Awards Showcase Road Map - Bronze Achievement Guide - Bronze Submit - Bronze
Total Awards: 3 (more» ...)
Achievement Guide

- Estimated achievement difficulty: 3/10
- Approximate time: 8-10 hours
- Offline: 1000
- Online: 0
- Missable Achievements: 8 - Well done Judas, Light Relics, Dark Relics, Forbidden Love, Old Friend, The Damned, Burning Eyes, The Guide
- Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 2
- Glitched achievements: 0

- Cheats: 0,5 (Classic is ridiculously easy, so I count this as half a cheat !)

Playthrough 1:
Fire up your first playthrough on whatever difficulty you want, there are no difficulty achievements, but playing on Classic WILL ruin the experience, keep it for your 2nd playthrough or if you're just looking for a quick 1000 fix.

First of all, click here for the collectibles guide and keep it close. It contains all locations to relics, coins, shades and Beatrice stones. Coins, shades and virgil (explained in next paragraph) do NOT carry over nor is there a chapter selection screen, so missing one will require a FULL new playthrough in order to get the achievement.
Save often and in different slots.

Second, make sure to talk to Virgil, the poet, every time you see him, and keep talking to him until he disappears. Some of them hand out relics and are also mentioned in the guide. There is one appearance that 'can' be missed and it's the one in the room right before your first boss. Make a small tour in the room and you'll have no trouble spotting him.

Third, pick an alignment and stick with it for your whole first playthrough, by the end of it, you will have reached it's maximum level and be able to purchase all skills in it. I recommend taking unholy first and get to know your scythe moves. If you, for some reason, do not max it out or can't buy all the skills, there's no need to worry as you carry over your stats and relics to your next playthrough.

Lastly, 'Old Friend' and 'Forbidden Love' require you to absolve the shades in question. Even when you're going for Unholy first, DO NOT punish them, but absolve them by pressing . The locations are in the guide, along with a word of warning that you need to absolve them for the achievement.

Once you entered the first circle of hell, remember to punish/absolve shades and enemies, depending on what tree you picked, for they give the needed exp to max out the tree. Enemies that can be punished/absolved will display an symbol when weakened. Minions and babies are punished/absolved by grabbing them with .

While progressing through the game, keep in mind that you have to defeat 20 enemies with a counterattack, and 20 enemies with magic. I suggest doing this on minions, as they die the quickest. The counterattack achievement requires a skill in the Unholy Tree, but it's a lvl 1 skill and easy to obtain early on.
As soon as an enemy is about to land a hit, press . If done correctly, Dante will block in slow-motion. Follow with or to finish the move.

Beating the game will unlock resurrection mode (new game+) and 'Gates of Hell' survival mode.

Playthrough 2:
If you followed the locations guide and focused on 1 tree only in your first playthrough, you should only have 3 achievements left... those for maxing out your second tree and 'Gates of Hell'.
Start a new game and you will be asked to start it in resurrection mode. Accept, choose your difficulty and rip your way through hell while finishing your second tree.

Gates of Hell:
Start Gates of Hell, pick your difficulty and play through 50 waves of enemies with increasing difficulty. You can 'cheat' your way through by spamming relentlessly.
This will net you your last achievement.

Precious - 10
Find a Beatrice stone

See ‘Power of the Cross’

Power of the Cross - 20

Find all 3 Beatrice stones

Click here for a location guide.

If you miss the original location, they will appear again in other fountains you encounter later on in the game.
If you did not complete this in your first playthrough, you'll be able to find the remainder of the pieces you miss in the exact same locations you found the others before.

'Backup' Locations:

-Anger: Do not drop down to a big circular platform but continue along the cord to find an orange fountain.
-After the mirror maze area, you'll climb down a wall with several fire spouts. After you get to the bottom, you'll be in an area with mana and health fountains. Jump up to the alcove to the right. Then jump left across the gap. You'll see an item fountain behind you and one further ahead. You have to jump kind of around the wall to get to the one further along, which has the stone in it. (Thanks to Sting7785)

Relic Hunter - 10
Find a relic

‘See Dark Relics’

Light Relics - 20
Find all Holy relics

‘See Dark Relics’

Dark Relics - 20
Find all Unholy relics

Relics are accessories you can equip, granting you additional stats. Holy/Unholy ones require you to reach a certain level in the respective tree to equip them, while others are unaligned and can be equipped right off the bat.
You can wear up 2 relics, increased by another 2 if you acquired the extra relic slot skill in both trees. Collecting souls while wearing them will increase their stats and level to a maximum of 3. Refer to the relic itself to view the increments.

You can find a location guide to all 31 relics here.

Forbidden Love – 20
Find and absolve both Francesca da Polenta and Paolo Malatesta

Both shades can be found in Lust and they are pretty hard to miss. The location guide mentions when you're about to encounter these 'achievement shades'.
Grab the shade by pressing .Absolve them by pressing , if you punish them (), you will miss this achievement.

