Your Favorite Ending to a Videogame

As games became older they've turned to a more cinematic way of storytelling. With another generation of consoles coming to an end, what do you find to be some of the more memorable endings to a single videogame or a given videogame franchise?

The final battle in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a great highlight, one of the reasons I loved it was because of the call backs to the older games from the shifts in music and the health bars. I'm putting the video of the finale in spoiler tags just in case there's people who want to look into the franchise but don't want the closing moments spoiled for them.

Another one of my favorites was the Bioshock: Infinite ending, purely because it's the only game where I've had the ending glued to my mind two weeks after playing it. I still think about it from time to time. It's fantastic stuff.

I also really enjoyed the endings to Deus Ex: Human Revolution...interesting to pour over and meditate on. Here they are.

It's hard to pick a favourite ending but Mass Effect 2 is definitely one of them. That ending cutscene is outstanding.

Yep. I'd start the awesome ending back at Snake crawling through the giant microwave though. One of the most epic gaming moments ever. That whole friggin game was so awesome!

Gonna add the Halo Reach ending and the Ocarina of Time ending.

From the moment you launch the gnome to the start of the final battle right through the ending my jaw was on the floor.

I agree.
I had a post typed out a minute ago but lost it. Spec Ops has probably the best ending I remember. Also, the ending of GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony had a cool ending.

I agree. The ending seemed to get a bit of stick when it first came out but I loved it.

The suicide mission from ME2 followed by the ending was epic.

Red Dead Redemption has got to be worth a mention, very profound.

I hated the second half or Far Cry 3 so much. Everything felt so rushed and it tried to give a message of killing things is bad and you should feel bad for killing things, but all I hear is Jason Brody whining. I hated Brody as a protagonist. Vaas was much more appealing. He was the bloody antagonist, and I was sympathizing with him!

I agree. The whole game is basically the ultimate finale for a guy like Snake. I was on the edge of my seat during the closing scene in the cemetery. Good God, Kojima. Don't toy with my emotions so hard in The Phantom Pain. Actually, do it. Wait, no. I need a life-time's supply of 4-Ply tissues first.

Nice thread idea. I think for me, my favorite ending(s) would have to be...

Modern Warfare 2 (I might get hated on because of that )

Max Payne 3 by far is one of my more favorite endings to any game I've played recently. It might not appeal to many, and a lot of fans may like the first two installments more, but Max Payne 3 was near perfect for me. The story and more importantly, the script and presentation, were fantastic and McCaffery's performance was amazing. Every event in the game is crazy and hectic, and then finally at the end, it's like you just stepped off the most frightening ride of your life. It's a little sappy of an ending, but seeing the protagonist relaxing after fighting his inner demons and saving the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, felt satisfying. And the fact that he was completely silent in the last scene and didn't say a single word was, to me, brilliant. Rockstar gave me a simple ending, and yet it worked real well.

--------------------

I'm playing through BioShock Infinite now so hopefully I can add that to my list by the end of the weekend!

I would have to say Bioshock Infinite and GTA IV. Those two games just made me go wow as the credits rolled and were two of my highlight games of this past generation that I played.

Max Payne 3 was brilliant, when you find out what's actually going on, not quite the end, its a big oh fuck moment. Awesome playthrough. Achievement wise it's a payne in the ass to have to play through it like 5 times though

You don't know what the heck you're talking about. I kid I kid, lol.

I think MW2 had a pretty good ending, the story was great too. Of course, I probably missed out because I never played another CoD after that.

For me I'm stuck between Red Dead and L.A. Noire which I mentioned both in a emotional thread too.

I think Red Dead was more emotional than L.A. but L.A ended a lot better overall. I loved how you kept playing both games past the protagonists' death.

I really liked that too and not often the main character of a game is killed off like that. I've heard of that movie, but don't think I've seen it. I need to watch that.

Dude, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, and Mark Wahlberg all in one mahoosively awesome crime/thriller. It won four Oscars, including Best Director (Martin Scorsese - the man behind Hugo, Goodfellas, and Shutter Island) and Best Motion Picture of the Year (2006). It's one of the many must watches.

On topic: I'm surprised a lot of people are mentioning Grand Theft Auto IV. I was under the impression that everyone hated Niko Bellic and his bowling-crazed cousin. I hear talk of The Lost and the Damned or Ballad of Gay Tony being much better than the main course.

Exactly. I kinda like it when games/movies do that...but keep pushing forward for a little bit past the protagonist's death. And definitely go watch it sometime, it's a great film!

What was I thinking! Fixed it, although it's still quoted in Kane's post Amazing movie though.

And I don't understand the love behind GTA IV. I played the hell outta that game but I don't remember the ending at all unless someone were to spark my memory of it. A forgettable ending definitely means it wasn't that good.

Hands down Bioshock 1. I've seen that (good) ending more then a few times but every time

I cry and applaud. I rarely EVER cry.

Others would be

Red dead Redemption,Fallout 3,COD World at War,Gears of war 3.
