Welcome to Foul Play! Foul Play is a side scrolling combo-driven beat-em up with a twist. You are actually in a play, and the audience are rating your performance. The game has 22 gorgeously designed levels, and all of the monsters and bad guys you face are extras in the play, you can often see their legs or faces (complete with little moustaches) underneath their costumes. How you perform, or how well you beat the hell out of your enemies, will determine the audiences mood, and thus your score. Keep on getting hit and they will boo you off stage. Keeping up your combos and avoiding getting hit will get you perfect scenes and see the audience cheering and throwing their top hats up in delight!

Step 1: Playthrough the game

You will see that each level has three challenges. Complete all three challenges in a level, and you will unlock charms. These give you perks such as incresed audience mood, more time to keep combos, and longer special moves. However, some of these challenges won't be possible right away, as you may need to have learned moves (which you get by levelling up), so just play through the game and get what you can done. By the end of the playthrough, you should have reached the maximum level, level 12.

Step 2: Challenges

Now you should have unlocked all of the moves, including your new best freind; the flurry attack. This is performed by parrying the enemy with :bbut:, then hitting :xbut: five times. You can then parry the next enemy and continue the cycle. Many of the challenges involve combos, perfect scenes and timed challenges, and this is the best move for keeping the combos going and to clear rooms quickly. Once you have a grip of the game mechanics, none of these should pose you too many problems.

Step 3: All the Stars and Mop Up

You will probably have five-starred most of the levels by this point, but now go and hammer through any levels you haven't. Remember, keeping the audience mood as high as possible is your priority, so sometimes you may want to sacrifice your combo by moving out of the way of a boss or big guy attack. The main tricky one is Play 2, Act 5, but see the guide for "Vaudeville Legend" for help with this one. If you have any of the "perform X of X move" achievements, go and grind them out, and you are done!

Conclusion

Foul Play is a pretty underated and unloved game, but an enjoyable beat-em up with some original ideas and challenging elements. It is a fairly short and relatively easy 400:gsicon:, so what is your excuse for not playing it? Go beat up some trees (well, guys dressed like trees)!

Level 12 is the maximum level. You will gain levels fairly quickly, and should have it by the time you have finished your playthrough, even if you rush through it. If you have it, you can equip the Bearicorn Mane, which adds 15% fame at the end of each level to help you level up quicker. For more information about charms, see "Daemonologist".

All Charms unlocked

Each act you play (bar the final act of each play) will have three challenges. Completing all three challenges of any act will unlock a charm for you. The charms are not tied to the level, so will unlock in the same order whichever act's challenges are done first. You do not need to finish the level for the challenge to save. If you have a challenge that has to be done at a certain point, for example the "combo point" type ones, and you don't manage to get it, you can "kill" yourself, ie just get hit until the mood meter drops down to the bottom. You will then have the option to restart at a checkpoint, which is normally just before the part you need. This is also useful when going for perfect scenes.

The types of challenges you may get are the following:

Throw Enemies into Props: There are many breakable props around, so you need to parry with :bbut: and then throw enemies with :bbut: into the props around. Scenes with this challenge will have plenty of props about so don't worry too much. See "The Stagehands Hate Me" for more info about breaking props.

Time Challenges: These can be quite tricky, as want to be finishing as quickly as possible. This means keeping your combo up, and not getting hit as you take a step back costing you time. If you have big enemies on the screen, throw a small enemy at them (parry with :bbut:, throw with :bbut: again). When the big guys are on the floor dazed, pick them up with :bbut: and do a flurry attack by mashing :xbut:. Rinse and repeat, then finish the small guys up with flurry attacks.

Combos: There are a lot of these. Your biggest friend here is your special. Hitting :rbbut: will double your combo for a short time, so make sure you hit that before starting your combo. The first unlocked charm, the Rabbit's Foot gives you +3 combo for every parry, so make sure you have that at least equipped before trying these. Once you have levelled up a few times, you will unlock the flurry attack. This is done by parrying with :bbut:, then hitting :xbut: five times, which will launch them. Most of the time there will be another guy waiting to attack which you can parry and continue. If you have any big guys involved, use the method above to deal with them. If you only have big guys, pay attention and if you see them ready to attack, make sure you parry them and continue attacking with :xbut: or :ybut:. Other charms that may help you with this are the Vampire Fang (20% speed increase) and the Clocktower Cog (more time before a combo is dropped), but you will get them quite late on.

