Demo First Impressions?

Recommended Posts

So what do you guys think of the demo. I just finished my first playthrough, and I am blown away. Demo is short, but that just means there will be surprises in the full game. The controls work nicely, the graphics are superb and live up to Gearbox's style of gaming, and just the crudeness of Duke is intact and in full force.

Also, anyone grab the sh** floating in the toilet and throw it against the wall?

It was a shame its too short. I loved every minutes of it. To me its got that old school style fps shooter which is great too. The graphics is really good. No I havnt seen a sh** floating in the toilet yet but I was kinda in a hurry, I'll have to check it out later. I also like where you can draw or rub out the letters or pictures on the whiteboard too.

Let's just say it took me about 30 minutes to leave the shower rooms. :D

I've played through it twice, first on Piece of Cake to check it out, then again on Come Get Some. To be honest, it wasn't that hard. The only thing that can get you is not being careful.

So let's sum it up:

PROS:

  • The gold pistol. 'Nuff said.
  • Gameplay is pretty solid.
  • Simplicity of the game as a whole.
  • The old style of shooters that we really miss nowadays.
  • Duke's one liners and phrases that he says.
  • The choices that you can make and the things you can do in the world.
  • Mini-puzzles here and there, like the first mine cart.
  • EGO bar recharges fairly quick, and doesn't change recharge speeds between easy and hard difficulties, although not sure if it will be different on Insane in the full game.
  • Duke-vision (or night vision) is a nice little addition.
  • If you die, the world will respawn and you can get items again (like the hidden Holoduke in the second demo level).
  • Easter eggs here and there are nice additions.

CONS:

  • I can't really complain, but the graphics, to me, are just a little bit disappointing. Although, this doesn't take away from the gameplay as much as some would think. The graphics actually have a certain uniqueness to them. However, I'm pretty sure it was the porting process that caused this, but the anti-aliasing is a bit badly done and I notice some very thin transparent lines on the screen in the first level.
  • Low frame rate at times produces a laggy game in some parts, also it lags when the game loads an area, like when you kick open the doors in the first level.
  • Aiming, especially with the Railgun scope, is a bit choppy. This could be improved easily I would imagine.
  • From the demo, it doesn't look like Insane will be accessible from the start.
  • EGO bar is sort of a cop-out to par with today's shooters. I miss the health number and finding health packs and power ups.
  • Ammo crates and such don't allow us to have the good feeling of hunting for ammo and refilling our weapons like in the older style of games.
  • The two weapon limit is retarded. If Duke can punch off heads, he should be able to carry all the guns at once. Once again, trying to par up with today's shooters.

This demo still kicks so much ass, and I love the game. The cons really don't even come close to taking over the pros. This game is definitely going to kick ass and chew bubblegum.

At the end of the day, the graphics don't really matter, it's all about the value of the gameplay.

Yes. Multiple times. I had a wall of poop by the time I got done. :D

I got the PC demo. It runs pretty well on PC; I didn't have any problems anyway. I'm going to go send the video to my TV and play again with a controller to see how I like that. I might just stick with the PC version if I get the full thing though; it's cheaper and it seems to run really well.

I can't figure out what the fuck those glasses are supposed to do though. They just made my screen too white to see anything. :(

I took these in Steam. How do they look compared to what you saw on the 360?

And yes, let it be known for all eternity that drawing really crude breasts on a whiteboard is a good plan. :D

It's like night vision. Use it in the caves. :D

The anti-aliasing is better on the PC version, judging by those shots, but I still see the thin lines. Like I said though, it's probably something to do with the porting process and the Xbox 360's capabilities.

Ah. The caves weren't really dark enough for me to feel like I needed any night vision, so I never thought of trying them there.

I also see what you mean about the thin lines. Maybe that's the film grain thing? I'll try playing again sometime with it off and see if there are still lines.

EDIT: Nope, they were still there.

Anyway, I must say I am somewhat disappointed that they went to a "go hide behind something for a few seconds while your health recharges" style of game. I was hoping for health kits to come back. Oh well.

I did just get a really funny loading screen tip telling me that picking up shit from the toilet doesn't take away any ego even though they really wanted it to. :D

Speaking of shit, I took some with me and threw it at the boss, but nothing happened. :(

Are we playing the same demo people? I didn't think much of it and generally just thought the controls and graphics were rubbish (even though graphics don't mean shit)

If you're like me, you'll need to play it a bit more than you'd expect for a demo. As soon as I started it I was a little upset and disappointed by it (graphics and such), but then I kept playing and it grew on me. I absolutely love it now.

No it won't, 'cos it's all out of gum :)

OT: I thought the demo was great, I can't wait to get my Balls of Steel Edition next Friday, it's been long enough!

Edit I got, when I put in my code it was typed wrong so I thought that was the wrong way to login.

I tried it again and got it.

I'm not overly impressed either. I was a huge duke 3d fan, back when I was 14 and we would lug our crappy 486 pc's to a mates place and use the really crappy serial port for networking, or playing multiplayer over dialup on 14.4kb modems.

The game felt like it had been reduced a bit too much in regards to toilet humor and porn. Maybe I am too old now? While the first level was awesome and took me back to the last level of duke 3d , when I got out of the 4wd the feeling of the crosshair and style just didn't feel right to me. I also kept dying about halfway through the second level and was surprised to see the pigs even shrunk doing full damage with their guns (not certain on this). Really annoying not seeing any checkpoints and then having to wait an age for the level to reload.

