GoldenEye250
Amalur and Rise of Nations should have new owners come November. by Chris Pereira September 27, 2013 After months of waiting, the assets that once belonged to shuttered development studio 38 Studios will go up for auction in November, including the IP rights to the Kingdoms of Amalur series. The liquidation auction will last for just over a day, beginning on November 13 at 9 a.m. Eastern and running until November 14 at 12 p.m. A website has been set up outlining the assets, including technology and intellectual property rights, that will be available to the highest bidder. While only one game -- Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning -- was ever released, the Amalur franchise was designed to be much more. An MMORPG, known as Project Copernicus, was in the works (see its leaked trailer below), complete with expansive lore. The Amalur rights include the MMO, the rights to create a sequel (something which includes the work already done on Reckoning 2), and the revenue still being generated by Reckoning. Also up for sale are IP rights and in-house technology belonging to Big Huge Games, the now-defunct game developer that was owned by 38 Studios following a 2009 acquisition. Prior to developing Reckoning, it was responsible for the Rise of Nations PC strategy games and Catan for Xbox Live Arcade. The 38 Studios saga is a long one. Financial problems prompted the company to lay off its entire staff and file for bankruptcy last year. The situation was complicated by the fact that the state of Rhode Island had loaned the studio $75 million to relocate from Massachusetts. Its collapse resulted in Rhode Island taking control of 38's assets and a lawsuit being filed against the developer by Rhode Island, a case which will go to trial despite attempts to have it dismissed. As if that weren't all enough, WPRI reported this month that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the original loan. Expect to hear more about 38 Studios' assets following the auction's conclusion in November.Source: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/27/38-studios-assets-to-be-sold-in-november In addition to a sequel for this game, hopefully more DLC will be made as well. Walecs360
I feel sad for 38 Studios, but I really hope a sequel will be made. I hope they'll hire part of the original staff for the sequel.
dark_shard
I definitely enjoyed KOA, but 38 definitely made some mistakes with the game/handling their money.

Reggiez
I had a great time playing Kingdoms of Amalur but I can't see them going anywhere else with the original story. I suppose the world in itself could be used to house a lot of other quests though. If there is ever a "Kingdoms of Amalur 2" I would most definitely look into it. I really thought someone would buy the studio but maybe the franchise was deemed to risky to invest in?
Krescent
Ah, that's a shame. I enjoyed KOA and loved the combat. Was this because they had set their expectations for KOA too high? I think they needed to sell three million just to break even correct?
JURRR TRIPP
Hoping these guys get picked up, KOA one of the best game play experiences I've had on the Xbox, shame to not see anymore releases from them!
Reggiez
At the time (2014) I thought the ship had sailed for this franchise but THQ Nordic changed that in 2018 and out pretty much now is the re-mastered version. Now that we have the Re-release of Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning things might be looking up again. If I understood it correctly the remastered version will be getting added DLC and if it sells well the second game might still happen. Only problem is that by this point I have more or less forgotten everything I did in the game. All the same. Might pick this up at some point and do a replay of the whole thing.
