StolenPaper18
Water has to touch lava that is not moving! You can usually find a few places where there is water near lava and if you break a few bricks can sometimes get the water to flow straight to the lava. Otherwise just fill a bucket with water and drop it next to lava. Edited May 11, 2012 by StolenPaper18

UberPirateNinja
so the water has to be on top of the lava? i've found a couple of places where water has met a pool of lava, but no idea what's supposed to happen to get the obsidian. does it pop up on it's own? is it a block you need to mine? VladimirK
It's a block you need to mine. With a diamond pickaxe. Or you can create it in the pattern you need with a bucket of lava placed on a block and then placing a bucket of water onto a block above that. Like an L shape: [1] [2][3] Empty bucket of lava onto [3] then the bucket of water onto [1] - boom, Obsidian block where the lava was placed. romanzad
if you have some redstone dust you can do this... i tried this and works perfectly. got over 50 blocks now main benefit is you can keep your lava bucket and just rinse and repeat!! iiPaDFooT
haha its worth two posts its that good, trying to build a house from obsidian at the moment i thought about that but even though obsidians easy to come by, that doesn't mean diamonds are. idk how long a diamond pickaxe lasts and i don't plan on finding out anytime soon. iiPaDFooT
1562 blocks. so it goes by blocks and not hits then right? like it's not counting 30-40 for every piece of obsidian since thats how many it takes to mine a block.
RDrules
ok, to make it water has to come in contact with a lava source block, these are the ones that the lava flows from when you see it it doesnt matter if it contacts the side or top of them as long as it comes in contact with it
grimmbodean1006
Theres a really easy way 2 make an obsidian generator for your shelter, its so simple. All you need is 1 bucket of lava, 1 bucket of water, a dispenser and a redstone torch. Use any block like dirt, place 1 down and put dispenser on top. Now break the block of dirt under the dispenser, and also break the block under that so you have a hole in the ground. Go behind the dispenser and place your water bucket, and it will flow into the hole under dispenser. Now go rite behind where you placed the water, and place 2 blocks of dirt on top of each other, and put the redstone torch on the 2nd block facing the dispenser. Now just load your lava bucket into the dispenser, and your done. To use, just put a redstone dust on ground in front of dispenser, and theres instant obsidian. Dont ask how it works,it just does