Old Friend - 20
Find and absolve Brunetto Latini

You'll find him on a platform in the Violence desert area, pretty hard to miss. The location guide mentions when you're about to encounter this 'achievement shade'.
Grab the shade by pressing . Absolve him by pressing , if you punish him (), you will miss this achievement.

Shades are lost souls scattered throughout the game, they are easily spotted by their aura and chatter.

Shades can be absolved or punished by grabbing them with . The you either push to punish or to absolve them. Punishing adds Unholy experience, whereas absolving them will grant Holy experience.

Click here for a location guide.

The Guide - 40
Collect all Virgil commentaries

The poet can be found at regular intervals, mostly before entering a new area or encountering a boss, giving you a piece of backstory. You can talk to him by pressing . Keep talking to him until he disappears as he hands out relics which are needed for another achievement.

Note: There's one appearance that can be missed, in the room right before the first boss encounter. Make sure to look around for him, before you grapple your way to the boss.

Soul Reaper - 50
Collect 60,000 Souls

Souls are collected by defeating enemies throughout the game. With these, you can buy new skills in the upgrade screen.

This will come naturally as you progress through the game. This is cumulative and you do not need to stockpile 60,000 souls.

Awards Showcase Road Map - Bronze Achievement Guide - Bronze Submit - Bronze
Total Awards: 3 (more» ...)
Burning Eyes - 10
Send Charon back into the abyss

Very hard to miss, I'll give you the video anyway:

Warming Up - 10
Perform a 50 hit combo

See ‘Poetry in Motion’

Masterpiece - 10
Perform a 200 hit combo

See ‘Poetry in Motion’

Poetry in Motion - 20
Perform a 666 hit combo

This method is the easiest and fastest way to obtain this achievement.

Keep in mind that you need to finish the game first because you need the Infernal difficulty for it to work. Simply make a save before entering the first trial in Caledbolg and do not overwrite it.
Once you have finished the game, load up that save and change the difficulty to 'Infernal'.
Equip the Coin of Plutus relic (adds seconds before your combo resets) and start the first trial which gives you infinite magic and can start spamming 'Sins of the Father'.

This video shows how it's done:

Holy Warrior - 10
Kill 30 Minions

This will come naturally as you progress through the game.

Demon Slayer - 10
Kill 30 Demons

This will come naturally as you progress through the game.

Bad Nanny - 10
Kill 20 Unbaptized Babies

This will come naturally as you progress through the game.

Indigestion - 10
Kill 5 Gluttons

This will come naturally as you progress through the game.

Note: There's only 6 of these in the game. Don't worry if you haven't got the achievement yet, the last one shows up pretty late in the game.

Confessional - 10
Kill 5 Heretics

This will come naturally as you progress through the game.

Note: They first appear in Heresy, the lower part of hell. No need to worry, you'll soon wish they didn't.

Countermeasures - 10
Kill 20 enemies using a counter move

You need to acquire the counter move from the unholy tree. Press to block an incoming attack, Dante will block in slow-motion if timed right, finish it by using or .
I suggest doing this on minions, even then, they’re not a one-hit kill. Keep doing this throughout the game vs minions and you should be able to unlock it pretty fast.

Another method is deflecting the bats' fireballs which is done in pretty much the same way, but requires the followup skill from the first countermove. (, then )

Superstition - 10
Kill 20 enemies using magic

Self-explanatory. Use magic to kill enemies. Minions preferable, as they die the quickest.

Give Me Strength - 10
Open 20 Health fountains

You will find these scattered throughout the game. You should have no problem finding them.

These are the green fountains, make sure to use them, even though you're not in need of health, until you get the achievement.

Sorcerer's Apprentice - 10
Open 20 Mana fountains

You will find these scattered throughout the game. You should have no problem finding them.

These are the purple fountains, make sure to use them, even though you're not in need of mana, until you get the achievement.

Light in the Dark - 30
Reach Holy Level 7

Absolve minions, babies and enemies that require a finishing move by pressing . This will accumulate Holy experience. Charon’s Oar (refer to the collectibles guide for the location) will boost your holy exp by 10% per lvl (max 30%)
You cannot do both in one playthrough. Start resurrection mode (new game +) to continue leveling the second tree.

Death's Apprentice - 30
Reach Unholy Level 7

Punish minions, babies and enemies that require a finishing move by pressing . This will accumulate Unholy experience. Tail of Minos (refer to the collectibles guide for the location) will boost your unholy exp by 10% per lvl (max 30%)
You cannot do both in one playthrough. Start resurrection mode(new game +) to continue leveling the second tree.

