So Which Gundam Series Do I Watch First?

I have an alarming knowledge of Gundam canon simply from playing the DW Gundam games.

It's almost like playing a Gundam Wiki.

If I was going to watch the series for my own entertainment what should I look for and in what order should I watch them?

Cheers,

Az

Well first there are alternate universes and such. The main universe is the Universal Century. but from which Universe to start is a matter of personal opinion. So who's your fav. character. We'll see from there

Mobile Suit Gundam
08th MS Team
Zeta Gundam
ZZ Gundam
War in the Pocket
Stardust Memory
Char's Counterattack
Unicorn Gundam

Turn A Gundam (The "Dark History" actually hints to Universal Century. So it's the last one period.)

I think that's the Universal Century in order.

Alternates are...

Gundam Wing
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
G Gundam
Gundam SEED
Gundam SEED Destiny
00 Gundam
After War X (Not released in the US, but I enjoyed it. I like Garrod Ran, hah. Plus Double X is completely broken in the game.)

I have no idea about these:
F91 Gundam
Victory Gundam

There's probably a lot I'm missing. I'm just going from memory. I say watch the Universal Century ones. They're pretty good. Also, SEED/SEED Destiny have parallels to it. It's like a mix of the original and new stuff in a way, so I enjoyed it.

Wing was the first one I ever saw, so I have close personal ties to it that I just enjoy.

08th MS Team was one of my favorites from Universal Century. It seemed more...human?

Sorry if I missed some. But those are the ones in order, to my knowledge and from memory. Enjoy. =)

I'd say the best ones to start with would be Wing or the Original Mobile Suit Gundam. Both are good overall series, but Wing is a bit more self contained so you don't have to deal as much with overwhelming lumps of canon.

I'd also suggest giving G Gundam a try. It's not a serious show like the rest of them, but it is quite enjoyable for the over the top action and haminess as well as it's "interesting" mobile suit designs:

Theyre part of the Universal Century timeline. After Gundam Unicorn.

Id recommend:

MobileSuit Gundam movies(the entire show in 3 films. cuts out all the useless filler and redoes some scenes.)
Zeta Gundam
08th MS team
Stardust Memories
Char's Counterattack
Gundam Unicorn
G Gundam
Gundam 00 (season 1 only it ends perfectly)
Turn ∀ Gundam

>_> Man, I'm not sure you even CAN find 'em on DVD in europe... I know I tried, without luck. And I mean, ANY of those series.

I'd suggest just torrenting them, which is easy since they're timelessly popular, but that would be illegal, so I won't say anything about that. Even though there's really no other way to get these shows if you live in europe, it would still be immoral and wrong to use a search-engine like torrentz.com to scan several different torrent-sites and easily find what you're looking for. So, y'know, don't do it.

As for where to start, I'd say that the original Mobile Suit Gundam is a great place to start - I think it's often referred to 'Mobile Suit Gundam 0080' these days, just to distinguish. It's chock-full of deliciously-cheesy 80's implications, and worth checking out just for the intro-sequence. But if it doesn't fall in your taste, go for the hot-blooded Mobile Fighter G Gundam, which is about as different from the 'main' Gundam-continuities as you can get. Less philosophy, more PUNCHING THINGS!

Yes, unless you can play region 1 DVDs you're mostly out of luck. Still Wing (alright), SEED (poor), SEED Destiny (worse) and 00 (good) are all readily available on region 2.

Now if you can play region 1; head over to Play.com, type Gundam in the search and you'll get almost everything released in the US. Skip the original TV series and get the movie compilations, then for Zeta Gundam get the series, ZZ hasn't been released here and probably never will be but you won't be missing out on anything skipping it and going to the Char's Counterattack movie to finish the orginal story.

That should keep you busy for a bit.

Yeah, I second 'Go ahead and skip ZZ'... I love the suit, really, and the characters are okay too, but the actual show? Eeeesh. Let's just say that there's a reason why all of the DWG titles have had just 2-4 missions based on Gundam ZZ, as compared to the hefty helping they always grab from 0080 and Zeta - only the last half of the series is ANY good, and not even much at that...

Ah well, at least it had a pretty rockin' intro-tune. Anime ja nai!

You should start with either "Mobile Suit Gundam" or "Wing Gundam".

Mobile Suit Gundam is what started it all.
Wing Gundam is what made Gundam popular in the USA.

Either of those would be a good start. Critically, "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" is regarded as the series of the highest quality. Zeta Gundam occurs after "Mobile Suit Gundam" so you would want to watch those in order.

Play.com sells region 1 versions which are no use to me in the UK.

Amazon.co.uk offers the Mobile Suit Gundam series as a film trilogy in region 2 DVD but they are all from 3rd party sellers based in Canada and the US.

