Achievement Guide

Welcome to the TtheHedgehog's "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Achievement Guide."

Overview:

- Estimated achievement difficulty: 3/10
- Offline achievements: 12 (200 )
- Online achievements: 0
- Approximate time for 200 : 1.5-3 hours
- Minimum number of playthroughs required for completion: 1
- Number of missable achievements: None
- Glitched achievements: N/A
- Do cheat codes disable achievements: N/A

Points I 10
Score 20,000 points.
See "Points III."

Goodie Gumballs 10
Get a blue gumball.
This can be obtained in the first level. In "Angel Island Zone", or any subsequent level, pass a checkpoint marker (a signpost with a red circle and a star in the middle) with 50 rings. A spiraling ring of white stars will appear above the signpost. Hop into the ring and you'll be in the Gumball Bonus Stage. Simple keep bouncing up the sides of the wall to hit the gumball machine at the top. Do this until you get a blue gumball. NOTE: There are times where a black gumball comes out and knocks you down out of the level. However, it is likely you'll get a blue gumball on your first try.

Halfway there...
10
Collect 50 rings.
This can be obtained in the first level. As it says, collect 50 rings. This will happen naturally over the course of any level. Just watch out for traps and badniks.

Chaotic 10
Collect a Chaos Emerald.
See "Complete Chaos."

Points II
15
Score 40,000 points.
See "Points III."

Wet and Wild
15
Finish the Hydrocity Zone.
See "Complete the Game."

Wet Feet 15
Run across water.
This can be obtained in the first level. You will obtain this achievement in either "Angel Island Zone" or "Hydrocity Zone." At one point while running through either of these levels, you will hit a speed boost that will propel you across water. This only happens once in "Angel Island Zone", but multiple times in "Hydrocity Zone."

Marble Finishes 15
Finish the Marble Garden Zone.
See "Complete the Game."

Points III 25
Score 80,000 points.
There are two ways to obtain these achievements.

-There is the legitimate way, which will just come with playing the game naturally. Collecting rings, hitting item boxes, beating badniks and bosses, and the end of the level bonuses all go towards your overall total. If you simply play this game from beginning to end without continuing, you'll get these achievements.

-On the final level of the game, "Launch Base Zone", there are alarms that you trigger by running through them. These alert kamikaze badniks that appear after you pass through the alarms completely. If you don't have the points achievements by this point, simply use this trick. At the beginning of the level there is an alarm. Walk through it, but stay just enough in it so the alarm continues to blare and the badniks spawn. As they come at you, prep your spin dash, but do not let it go. The badniks will fly into you dying and begin rasining in point value. Continue doing this for about 3 minutes and you'll have the achievements.

Complete Chaos 25
Collect all seven Chaos Emeralds.
In "Angel Island Zone", or any subsequent level, be on the look out for giant spinning rings. They are usually behind a barrier that you have to break with your spin dash attack. The first one can be located immediately after you start the game. Simply run forward until you come across the first vine swing. Drop down and then immediately turn around until you hit a wall. Spin dash through and jump through the ring. You will now be in a Special Stage. Collect all the blue spheres to get the Chaos Emeralds. An easier way to collect the spheres is to run around the outer edge of large groups of them. Collect all 7 before the end of the game for the achievement. Here is a guide that will help you find all the giant rings in the game.

Fast Freeze
25
Complete the Icecap Zone.
See "Complete the Game."

Complete the Game
25
Finish the game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is divided up into 6 different Zones with 2 Acts apiece. The game overall is not difficult. There is one part in the game that many people get stuck in and that is the fourth Zone, "Carnival Night." When you find yourself on a spinning cylinder, press up and then down in a slow repetitious manner to move the cylinder up and down. This is the only way to proceed at points in the level. In the end, there are a few tricky bosses, especially in the final level, but like all platformers of the time, you just need to memorize their attacks. While going for this, you'll pick up the achievements for the specific zones. Good luck!

it would be very important to point out casino night zone 2, many will get stuck, people can't beat the game if they cant figure out to beat casino night 2.

Casino Night is in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but I know what you're referring to. You're talking about Carnival Night. Thanks, I'll amend it into the "Complete the Game" achievement.

Carnival night really made me angry back in the day, had no idea how to move that flippin wheel thing.

