Sonic Free Riders is a racing game, utilizing the Kinect camera. There is a mix of hoverboards and bikes to choose from. The game has a steep learning curve and requires plenty of patience, as it can occassionally suffer from unresponsive controls and inexplicable pausing.

Introduction:

Sonic Free Riders main attraction is the World Grand Prix mode. There are 43 missions, which test your ability to use different gears and characters. They are generally easy to pass, but (some) can be difficult to master.

Step One: Tutorial

The game features an extensive tutorial, which will teach you all you need to know about racing in Sonic Free Riders. Upon starting the game, run through all of the available tutorial levels, making sure to pass them, then buy a bike from the shop. You need the bike to unlock the last set of tutorials. Once you've completed the bike tutorial, you'll be ready to tackle the World Grand Prix.

Step Two: World Grand Prix

This will prove to be the most difficult part of the game. You need to complete all 43 missions with an S rank. In the beginning, you will only have access to Team Heroes and Team Babylon's missions. When you're finished their missions, you will unlock Team Dark and Team Rose. Finally, after completing Team Dark's and Team Rose's missions, you will unlock the Final Race (which is actually 3 races). If the mission involves the use of a gear part: a grind challenge for example, you will need to run through the course perfectly, hitting every rail possible, in order to be awarded an S ranking.

Step Three: Time Trial

Play time trial mode on each of the 16 courses, making sure to beat the record on all of them. Whilst doing this, you'll want to get an "unbelievable" start dash and also an X rank trick on every course. You need to be online for the "Debut License" achievement, which tasks you with uploading a time.

Step Four: Damage Survival Mode

Play damage survival mode on each of the 16 courses. You do not need to win, simply complete the "race". In the interest of being efficient, you should try to get the "Survival King" achievement, which requires you to gain 150 points or more and win.

Step Five: Ring Collection Mode

Play ring collection mode on each of the 16 courses. You do not need to win, simply complete the "race". In the interest of being efficient, you should try to get the "Ring King" achievement, which requires you to gain 400 rings or more and win.

Step Six: Normal Races

Play normal race mode on any track. Win with every character (17 including your avatar) using their gear. Also, for one of the races, do not use a kick dash and win. This will unlock "Technical King".

Step Seven: Relay/Tag Races

Whilst this is essentially a two player mode, you can trick the game into allowing you to race by yourself. When choosing characters, select yours, then for the second player, exit out of the Kinects view on the right. Walk back in and it will think you're a new player. Choose your character and start the race.

If you have a friend who will help, just have them play normally with you.

You need to complete all 16 courses in both relay and tag mode. You are not required to win, only finish the race.

Step Seven: Gear Master

You'll need to visit the shop and buy all the gears. If you do not have enough rings, play ring collection mode until you do. Once you do, you're going to return to normal race mode and win using every store bought gear. After this, choose Sonic and his Chaos Emeralds gear. Win and the "Gear Master" achievement is yours.

Step Eight: Miscellaneous

Refer to the achievement guide for information on any achievements you may have missed. Also, see this post for a helpful checklist.

Conclusion:

The achievement list is decent, though it can become quite tedious. If you can get past the inconsistent controls, there is plenty of fun to be had with the game. Get ready to sweat, a lot!

Achievement Guide
Rocket Star15
You've used 30 or more Soda Rockets! Shake it, shake it, baby!

Soda rockets only appear in normal race mode. They will be randomly awarded when riding over item boxes, whilst at the back of the field. Usually between 8th-12th. To use a soda rocket, put your hand
(whichever the can is in) to the side and shake it up and down. It will eventually explode, you'll sit on top of it and get a massive boost. Use the soda rocket 30 times to unlock the achievement.

Welcome License10
You've cleared the Board Gear Basics Tutorial! You're a true rider now.

Upon starting the game, you will be greeted with the tutorial. Complete the Board Gear Basics tutorial to be awarded the achievement. The Board Gear Basics tutorial includes the following lessons:

*Auto Acceleration
*Cornering
*Catching
*Jumping
*Mini Race
*Charging and Air Tricks
*Raising Air Trick Ranks
*Hairpin Air Tricks
*Mini Race
*The Kick Dash
*The Air System
*Items
*Mini Race

If you skip the tutorial, you can go back to it later on, by choosing offline mode at the main menu and then tutorial.

First License15
You took 1st in a Normal Race! The real race starts now!