Holy Man - 30
Max out the Holy path

Reach Holy level 7 and buy all the skills in this tree.
See ‘Man of Evil’

Man of Evil - 30
Max out the Unholy path

Reach Unholy level 7 and buy all the skills in this tree.

You’ll not be able to do both trees in 1 playthrough, so focus on one tree per playthrough. Fire up ressurection mode to continue maxxing out both paths.

Gates of Hell - 60

Defeat all enemy waves in the Gates of Hell Arena

This is an extra feature that unlocks by completing the game. It is an arena-like game mode against the clock which hosts 50 waves of enemies with increasing difficulty. Time is your biggest enemy here. Shred through the waves as quickly as possible, and you might just be able to complete this.
Set the difficulty on classic for an easy achievement, don't take it easy though, time still is your main foe.

Note: You can 'cheat' your way through the waves by having a maxed out holy tree and spamming . Expect to get bored though.

You will receive extra time bonuses for the following goals:

Complete a wave: 30 seconds
Do not get hit during a wave: 15 seconds
Absolve/Punish an enemy: 5 seconds

Nice quick start to a guide. Looks like a good job so far. Hope this game is as great as the demo was. I saw IGN gave it only a 7.5.

Thanks. Lucifer's strategy is one big mess though, the point comes across but even I see that it lacks any form of proper grammar. :P

I'm not entirely sure where the 'low' reviews come from, but for me this game is 8.5-9/10, but I've never played GOW, so this was a whole new experience for me, aside from the vague connection to DMC and NG as it is a hack'n'slash game. ;-)

looks good so far. i'm hoping i'll manage to find all the coins and the damned on my first time through. i'm mid way through gluttony and have them all so far i think. i did miss a fountain in the mirror room, so hopefully that was just souls and not a coin.
edit: aww, just seen the video of the mirror room, it was a beatrice stone
hope it gives me another one.

great work man, thanks for the early guide!!!

With some videos it will help.

It looks like it won´t be that hard to get the 1000 on this game, as most achievements are story related and can´t be missed..

I´ll definatly buy this!!!

ive got a tip for the Countermeasures achievement:
do it against these flying bats or whatever they are, most of the time there are no other enemies just the bats so you have plenty of time to do it, and on easy they're dead with one hit
btw: you need an additional upgrade to reflect their projectile

For those who pre ordered the game, it comes with 3 items one of them adds hits each time u hit something
level 1 adds 1
level 2 adds 2
level 3 adds 3 ( means 1 hit will show As 4 hits, bit the Dmg is still 1 hit)
meaning u only have to hit minions 166.5 times

I got 400 hits on the 2nd circle. Using aoe attacks and the lust magic helps. thanks for the guide

Finished the 'Gates of Hell' achievement, so the guide is pretty much complete.
The only thing that needs doing is a full list of collectibles (coins, damned, relics) which I will try to compile in one chronological list, given I find all of them. :P

Doing the second playthrough as we speak.

Hi, and thanks a lot for the guide. I have just started playing and I have a small question. You do not happen to know if the achievement "The Damned" counts if you punish all the shades except the ones needed to be absolved for the other achievements?

Thanks in advance

It does not matter if you absolve or punish them. Do whatever you need for the tree you're trying to max out. Just make sure to absolve the ones mentioned in the other achievements.

Find all 3 Beatrice stones

Locations: (Can a new player using this guide confirm these 3 locations please??)
-The hallway where you push Charon in the abyss has a a demon door to the right. Do not go through it yet, but pass Charon's head further down the hallway and you'll see a demon dog with a relic and an orange fountain containing a Beatrice stone.

This one is correct.

-Lust: Below the path where you need to change direction of the electricity. Drop down between the second and third statue on your right.

It's not between the second and the third statue but between the third and the fourth.

Havent's got to the third yet.

Grow the fuck up.

Its a day BEFORE release of this game in the UK. You know what that means? A lot of people have it legitimately.

Either prove he got it illegal or grow the hell up.

Corrected some mistakes, added confirmed information and I'm nearly done with my second playthrough, so I'll be typing out the collectible guide tomorrow, although it has some items missing still... Gonna try and piece together loose bits of info on the web to determine what exactly I'm missing.

Going to bed now, after two full playthroughs in one day, I've seen enough hell for now... :-)

How would rate the difficulty in 1000/1000 the game? Also, how long would you estimate?

It's a 3/10. Very easy game. Difficulty doesn't affect, so that's good for Gates of Hell achievement. The 666 combo is done during Malebolge as said in the forums. Just have to complete the game twice and a little bit to maximize stats. Collecting shouldn't be a problem using a guide. No more than 12-15 hours playing by yourself first and with guide on a second playthrough in normal difficulty.

Nuh uh!!!! People here in Australia including me got the game on 02/02 (Tuesday). I didn't have the spare time to finish the game straight away though so congrats on making the guide first lol
