the split screen depends on your screen settings (as in how HD it is)

Split screen depends on how they choose to make it when they make the game, not your tv settings. I have a 57" LCD HDTV and in this game the split screen is verticle, so is L4D.. yet GOW2 is horizontal. I think they should make all games with a verticle and horizontal option.

False, take a look at Halo 2, and if you read a few posts above you someone said they can't get Borderlands to go vertical and that it is stuck horizontal.

100% Agreed. Some games I just can't get along with in specific views, and it's times like this I head to the Options menu only to find I can't change it. I then proceed to get very wound up.

Halo 2 was different. The settings in the Dashboard on the Original Xbox mattered where the players played on split-screen. Widescreen made it vertical, if I remember correctly, and it was defaulted to horizontal.

As a reply to the OP, try changing your display options in Console Settings on the Dashboard. Try to play in SD instead if you're in HD, or vice-versa. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure there's no option to change it within the game.

i have played on several different tv's and some are vertical and some horizontal, it does depend on your screen settings

its because the plasma is more high definition than your other tv like i said up above

I believe that if you go to System Settings > Console Settings > Display > Screen Format then change it from widescreen to Normal that might work.

^ I'll try that when i get home from work.

I put this game on my older crappier tv and it went horizontal right away, so i guess it is just a matter of the settings, but thats pretty stupid.

I guess I just don't understand if it depends on your tv and settings then why are some verticle and some horizontal depending on what game it is, yet they are all being played on the same television with the same settings?

Its not complicated.

If you have a widescreen television it displays vertical split.
If you have a non widescreen tv it displays horizontal split.

Pretty obvious really, considering standard size tv isn't wide enough to support two screens side by side without them looking squashed and crap, whereas a nice big widescreen is, but a nice big widescreen slashed in half horizontally would certainly be wide enough but would look again squashed and crap. Vertical split on a widescreen tv creates two pictures that look relatively normal. I play splitscreen vertically all the time (I play two player with my second controller to make mobs a bit tougher, I only control one character) on my 32 inch widescreen tv and the two pictures look fine.

If you have a widescreen tv and want to play horizontal you could try changing your tv picture to standard size. I dunno if this will work or not, but its worth a try.

Edit: This btw is particular to how Borderlands chooses to handle split screen, other games are probably coded differently, so comparing Borderlands split screen to other games splitscreen isn't necessarily relevant.
