Intro and Info

What is a Follower?
A follower is a character that you can have join you throughout your journey. They can be used as pack mules to carry your loot, a tank to protect your mage, a ranged damage fighter to complement your warrior, or a buddy rogue as backup for whenever sneaking plans go awry. There are many types of followers - their differences ranging from all their unique looks to different skill focuses - and while some of them may be harder to get, a follower is something that you as a player should consider taking along if you ever need a little help alleviating the loneliness of the big world that is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Types of Followers
Hirelings
- Followers that, if paid the gold amount they request, will join you. Mercenaries is perhaps a better word for them.

Housecarls - Whenever your character is named Thane of a major area (such as Whiterun or Solitude), your character will be appointed a housecarl. These housecarls can serve as followers.

Guildmates - If you are a member of a major guild, you may be able to ask one of your guildmates to join you.

Quest or Dungeon Followers - Some followers are hidden away in quests or dungeons in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. If you complete a quest or clear a dungeon they are a part of, you will have the option to have them join you in your journey. For quest related followers, many of these quests are daedric quests.

Something to note about these daedric quests is that, the majority of the time, choosing the artifact will lose you the follower. I highly recommend choosing the daedric artifacts in spite of all of this simply because there is a missable achievement tied to having basically all the artifacts.

Favor Followers - If you complete a task or run an errand for certain characters, they can become followers should you ask them to come with you.

Animal Companions - Counted separate from normal companions (thus you can have an animal follower and a human follower), animal companions are dogs who will fight at your side in combat.

Follower Commands
Wait/Follow
- Wait is the command you give to your follower to have them hold in one place. When you are done having them wait, return to your follower and request they follow you once more. Followers will not move from a wait command, but will break from it to fight enemies if they engage too close.

"I need you to do something for me" - When you use this command, you have the choice to order your follower to do something... By moving your target crosshairs, you can tell your follower to use, take, steal, or attack something. Pressing activate sends the command through. Do note that your followers cannot mine even if you give them a pickaxe. If you tell them to do a criminal act (assault, theft, etc), your character is responsible and will have the bounty placed on them.

Trade Items - Through this menu, you can either have your follower be your pack mule and carry your items/loot, or you can equip them with better armor, weapons, rings, or necklaces. Please note that, like you, followers do have carry limits.

If for some reason your follower does not equip something that you give to them, it is because their standard equipment they came with when you first brought them along is considered "better" than what you are offering.

Part Ways - This sends your follower back home to wherever it is you originally found them. You can return to them at any time during the game and recruit them once more to your team.

Follower Death
Followers can and will die. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim does try to offset this annoyance, however, by having followers get downed before death occurs.

Downed Follower - When your follower loses all of their health, they will fall into a crouched/collapsed position. All aggro from enemies will be redirected to you (or any other ally in the area). If you have healing spells, you can raise your follower from their downed position during battle. If not, they will stand back up once battle ends. Followers can still take damage while downed, however, so be sure not to send any shouts or AoE spells their way.

Dead Follower - A dead follower is, well, dead. They will be fully collapsed and rag doll'd on the ground, and you will be able to search their bodies and loot them of anything you had given them at the time. Dead followers cannot be resurrected. Once you lose them, they're gone for good.

"Where Did My Follower Go...?!"
So your follower is not dead, but no matter where you look, you cannot find him/her. Here's a few things you can do to potentially return them back where they belong... which is behind you - to serve your will and every whim.

1. Wait. Sometimes, especially when you run ahead on the map, your follower lags behind and needs time to catch up to you. Using the wait function will give them said time.
2. Transition into a new area - perhaps a dungeon or inside a building. Your follower should appear directly beside you.
3. Fast travel. Like your loyal horse, if you even have one, your follower should always appear beside you after a fast travel.
4. Did you ever tell your follower to wait somewhere? You may have forgotten to ask them to follow you once more. If that's the case, use the wait function and/or let a few in game days pass. They should "tire of waiting" and return to wherever you first found them. The game will inform you in the upper left corner when your follower grows bored and goes home.
If all else fails, your follower might have died, and you didn't notice. In that case, my condolences. I hope they were not carrying anything of too much value.

