Do I need to play this before Bioshock 2?

I played the Bioshock 1 demo and liked what I played but with Bioshock 2 coming up soon I thought it might be better to grab that. How much will I miss out on/not understand without playing this one? I missed out on it back in the day.

Yes. You should definitely play the first game. BioShock is a very story-orientated game, in fact one of the best, so to get the full experience you need to play both, starting with the first. If you want to push through the story quickly, it should only take a few days, and it is relatively cheap to buy now. So to answer your question, hell yes.

The whole genius behind Bioshock is its thrilling and captivating storyline. You HAVE to get the first one in order to play the second. Your lucky too cuz it's cheap as hell!

It's highly reccomended because of the story and I'm pretty sure you can get it for around $5.00-$15.00 now. Pick it up.

I'm not sure if you need to as you play a different character and I believe your fighting a whole new enemy..

Storyline wise I'm not sure. You NEED to play Bioshock before or after Bioshock 2 comes out though, it's an amazing game and need's your love and attention. Applaud it's awesomeness with a dash of awesomesauce.

Yes for the following reasons:

1) Quite frankly, one of the best stories in a game on Xbox. Full of turns and at times, you will go "HOLY CRAP!"

2) Great combat system full of different ways to destroy enemies.

3) Great price for an easy collection in your library.

4) The most graphically beautiful scenery I've seen in a long time.

Those are my reasons as to why you should get it

I loved playing BioShock, personally one of my favourite story lines to a game ever. I believe that playing the first BioShock will mean you learning and understanding stuff a lot better. So if I were you I'd play the first BioShock before the second one.

As the second one hasn't come out yet, it's hard to judge, but I'd imagine that you would need to play the first one to fully appreciate the second's storyline. I never understood why people bother to skip the first game in series like this and then wonder what the hell is going on in the second game. My brother does this, and he says he doesn't get the story in the second game because he's never played the first.
