Marriage With Benefits List

Marriage Guide
By IDiivil

How To:
Want to get married in the world of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? Simple. All you need is an amulet of Mara, which tells the people around you that you are interested in finding a spouse. This can be found through two confirmed methods:

1. Go to Riften and to the Temple of Mara. Speak to Maramal. Buy the amulet from him for 200 coins. If Maramal is completely MIA from the Temple of Mara for you, then he can be found at the Bee & Barb Inn. You may have to trigger him at the inn first, as I was informed that he has to go through a bit of dialogue before he actually leaves to be found at the temple.
2. In a tent on the coast north-east of Dawnstar[1].

Once you have this amulet, you now have dialogue options opened to propose marriage to the various NPCs of Skyrim (official list of who you can marry below). Please note, however, that you need to have completed their other requirements to open the option, whether that is finishing favor quests for them or otherwise.

After you propose to the NPC of your choice, you go through a ceremony held by the Temple of Mara and then can move your NPC into your home.

Heterosexual and homosexual marriages are both possible in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Divorce, Polygamy, and Otherwise:
If you end up marrying someone you are not all that into, your only option for getting rid of them is to kill them or, in the case of followers, getting them killed by others.

Please note, you cannot be married to more than one spouse at a time... no matter your location or how sneaky you are. Only one spouse.

WARNING: You cannot remarry. I repeat, YOU CANNOT REMARRY. Be very, very careful who you choose, then, as even if you kill your spouse, you do not get the option to find a new one. Ever [4].

Overall Benefits of Marriage:
- Your spouse will cook you one meal a day regardless of their location. This temporarily raises your health/stamina/magicka recovery.
- Your spouse will occasionally gift you.
- Your spouse can follow you as a companion and carry your junk (no pun intended) if you so command it. Your spouse can also engage in battles with you.
- Your spouse, when you rest in the same bed as them, can give you the Lover's Comfort bonus (15% increase in speed of mastering skills). If you are infected with lycanthropy, however, you cannot receive this bonus (needs to be confirmed).
- Your spouse will give you 100 gold/day regardless of whether they were originally merchants or not.
- Your spouse, if s/he had the ability to train you in any skills before the wedding ceremony, can still continue to train you... and this time, in the benefit of your own home.
- You and your spouse will both receive a ring during your wedding ceremony that reduces the cost of restoration spells by 10%.

Bugs and the Not Yet Added:
- As of now, no Khajiit has been confirmed available for marriage opportunities.
- As of now, no wood elves have been confirmed for available for marriage opportunities.
- Unless your spouse is a follower (whose armor you can change), your spouse is stuck wearing whatever clothes they come with. Even attempts at pickpocketing them and altering their inventory to hold the armor you would like to see them in does not work [4].
- Bethesda has confirmed that Lydia can bug out and not show options for marriage in some games. They plan to fix this in the next patch [5].

- Make sure to save your game before your wedding ceremony. A bug can occur during the ceremony itself where the NPC may start walking toward the temple's exit before Maramal is done speaking and player can move. If the NPC leaves the temple before the player can speak to him/her about where they will live, then the NPC will disappear. They will reappear if they are part of a quest, like Ysolda in "A Night to Remember" [1].

If you do hit the bug above, it has been confirmed that, if you hit B to exit the conversation early and talk to your to-be spouse before s/he leaves the building, you can prevent said spouse from disappearing and the marriage will proceed as normal [3]. No cold feet for you, bitch.

- Another bug that has been noted is that, if you ever killed one of your followers, they may appear dead during your wedding ceremony, thus freaking out the NPCs and breaking the wedding. If this happens, then you have two options:
1. Get a new follower, then have the wedding. A new follower should override the dead follower and prevent him/her from spawning during the wedding [5].
2. Fail the wedding and propose again - the body will still be there, but the NPCs will not react to it this time for whatever reason [5].
3. Apparently, letting the quest for the wedding ceremony announce, then entering the temple for the marriage will prevent the follower from spawning [6]. You must not be in the temple when the quest announces across the top of your screen, however.

Uh... I saved right before the ceremony, and every time I try to get married to Aela the above glitch happens, she leaves right at the end and disappears. I also did all the Companions quests so I'm guessing she won't come back...?

EDIT: Nvm, I found that if I pressed "B" to exit the chat at the end and talked to her before she left, it fixed it.

I believe it essentially 100 gold/day. With all the speech perks on the left side of the skill tree, my wife Ysolda now has 2200 gold available for bartering and buys stolen goods right in my own house Very handy indeed.

