Curious since there is no 1998 achievement for Ep One. I wonder then if you can start an Ep Two file without having played Ep One on 1998?

In 1998 mode you can't kill anyone and is more focused on stealth.

1998 Mode is a brand new feature for Episode 2 and as said it requires non lethal takedowns. I'd imagine Episode One would be extremely difficult to play if you couldn't kill someone.

#1 How is this a thief reference...many games have done it before, and regardless of what inspired it, it's still a fairly original idea in a video game that made you kill everything. Something similar to something else isn't' a reference, a reference is a nod to something else by quoting it or using something out of or in a different context.

#6, the name of the achievement is the Thief reference, "Taffer" is a derogatory name meaning a lowlife in the Thief games. It's also called 1998 mode because that was the year the first Thief game was released.

Negative! If you TRULY are a fan, then you play it twice. First on normal and collect the logs for all the info you can get of Raptures history and the character then you play 1998 mode. don't have to Go stright fo 1998 just to proven you're a real fan, that's wrong. You prove more to be a fan the more you play a game. Even complete it once is enough but a 2nd run is even better. This is gonna be hell of'a fun because I have waited so long for this Ep. And I will ofc get all the ach and when I do, I will have all ach/100% completion BioShosk, BioShock 2 and Infinite :)

Just a tip for anyone struggling with this. Obviously you should be using Peeping Tom a lot. But the most important thing is the second modification of that vigor, which gets you unlimited invisibility as long as you stand still.
Which in turn means you can just turn invisible even while they are hostile and fire at you, they will stop shooting at you. You can only melee enemies while they are "white" or "yellow" not when "red". Each color is basically a separate state they can be in, as seen with Peeping Tom vigor. So just let them get close and bop them on the head or wait until they lose their red state. Or just sneak by, no need to fight if you can just get past.

@ #s 6 & 7 - To further cement it's connection to the BioShock universe (i.e., why the reference is even there), it might be worth noting that Ken Levine worked on the original Thief.

@6 Might want to read up on the facts next time before commenting on something you don't know about and getting it wrong in the process. 7 explained it for me though, cheers.

Are you allowed to use the crossbow? It says "shoot the crossbow at splicers from a distance to KNOCK THEM OUT silently." So it's not killing them.

Someone please explain what I have done wrong. I only used the tranquilizer, gas bolt, noisemaker, and sky hook for knocking unsuspecting enemies unconscious. I didn't receive the achievement, even though I didn't use a gun to kill anyone. HELP???

#17, did you choose 1998 Mode as the difficulty? Maybe you mistakenly accepted 1999 Mode. If you chose the right one, you won't be able to pick up a hand cannon or shotgun during your playthrough.
Also, for anybody who is thinking about going for this achievement, it's definitely possible and maybe even a good idea to go for this on your first playthrough to save time. It's not very hard at all and I basically snuck around and used nonlethal methods during my first playthrough anyways.

#18 I will make sure I to choose that option. I didn't realize that you could play 1999 mode on the DLC. Will post update once attempted again

@10 agreed. I have all achievements for the main game, CitC, and both episodes of Burial at Sea but I saved the two 1999 mode achievements and the 1998 one for last. I got the game for Christmas but didn't start the game until March (I know a year after release, how could I?) and I haven't put the game down since, I played through the game on normal first, loved it, started immediately on hard, then got the season pass, completed half of CitC, then completed Burial at Sea episodes 1 and 2 on normal, now I'm working on 1999 mode and then I'll probably do Burial at Sea episode 1 on 1999 mode, then I'll do episode 2 on 1998 to 100% the game all in one long run? it's an unforgettable experience.

I was fine with this achievement... until defending against Ryan's henchmen. One way of doing something non-lethal is to avoid confrontation as much as possible. Except that one part where even if you sneak past everyone you are blocked from leaving until you deal with them anyway... for no reason whatsoever. I hate when games force things like this on players. Way to NOT reward players for being stealthy... in a mode that requires it.

Why in the %#&@! is there a 1999 mode and 1998 mode. Pretty frustrated I just beat 1999 mode stealthily for no reason. Well onto my 3rd consecutive playthrough.

So my first playthrough of this I saw the non lethal weapon so i assumed that maybe the ending would be determined by killing or not killing (similar to Bioshock 2's ending) so i beat the entire game without killing any enemies. This was on hard mode not 1998 mode. Then I looked up the secret achievements and I, without reading carefully enough, thought it said beat the game on 1999 mode. So I did. And now I realize BOTH of these were a big waste of time. gernaeoibvelkbmzd;nljfbn;fj Why must there be so many easily confused names? And a big let down on the lack of different endings.
