Introduction:

Welcome to History Channel: Legends of War - Patton, and 2012 typical History Channel product turned decent strategy/RTS/turn-based/action oriented game. I give it all of these different titles because unlike anything before it, or at least anything the History Channel has put out, this game is completely unique in the field of gameplay. With Enigma Software Productions at the helm in this one we'll find out what makes this game tick.

The story-mode itself is completely new to the History Channel franchise. While History Channel: Great Battles - Medieval did have a turn-based aspect, Patton takes it to a whole new level. On one hand we have a very sophisticated and intricate management part of the game. You assign skills, ranks, positions--shoot just about anything and everything aside from where your army sleeps, pees, and has their fun. On the other hand we have an awesome turn-based aspect in which you are not only trying to keep your men alive, but end the battles as quickly as possible and in the most efficient way.

The game also boasts a healthy dose of multiplayer which takes missions you have completed in the story mode and allows you to play against a live opponent. Choose your soldiers, your mission, and in some aspects your opponent and enjoy truly testing your command of the Third Army.

One of the best tools for this game is the hefty instruction manual that comes with it. The manual goes into tremendously more detail than the tutorial or any in game help and really alleviates some of the painful aspects of learning a new game. Refer to it often to understand the different mission types and comparisons between units, their strengths and weaknesses.

Key Points to Remember Throughout Campaign:

  • Fuel is limited and scarce. Don't load your army/waste your prestige on a tank army you will be unable to support. You never know if the next mission will have 30 or only 0 fuel so spending all of your prestige on planes, and tanks will only cripple you.
  • Snipers and bazookas will even the odds often if you are unable to get that big technology to roll the enemy.
  • Commandos move amazing distances and have deadly accuracy and killing power. Coupled with their knife attack for stealth missions, these guys make good supplemental soldiers.
  • Air units cannot be damaged by enemies making them a strong aspect to success.
  • The max fuel any one missions has is 30 so don't plan on having the best tank equipped with a bomber and some mortars--there just isn't enough fuel for that. Plan accordingly.
  • If you don't use all of your unit's attacks in a given round be sure to set them to a field of view and a style of attack that could provide defense of not only themselves but maybe somebody who is out in the open. What do I mean? Your sniper only took one shot in round three and he has one left. Your bazooka unit is just peaking around a corner and couldn't get back behind cover. Set your sniper's view out to cover not only the bazooka unit but an area where an enemy unit could come from and do harm to your unit.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:

Story-Mode:

For the story mode may I suggest playing on the Picnic Day difficulty as the game, with regards to the main campaign, doesn't discriminate between difficulties when going for achievements. Even on the lowest difficulty, this game will prove to be quite the test for those who are not good at RTS or turn-based games similar to History Channel: Great Battles - Medieval. Your best bet is to slowly progress through each map, working your way through the enemies at a good pace making sure not to injure your soldiers too much. This truly is the one biggest contributor to not only prestige, but your ranking at the end of the mission. Keep your boys in good health, they will help you earn Heroic ratings.

There are twenty-one missions spanning four operations. Each missions while sharing similar aspects to others, has a unique background, story, and map enabling the usual stealth mission to be a new and refreshing test of your skill.

Mop Up Playthrough

If you were unable to get the 10 Heroic Victories achievement than this mop up session is for you. Your objective sadly will now be to go back and replay the campaign until you hit your 10th heroic victory. For a list of missions see "When the war is over."

Conclusion:

Well after another much needed HC game, History Channel: Legends of War - Patton raises the bar for any further games coming out through the History Channel. It was impressive, it was refreshing, and most of all it was fun coupled with replay value. By this point you should have already gone back and cleaned up some of those last few heroic victories and with that you should now be kicking back and enjoying yet another fun/challenging at times--enjoyable 1000http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif.

Tutorial completed

This should be the very first thing you do when getting the game. The tutorial is found by going to the campaign / single-player menu and then selecting it when the prompt appears.

The tutorial should take all of five minutes and gives you a very cursory introduction to the game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2405/+3GG7g==.jpgFirst blood! 10http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif

First mission completed (Campaign Mode)

First blood as detailed in the description is the very first mission you play after the tutorial. If playing on the lowest difficulty you will only encounter eleven enemies all on foot.

Tips:

-Best advise for this mission is to use cover and grenade often when possible. Grenades are your absolute best friend against these enemies and if you are sure the grenade will it, it'll kill them in one shot.

-Don't rush down the middle--the Germans have the entire thing ambushed. Flank around the outsides leaving the bulk of your troops in the middle to hold down any German advancement.

