had to say was "uh ok great when can I shoot people again??" Gears of War 2 is a MUCH better model. It picks up on the previous story and truly runs with it. I just think my wife cares more about the shooting and what not than she does the story, or she missed a scene or two because the game is perfectly paced, with an added difficulty it can be played by anyone, and has it's moments both funny and ... well, veterans already know. So... I retract my previous statement and insist you play them all in sequence. Edited October 2, 2011 by megahurt5
denial9945
There all great games. But the first one has some really glitchy achievements. I hated getting some of those.
Jesuit007
I also just bought the triple pack. In GoW1, the campaign and co-op achievements are all easily obtainable, and so is the annex pack, but I recommend not getting attached to getting the stand-alone multiplayer achievements unless you have some friends ready to boost or are willing to spend a LOT of time trying to get games. GoW2 is a little better for achievements, and it's more active than 1. Still, you might have trouble getting enough consistently good groups for the public match achievements. So, definitely worth the price of admission for the experience itself, but just be aware that it IS an old game and it's damned hard to get the multiplayer achievements. softerxsin495
I would buy the first two games first, then again I'm the kind of gamer who enjoys playing games chronologically. I like to follow the story line. As some of the others have said, the game is older, so don't expect the online lobbies and what not to be full. Earning those multiplayer achievements will be harder. I just bought the Triple Pack from Kmart, and got Gears 1, Gears 2 + all Gears 2 Multiplayer map packs for $30 USD. You can get the games preowned for cheaper I'm sure, especially if you don't care much for the map packs. I have some friends who have gears 1 and gears 2, which is why I got the triple pack. If you need any boosting, I have the games and will assist you if you'd like, if you choose to purchase the games. Anyways, I'm not a huge fan of shooters to begin with, mostly an RPG kinda gal, but I really love the gears franchise.
DJK
I was wondering the same thing so I borrowed 1 from a friend. It's actually kinda difficult for me on the casual setting. I think it's from the view though, not used to an over the shoulder view. I guess they are all like this? I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. What's the best online mode to play? Play through the games in order; the story is as cool as the gameplay. Enjoy!

He-Man
Buy the gears of war triple pack first. It comes with Gears 1 and 2, plus the DLC for 2. All for $30, or even less if you can find a deal.

DecadentBeaver
I am getting this next week, after my mom bought her fella a 360 and he didn't want the free copy of Gears 1 or Halo 3. So I will finally get round to playing these games myself. Shame I don't have the internet yet. But should be in the new year. Wanna see what all the fuss is about.