I think with enough playing the game will probably turn on me. While I didn't think it was bad, I turned it off after 15 minutes choosing to play Just Cause 2 without even finishing level 2 of duke. I have blown $150 on this game so hope I can adapt and am fairly sure I will. The graphics and feel of the gun reminds me of Bulletstorm (obviously) while I get a bit of a corny Serious Sam feel to the kills and executions.

edit : thought I should say I absolutely love the blur effect on screen when doing a sharp turn or trying to focus on a longer range. It seemed to really work and the sound was fantastic on my turtlebeach headphones.

For the most part, I can proudly say the Duke is finally back. The graphics were unfortunately a tad disappointing (I really thought they were at least going to be up to the quality of HL2 or DOOM 3. Than again, a wild west setting isn't the best location to show off any kind of graphical prowess and the second level seemed to be a good deal weaker in quality than the first level, so maybe that won't persist.)

The other issue I had was with aiming. It would seem to me that the console versions lack any sort of Auto-Aim whatsoever. While I'm never a big fan of it and never proud to admit it, but on consoles a small dash of Auto-Aim is a bit of a necessity and would be highly welcomed. The bigger enemies I didn't have much problem with, but the bugs in the caves gave me a lot of trouble. Either add some auto-aim or they better throw a lot of rocket ammo at you like DN3D.

Otherwise I love it. Familiar weapons and enemies, but new weapons and enemies that feel like they've always been here. Can't wait to see some more familiar levels with the strip clubs and city streets. Also can't wait for the monster truck levels to be a bit more open-ended. Looking forward to running that thing over (Hopefully gas isn't going to be an actual issue. I'm hoping that was just a scripted event.)

As for the art-style, it really makes me feel like I'm playing HL2 again. Quality isn't quite as sharp, but the object models are similar and the alien technology thrown around it adds to the similarity (Not sure where the above poster is getting the Serious Sam vibe yet. I'm still looking for it. Probably just better off getting Serious Sam: BFE later this year though.)

Overall I enjoyed the demo, a little short though, especially for 1.58 GB.

Some things I didn't like

Graphics were disappointing. I didn't expect them to be amazing but I did expect a little better. Won't affect my enjoyment of the game though

I also noticed some choppiness with the frame. I am assuming this is an old build so I am hoping it will be fine in the final version.

I found aiming to be tricky, even with aim assist on.

Other than those thing I enjoyed the demo. I especially liked the Activision and Half-Life references.

I noticed the lines too but is that not, *tiny SPOILER* just because you're playing a game at the start?

Seemed to vanish after that section for me.

As for the demo, I'm not that impressed tbh.

Feels extremely clunky and slow, imo.

Graphics don't really bother me, I can ignore them.

One thing that I really, really dislike that although a small thing, it bugs the Hell out of me: No iron sights. Can't stand it when FPS games do that zoom in thing where you can still see the end of the gun.

Meh, I'll still be picking it up for the sake of the Duke Nukem bust sitting on my shelf but I'll expect nothing of it now, might make it seem better, too.

I am pretty disappointed :(

I went with the second difficulty and really struggled, Maybe i should of gone with easy first, Or i was not playing the game right. But i felt it was more of a Challenge then have fun killing enemies with all these guns.

On 3D i use to mix it up use any gun i liked and just enjoyed it, With this i found myself hiding back trying not to get shot because the health bar goes down so fast, running away until it recharges, And only sticking to the serious guns and avoiding any Fun to use ones like the shrink ray as i would always end up getting killed.

Was not what i was expecting :( i'l probably play through on easy just to see if it is any funner. but so far it is very disappointing Hopefully they get some sense and release some DLC that lets you choose how the health system works and maybe add a weapon wheel, If that was done i am pretty sure that would sort out my problems with the game.

In Duke 3D Health was much the same way. You couldn't really use the fun weapons except as a last resort because they killed you so quickly. I did notice in the tip screen, however, that beating bosses and activating various environmental objects for the first time will give Duke permanent Ego boosts. Plus assuming objects carry over from level to level like DN3D, I imagine we'll already have more weapons, steroids, etc... by time we reach levels like the Wasteland. I imagine it will be easier once we get to that point.

Admittedly, though, the second level really seems like it was built for the Sniper Rifle, so I imagine the whole game won't be tipped in one weapons favor like this was.

well, i played the xboxlive arcade version, And found myself surviving for quite a while, whilst running around playing with the enemies, I guess the speed on that game also made it pretty easy to survive.

After playing the demo again on the easy mode its a little better, Although i am not sure if thats just me trying to make myself feel better about spending the £65 on balls of steel edition.

Has anyone found any secret locations yet? Or cool things u can do? I was hoping there would be loads... Although i have not found any secret locations yet :( Here are some tiny things i found you could do tho

- Pick crap up out of toilet

- Turn on sinks, use hand dryer, use soap, Turn on/off shower, Use toilets, drink from tap.

- Draw on white board

- When you start the closest and first injured ally you see has he's leg blown off, Going closer to him blood squirts all over you.

- Can of beer you can pick up and drink, Its not secret but i only found one so thought it was cool.

Anyone else found any other cool things you can do? There was not as much interaction with the environment as i thought there would be, Especially the second level. I Guess at least they have any at all :)

In the white pickup truck (second level, next to the shotgun) you can find the holoduke, wich is hellarious. Just use it, you'll know what I mean. There's also a beer on the ground there somewhere.

And on the crashed EDF ship (the one you take cover under for the dropship, next to the turret), you can shoot the red dot on the missile that is sticking out. Try it.

Oh and you can shoot the blimp during the bossfight at the first level, but it's not very spectacular if you ask me.