-Take your time. This first mission will help you get acclimated to the game. Patience is key, use up all of your troops movements and shoot when possible.

First bazooka recruited (Campaign Mode)

The bazooka unit is unlocked after the second mission. The earliest you can recruit a bazooka unit is after the conclusion of mission #2.

Bazooka- 8,000 Prestige. Cost decreases with a more experienced soldier being upgraded to the Bazooka. And although the price does decrease with a higher exp soldier, note that you must recruit a new unit, not simply upgrade.

First upgrade made (Campaign Mode)

This achievement can be done as early as before the second mission. I upgraded my soldier who had the most experience into a sniper and it unlocked. When looking at who to upgrade, take note at how much exp they have because the more they possess the cheaper the upgrade will be.

First tank recruited (Campaign Mode)

You unlock your first tank between missions 2 and 3 although it is quite pricey. Tanks that can be used to fulfill this achievement are the following:

M24 Chafee- 10,000 Prestige

Sherman M4A3- 20,000 Prestige

E8 Sherman M4A3- 30,000 Prestige

A-22 Churchill VII- 20,000 Prestige

50 German units destroyed (Campaign Mode)

Will come naturally during the game. Earliest level this can be achieved is Operation 1, Mission 4.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2405/5-vVnZM=.jpgBattle Hardened Recruit 30http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif

First operation completed (Campaign Mode)

The first operation consists of 2 stealth missions, 2 regular defeat the enemy missions and 1 specialty mission in which an objective must be accomplished that is different than the previous two options. Overall this first operation is where you should build a good balance between range and power without using too much prestige and injuring/losing too many soldiers. The list of Operation 1 missions is as follows:

Mission 1: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 2: Infiltration (Reach the green circle on the other side of the map)

Mission 3: Defense (Kill all units while making sure to keep your's alive)

Mission 4: Sabotage (Blow up the control points)

Mission 5: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Second operation completed (Campaign Mode)

The second operation consists of some new elements to the game and some new objectives that are sure to keep things lively and fresh. They are as follows:

Mission 6: Escort (Get the engineer to the other side of the map alive)

Mission 7: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 8: Infiltration (Destroy the artillery positions across the map)

Mission 9: Defense (Keep the engineer alive/kill all enemies)

Mission 10: Sabotage (Find and capture the enemy general on the other side of the map)

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2405/5-+Xjvk=.jpgAssassin! 40http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif

15 German soldiers killed with knife (Campaign Mode)

You unlock the Commando during Operation 2 right before the first stealth mission in that operation. There is an allied unit you get prior to this stealth mission that you can use, but the commando is the cheapest. In order to get a knife kill though you need to be close enough that the commando can attack in the number of movement pieces he has left and you will need to be able to see the knife icon when you scroll over the enemy troop. When you see this icon simply press http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/misc/a.png and watch the fireworks.

Your best bet for nailing this achievement is to use either one or two commandos during each of the stealth missions following the one in Operation 2. 15 kills will fly by. Just remember to use cover, and use that huge distance they have.

100 German units destroyed (Campaign Mode)

This will come with the natural progression of the game. The kills can only be unlocked in single player campaign mode.

First aircraft recruited (Campaign Mode)

Aircraft are fuel drainers, while at the same time are big time game changers in the field of killing off enemies from afar. These are the three available aircraft that will count for this achievement:

  • Fighter P510 Mustang - Cost 15,000 Prestige
  • Bomber B25H Mitchell - Cost 30,000 Prestige
  • Transport Douglas C47 - Cost 20,000 Prestige

Max out any of Patton's Skills (Campaign Mode)

Patton has 6 skills each with 10 levels. They are as follows:

  • Offensive Capabilities (Damage Power)
  • Defensive Capabilities (Health)
  • Tactical Capabilities (Number of shots per turn)
  • Logistics (Ammo)
  • Charisma (Prestige per mission)
  • Experience (Better starting exp for new units)

For this achievement you simply need to get one of these to level 10. I personally got offensive capabilities because of my usual camping of soldiers behind fences/rocks/buildings then popping out for a kill and going back into cover.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2405/5-9xa9E=.jpgFull army! 60http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif

Third Army completed (Campaign Mode)

Full army! achievement requires you to recruit the max number of soldiers which is 24 in campaign mode. If you wanted to simply rush this achievement you must save up at most 24,000 prestige for 24 Regulars at 1,000 prestige a pop.