Things to Keep in Mind
A follower, in most cases, is going to be a pretty handy tool to have along. In spite of their uses, however, a follower can sometimes be detrimental. Here are two examples:

1. Your follower will never be as skilled in sneaking as you are. If you ever require some serious discretion, it may be best to advise your follower to stay home or "Wait" so you don't have to deal with them alerting everyone to your presence.

2. You can always damage your follower - regardless of whether you are using the more obvious AoE spells or accidentally smacking them with your axe when they run out at front of you. In some cases, doing these things can kill your follower. It may be wise to leave followers at home if you find yourself constantly murdering your companion or otherwise not wanting to babysit your aim.

Just How Many Followers Can I Really Have?
Assuming you have the skill perk at the end of the conjuration tree that allows the summoning of two atronachs, here's an example of how many people you can really have:

1. One human follower.
2. One pet companion.
3. One quest NPC.
4. One conjuration from your follower.
5 and 6. Up to two conjurations from yourself.

I Want to Marry My Follower >:3
I made a guide on who you can marry and which ones are potential followers. You can check that out here: http://www.xbox360achievements.org/f...d.php?t=342435

Acquiring Your Followers

Here's how to get each follower:

Hirelings:
All you need to get hirelings are to pay off their required gold amount. For example, Jenassa would need 500 gold for you to hire her services.

Housecarls: All you need to do to get a housecarl is to become a thane in the area that they are named in the list above. You do not need to purchase a house. They will be in the city's keep/castle/hold/etc until you buy a house, which they will then move into. The only exceptions to this is the housecarls of Solitude (Jordis) and Riften (Iona) due to these cities requiring you to purchase a house before you become thane.

The Companions: Simply join the guild in Whiterun and work through the quests there until you have the option to request one of them to follow you along. Will need to confirm exactly what point they can become followers.

The College of Winterhold:
Simply join the college in Winterhold and work through the quests there until you have the option to request one of them to follow you along. Will need to confirm exactly what point they can become followers.

Dark Brotherhood Assassins: Simply join the Brotherhood and work through the quests there until you have to option to request one of them to follow you along. Will need to confirm exactly what point they can become followers.

Quest-Related Followers: Simply finish the quest, and the NPC should have an option to become your follower. With NPCs tied to Daedric Quests, you must side with the NPC, or else they will become angry with you and not allow you the option to have them as followers. Please note, however, that generally siding with the NPC in these quests will fail to net you the actual daedric artifacts, missing you out on the very missable achievement. It may be wise to simply skip over these follower selections /in most cases/. Some of them are still possible to have both daedric artifact and follower. Specific information on each quest and connected follower provided directly below:
  • Adelaisa Vendicci - Side Quest: Rise in the East
    TO BE ADDED.
    --
  • Aranea - Daedric Quest: The Black Star
Simply run through the quest as normal. When you have the choice of siding with her and the other side, however, you must follow the route Aranea asks of you. If you neglect to do this, she will hold a grudge and refuse to speak with you at any significant length at the end of the quest. Following her side will still reward you with the daedric artifact, however, so if you insist on having her, it's more than possible.
    --
  • Eola - Daedric Quest: The Taste of Death
Simply run through the quest as normal. When you have the choice of siding with her and the other side, however, you must follow the route Eola asks of you. Neglecting to do so will cause her to not be on your side, thus not your follower. Fortunately, following her side also gets you the daedric artifact, so you need not hesitate to do as she says.
    --
  • Erandur - Daedric Quest: Waking Nightmare
Simply run through the quest as normal. When you have the choice of siding with him and the other side, however, you must follow the route Erandur asks of you. Failing to do so will end him, thus making him impossible to choose as a follower. Do note that following Erandur's side will most likely lose you the daedric artifact.
    --
  • Lob - Daedric Quest: The Cursed Tribe
    TO BE ADDED.
    --
  • Ogol - Daedric Quest: The Cursed Tribe
    TO BE ADDED.
    --
  • Ugor - Daedric Quest: The Cursed Tribe
    TO BE ADDED.