Perfect Scenes: A perfect scene is where you clear all enemies in one combo without getting hit. See "Well Rehearsed" for more information on perfect scenes.

Ace Returns: An Ace Return is given when you return a fired projectile back at an enemy using :bbut:. See "You Should See My Backhand..." for more information on Ace Returns.

Human Cannonball: To perform a Human Canonball, you must first parry with :bbut:, and once you have the enemy in the air, press :bbut: again to launch him at other enemies. If he hits two or more enemies, you will get this. You can hit them up to four times with :xbut: before throwing them if you like.

Cannonball Combo: Following the steps for Human Cannonball, a Canonball Combo is given when you manage to do three Human Cannonballs in a row without breaking your combo. As soon as you fire off your first, press :bbut: to parry a waiting enemy and repeat. See "Roughly Tumbled" for more information on Cannonball Combos.

Saviour: These challenges will put you with three innocent extras and a bunch of enemies. Your goal will be to keep at least one of these alive. Focus on one of them, and throw your enemies using the techniques above. This will help control the screen. The other two extras will probably die, but you will damage the enemies attacking them so it will be easier when mopping up the room. The extas will run about the screen, so make sure you focus and don't let them slip away!

Stunning Piledrivers: A Stunning Piledriver is done by parrying the enemy (:bbut:), and then slamming them to the ground by pressing :ybut:. If you manage to stun two or more enemies, you will get one of these. See "JaBoroni" for more information about Stunning Piledrivers.

Take out the Leader Last: Simply take out the leader last. The leaders are often big guys, and will always be clearly marked. Just avoid them as much as you can, beating on everybody but him. Just finish him off last for these ones.

All Stars collected

Each level has a possible of five stars to achieve, dependant of how many points you get. Each level has different point thresholds for star ratings, but the key is to keep your mood meter (the thing at the top) as high as possible; ideally at four as much as possible. The key to this is to keep your combos going. Once you have the flurry attack unlocked this will be your best freind. :bbut: to parry, then :xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut:. You can swap out the final :xbut: with a :bbut: to throw, with is useful if you have bigger enemies on the screen. This knocks them down so you can pick them up and do a flurry attack on them. You can use :rtbut: to forward flip towards the next enemy when you are landing if they are out of range.

The hardest level to get five stars on by far is Play 2, Act 5. This is a boss level, and the boss has a few cheap attacks. There are not many small enemies, and the ones that do appear don't attack to often and when they do, it is normally when the boss is attacking, so you are in real danger of getting hit by one or the other. Try and stay away from the boss when the small guys are there, and pick them off one by one. Remember to use your special :rbbut: when you have it, as points are really precious in this level.

You can use the Scarab Shell and Werewolf Claw charms if you have them (second and fourth to unlock) if you have them, as they raise the mood meter quicker and make it drop more slowly if you get hit.

You achieved a x200 combo

Hitting :rbbut: will double your combo for a short time, so make sure you hit that before going for a huge combo.

There is a challenge in one of the later levels which requires you to get a 200x combo, and will give you plenty of pretty simple enemies (loads of small guys, no fancy stuff like fire, etc) which will make this pretty simple. If you perfect that scene and use your special, you can get a 270+ combo.

