L.A. Noire FAQ

I'm bored, thought I'd put a FAQ together for anyone with questions. I plan on adding a bit more onto this eventually, but I think it will answer plenty of questions for now.

Q: What is L.A. Noire?

A: L.A. Noire is an open world detective based video game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. The game was initially developed to be PS3 only, but the 360 will be receiving a copy as well.

Q: When does L.A. Noire come out?

A: May 17th, 2011 for North America, May 20th, 2011 for Europe.

Q: How many disks does L.A. Noire have?

A: L.A. Noire comes on 3 disks. R* claimed that the target was to fit the entire game on a single Blue-Ray disk (25 GB), which they barely did.

Q: How many times will I have to switch disks throughout?

A: You only have to switch disks twice throughout the story. The entire city is accessible from one disk, but you must change disks to continue the story.

Q: Do I have to install each disk to my Hard Drive?

A: Yes. Each disk has separate data. You cannot install one disk and play another. Installing all of the disks takes up roughly 20 GB total.

Q: Who do I play as in L.A. Noire?

A: You play as Cole Phelps, a new police officer in the LAPD who joined the force to right the wrongs he committed during WWII. during the game you rise through the ranks solving cases, look for clues and interrogate suspects.

Q: What is the setting of L.A. Noire?

A: L.A. Noire is set in the "perfectly re-created" 1947 Post WWII Los Angeles. At the height of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Los Angeles is a city of crime, sex and moral corruption; a perfect place to solve some crimes

Q: Why's it called L.A. Noire?

A: Well, the L.A. part is obvious, but the Noire part comes from film noir, a style in the '40s and '50s that used similar visual styles and themes of crime and corruption. they were often shot in low light, black and white footage that evolved from German Expressionist cinematography. The term film noir is also french for "black film", referred to as a movie with darker themes and style.

Q: Is this game free roam?

A: Yes. You're free to explore Los Angeles as you please.

Q: Since this is a R* game, does this mean I can go on a murderous rampage?

A: NO. You cannot murder innocent civilians in this game. You're being forced to be a good cop in this game. If you kill civilians through any means you will fail the mission after a number of deaths.

Q: What's the big draw of this game?

A: Undoubtedly, the reason L.A. Noire is recieving such attention is the new MotionScan technology used to render the faces of characters in game. It utilizes 32 HD cameras to completely surround the actor and capture every minute detail of their expression.

You can see a video on the tech here:

Q: How big is Los Angeles in L.A. Noire?

A: Los Angeles is 8 square miles in L.A. Noire, stretching from east of the LA river to West Hollywood. It is a stunningly accurate re-creation of 1950s Hollywood. Below is a picture of the world map.

Q: Okay...but how big is it in comparison to previous R* games?

In an interview with Team Xbox, a R* official said that it is the largest map that they've made to date.

Quote:
Speaking of the map, it is frigging huge. One of the Rockstar reps, when giving us the demo of the Red Lipstick case, told me it’s the biggest map that Rockstar has ever made, larger than San Andreas, GTA IV or Red Dead.
Full article here: http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/2600/LA-Noire/p2/

Q: Will there be multiplayer?

A: No, L.A. Noire is single player only

Q: How Long is the Game?

A: The storyline in L.A. Noire takes roughly 25-30 hours to finish. One review site claimed it was 30 hours for them to finish the story and 40 to complete everything in the game

Q: So, I'm a cop. How much action am I gonna see?

A: It greatly depends on the case. Many cases can be solved without the use of violence, but there are certainly a few instances where the suspect will resist arrest.

Q: How do the cases unfold in L.A. Noire?

A: Every case starts with a crime scene. You'll have to search for clues and evidence at the scene. When you have proper evidence, you question witnesses and suspects. This is where MotionScan really shows it's stuff. During the interview, you'll have to study the faces of your suspects for dishonesty, sincerity, and other clues. You can match their testimony with evidence you've gathered and go from there.