Same here, the reason why I never beat Sonic 3 back in the day was because of that stupid room! I had to use the Sonic 2, switch the cartridge trick, fight the final boss.

Can't wait for this though...

Oh man, me too. I used to come up with all these crazy ideas on how to get through that level. Finally it turned out to be something completely random and stupid like that.

Anyway, great guide. I was just looking at the achievement list myself and thought "Haha, I could 200/200 this game in my sleep. Maybe I should write a guide before the game even comes out." But then I came here to see what discussion was going on, and here this guide is.

You might want to adjust the difficulty on those achievements. A 3/10 would actually be somewhat difficult. The only one here that could be considered even close to difficult is collecting all 7 chaos emeralds, and any veteran of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 knows how to get all 7 before he even hits Marble Garden Zone. In fact, to add to the guide, you might want to link to the ring location guide located here. Not only does it give tips on ring locations, but how to do the special stages, as well.

I honestly think a 1/10 or maybe 2/10 would be a better descriptor of the difficulty for this game. Also, the game does not take 1.5-3 hours to reach 200/200. The slowest run-through of this game I have ever seen with someone who had never played it was still less than 2 hours. The last time I played it, I was able to beat it in around 30 minutes without emeralds. Just some friendly suggestions.

Thank you for your input. As a Sonic fan and avid player of the originals, I understand that this game's achievements are very easy to obtain. However, I stand by my original ratings. I'm trying to make this guide as accessible to as many players as possible, hence why the ratings seem a little too high. For the difficulty I put it at 3 simply for people who haven't perhaps played the game (say your average pre-teen to teen group), yet know the fundamentals of a Sonic platformer. It might be difficult to find the rings, learn the stages, etc., but overall they'll get it in a little bit. If I had to, I'd drop it to a 2. As for the hours, again, accessibility. Die hards and old platformers like you and I can breeze through this list in 30 mins. Others not so much. I'm just being reasonable and setting goals for those unfamiliar with the game. I don't doubt though that most people will have all 200 in at least 1 hour.

Again, thank you for the input. I will however add the guide you linked to the achievement guide.

Another way to get the score achievements: If you finish a level in exactly 9:59, you will get a 100k time bonus.

Well I just got 200/200 points in the game. It took me exactly an hour starting with the time I began the download for the game. Don't worry, these achievements are extremely easy to get as long as you save after almost every move you make. Save before and after every bonus stage to help get all emeralds easier. As long as you don't finish EVERY stage with 0 rings, you'll have NO problems reaching 80,000 points. I wasn't even trying my hardest and I had already reached that score before the end of world 3.

getting 80,000 points was set WAY WAY too low imo. you get 50k for perfecting a bonus stage. first ring at the start of level one and you get
-20,000 cheev
-40,000 cheev
and
-one emerald cheev.

i had the 80k cheev before the first mini boss

took me bout 1:20 to finish this i loved this game as a kid so buying it for the cheevs was a must.

With the level select feature in the original, I was gonna agree about no missable achievements. But technically the achievement for all 7 Chaos Emeralds is "missable" as far as information in the roadmap goes because this version doesn't have the orignal save system where you could go back and try and get them again.

I never played Sonic 3 back when it first debuted on the Genesis and I must say I am surprised how EASY is was compared to 1 and 2 and the final battle was a cake walk compared to the Final Bosses in 1 and 2. I did it without any coins!

Now I just need the 7 Chaos Emeralds!

Need a clarification: players have many more than seven opportunities to get chaos emeralds, right? There seem to be enough Giant Rings in the game to just play through without needing a location guide. I have three emeralds so far and am still in the first zone of the game.

Thanks to this tip, I managed to get that achievement and I've got 200/200 on this game already.

There are 3 opportunities in each level to get Chaos Emeralds. You can easily have all 7 in Level 2-1.

That is true, however unless you are trying to barrel through the levels, they aren't missable. I had 7 of them from just playing and not hunting them out. Granted I remember where most of the secret areas are located, but there are way more than enough in the game to not miss the achievement.

Thats one thing that made sonic 3 too easy is that you got rings on the last boss

Im not complaining cause I hated beating a boss with no rings Ala Sonic 1 and 2