Third operation completed (Campaign Mode)

List of missions for Operation 3:

Mission 11: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 12: Infiltration (Reach the allied plane on the other side of the map)

Mission 13: Defense (Hold out for 14 rounds/kill all enemies)

Mission 14: Escort (Get the medic to the other side of the map alive)

200 German units destroyed (Campaign Mode)

This final installment of the number of kill achievements should be unlocked sometime in late Operation 2. Even if you avoid a lot of the unnecessary soldiers, you should snag this well before the later half of your playthrough.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2405/5-+fxVs=.jpgWeapons Tech 80http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif

All types of units unlocked (Campaign Mode)

There are 7 different types of units to unlock. They are as follows:

  • Combat Infantry
  • Support Infantry
  • Tanks
  • Tank Destroyers
  • Artillery
  • Aircrafts
  • Allied Units

Note that you need to unlock all of the units in order for the achievement to pop, not just one in each category. You will get to this point during Operation 3.

Game completed (Campaign Mode)

This achievement simply requires completion of the campaign mode. Here is a list of every mission and its mission type:

Mission 1: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 2: Infiltration (Reach the green circle on the other side of the map)

Mission 3: Defense (Kill all units while making sure to keep your's alive)

Mission 4: Sabotage (Blow up the control points)

Mission 5: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 6: Escort (Get the engineer to the other side of the map alive)

Mission 7: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 8: Infiltration (Destroy the artillery positions across the map)

Mission 9: Defense (Keep the engineer alive/kill all enemies)

Mission 15: Attack (Simply kill all enemies)

Mission 16: Sabotage (Place explosives at the V2 rocket sites)

Mission 17: Attack (Place market beacons to receive supplies)

Mission 18: Defense (Hold out for 14 rounds/kill all enemies)

Mission 19: Attack (Get your troops to the supply points)

10 heroic victories achieved (Campaign Mode)

Arguably the hardest aspect to this game will be the achieving 10 heroic victories on 10 different missions in one playthrough. Heroic difficulty for starts is the best rating you can receive upon completing a mission. What contributes to rating? This:

  • Number of shots hit compared to number of shots fired
  • Number of unharmed to the number of wounded to the number of killed
  • Number of enemies killed
  • Number of turns to complete the mission (the more turns the less likely for a high rating)

IMPORTANT! Please note that these 10 wins need to be done in one campaign playthrough which is 21 missions long. If you do not get 10 heroic victories in one playthrough you will need to do another playthrough in order to get 10 new missions to the Heroic ranking.

But which missions are best/easiest to do in order to get these heroic ratings? It's up in the air. Some people are much better at the stealth missions (I personally hated them and simply rushed--hard through them). Get a good feel which missions you are best at, and just plan ahead. Notice the different symbols on the map when you are moving onto the next mission.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2405/5-n834Q=.jpgSupreme commander 120http://www.x360a.org/images/misc/g-icon.gif

Fourth operation completed without casualties (Campaign Mode)

The achievement requires you to complete the fourth and final operation in the campaign without losing a single unit. This in essence means that you cannot have any of your troops die at any point in the five missions that encompass the final operation. Here are a couple quick tips to help you get this booger:

  • It may seem silly but if you have a unit die simply quit out of the mission and start it over. This is crucial because if you have a soldier die in a mission and then move to the next you will need to start a whole new campaign just to get to this last operation.
  • If you have room for a medic on the field they will keep your foot soldiers alive and well in the face of the tough battles that operation four has.
  • After each mission remember to boost Patton's points as well as use your extra prestige to heal all of your troops. The missions only get tougher as you near the end.
  • Multiple run-throughs per mission may help you to get the lay of the land making your plan of attack more concise and more focused on the objective at hand.

Here are the missions for Operation 4:

Mission 16: Sabotage (Place explosives at the V2 rocket sites)

Mission 17: Attack (Place market beacons to receive supplies)

Mission 18: Defense (Hold out for 14 rounds/kill all enemies)

Mission 19: Attack (Get your troops to the supply points)

Mission 20: Retreat (Withdraw from the area keeping the maximum number of troops alive)

Mission 21: Attack (Reach the target area with your troops)

Each achievement needs the gamerscore values.

Putting them in now. Thanks for the heads up.

how hard would you say supreme commander is?

If you are not good at turn based RTS games then pretty tough. Otherwise going back to missions you did early on and just redoing them with your new found familiarity of the game will make it easy.

You will really need to make sure that you have ample prestige going into the 4th Operation, your army has a good mix of tank/aircraft/strong soldier and long distance shooter, and that you are more than willing to play maps multiple times to learn how enemies react and move.