Choose offline mode from the main menu, then free race. When the rules screen comes up, select normal race mode. You can race with any character, on any track. I suggest Rocky Ridge Standard, as I find it the easiest to win. Finish the race in first place, to unlock this achievement.

Debut License15
You've uploaded your first record to the leaderboards! Aim to be world's best!

First, you need to be connected to Xbox Live. Next, go to offline mode then time trial. Choose any track, any character. Complete the three laps and you'll be awarded the achievement.

Offline Champ License15
You've taken 1st in 16 offline Normal Races! You're now amongst the top echelon of riders!

Choose offline Mode, then free Race. When the rules selection screen comes up, select normal race mode.
This can be done on the same track, over and over, if you wish. One of the shortest (and easiest) tracks is Rocky Ridge Standard. Whichever track (s) you choose, try to take the appropriate gear parts. If there are a lot of hoops that you can fly through, you want the "Air" gear part. If there are a lot of rails, you want the "Grind" gear part.

After winning a race, I recommend you change characters, as this will allow you to make progress towards the "Character Master" achievement.

Rich King15
You've collected 10,000 Rings or more! Time to go shopping!

Do not buy anything until you have the 10,000 rings! You need to have 10,000 on you, it's not cumulative. The quickest way to gain rings, is to play the ring collection mode. You can get 300-500 rings on a good run.

You can see how many rings you have, by selecting Shop on the main menu. Your rings are displayed in the bottom left hand corner.

Bomb-Happy15
You've launched 30 or more Target Torpedoes at your rivals! Pretty impressive throwing arm there!

Target torpedoes will appear in normal race mode, ring collection mode and damage survival mode. They're most prevalent in damage survival mode though, so it is your best option when going for this achievement. They will be awarded randomly, when riding over item boxes, between 2nd-12th place. To use a target torpedo, pretend you're throwing an American football. Put your arm beside your head, pull it back, then push it forward. You will launch the torpedo, which will explode upon contact with an opponent. Use the target torpedo 30 times to unlock this achievement.

Punchout15
You've attacked your rivals 30 times or more with a Bowling Strike! Nice bowling!

The bowling ball will appear in normal race mode, ring collection mode and damage survival mode.
It is a very common item. Since damage survival mode is focused on items, it's the best option. The bowling ball item will appear anywhere in the pack, except 1st. To use the bowling ball, put your arm down by your side, pull it back, then push it forward. Like you were bowling in real life. It will roll and injure anyone it makes contact with, including you! Use the bowling ball 30 times to unlock this achievement.

Masters15
You've attacked your rivals 30 times or more with a Tee Shot! Fore!

The tee shot item only appears in normal race mode. It is awarded randomly, to those at the back of the pack between 10th-12th. To use the tee shot item, put both of your arms together beside you, pull back, then swing forward. It is a golf swing action. The ball will fly forth, crushing the character in first place. Use the tee shot item 30 times, to unlock this achievement.

Note- Must be on a board, not a bike.

Troublemaker15
You've attacked your rivals 30 times or more with Octo-Ink! Squeegee, anybody?

Play normal race mode. The octo-ink item appears only when at the front of the pack, 4th and higher. If you're in first, there is a 50/50 chance that you'll get this item, so try to remain in the lead. To use the octo-ink item, put your arm out to the side, then pull it directly down, as if you are chopping something. It will squirt ink on the ground. If your opponent runs over it, it will slow them down and obstruct their view. Use the octo-ink item 30 times to unlock this achievement.

Clutch Shooter15
You've attacked your rivals with 30 or more Free Throws! Nice shot!

Play normal race mode. The free throw item only appears at the back of the pack, between 10th-12th. To use the free throw item, put your hands above your head and push them forward, as if you're shooting a basketball. It will crush the rider in first. Use the free throw item 30 times, to unlock this achievement.

Note- Must be on a bike, not a board.

Ringmaker15
You've used 30 or more Ring Cans! Hurry to the Shop as soon as you save up some Rings!

Play normal race mode. Ring cans only appear when at the front of the pack, 4th and higher.
If you're in first, there is a 50/50 chance that you'll get this item, so try to remain in the lead. To use a ring can, put your arm out to the side and shake it up and down, in the same fashion as the soda rocket item. Rings will fly out of the can, which you can collect, to upgrade your board/bike. Use the ring can 30 times to unlock this achievement.

