Achievement Guide & Roadmap

Rights of use:

Don't care who uses this for what website. All I ask is for credit along with everyone else who helps.

Info:

  • There will be a few spoilers. Most are minor though.
  • Achievements are in order for when the earliest they can unlock.
  • Help is greatly appreciated.
  • Any suggestions on how to organize this guide is also appreciated.
Credits: KriugerisLT, Shulamm, Predni, Cbalu V2, Vytenis, TWest72, II OE II, Osakamitsu, PowerPyx

Overview:

Estimated achievement difficulty: 4/10
Offline: 40 [1000
]
Online: 0
Approximate time: 25 Hours
Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 1 + Case select
Missable achievements: None since you can use case select.

Roadmap:

Step 1: Five Star Run
On your first playthrough you will want to get a 5 star rating for every case for the "Shamus To The Stars" achievement. To earn a 5 star rating you must solve every case by finding almost every clue and correctly branching all questions. It is possible to miss 1 or 2 questions or clues and still get a 5 star.

The other factor that effect your rating is penalties, which has three categories: Vehicle damage, Civilian injuries and city damage. You can avoid most penalties by having your partner drive and fast travel you everywhere you need to go. While doing 5 star run I will list the misc. achievements you can unlock in order in the guide.

Step 2: Street crime and misc. achievement mop up.

You can actually do these achievements during your five star run but since street crimes involve shootouts, car chases ect. it will increase the chances of you getting penalized and hurting our 5 star rating. Instead wait until you are promoted and each time you will unlock a free roam under the cases folder on the case desk from the main menu.

Step 3: Collectables.

While doing cases you will naturally come across some collectables, mainly newspapers and landmarks. Aside from those don't bother hunting for film reels and cars until you have done everything else in the game as all the searching will increase chances for penalties.

Conclusion:
Not a hard game to get the full 1000 just very time consuming.

Police Academy 15
Complete all cases on the Patrol desk.

Story related and cannot be missed. Should be your first achievement.

One For The File 15
Find and inspect a clue as an LAPD Detective or Investigator.

Can't be missed. "The Driver's Seat." should be the first case you get this achievement.

Asphalt Jungle 15
Chase down and tackle a fleeing suspect on foot as an LAPD Detective.

When chasing a fleeing suspect in a case or street crime if you are close enough it will give you the option to tackle him to the ground. When you are close enough a message will appear and you have to mash A for a few seconds to sprint to him and tackle him.

There are many opportunities in both cases and street crimes to get this but I personally got it on the street crime "Cosmic Rays" during the case "The Driver's Seat." Try not to get stuck or fall behind and when he causes a traffic accident he will stop for a few seconds. If you kept up with him to this point you will be able to close the gap and get the option to tackle him as he starts running again.

Alternate method video:

The Plot Thickens 15
Find and solve an inspection puzzle.

You will get this on the case "The Driver's Seat." Once you get to the Margaret Black's house there will be a broken heater outside the house by the kitchen window. Put the pieces back together and the achievement will unlock. If you actually need help solving it use the "Instaheat Flyer" clue for reference.

The Hunch 30
Use four intuition points in a single interview session, correctly branching each question.

You can earn up to five intuition points as you rank up and can check how many you have in your notebook. When you replay a case you will also start with five intuition points.

Once you have four points then go interview a person where you will ask at least four questions. When you get to choose truth, doubt or lie you can use an intuition point to either remove an option or check what percent the community chose for each choice. Choose anyone you like just make sure to use four points and answer correctly.

I personally did this when I interviewed Margaret Black on the case "The Driver's Seat." There are many cases to get this achievement though.

The Straight Dope 15
Use evidence to prove a lie as an LAPD Detective or Investigator.

Many places to get this but the first opportunity will be on the case "The Driver's Seat." When asking the question "Photograph signed Nicole" select lie and choose concealed message from your evidence
.

The Third Degree 15
Correctly branch every question in every interview in a single story case.

You must correctly branch (Truth, Doubt, Lie) every question in all interviews in a single case. You can tell you got it right by checking if there is a check mark next to the question when you cross it out in your notebook. Here is every correct answer for "The Driver's Seat."

Nate Wilkey Questions:
Purpose at scene - Truth
Knowledge of Adrian Black - Truth
Contents of wallet - Doubt
Bloodstained pipe find found - Truth

Margaret Black Questions:

Slaughterhouse receipt - True
Cavanagh's bar matchbook - True
Location of Adrian black - True
Stenzel glasses case - True
Photograph signed Nicole - Lie, select concealed message.
Alibi for Mrs. Black - True

Frank Morgan Questions:
Link to abandoned car - Lie, select receipt for live hog.
Location of Adrian Black - Doubt

Golden Boy 15
Clear a case finding every clue as an LAPD Detective or Investigator.