Remained in the air for 15 seconds

Using the flurry attack when you are at level five, (parry with :bbut:, then :xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut:), and then parrying the next enemy and repeating, you can stay in the air for quite a while, so 15 seconds is pretty easy.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-1sOKQ=.jpg Well Rehearsed… 20:gsicon:

Performed 50 Perfect Scenes

Perfect scenes are where you defeat all enemies in one combo, without getting hit once. This is much easier to do once you have levelled up a bit, as you will have more moves unlocked, in particular the flurry attack (parry with :bbut:, then :xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut:). In scenes with just small guys, you can use this attack, and there will usually be another guy ready to be parried, so you can just rinse and repeat. If you have them unlocked, using the Vampire Fang (20% speed increase) and the Clocktower Cog (more time before a combo is dropped) charms will help, as if there is nobody to parry you will be able to reach the next guy a lot quicker. Using the :rtbut: will to a flip jump, so if your next target is far away, flip towards them and hit them with :xbut: or :ybut: to continue your combo. If you have big guys on the screen, throw the little guys at them (parry with :bbut:, then up to four x:xbut:, then :bbut:. This will stun them, enabling you to do a flurry attack on them. Taking them out first is key to getting perfect scenes, as they are much tougher facing them one on one as you will also have to parry their attacks.

Some scenes will be much harder to perfect. Don't even attempt to perfect the boss levels. The flying enemies and the mermaids in particular, so you will have to move around a bit and use regular attacks and wait for one of them to parry.

If you still need this after everything else is done, the best place to grind this is Play 2, Act 3. In the timed area, the tree guys come at you in enclosed spases. Stand in the middle and keep abusing the flurry attack, and you can do three per run. The area is right near the beginning, so once you have them you can pause and restart the act and repeat.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-5DZwg=.jpg Roughly Tumbled 20:gsicon:

Performed 50 Cannonball Combos

A Cannonball Combo is awarded when you perform three Human Cannonball attacks in a row (in the same combo). To do a Human Cannonball, parry with :bbut:, then throw with :bbut: into at least two other enemies. Places with multiple enemies are the best for this, and there are a few scenes with challenges for performing them. You should have this by the time you have everything else done, but if not, pick pretty much any level to grind.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-xibr0=.jpg JaBaroni 10:gsicon:

Performed 100 Stunning Piledrivers

A Piledriver is performed by parrying an enemy (:bbut:), and then slamming them to the ground by hitting :ybut:. Upon landing, this will stun any enemies in the immediate vicinity. If you stun two or

more enemies, it will become a Stunning Piledriver. You will encounter enough enemies all throughout the game, and there are challenges for performing the move. You should have this by the time you finish everything else, if not pick any level to grind it.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-2Cli4=.jpg "You should see my backhand…" 15:gsicon:

Performed 50 Ace Returns

An Ace Return is where you fire a projectile back at an opponent using :bbut:. There are only a few enemy types that fire projectiles, most noticably and easily grindable in Play 1, Acts 1 and 2. The soldiers will fire muskets at you, and you can just ping them right back at them.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-ggfdc=.jpg Unstoppable Force 10:gsicon:.

Performed 100 Magnificent Combos

Once you have unlocked the flurry attack, getting big combos will not be an issue. A magnificent combo is a combo of 50+, so using your :bbut:, :xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut::xbut: move and repeating this will be a piece of cake. If you are struggling, use your special :rbbut: to double your combo and use charms to help you out.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-nAhUQ=.jpg The Stagehands Hate Me! 20:gsicon:

Performed 50 Stage Crasher moves

There are many stages in the game that have props, and there are a few challenges requiring you to break them. You will most likely break quite a few props just by playing through as well. To throw an

enemy, parry them with :bbut:, then throw them by pressing :bbut: again. If you throw them towards a prop, it will smash it and count towards your 50.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/2451/5-vhjPE=.jpg "To me, to you" 10:gsicon:

Performed 30 'Heads-Up' moves

A Heads-Up is performed by catching an enemy. There are three ways to do this. The more tricky and luck based way if grinding, but more natural to get while playing through, is to throw an enemy at the edge of the screen (parrry with :bbut: then :bbut: to throw, and keep hitting :bbut: and you will sometimes catch them. You can also catch an enemy that is throw by a larger enemy. The best place for this is Play 2, Act 1. When you get to the werewolves, the big guy will throw his minions at you. Catch them with :bbut: to get a Heads-Up. The final, cheaper way is to plug in another controller, and throw enemies at each other and catch them.