Boost Star15
You've used 30 or more Octo-Boosts! Those Blue Octopi love you!

Octo-boosts will only appear in normal race mode. They are awarded to players between 2nd-10th, though they're most common in the middle of the pack. To use an octo-boost, put your arm out to the side and pull it straight down. Same as the octo-ink item. You will be propelled forward as fire shoots out of the octopus. Use 30 octo-boosts to unlock this achievement.

Grand Prix License30
You've cleared the World Grand Prix! Congratulations on your victory!

From the main menu, choose offline mode, then World Grand Prix. To unlock this achievement, you must complete all 43 missions.

Team Heroes- 10 missions
Team Babylon- 10 missions

Completing the above will unlock Team Dark's and Team Rose's missions.

Team Dark- 10 missions
Team Rose- 10 missions

Completing Team Heroes, Babylon, Dark, and Rose's missions will unlock the Final Race.

Final Race- 3 missions.

You only need to pass for this achievement, so the rank you get doesn't matter.

Tag License30
You've raced every course in Tag Race! Aim for a new world record with your perfect partner!

If you have a friend, select offline mode, free race, then tag. Race on each of the 16 courses, finishing in any position, to unlock this achievement.

If you do not have someone to play with, you can do this by yourself. Do the same as above, but when you get to the character select screen, choose your character and then exit out of the Kinect's view, on the right. Walk back in and you will be able to play as both players.

Note- To unlock all of the courses, you'll need to complete the World Grand Prix.

Relay License30
You've raced every course in Relay Race! Aim for a new world record with your outstanding teamwork!

If you have a friend, select offline mode, free race, then relay.

Tutorial License15
You've cleared every Tutorial topic! You have mastered every Gear technique!

There are three tutorial sections, Board Gear Basics, Board Gear Techniques and Bike Gear. Refer to "Welcome License" for information on the Board Gear Basics tutorial.

Board Gear Techniques includes the following lessons:

*Rail Grinding
*Air Riding
*Power Skill
*Start Bonus

Trick King20
You've scored an X-rank trick on every standard course! You're a trick pro!

You must perform an X rank trick on every standard course. When selecting a course, it will either say "standard" or "expert". There are 8 standard courses. An X rank will only be awarded when going over a normal kicker. You can perform an X rank trick on either a board or a bike. On a board, you must do a 360 degree jump. On a bike, you must jump and raise your hands in the air. In both cases, you want to crouch very low before jumping, to get maximum height. An "X" will pop up on the screen if you manage an X rank trick.

This is what a normal kicker looks like:

Time trial or normal race are the best modes for this achievement.

Expert Trick King30
You've scored an X-rank trick on every expert course! You're a trick master!

Refer to "Trick King" for information on X rank tricks. There are 8 expert courses. Perform an X rank trick on all of them to be awarded this achievement.

Character Master40
You've placed 1st with every character! You've perfected each characters' techniques!

First, you need to unlock all of the characters. This means you'll need to completely finish the World Grand Prix, before attempting this achievement. Once you have access to everybody, win a normal race with each of them. There are 17 playable characters in the game. Refer to the list below:

*Sonic
*Tails
*Knuckles
*Jet
*Wave
*Storm
*Amy
*Cream
*Vector
*Shadow
*Rouge
*E-10000 G
*Silver
*Blaze
*Eggman
*Metal Sonic
*Avatar

Gear Master50
You've placed 1st with every Gear! You riding technique is unparalleled!

Refer to "Gear Collector" for information on unlocking all of the gears. Each character has their own specific gear that they ride, so you will need to win with each of them. You will also need to win with every gear in the store. This will most likely be the last achievement you obtain, as there are 38 gears and you need to do plenty of work to unlock them.

For a list of gears, see here. Only normal race mode counts.

Charred King10
You've taken damage from over 30 Target Torpedoes! Ouch!

Play damage survival mode. You want to get yourself to the lead, so that you're in the firing line of the target torpedoes. They cannot be thrown backwards! You will see a targeting reticule surrounding your character, when you are about to get hit by a target torpedo. Get hit 30 times to unlock this achievement.

Gutter King10
You've taken damage from 30 or more Bowling Strikes! Somebody's got it out for you!

Play damage survival mode. Bowling balls will ricochet off walls, so you can be anywhere in the pack in order to be hit by one. You can even hit yourself! If you see a stationary bowling ball, or a rolling one, run into it. Take damage from 30 of them to be awarded this achievement.