Dungeon-Related Followers: Simply clear the dungeon and the connected quest, and the NPC that accompanied you should have the option to become your follower. You must ensure they survive the dungeon for them to become your companion. Specific information on each quest and connected follower provided directly below:
  • Illia - Found in Darklight Tower (The Rift).
    TO BE ADDED.
    --
  • Golldir - Found in Hillgrund's Tomb (Whiterun Hold).
    TO BE ADDED.

Favor Followers: Simply run a favor or errand for the NPC in question. Once you have their favor, you should have the option to ask them to accompany you in your journeys. Specific information on each favor and connected follower provided directly below:
  • Ahtar the Jailor
    --
  • Benor
    --
  • Cosnach
    --
  • Borgakh
Borgakh is pledged to go off and marry as a female orc. Either pay off her dowry, persuade, or actually do the favor quest she gives, and she will be freed of her obligation to marry and be able to travel as she had wanted to do so - and with you, if you so choose.
    --
  • Ghorbash
    --
  • Uthgerd the Unbroken
Found in the Whiterun inn. She's sitting in the corner on the first floor. Simply win a fist fight against her, and she will pledge her services to you.
    --
  • Sven
    --
  • Faendal
    --
  • Roggi Knot-Beard
    --
  • Derkeethus
    --
  • Annekke Crag-Jumper
    --
  • Mjoll the Lioness
    --
  • Kharjo

Animal Companions: Through quests, purchases, or random map encounters, you can have a dog accompany you as a companion. Specific information on available dogs are provided directly below:
  • Vigilance
Bought from the dog-merchant for 500 gold. Generally found around stables.
    --
  • Meeko
Dog found in the wilderness close to Meeko's Shack in Hjaalmarch.
    --
  • Barbas
Quest related companion. Quest line begins in Falkreath.
    --
  • Stray Dog
Found randomly in the world map.

I'm using the guide book as a supplement, actually. A lot of what I am writing is stuff I've read through the forums and things I've found out myself... the only thing I'm really taking from the guide are the descriptions of the characters (i.e. what skill focuses they are).

... also, I'm not sure if it's legal to use direct information like that from the guide. Would rather not risk it. Even when I am double checking my info in the guide, I'm not using any of their wording.

Thanks regardless for the offer.

That is alot of followers to choose from.

I've currently got Lydia & The Dog Meeko but I also gave Lydia a Staff which lets her summon her "Familia" which in her case is a ghost like Wolf, so when we go in to battle there are 4 of us.

I'd forgotten i'd given her the Staff the first time it happened & I thought what is going on? a ghost wolf is here!, then realised she had that weapon, love this game.

Updated the guide somewhat. Still have a lot left to do. Hopefully, what little I have up for preliminary guide stuff will be useful for everyone. As you can see, I will soon have a description up for everyone to ensure they get the follower they want and not fail any objective to scare them off.

It is, however, very, very late for me, and I have work in the afternoon. For now, fingers crossed on my part that this is satisfactory.

To become a thane of Solitude and get the housecarl Jordis the sword-maiden you actually have to buy a house. Its part of the requirement to become a thane in that area.

Saw this yesterday when it was empty and was a little worried lol

But great job!