It would suck to throw $ 60.00 at the series and have it delivered and not work.

thats a Nobell Gundam. Bandai made a Model kit for that one. Heres a link to a review of that. http://www.gaijin-gunpla.com/hgfc-nobell-review-74-3/

There are a lot of Gundams that appear only in its Gunpla counterpart. For example theres a 711 RX78 version. 711 convenience store lol!.

Trust me, it's basically impossible to find any of those series in european. I've TRIED. Lots of times. So unless you've got a code-free player, you'll have to seek... alternate methods. >_>

Just a warning, don't give up after watching SEED and SEED Destiny. I found them both to be utterly atrocious. If I could go back and do it all over again I'd skip them completely.

If you go on YouTube they have the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 1 uploaded officially.
A great place to start, then if you want more Gundam you can get Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and the sequel Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny from Amazon UK or Play.com. They come in "Anime Legends" boxsets. Around 15 for each half of the series so 25 episodes per box. 4 boxes total for Seed and Seed Destiny.

I was in a similar situation as you except I've seen Wing before when they had it on Toonami. Now I'm in the middle of a huge Gundam marathon.

I think its funny nobody is mentioning G-Saviour even though its canon to the Universal Century. G-Saviour takes place in UC 0223, Victory takes place in UC 0153.

Also, yeah, Unicorn takes place in the UC, and mostly concerns Banagher and his piloting of the Unicorn to protect Mineva Zabi, Dozle's daughter, who is going by the name of Audrey at this point. I've seen a few of the episodes and its really good so far.

Especially the part in the show where people think Full Frontal is Char Aznable. The fact that they are voiced by the same person makes me think so, too.

They aren't the same person, but there is a connection between the two.

Which is stupid because one of the character's make the comment "Sounds like him [Char]..!" when Full Frontal began negotiations with Daguza.

The storyline isn't what was important. It's just when you hear someone say that X character sounds like Y character and they have difference voice actors, it sounds wierd.

I read in a recent interview that Frontal's original hasn't actually been settled on, and the information most people have, which comes from novels, isn't exactly going to be accurate. Most information on him comes from the original Unicorn novels, but the full story will be presented later in the OVA's. However, they did confirm that Frontal is not Char.

I'm disappointed different people voice Char and Frontal in the english version, since they're still the same person in the japanese version of the game. That would have made it more interesting. Then again, I do get annoyed everytime someone says Banagher's name wrong, so, maybe I am just nitpicking at this point. :/

Gundam Series

You may download some of the Gundam Series in English from here: http://english-dub.kametsu.com/ Links to anime series are on the list to the right (bottom). These are mainly DVD quality.

There is:

Gundam Wing - My first Gundam Series.
○ Gundam Wing Endless Waltz (Movie)

Gundam 00 (Season 1 & 2) - Very similar feeling to Wing.
♣ Gundam 00 A wakening of the Trailblaze (Movie)

G Gundam - So crazy that its great.

Gundam 0079 (original)
The 08th MS Team
Gundam 0080: War in Pocket
Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Zeta Gundam
Gundam ZZ (Double Zeta)
Char's Counter Attack
Gundam Unicorn (incomplete)
Gundam F91
After War Gundam X

Gundam Seed - Honestly not sure whether I liked it or not.
Gundam Seed Destiny - Again not sure whether I liked it or not.

Turn a Gundam

In fact this is almost the order I watched the Gundam Series in. The ones with matching symbols you should watch in order for full understanding/enjoyment.

The ones in bold you can get from the website. The ones in Italics are not available in English but there are subtitled versions. For best results use SplashLite to play these (free version). http://mirillis.com/en/products/splash.html

As for UK region 2, it is hard to get the DVDs in our region. I bought Gundam Wing, cost like 20 per DVD were 11 of them. So wasn't cheap 220 ($440 at the time approximately). The original Mobile Suit Gundam Series would also cost a fortune to obtain. I bought Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 and Double Zeta, better buy but Region 1. There is a program called AnyDVD that allows you to overcome any region problems on your computer but best to download them. Theres no waiting for adverts and the quality of the videos I have downloaded on that site is as good as the DVDs when using the SplashLite program. Enjoy.

It's impossible to find gun dam series azrael dude, trust me ive only managed to find seed and seed destiny .. The rest I've had to find online to watch.. Depressing really ..

You can rent the mobile suit gundam 1,2 and 3 movies they cover the original mobile suit gundam films and gives you an over view of what gundam is truly about

(by the way nice to see a fellow xbox.com go-er)

I wanted to point out that I recently read that the original Gundam series is finally being released in North America, in its complete form. The previous dvd release, which took place around ten years ago, only had english audio.

Amazon currently doesn't have it listed (that I could find), but you can find it here: http://www.animecornerstore.com/guorbtvse.html

The first set comes out September 13th, and retails for $34.99. I'm not sure how many episodes each set will have, but I personally plan to purchase them. I've held off on buying anything from the UC because the original series wasn't available in a form I wanted until now. Should be a quality set from Bandai, too.
