It's good, but it doesn't really feel like a Sonic game

I know, I know, black sheep of the Genesis games and all that. I mean it quite literally, though.

For one thing, the levels are obtuse and branch in a nonlinear manner at times. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does feel unthematic for a Sonic game. Not so much the branching paths, but the way they branch, like in Metallic Madness Zone 2. Not only do you travel left and down through a fair bit of the level, you also get a gimmick laser that turns Sonic small. Where in the world did that come from?

Aside from that, though, the level designs don't particularly feel quite like a Sonic game, either. There's a ton more platforming than there is in other games in the series, and to get up to top speed requires some jumping and finagling rather than just running down a ramp or across a plateau. Again, not bad and probably a better design than the other Genesis games, but it makes it feel like it should have been based around a whole different character.

And what is up with the bosses? Not only does the game break from the series tradition of 8 hits to kill Robotnik, but also some of them are decidedly cheap or unfair (such as the Wacky Workbench boss, which can lead to a cheap death the first time you play the game if you mistakenly jump to a higher platform like you've done the two times before, only to get crushed against a ceiling you couldn't see coming and can't react to in time). Others are laughably easy or stupid, like the last boss. Does it even seem like a last boss at all? I honestly was expecting to go to some Final Zone and face a really tough machine, but instead it's four hits and he's history. Missing the mark much?

Please, fell free to divulge your opinion on the subject, even if it's just to flame me for disliking the game (although I said I liked it, I highly expect at least one person to do this based on the topic alone). Is this REALLY a Sonic game, or is it another game cloaked in Sonic's skin?

No you're right. You just have to play through a few acts, see the special stage and anyone with Sonic experience is going to say "This... is strange."

That's how I describe Sonic CD to other people. It is strange. Strange isn't necessarily a bad thing though, it sure is less repetitive than the classics.

Sonic CD is very different, but that's why I love it so much. Plus I had this on PC as a kid and loved it, soo..

Chronologically you could argue it feels *more* like one. This went into production when Sonic had one game really, and I think in many ways CD feels closer to the original than Sonic 2. Not entirely, both feel like logical, natural successors to different aspects of that first game.

I frankly appreciate that Sonic CD has something different to offer. Although I wish they'd focus on the time aspect of the game, because that was a pretty cool idea.

I completely agree, although its definately my favourite of the old sonic games and offers more than run to right.
