^$%@*wtf!!! .....like it's 1999

Okay, my anticipation for Infinite is already pretty damn high.

Then I read this:
http://kotaku.com/5877468/permanent-...-like-its-1999

And I think I just about wet myself. Tears of joy. Speechless.

Gamers old enough to remember those "good ol' days" of NES controller throwing madness, punishing difficulty and the true demon that the "Game Over" screen used to represent, will either shout with joy or cringe in fear.

Safety net firmly pulled out from under our shoes.

All of the games with "safety nets" and increased difficulty settings have simply been imposters posing as games with a legitimate challenge. Bioshock Infinite simply says:

Haha very cutely fitting. And that x360a post was not up when I posted. Nice!

I did really truly enjoy the challenge Dead Space 2's Hardcore mode represented. Few games have stressed me out like that. Can't wait to try this one.

EDIT: I really must build the nerve to try Dark Souls too....it sounds mind-boggling.

I`m looking forward to hours of complete rage trying to go for that last achievement for completing a playthrough on 1999.

It would have sounded better if they made the year 1992, then i really would be worried.

Games of 1999 weren't that hard, they had save games and checkpoints so death wasn't permanent.

If Irrational are indeed referring to the 16 bit games of the SNES then my only concern is how the 'rules' of 16 bit games apply to a modern day game like Bioshock.

I know the articles states death is permanent and you select your skills from the start but games have evolved so much in 10 years i'm worried this will be nothing like the games of old (which may lead to a new and interesting hybrid of the two) or it will be beyond frustrating. Oh and there better be power-ups, you can't have a true 1999 mode without power-ups

I believe that 1999 is in reference to System Shock 2 which Levine designed that year. Plus, everybody loves Prince (Game-Blouses!)

That's what i though at first but all the talk of permanent deaths and no customisation threw me off because System Shock 2 didn't have anything like that.

I'm excited for this. Always up for a challenge.

Sounds a bit similar to the recent insane mode in the Witcher

It gives "thrown to the wolves" a whole new meaning. Imagine a friend giving you a game to play, but before you ask any questions s/he looks at you and says, "figure it out on your own." I might try again after I finish some other games first. Another one in the backlog. *sigh*

I actually really hope that there isn't an achievement for this.

As much as I appreciate the existence of such a mode and can see the appeal, I'm not the sort of gamer who replays single-player games.

I want my one and only playthrough to be pleasurable, not frustrating.

I'm pretty sure there will be an achievement for this. They're going for the more hardcore hunters with this mode i think.

Indeed. How could there NOT be? Achievements were created to honour such moments as these.

I don't seriously think Levine was thinking xbox 360 achievements in creating this mode though, semantically I think he was thinking old school bragging rights of "I beat Metroid in 2 hours without a map" level of achievement.

Daaaaaaaammmmnnnnnn.

Glad someone got a Prince reference in there. Only a matter of time.

I still hope there is some sort of save file.
It is very hard to play the whole game in one run, unless it will be a short game.

I'm down for a challenge, I usually rock the hardest difficulty first anyway.
(unless there are achievements that will be easier on a lower difficulty.)
I won't have a problem with 1999 mode, it'll make it worth getting that 1000G.

Definitely don't mind when games add a hardcore mod to games. Just makes it feel awarding when you finish it. Like Dead Space 1/2.
I'll for sure be beating this to get the 1k.

It's not so much that I'm looking forward to playing through on hardcore (I usually like to enjoy games relatively stress free), it's just that I love the series too much not to beat it on 1999 mode.

I know that one day I'll be bored (likely after just beating the game on normal) remember I didn't 100% this game and give it a go. I won't like it, and I'll probably resort to using a guide for how to build my character, but I'll do it.

I'm not old enough to have experienced 90's gaming (although i played system shock 2 a couple of years ago before i got into gaming via the 360 and loved it) but i am excited about the way this game gives the middle finger to the less health+less ammo+bullet sponge enemies="fun challenge" formula that plagues games nowadays.

However hard it is though I will do it to 100% the game. If I only 100% 1 game this year I vow it will be Bioshock Infinite

Actually, I finally remembered what this achievement reminds me of: Hardcore! - from Fallout: New Vegas
(or at least what it was supposed to be I'm theory, before people discovered you could beat it in around 5hours by skipping everything)

And when I get my hands on New Vegas I'll have to do exactly that

I'm just excited for the game to come out period. I love the franchise and while people ragged on 2 for not being as good as 1, it was still pretty damn fun and it's story was miles ahead of the ragged shit out today

I am really excited to see exactly what 1999 mode means. I would like to see some setting where, if you die, it's back to square one, maybe even your save getting deleted or cannot be copied elsewhere. Something has to be done to put the true difficulty back in games. You can bet there's going to be achievements tied to it as well. The safety net is being pulled out from under. Time to see who falls with it.

Man, I'm all for difficulty.
Every game I play, I play on the hardest mode. But this sounds a bit...Tense?
What's going to happen when choices seriously eradicate progression.
I know why they want to make it hard, but the way they are describing it sounds like it's more 1987 than anything.

Seams like more and more games are coming out with super crazy hard difficulty settings other then just easy, normal and hard. Like Levine said, it's harder now to make a lot of AA tittles. So I guess you just need to find a way for people to keep playing your AAA title once they finished the game. I think thats the other major reason for all these single player games throwing in multiplayer modes. But still cant wait for the game and I hope with this extra time they have taken to polish really adds a little extra icing!!

This should be really interesting. I'm excited to be able to stick to one character and specialization through the whole game. Respec-ing is nice if you have to play multiple specializations for achievements, but isn't as fun. Can't wait for this game!