You have 3 ways of responding to a testimony: Truth, Doubt, or Lie. Truth will assume that the suspect is telling the truth. Doubt will show that you're not buying the suspect's story and could force them to drop the act, should they be lying. And calling them out on a lie (you have to have appropriate evidence to do so) to change the direction of the case. If you accuse of question someone wrongfully, it can cut you off from information that may be vital to solving the case properly. Correct assumptions can branch off into new leads to investigate.

Q: Is Cole Phelps upgradable in any ways?

A: If you properly interrogate and solve crimes effectively, you'll move up in the ranks of the LAPD faster and receive Intuition points. These can highlight evidence at a crime scene or remove questions that will go nowhere during an interrogation

Q: Any unlockables in any way?

A: Yes, there are multiple outfits that you can have Cole Phelps wear in the game. To access them, go to Pause Menu, then Outfits and select the one that you want.

List of known outfits at the moment: http://www.videogamesblogger.com/201...ox-360-ps3.htm

Q: Can you solve street crimes in the game?

A: Yes, you can tackle unassigned cases in the game, such as stopping robberies in progress and running down a purse snatcher. There are up to 40 unassigned cases in L.A. Noire.

Q: Do I have to wait in between cases?

A: No, once you finish a case you are graded on your performance and assigned a new case.

Q: Are there any Pre-Order bonuses for this game?

A: Yes. you can read about them HERE

Do you know if the 8 miles in the game are bigger or smaller than GTA and RDR maps?

Bigger than San Andreas? The map doesn't look that way..
Following a quick Wikipedia search, San Andreas is 13.9 sq. miles. Whilst this is 8?
R* giving us a bit of porkies there?

San Andreas was a huge game, most of the map was either barren desert or pointless trees in a forest.

This is probably the best place to ask this; are there any avatar awards?

I would count on it, and I'm basing that off RDR and its avatar awards. I mean before that really most games a year or so ago didn't offer avvy rewards at all. So I would lean towards yes.

The game is roughly 15-20 hours storyline wise. The added side missions and collectibles make it maybe 25-30 hours. Also you may want to mention that the game isn't technically free roam. You can free roam after you complete all the cases in a certain chapter, but it's not like Red Dead, or GTA in that aspect.

No Avatar Awards for those wondering.

I hope you're not right about the lack of free roam, that's what makes R* games awesome. You've gotta love just going around pointlessly at your own pace, just like in GTA IV and RDR.

I got a question that I would like an answer to. It's probably a dumb question, but something I haven't figured out yet. How in the hell do you change outfits? The only one I have is the one you get from signing into the social club, but still I haven't figured out how to change into it. Is there a place in game to do it? Or do you do it from the marketplace? I have no idea how the hell to do it. -_-

Also, I'm on my 2nd traffic case, so I figured by now I would be able to since I'm a detective and in suits. Anyways...any help is appreciated.

Yeah. Easiest method would probably be to install each disk as you go if you're worried about space.

Whats the best way to tell if someone is lieing or to just say doubt, because sometimes I've said they were lieing and i selected evidence that was completely relevant and it still said I got the question wrong...

I think being told to buy two suits is the prompt so say you can pause the game and change into something more comfortable.

I'm going to ask it here to save forum space and maybe less people will laugh at me.

Searched the forums, but can't see anything.

How do I free roam? Now I know you're always free roaming, but you're always going from case from case you never get to select when you actually want to start them.

I've just made it to homicide and I briefly saw the message about it in the top corner. But I didn't get to read it all before it vanished. So how do I simply free roam with it effecting my case rating with crashes etc?

You can't free-roam during cases. You have to go to the case menu on the main menu (when you first turn the game on). After each case desk you complete, you get the ability to free-roam in each of them (except for Patrol).

Example: Complete all cases in Traffic, then go to Cases on the main menu. Select the "Traffic Desk" folder, then scroll to the bottom. You'll find a selection titled "Streets of L.A. (Free Roam)".