Edit: Just murdered the wife in Whiterun, then went to Riverwood and the lady there has no dialogue to start a marriage with the necklace on. Will try getting a new necklace...

Edit 2: Doesn't seem like you can remarry. Can't get a new necklace, and no women respond to the one I'm wearing. Even dropped it and then tried to get a new one, with no dialogue option.

I don't know a solution for the glitch I'll try to do some research to see if there is something that can fix it, but when I was reading around and making this mini guide, I couldn't find anyone mentioning a way to avoid the glitch happening.

Sorry, man. Let me know if you can find a way around it.

I'll go back and edit the info above to put in the gold/day thing. This is just with merchant spouses, correct? Thanks for the heads up also.

Hmm...if you read my edits above, you'll see that I can't find a way to remarry. While having Ysolda is useful, I've only fully visited 2 towns at this point. Hope I don't find someone I'd rather marry later >_<

Damnnnn. No option to remarry? That sucks. Thank you for confirming that. I'll throw it in and link it to your name or whatnot.

Will do the same for you, Grohlvana. I'm glad you found a fix.

I was also told that any spouse you marry who gave you the option to train a skill with them also stays after the wedding ceremony, so you can still up your skills with them - and in your house!

I am wondering, since the game is rated M for, in part, sexual theme, can you have sex with your wife / husband (probably in a fable way, of course) or not?

From what I have read, I believe it is simply a fade to black assumed thing.

I can't seem to get Lydia to marry me which I've been trying to do since a heavily armored warrior chick and a dark elf mage/thief that she already follows 24/7 would be convenient lol

Cool! It says that "homesexual relationships are possible" - so can I marry a female when I am a female? Sorry, but that terms sounds to me for male on male.

So when two females are together they arnt homosexuals? Yes, if they allow male/male marriages then it can be assumed that they will allow female/female marriages.

Homosexual doesnt mean two guys...

One marriage. Ever. No remarrying or polygamy or nothin'. I was disappointed too. I wanted my harem of citizen men hanging around... sausage fest that shit up.

Muahaha.

Female/female is possible, yes.

...

Lastly, if any of you guys find anything in the NPC list that can be added (such as the character being a merchant, etc), please let me know! I'd really appreciate the heads up Makes things a little easier on my part.

For the lovers comfort effect does it have to be the bed in a house you own or any place with the sleep option while your spouse is following?

Also does the spouse's attitude change towards you like for example whenever you trade with Lydia she gives you the im sworn to carry your burden line every single time does that change?

Also is it possible to change your spouse's armor?

Sorry, I was asleep. I can help you now.

1. Not confirmed. Can someone check this for me and see if lover's comfort only applies to inside your house with your spouse (haha, I rhymed), or in the case of followers, if it still applies as long as you sleep in a bed that they are near?

2. That's just Lydia's "trade items with me" line. It's bitchy, it doesn't change, and it always makes me roll my eyes when I hear it. Enjoy having that constantly repeated, dude :P

3. Yes, you can change armor... at least in the case of follower based spouses. I am unsure and also highly doubt you can change the appearance of any spouse who is not a follower. Anyways, all you need to do is give them armor that is stronger (higher defense, game doesn't seem to count enchants) than whatever they are wearing then. I believe they usually come with steel armor on.

I can't seem to find Maramal inside the temple, there are 2 other priests/followers there, but not Maramal, is there a specific time a day i find him, or do i have to do something first before he gets there?

I actually found him a lot on the lower floors - especially at night. Otherwise, he should be at the altar area during the day.

I haven't tried it (and can't at the moment), but do you think reverse-pickpocketing your non-follower spouse would allow you to change their clothing? Always seemed to work in previous Bethesda games, so might be worth a try to anyone who's bored :P

Also, thinking back on it....I don't think I ever waited 3 days after killing my spouse to see if that allowed you to get married again. I know, shame shame, always wait 3 days when trying stuff in Elder Scrolls :P If no one gets to these 2 things, I'll test them in the morning, before I pick up Assassin's Creed and disappear from these boards for a while

Should be back by the weekend if all goes well. Put almost 40 hours into Skyrim over the weekend, surely I can clear AC during the week.

Edit: Just attempted these. After reverse-pickpocketing my deadric gear onto Ysolda and waiting/leaving, she did not wear it. Even after I attacked her and she went into self-defense mode, she refused to put it on =/ Also, I killed her, waited 3 days, traveled to Riften, sold our rings/amulet, and still can't get another one. Was also unable to get another dialogue option with any other character while wearing it before I sold it. Guess you're stuck with your chosen spouse, or being a widow(er).
