Why do they make platinum hits versions of games?

Just a question I have always asked myself. I cannot stand seeing a platinum hits or greatest hits box on my shelf it drives me crazy. As much as I despise Gamestop, I was in there earlier today to pickup a copy of Burnout Paradise. Granite I don't go to Gamestop very often, when I do I always ask if I can have a non platinum hits. Sure enough they never have any regular copies of what I want.

Anyways enough ranting. Anyone know why they make these?

I just bought Mafia II Platinum hits. Paid $2 more what I would have paid for the original, and i got $32 worth of DLC. They should do more often.

Its a different story when it includes something extra. But I don't know how they don't understand that the box looks UGLY.

It's punishment for not buying the game on release. That way, they all stand out as shining beacons in your library going "look at me!, my owner won't pay full price for a fantastic game such as I!"

Sony and Nintendo do the same things with their versions of the platinum hits, and it was the same last generation as well.

Ah a quick rant before work!

Okay so let's do this quickly. I used to hate Greatest Hits and Platinum Hits...I still do! Except for in Resident Evil's case, in which I actually end up buying those variations as well (see: Post your Gaming Collection thread for that). However, I still dislike the designs...obviously the color sticks out for these rereleases. But it does let you know these games sold enough to be considered "Hits". Well, at least on both PS2 and Xbox...they're "Selects" for Wii and "Player's Choice" for Gamecube.

I really dislike the Platinum Hits for a relatively simple reason: the spines. They remove the original spine text which usually used the actual artwork for the game logo and instead replace it with a "Gamestop" white background with black text or...well, a PS2 generation PAL regioned spine ;>_>. I don't like that, there's no creativity to the spine and it just looks bland. The only game in my collection that suffers this is Fallout 3: GOTY...earlier Platinum Hits on the Xbox still used the original spine, like GTAIV and Resident Evil 5. Anything post-change to the top logo (which removed the "lines" in the Xbox's white section and now it's just pure white...this is on the spine mind you) has the white background with black text, so I'd say...pre-2010? Maybe 2009...

Anyways, I'll talk more on it later...maybe.

@The people saying they look ugly.

While I too dislike platinum hits cases, they've at least gotten better. Here's three versions:

The PAL version of the Platinum Hits, the 'Classics', looks best to me. At least they kept the green look and hopefully also the case of traditional Xbox games. The biggest problem with the Platinum Hits has always been the ugly grey cases. I understand you want the games to stand out and be noticeable, but changing the colour of the case is going too far. All that needs to be done is a different slip cover in the game itself. Most people don't want to show off they have a Platinum Hit anyway; they would rather people see a green case to show they didn't just bandwagon on to the game like many people do.

Yeah, I mean I recently picked up Borderlands 1 GOTY 'Classics' and the box for that is nice too. Minimal and the original art is preserved.

Almost all Platinum Hits in the US are $19.99, but for some stupid ass reason, Left 4 Dead 2 is $29.99 as a Platinum Hits. Go figure.

Anyways, now that someone posted images of the older Platinum Hits...yes, the original case was horridly bad. It's the final case that I don't like, as they change the spine to the blank white background with standard black text. Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY for example and Fallout 3 GOTY. They just don't look that nice on a shelf...however, I have to put up with white-backgrounds and black text anyhow for Resident Evil games out of the PAL region. At least those on PS2 and like RE4 on Gamecube.

Now I've seen this I have to admit they have gotten better over time. Those damn ugly first ones I hate with a passion though, don't see why they needed to have all of that crap around the outside.