Still no idea what happened to my Faendal follower, didnt die just got stuck behind a rock and i just carried on as they find a way around eventually, although he never did. I forgot about it for a bit, when i remembered i was 6+ hrs of gameplay on (yes yes, i was drunk and i really don't need a follower so didnt notice). Lost around 8k gold because he was carrying 5-6 dragons worth of loot. :/

I seem to of ran into a glitch/bug. I have never hired a companion, yet the other day I wanted to hire one to help me with my 1000 lbs. of dragon bones/scales, and was told I already have one. I was like hmm....how the hell. Only thing I can think of is.....
Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

Any suggestions on trying to purge oneself of followers that one might have? I am positive I never have hired one, unless there is some quest that has one tied to it, and it is counting as having one.

Thanks for the heads up. I just got her as a thane and forgot that part of the process to become a thane in Solitude is to buy a house first. Derp.

Yeah, I probably should have started the guide when I had more of an inclination to sit down and flesh it out more appropriately. Kind of looked bad there for a while. I hope it's redeemed itself somewhat :P

Any suggestions on trying to purge oneself of followers that one might have? I am positive I never have hired one, unless there is some quest that has one tied to it, and it is counting as having one.
Let me look into that for you... honestly, though, quest/animal companions should not count as part of your follower count. Have you tried resetting your cache and all that? I'll get back to you once I think over some theories and have time after work to look it up for you.

I still have Farkis following for a quest for The Companions (one of the initial from the beginning), however I still haven't gone to complete the quest so he just follows along, never dieing. Essentially breaking the quest sequence till I go and complete the quest.

Not married. And I have been trying to wrap up quests with people that might be at a specific locale waiting for me. Still no luck. Thanks for the replies.

Wanted to add....If you are over encumbered, just hop on the back of your horse and you can then fast travel! This helped me lug all sorts of Dwemer relics and dragon bones/scales back to my house.

If you guys can figure out a reason why the game claims you have a follower when you never picked one up, please let me know. I'll post it up with cred. It's deffo a problem that I should address in the guide.

Add I guess from my experience, that you have someone that is part of a quest and you select to "Meet me at X" and you forget, the game will consider them still following as it's an active quest, even if you do it later or forget about it. It would fall under the Quest Followers?

I can't hire or get someone else cause I have him, would make sense that if I send him off to the location that it'll still count that he's with me. I'll make a save and check.

EDIT: Sent him to the location, and still cant hire, Follower said "Looks like you have someone with you already".

Do any of the dogs go back to my house when i tell them to leave? Just though it'd be cool to have a dog at home. I told Meeko to leave, not sure where he goes I'll check once I clear this dugeon, he kept dieing so i told him to leave and I'll get him back later.

Quest followers in that regard tend to be very, very finicky. I know some quests I did for the Companions guild automatically disabled my follower for the quest NPC, regardless of whether he met me at location X or not.

This is also the case in Riften...you need to buy a house before you get the title of Thane.

Excellent guide though! I'm currently in the process of deciding who will make the best companion for my playing style and this is helping no end

Yeah, found that out last night myself when Auburok became Thane in Riften. I appreciate the reminder, though - completely forgot to add that 'cause I was doing Skyrim spam.

I'll try to add some details in the how-to-acquire section today, but I am really hooked on Skyrim and want to enjoy it for the majority of what I do tonight also, so I won't be finished with this just yet.

Are there any Altmer followers? It might be helpful to also include the followers race? I'm looking for an Altmer to...um, well, kill. There doesn't seem to be many Altmers...or at least I'm having trouble finding many.

I don't believe there are any high elf followers... I would have picked one simply because I play a high elf and would have liked it that way.

stats

been searching around to answer a question, and to no avail. I read about the companions different skills, but is there anything else that sets them apart, like stats? or is just pick and choose what skill/face/race you want?

No stats in the guide... and nothing I can find out through the game itself. It might be possible on PC, but I don't own a copy of Skyrim on it and I don't have the know how to find that kind of info anyways.

Sorry, man.

Also, I'll finish up this guide within the next week or two. Lot of stuff going on with the holidays, so I haven't had time.