Your first chance to get this will be on the case "The Driver's Seat." There are 14 clues total you need to find and it will pop when the case is solved:

R.E Freight Depot: 6
Abandoned vehicle - Obtained automatically after the first scene ends.
Blood splashes - Talk to officer at the scene.
Receipt for live hog - check trunk of blue car.
Wallet - Check by the glasses at the yellow "A" evidence square.
Glasses - Check by the wallet at the yellow "A" evidence square.
Bloody Pipe - Check by the glasses at the yellow "B" evidence square.
*Make sure to examine the blood in the car for the swine blood clue to appear later*

Margaret Black's house: 7
Cavanagh's matchbook - On dining room table.
Instaheat flyer - On the kitchen table.
Instaheat receipt - On the kitchen table.
Glasses case - On the dresser in Adrian Black's room.
Concealed message - On the dresser in Adrian Black's room.
Train ticket - In the closet in Adrian Black's room.
Water heater - Complete the water heater clue puzzle outside.

Cavanagh's Bar
: 1
Swine Blood: After talking to Frank at Cavanagh's Bar, head back to the Freight Depot and the dispatch should notify you that the blood found in the car is not human. Do not fast travel.

The Up And Up 30
Complete a story case with a five star rating.
See "Shamus To The Stars"

Shamus To The Stars
80
Complete all story cases with a five star rating.

To get a 5 star rating in a case you will need to branch almost all questions correctly, find nearly all clues and don't rack up too much money in penalties. Penalties include city damage, civilians injured/killed, and vehicle damage.

Missing 1 or 2 questions or clues
with a little penalty fine will still get a 5 star rating. Also using intuition points does NOT hurt your rating. You can check which cases you got a 5 star rating on by going to cases in the main menu.

100% Case guide with all clues and questions (DLC too).

A Cop On Every Corner
15
Complete a single street crime case.

See "The Long Arm Of The Law."

Johnny On The Spot 30
Respond to 20 street crime cases.
See "The Long Arm Of The Law."

The Long Arm Of The Law 30
Complete all street crime cases.

While driving a police vehicle around the city you will occasionally get a message on the radio about a crime in progress. Press A to respond and the AOL yellow person icon will appear on the map to mark the location. These street crimes vary from shootouts, hostage rescues, and chasing suspects. There are 40 in total.
It is best to do this in free roam from each case folder from the main menu since street crimes only appear in certain case folders. You will get a message once you have finished all street crimes from a case folder and can move to the next one.

Guide to all street crimes

Public Menace 30
Rack up $47,000 in penalties during a single story case.

At the end of a case you get a rating page on how well you did. On that page it will show how much money in penalties you have racked up. There are three categories for penalties: Vehicle damage, civilian casualties, and city damage.

Destroying Vehicles seem to be worth the most money, around 1k each, so before finishing a case completely wreck at least 50-60 cars and it should be enough. Then finish the case. This cannot be done on any case from the patrol desk either, so don't attempt until you are on the case "The Driver's Seat" at the earliest.

Thread with alt. methods

Stab-Rite 15
At Ray's Cafe, find the bloodstained knife on your first sweep of the crime scene.

At the crime scene in the case “A Marriage Made In Heaven” make sure to get the bloody knife clue in trash can in the alley to the left of the Ray’s Cafe before leaving to another location. The achievement will unlock when you have to go see the coroner at the morgue.

Not So Hasty 15
Stop a fleeing suspect with a warning shot as an LAPD Detective.

When chasing a suspect you sometimes have the option to fire a warning shot in the air to make them stop. To do this you must aim your pistol at the suspect. When you do a circular meter will appear and begin to build. You must keep your gun pointed at him for a few seconds until it fills to fire the shot. If you lose sight of him the meter will go down.

I got this achievement on the case “A Marriage Made In Heaven.” When you chase Leroy Sabo keep up with him and at one point he will run down an alleyway in a straight line. This is your chance to keep the gun on him and fire a warning shot. The achievement will unlock at the end of the case.

If you don't get it here there are many other opportunities in other cases and street crimes to get it.

Video:

The Shadow 15
Tail a suspect without being spotted, in a single case.

In the case "The Fallen Idol" after leaving the hospital you will see June Ballard leaving and are tasked to follow her by car. Keep your distance and follow her to a cafe. If you're too close the car icon on the map will flash indicating you to slow down. Also driving recklessly will make it flash as well. Once you're at the cafe you need to get in without her noticing you. When she is on the phone casually walk inside and take a seat at the booth on the left with the newspaper. The achievement will then unlock.