Dash King40
You've got an UNBELIEVABLE Start Dash on every course! No one can keep up with your amazing dashes!

At the beginning of any race (Damage/Ring/Normal/TT/Etc.) there will be an electric gate in front of you and a five second countdown. You need to kick dash and pass the starting line as close to the end of the countdown as possible. The time when you should kick dash will differ between characters. Generally one second for light characters, two seconds for heavy. Watch the time, kick dash, if it doesn't say "Unbelievable" restart until it does. You need to get an "Unbelievable" start dash on each of the 16 courses.

Jolt King10
The start line's stopped you dead in your tracks over 30 times! Shocking!

At the beginning of any race (Damage/Ring/Normal/TT/Etc.) there will be an electric gate in front of you and a five second countdown. When it expires, the gate disappears. If you boost before the gate disappears, you will run into it and receive a jolt. Stopping you dead in your tracks. Do this 30 times to unlock the achievement.

Survival King15
You took 1st in a Damage Survival race with 150 or more points! Impressive battle technique!

Start a damage survival race on a narrow course, such as Forgotten Tomb. Each hit you get on an enemy is worth 10 points, so you'll need to hit them 15 times for this achievement. Bowling balls are great, as they can hit many opponents at once. Try to grab a bowling ball, drop back in the field then launch it into them. 150 points is actually quite easy to achieve.

Ring King40
You've finished with 400 Rings or more in Ring Collection mode! You're a true Ring tycoon!

Start a ring collection race. You're going to want to play on a course where you know all the shortcuts. I like Forgotten Tomb, as the shortcuts are obvious (green poles). The most important thing is to crouch very low before jumps, to charge, then jump high. You'll get a lot of your rings by doing this, as there is usually a solid ring with either 10, 30 or 50 written on it. If you grab it, that amount is added to your total. You want to lead the race from the beginning so that your opponents do not grab the rings before you get the chance. Keep in mind that you get a bonus for finishing the lap in a high position. First position gets you 30 rings, second 20 and third 10.

Collect 400 rings in one ring collection race to unlock this achievement.

Technical King30
You've placed 1st without kick dashing! That's some undisputable skill!

I suggest you do this after unlocking the Chaos Emeralds gear (S-Rank all World Grand Prix missions). If you collect 30 rings, Sonic (the only character who can use the gear) will transform into Super Sonic. He will get a speed boost which will last until you kick dash, so you will essentially have the speed boost for the whole race, if you're going for this achievement. Do not switch stance at all during the race, as occasionally the game will mistake this for a kick dash. Choose a course that you're comfortable with.

It is possible to do it without the Chaos Emeralds gear, but much harder. You'll need to hit every speed boost pad and make your way around the track flawlessly. This must be done in normal race mode.

*Note, I am missing one gear. I can't figure out what it is, so if you have a gear that isn't on this list, please tell me.

EDIT- This is the complete list. You need to win on 37 different gears. If you're male, the female avatar gear will be unlocked automatically but you do not need to win a race on it. You can't actually use it at all. Obviously the same applies in reverse. If you're female, you can't use the males gear.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm still unsure about the time trial achievements, don't know what to do with them. It's going to be hard to explain the hidden paths without pictures. Tbh, for most of the courses, you can get away with taking the normal route. I will say this, the "Potential" gear seems to be the best for these achievements. I generally take the grind part and air part when doing time trials.

I haven't played this game for the past couple of weeks, as I was a bit burnt out on it. Will get back into it and update the gears list when I figure out what it is I am missing.

Just wondering, i plan on picking up the game this week, but how does the Tag License achievement work? Are there two players on screen? If you don't see two players does the game start up after the "second" player picks their character?

When you select Tag Race, it will take you to the character select screen. Player one chooses, then it will ask player two to choose. You walk out of the Kinect's view, then back in to make it think you're a new player. Choose the second players character and board, start the race. During the race, you and your partner are tethered together. This makes the races take quite a long time to complete, as you can't get very far ahead of the second player.

Relay races are much quicker and easier when trying to do them solo, as you can race normally. Once you've completed a lap, get out of the Kinect's view and back in to start the second lap. Obviously it is better if you can find someone else to play with you, but it's not too bad doing it on your own.

Hope this helps.

great guide. thanks a lot for your work. I think important addition is to say for every achievement requiring normal races that you can set up race for only 1 lap. This makes things much faster