Great guide! It's nice to know that there are more people who enjoy the History Channel games. :drunk

Working on her. :p She'll be done just as soon as I find the time to finish the game myself.

Oh and by the way..

Love me some History Channel games. >=p

Edit: As a side note to the person who gave my guide a one star, if you voiced your opinion and let me know why it is a 1 star maybe I could improve it and make it better.

I understand the wording may seem like you can upgrade, but the achievement itself says recruit a bazooka unit. :p

Edit: Extra wording has been added to clarify confusion.

Edit 2: I believe I have completed the guide. I'll give it a few more days to see if anyone has any comments, questions, concerns, or additions and will then drop it off to the guide team.

Enjoy.

Great guide thanks

if you know which maps are best for heroic that would be awesome.

I am just starting Loving the game but wish the manual for the chart had color

I would say the attack maps are the easiest to get the heroic rating on. All you need to do is kill off the enemies while making sure your's don't take too many hits. Escort missions are also on the level of being easy as the attack missions.

I think that would have made the instruction manual perfect if it had some wonderful color lol.

Thanks for the guide!

A few questions:

1. What is the best strategy to get 10 heroic wins? Is it better to try and get them in the first 10? What is better slow/no injuries/ lots of kills vs. speed? What is the best strategy to redo a mission since it auto saves once you get your rating???

2. What is the best mix if troops you should have going into op 4?

Thanks!!!

Thanks!!!

I'll try to sort this out for you beat I can.

1. Best strategy is to play through the missions in a slow manner. There is no sense in rushing through any of them. Although I dot have exact numbers, you will do better on a mission in which you take 16 turns and lose no troops and only have two soldiers get hurt compared to a mission which you finish in 8 rounds as lose a troop and have four guys get wounded.

You also can't redo a mission. In order to go back you either need to start a new campaign or play all the way through the first one and then simply continue onward.

2. Best mix of troops in my opinion is probably as follows:

-4 snipers

-4 bazooka

-2 commandos for safe bets

-Best 10 fuel tank you can afford.

-1 fighter airplane

actually You can reload the campaign I finished mission 2 with a major victory and I wanted heroic so when it shows mission select hit x for load and it will let you select mission be but warned it will backup to that point so all info from the point on is lost, ala if you were on mission 8 and did mission 2 you have to redo all those missions.

and Deadly Dog I have a bit of info for heroic some missions its better to go quick such as mission 2 to get heroic it has to be done with 8 turns as I did it with 9 turns and no kills (this is a stealth mission) and I then did it with 8 turns and 1 kill and it was heroic.

But for the 3rd mission you have to survive to round 14 I just killed everything on the map with no deaths by round 6 or 7 and just skipped the rest of the turns and got heroic.

For mission 1 I first did it slow with no deaths and perfect accuracy and even no damage done to my guys I only got a major victory I went back and did it quick with a injury and no deaths and got heroic so amount of turns is a large part into heroic.

Other tips I found are

After you move or kill someone hit y and aim your ground soldiers in a direction you want them to cover and extend the cone this is good for covering corners as if they enter it you will normally insta kill them or seriously injury them before they get to fire at you

What I was referring to was keeping your troops safe over rushing through the map. If you we're to rush and injure units instead of taking a few more rounds and having nobody get hurt the latter--as it is my experience, will bring heroic victories about. Either way I think it is a combo of rounds to kills to injuries/deaths on your side, and please know I am not saying that if you are super slow you will still get heroic ratings, but the health of your troops appears to be the biggest factor.

That tip works only when your soldier has available shots left, although it is valuable for sure.

yea sorry I was just trying to also put in don't be a turtle you got to move with some speed and lol I assume someone will remember you need to have some ammo for that to work I just didn't figure that out though tell level 3 or 4 and found it extremely useful

What are the missions I should target to go after Heroic. I started the campaign over to knock out as many heroic victories as possible, but I am stuck on first one.

Rd 6 11/15 shots and 1 injured (-4).

Started using grenades so I can get better accuracy. Can't help missed shots as it happened when the enemy moved into my vision.

Thoughts?

Ok on Mission 2:

Rd 6

Hits 7/7

No Dmg

7 Killed

Maj victory

Thoughts? Am I not supposed to kill anyone??

Any ideas on the 2nd? Beat it on Rd 6 7/9 hits, 7 kills and only 3 dmg on 1 soldier. Maj Victory.

What route do you go?

Use the following quote as a guide. I didn't get a heroic victory ever on this stealth mission.
