Overview:

-Estimated achievement difficulty: 5/10

-Offline: 7

-Online: "3" (must have location tracking on)

-Approximate amount of time to 200http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg: 2 Hours

-Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 3+

-Missable Achievements: None

-Glitched achievements: No

-Do cheat codes disable achievements: N/A

-Does difficulty affect achievements: No difficulty settings.

-Extra Equipment Needed?: You must allow location tracking on your WP7 for a few achievements.

Nine of the ten achievements require little or no skill. Only "Gold Rush" presents a challenge, as the gold medal requirements are tough especially when combined with the difficult phone controls.

Introduction:

Asteroids Deluxe is another game in the line of Game Room games on Windows Phone 7. Asteroids Deluxe was originally released in 1980 in the arcade to counteract the exploits present in the original Asteroids, which allowed experienced players to play for long periods on the same quarter. Deluxe amps up the difficulty with more accurate UFOs, a Killer Satellite enemy, and adjusted scoring. The game features a 12 second, un-replenishable shield.

Translated to the phone, the game is tough to control, especially compared to console ports or collections. You have to work with what you got to master the gold medals. The WP7/360/PC cross-platform leaderboards are a nice touch and medals earned carry over to all versions. Ideally then, you would earn the medals on XBLA/GFWL if you are willing to put down the extra $$$ and own two versions of the game. Three golds just on the phone aren't entirely impossible however.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:

In-Game Accomplishments

There are 5 achievements for doing in-game accomplishments. They are:

TryTryAgain

Get the Ball Rolling

Across the Board

Gold Rush

Unidentified Flying Object

You'll want to do "TryTryAgain" the very first time you play the game. Your first session score 0 points, then 5, then any other score (as described in the guide). The rest you will get while obtaining your three gold medals. The Score and Survival medals are difficult, and there is a definite learning curve here. However, any medals you have unlocked in Asteroids Deluxe for XBLA/GFWL carry over here so you may already have a great head start on the medal achievements.

Motion Achievements

Three achievements require you to be in motion as you complete them, so you will need to be in a car or other vehicle.

They are the following:

Velocity Gamer

Keep it Moving

Retro Roadie

To sum them up: play while travelling 35 mph (55 kph), have one playthrough last 2/3 of a mile, and travel 6+ miles (10km) in all your playthroughs.

Misc. Achievements

There are 2 other achievements and these involve zero skill whatsoever. They are:

Shaking Things Up

Credit Where Credit is Due

You simply need to play a game with tilt controls and view the credits.

Conclusion:

The Gold Medals are bit more harsh compared to other Game Room titles, but if you have the skills --or more importantly the patience-- to get all 3 Gold Medals, this is another quick Game Room 200/200.

Surpassed your own leaderboard score 3 times

It's important that you get this out of the way right away when you first purchase the game. Get a score of zero on your first try, shoot an asteroid on your second try, and then proceed with your Gold Medal runs after that. Your XBLA/GFWL scores do not affect this achievement, only your phone scores count.

Won 3 gold medals

There are medals for Score, Survival, and Time Played:

Score (20,000 Points)

With the awkward controls this may seem impossible but it certainly is not. Difficult, but not impossible. The strategy should be to attack quickly. Sometimes small asteroid fragments break off and start to travel very fast. You'll want to concentrate on these small fragments as they can come back to get you if you don't get them right away. When UFOs appear, you'll immediately want to hit your thrusters and aim and shoot while on the move. Remaining stationary here will leave you a sitting duck. For Killer Satellites, you'll want to thrust, then turn around quickly to shoot as they follow you. You'll likely have to turn around and create some distance and repeat. Killer Satellites

You get an extra life at 10,000, and don't forget to use your shields! It's key to be aggressive but also aware of your buttons (shields, thrust, etc.)

Survival (6:00 Minutes)

Six minutes could seem like an eternity in Asteroids Deluxe. This could come naturally during a Gold Medal Score run, so you'll want to employ some of the same strategies. However, where the strategy may differ a bit is that you might want to stretch out the end of each wave to last a bit longer. Towards the end of each wave, a Killer Satellite will appear. It is important that you break it apart and destroy the fragments of it, as you get big points which lead extra lives. Subsequently, you'll want to shoot UFOs quickly too. They will not only shoot you, but shoot Killer Satellites and the remaining asteroid pieces. If you can safely manage the few remaining asteroid chunks you can stretch out the time. You get extra lives at 10K and 20K so balance your attack accordingly.

Time Played (2 Hours)

A little longer than some other Game Room games, but you might need both hours in order to master the other two gold medals.

*If you own the XBLA or GFWL version, your medals carry over to WP7. This could potentially unlock achievements just for purchasing.

Shot down 10 UFOs in ranked mode

This is cumulative over all playthroughs, not just one session. This will come very easily and quickly, likely one of your first achievements.

Played using tilt controls

From the Main Menu tap Help & Options, then Configuration, and change the controls to Tilt. Play one game with tilt controls to unlock.

Travelled an accumulated distance of 6 miles (10 km) while playing the game

You'll obviously need to play while in some sort of moving vehicle while playing to unlock these three achievements. The game uses location tracking on your phone, not the accelerometer, so throwing the phone, etc., won't work.

Nice guide! You have an incomplete sentence in the opening though.

How about a guide for Centipede? That's the only Game Room title I can't get the High Score gold on...

Thanks for pointing out the error. Didn't quite know what I was getting at there yet so I was going to get back to it and never did.

Not sure if I have enough interest in Centipede or even Pitfall for that matter to purchase/make a guide. Although, it would be 'neat' to make a guide for all 6 Game Room games (thought about doing this for Must Have Games too). I really liked Lunar Lander, and Asteroids wasn't as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be IMO, but nonetheless there are just too many buttons for this to control like it would with a controller. I was happy in the end.

You can look forward to a Doodle Jump guide however as I have the game on iPhone and loved it and will be purchasing that right away :) Same for Angry Birds <3 <3 <3 <3

Anyone know if you need to be connected to 3g or wifi whilst one the move?

I want to get the game but if it involves me having to get 3g or wifi on the move, achievements would be unobtainable for me.

Unlocked them on the way to work, no wifi or 3g required.

JUST A WORD OF WARNING ABOUT THIS GAME: The Game Room servers to connect the game with the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game are no longer functional. Therefore, you cannot complete the medals on other platforms. They must be done on Windows Phone only. This will make the Gold Medal achievement quite difficult. That is all.