This achievement is unmissable unless you choose to skip the event. If you get spotted you can retry and the achievement will still unlock once beaten.

Keep A Lid On It 15
Complete a brawl without losing your hat as an LAPD Detective or Investigator.

In the case "The Fallen Idol" after tailing June to the cafe you will have drive quickly to a hotel to stop two people from hurting someone by fighting them with your partner. Do not let your partner drive/fast travel or you will miss them and it will save. Once the fight starts you can't get hit once or your hat will fall off so block often and pick your shots. If your partner wins it'll make the fight much easier. If he loses you might want to consider quitting to menu then select resume to try again.

If you don't get it here there are many other opportunities to get this in other cases and in street crimes.

Traffic Stop 15
Disable a suspect vehicle with help from your partner.

On the case "The Fallen Idol" after you interview Marlon Hopgood at the studio you will get a scene. After the scene you will have two cars shooting at you. Your partner will shoot back at them from the passenger window. Position yourself where he has a shot at the wheels of the car and he will shoot them out and disable the car.

If you don't get it here there are many more opportunities during cases and street crimes to get this.

Paved With Good Intentions 15
Complete all cases on the Traffic desk.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Wooden Overcoats 30
Bring down a total of 30 bad guys with head shots.

Self explanatory. If you do all the street crimes you will have more than enough bad guys to get this.

Lead Foot 15
Keep the needle above 80mph for more than ten seconds while driving.

For this I used the new police car you get when you are promoted to homicide in "The Red Lipstick Murder." I then went to 5th Street, located near the Pershing Square landmark, and started on the far West of 5th Street and drove East. To my knowledge there is no way to check how fast you are going but there are plenty of dips on this road to increase speed. Don't make any hard turns to avoid cars and you should get it shortly.

Round Heels 15
At the Bamba Club, get Dick McColl to give up the license plate of Celine Henry's male companion.

On the case "The Red Lipstick Murder" you will go to the bar to interview Dick McColl at the Bamba Club. When you ask the question "Suspect seen with victim" choose truth and he will give you the license plate number.

Auto Enthusiast 15
Drive 5 different vehicles.
See "Auto Fanatic"

Auto Collector 15
Drive 40 different vehicles.
See "Auto Fanatic"

Auto Fanatic 30
Drive every vehicle in the city.

There are 95 different vehicles in the city. 15 of them are unlocked as you rank up and a question mark symbol will appear on your map showing where they are. Here's a guide with pictures and videos and a general location of all the cars. Please note that the locations are not always exact and can require some luck as well. You can check which ones you are missing through the "Extras" section in the main menu.

Vehicle location guide.

The Simple Art Of Murder 15
Complete all cases on the Homicide desk.
Story related and cannot be missed.

The Moose 15
Follow Candy Edwards without using cover or incognito, except when starting or picking up the tail.

On the case "The Set Up" You get the follow scene after staking out Candy's apartment. Simply keep your distance at maximum. Walk slowly, don't run. If the icon flashes then run a couple of steps and walk again. Just keep your distance and walk slowly and u will be fine. You can only use incognito at the beginning when she is leaving her apartment. Do not take cover (RB) at any time either.

The Fighting Sixth 15
At the Bus Shooting, talk Felix Alvarro into giving up the Marines involved in the Coolridge heist.

During the case "Manifest Destiny" When questioning Felix Alvarro after the bus shooting event use these answers:

The max rank is 20 and you should reach it before you finish the story. You earn points for doing street crimes, finding landmarks, film reels, branching interviews correctly and solving cases.

Miles On The Clock 15
Drive more than 194.7 miles.

Self explanatory. Get any vehicle, preferably a fast one, and drive around the city. Letting your partner drive does not count so try to do some driving in cases and collectable hunting if you don't want to mindlessly drive in free roam.

Magpie 80
Find and inspect 95% of all clues.

There are 242 total clues in the game so you will need 230 to get this achievement. Should come naturally as you're trying to get 5 stars on each case.

If you don't change any settings in the options menu then you will hear a chime every time you are near a clue. You can also use intuition points to show all clues, then restart to save the point and find them again. When you finish a case it will tell you the total amount of clues there are as well. Also note that only clues where the message "New Clue" pops up count. If it just gets updated or no message appears at all then it does not count towards the achievement.

100% Case guide with all clues and questions (DLC too).

Roscoe And Friends 15
Kill at least one bad guy with every gun.

There are 8 guns you will need to kill someone with. Most of them are dropped from bad guys through many cases and street crimes.

