the part i had the MOST frustration with was actually after the chopper, when you get the car back. i put the gnome in the car before it was driveable, might have glitched it. whatever i did, it would not stay in the car. like... it fell through the floor. everytime i got out and back in, i had to reset the gnome or it would fall through the floor again. found the best place to watch it was actually up front. jamming it in the window caused many, many lost gnomes.

there's a trick you can use, at least for the first part. just leave him by the advisor's barn somewhere, and drive off, avoiding the hunter-chopper. make it into the tunnels, and when you go through the loading screen, walk back and get him. the chopper won't bother you.

i've heard there's a similar trick for the second part. seems like the people at the base distract it a little. couldn't get it to work. the game fails you if you leave alyx there.

Thank you for the guide, it saved me on parts like right before you get the car. I almost left the gnome in the room with alyx and the vortigaunt ><

This guide helped me out alot.
It's worth noting that you can get the Pedal to the Metal achievement and Bob to the base in one run.
Just win the race and walk all the way back. Bob still should be there.

Dunno if that way is faster than loading a save or not.

Don't feel bad. :P Lamar would end up in the rocket and get launched up into the portal, no matter what.

no, i miss lamar.
Launching lamar into the portal ranked up there with the end of episode 2 for me.
I mean two losses, come on.

Maybe we will get Episode 3 on 360.
I liked Lamar too for causing all that trouble to people but look at it that way, Lamar was the reason why you had to walk all the way to black mesa east. If it wasn't for Lamar you'd have ended up safely in Black Mesa East during the transport in Kleiners Lab.

I just launched my little smiling pal into space this evening. You may want to edit the guide slightly though. I left the Gnome with Alyx and the vortigaunt when Alyx is on the sniper, and I was still able to retrieve him despite the door closing. Just place him next to the garage door, beside the severed legs. When you open the control for it, hop down and sprint up the stairs quickly. You should have enough time to comfortably pull him through the door.

I was glad to see that bastard go. I completed most of Episode 2 twice because i'd lose him at random points. Felt good to get that achievement though.

I wanted to know, how hard exactly is this achievement?
If I try it on my first playthrough of Ep2, would it pretty much ruin the game, (story and actual fun) because I'm too focused on the gnome?
I don't want this one achievement to ruin my first thoughts of Ep2...

I just got this achievements 2 days ago. I didn't get it on my first play through, becaused like you said I was worried it would ruin the story. After completing the game I went back to do this and it is so frustrating that you do loose focus on the story especially because of all the reloading and back tracking to get the Gnome.

Personally I would advise to play it normally first as it is a great story and then get that damn Gnome in the rocket another time!

Everyone is saying that keeping the gnome in the car is so hard. But do I HAVE to use the car?
What if I just take the gnome and run like hell?

You'll get shot like hell.

There's definitely benefits to keeping the car, it reduces quite a bit of damage that the gunship dishes out. On the part with the train tracks however, I actually left my gnome under a train car, drove to the end. Left Alyx at the end. Ran back (ducking under train cars for cover), got my gnome, and doubled back again. >_>

But now that you mention it, I don't know if you ACTUALLY need the car.

Yea, because I know theres one part where a mechanic works on your car, so that probably won't trigger unless you have the car.

Nah, you can park the car where ever you'd like for that part. Then you fight the hunter chopper, then leave to go kill that gun. When you come back the car is magically in the shed.

I bet you could do it without, it would just take a lot longer.

Thanks for all of your help and advice on this achievement! This was one of the toughest achievements I've gotten to date! That friggin helicopter kept shooting the gnome out of my hand and it never stayed in the car no matter how hard I tried. I had to do the shoot and scoot method to pull this one off. Just wanted to say thanks...
