Thieves Guild help

Ive just finished the Thieves Guild questline and received the 'tribute chest' key.

Where is this chest and how do I get the Skeleton Key?

Also, how do I add stuff to my house?

The tribute chest is just in front of the desk where Mercer Frey was always standing.

Once you return the Skeleton Key you can't get it back.

What exactly do you mean by add things? Add furniture or decorate it with things from your inventory?

Once you return the skeleton key to Nocturnal, you can't get it back. This is why I suggest you take the strategy i did and use the skeleton key until you can get up to the level for unbreakable lockpicks, then finish the questline. And even after you return the skeleton key, the questline still ins't complete until you do some random tasks to "return the guild to it's former glory".

Also, adding stuff to your house is completely unrelated. How you add furniture depends on what house it is. If it is a house that you purchase, you simply go to someone in that city to buy upgrades for it. If it is a hearthfire home, you must have the materials to build the upgrade you want and do so at the worktable in the room you want to upgrade.

Ive fully completed the Thieves Guild questline.

Would I have got the key earlier on?

Ah. Go the the room with all the beds and there's a desk across and to the right from the ladder. There's a few shelves and a bust behind it.

You get it during the questline and have to return it to complete it.

From the Hearthfire DLC. Assuming a base game home then, you can add furniture and some things by talking to the City's steward. If there's anything from your inventory you want to add just drop it and drag it around.