  • .44 Magnum - Default gun as a patrol cop. Start the case "Armed and Dangerous." and press LB to drop the shotgun.
  • 12 Gauge Shotgun - Start with it in the case "Armed and Dangerous." Bad guys will drop this as well.
  • Colt .45 - Your default gun as a detective.
  • Thompson SMG - Bad guys from many cases and street crimes will have it. There's a bad guy with one at the final event on the case "The Fallen Idol."
  • Tommy gun (modified thompson with a round drum) - Bad guys from many cases and street crimes will have it. There's a bad guy with one at the final event on the case "The Fallen Idol."
  • M1 Garrand - Bad guys from many cases and street crimes will have it. There's a bad guy with one at the final event on the case "The Fallen Idol."
  • Browning Auto-Rifle - Easily found in the final case as many bad guys will have it. There's also one in the same spot as the flamethrower.
  • Flamethrower - Obtained in the final case at the final event in the sewers. Right before the scene where the water rises you will find a room full of guns. The flamethrower is in there.

Edited it a bit more. Its not something you can actually locate or examine. Once you get to the point where you have to interview Frank at the bar and after the questions and you go to leave you should get the "New Clue" message. If not then don't go to franks apartment or youll get an event that will end the case without getting the clue. Have your partner drive to mrs black's house and it should appear.

Really? I missed one clue and got only 4 stars. I might have been penalized too much but I might have been wrong. If so I apologize. I can edit if others confirm. Since you need 95% though you might as well try to get all the clues. Will edit though

He wasn't lying, per se.

He was mistaken, and even then it's not much of a mistake. It probably works like the 100% achievement on Bully, as in if you find all clues, then you have more room for causing a bit of havoc. Bully did this; if you complete all side missions, you can skip buying some of the clothes, or finding some of the collectibles, as it would add the .xx% for it, in it's place.

So, I'd agree with the guide writer; find all clues to get 5*s, otherwise you will have to do that little extra for the stars.

EDIT: The guide is looking pretty good so far. I won't be using it on my first play through, but may come back to it for the collectibles. However, I would advise changing the Roadmap section of the guide. I'd include an introduction to the game, and a Steps section, saying what to do first, such as complete the story, then what to do 2nd, such as replay cases to 5*, etc.

Also, missable achievements should be none, as you can replay cases, therefore you do not have to start a New Game. The missable achievements section is only for achievements that are a one shot on your playthrough, such as Prince of Persia's "Less than 100 deaths" achievement.

I'm actually pretty sure getting 5 stars has alot more to do with getting all the questions right then the clues. I've pretty much gotten all clues through the game but I haven't gotten 5 stars on alot of stuff because I missed questions.(This is of course assuming my damage is low.)

Yeah, I believe that would also be a contributing factor into the star system.

My reply was only based on prediction, not having the game yet.

EDIT: EliteShadowMan; The font is too big on your screen? On mine, it's smaller than normal.

Guide seems good so far, except i would put your font size a little smaller if you can, it seems to large of font.

Also would be nice not to have spoilers in the achievement guide but i'm not looking at the guide for my first playthrough anyway. Cheers

Black Barney's Gamercard
Hey man, thanks for starting up a guide and roadmap. Given that this is the only one so far, we want it to be great, right? That way no one has to write a better one. Here are two suggestions I'd make to make this one much better:

1) Claiming achievements are missable is a big deal cuz it makes players careful and nervous not to miss them. A missable acheivement is one that, without a well-placed saved game, you would have to start the WHOLE game over to get. Is there any achievements like that in this? If missions are repeatable, then I would say no.

2) It is SO much better to list achievements in order you can get them, that way players can follow your guide like a roadmap without "missing" any. So if you felt like re-ordering your achievement guide, I can tell you with certainty that people will really appreciate it.

People would appreciate it -- but I understand that x360a prefers the Achievements listed in the same order as they are listed in the game.

yes but only in the official listing of the achievements, not the actual achievement guides. Lots of people list them in order obtained and it's super appreciated by readers and users

Out-of-order guides drive me bonkers. I always have to copy them into a Word document and then move all the achievements around to place them in a more chronological order.

Good looking guide so far!

That makes sense. I wasn't offended. It seems that this time, I was mistaken.

Well, I am doing the 'Drivers Seat' case and can't get the swine blood clue to pop up. I have been fast travelling back and forth between the bar, the house and the last destination and nothing has popped up yet. I even drove manually between the house and the last spot a couple times and nadda. Anyone else having this problem and know another way around it?

problem with your guide there are more than the 1000 gamerscore and 40 achievements as the dlc was ship with it, need to update not a standard guide with dlc coming with the game for achievements on there, and you need to update, good job though

Thanks for the guide so quickly! Quick question: are there any achievements that are missable in the sense that you would have to start a completely new game to get them? Or can you get every achievement through mission select once you finish the game? I want to play through the game without a guide to enjoy the story.
