Introduction:
Welcome to the 3rd installment of the Modern Warfare franchise. The game takes place right after the end of Modern Warfare 2, so you'll be right in the thick of things. Overall the game isn't all that bad, but it depends on your history with the other call of duties and its Veteran difficulty. The campaign shouldn't take more than 5-6 hours to complete, and most of the hours will be put into the Spec Ops modes. Overall this game isn't the hardest 1610 to get.
Story:
If you're looking to compete this game in one playthrough, you're going to need to head straight onto the Veteran difficulty. There's a lot of "Complete this mission" based achievements and another half of them are linked to the Veteran difficulty. So your best bet is to start on the hardest difficulty.Call of Duty is known for its Veteran difficulty but don't worry about this one. It's pretty much the same if not a little worse than MW2's. So it's a lot easier than the previous installments.
Miscellanous:
There are many misc based achievements, which you can only obtain during certain missions. Now if you're playing through on Veteran first, some of these may prove a little difficult. If any of them are proving to be hard on that difficulty, do not worry. Just carry on with the story and you can come back to them at any point on a lower setting to make it easier.
Collectables:
There's a total of 46 Intel collectables throughout the story based missions. Some will be in plain sight, while others maybe a little trickier to spot. Don't worry if you miss one while you play, as you can return to any of the previous levels and obtain it again.
Though to save yourself having to do this, please see the guide below for more details.
Spec Ops Missions/Survival:
This is where the bulk of your time will be spent. Each mode has a total of 16 maps you'll need to play. It's up to you where you which one you start on as both will take time and have it's challenges.
Missions:
This is exactly the same as MW2's Spec Ops. You'll have the chance to get 3 stars in each mission, and to get all the achievements relating to this mode, you're going to have to play and complete each one on Veteran. There's two things I'd suggest. First play the maps on a easy difficulty to get a feel for it all. See what happens, best routes etc. Next, grab a friend. Some of these will be very hard with just you. So with that extra gun on the field, it'll help a lot.
Survival:
In this mode you're going to have to play each of the 16 maps and get to wave 15. The waves go beyond this, but it's just the 15th you need to get to (no need to complete). Again, grab another friend for this. Having an extra person will move this along a lot faster.
DLC Collection #1
Introduction:
You will probably need a minimum of 3-4 playthroughs on each of the 2 new missions in order to get all the achievements. Each mission has two difficulty-tied achievements, which are stackable. If you complete "Negotiator" on Veteran from the get-go, you will unlock Shotgun Diplomacy and Skill Negotiator in one go. Similarly, if you complete "Black Ice" on Veteran from the get-go, you will unlock Slippery Slope and Ice in Your Veins. There are also specific achievement tasks you must complete during these two missions.
In "Negotiator" , you must rescue all the hostages in order to obtain Not on My Watch. It is suggested to play this mission with a good partner in order to ensure all the hostages stay alive. In "Black Ice" , you are must run over 13 enemies with your snowmobile to unlock A Baker's Dozen. Drive slowly and remember that you can always spin the vehicle around to get any enemies that you have missed.
Introduction:
You will probably need a minimum of 3-4 playthroughs on each of the 2 new missions in order to get all the achievements. Each mission has two difficulty-tied achievements, which are stackable. If you complete "Iron Clad" on Veteran from the start, you will unlock Don't Tread on Me and High Roller together. Likewise, if you complete "Killswitch" on Veteran immediately, you will unlock One-Four-One and EMPressive.... There are also specific achievement tasks you must complete during these two missions.
In "Killswitch" , the player who begins on the catwalk as Sniper-Support will be able unlock Helipocalypse for both players. There are a total of 6 helicopters to take out in this mission, all which can be shot down with the sniper and the predator drone. In "Iron Clad" , simply have your partner who is controlling the tank stay back, while you move forward and kill everyone on the road. When you get to the beach, have the tank creep up slowly in order to help take up the enemy tanks. Make sure your tank does not receive any damage during the course of the mission in order to unlock Not a Scratch.
Introduction:
You will probably need a minimum of 3-4 playthroughs on each of the 4 new missions in order to get all the achievements. Each mission has two difficulty-tied achievements, which are stackable. If you complete "Arctic Recon" on Veteran, you will unlock Stay Frosty and Sub Zero in one playthrough. If you complete "Vertigo" on Veteran right away, you will unlock Apex and Pinnacle. If "Special Delivery" is completed on Veteran right away, you will unlock Handle With Care and Deliver This upon mission completion. Lastly, a Veteran completion of "Light 'Em Up" will unlock both Siege and Lights Out in one playthrough. There are also specific achievement tasks you must complete during these two missions.
In "Arctic Recon", you are tasked with completing the mission in under 3:30 in order to obtain dr0n3d. This can easily be achieved on the easiest difficulty setting with a good Co-Op parter, or even solo. In "Vertigo" , you must destroy all the choppers within the mission for Flyswatter. There are a total of 14 choppers in this mission that must be taken out. In order to unlock To Jugger or to Jugger-Naut, you must also kill all the juggernauts once they land on the roof of the building on the Veteran difficulty. There is plenty ammunition on the roof and you begin the mission with claymores, which will serve extremely useful. Both achievements are better done solo, rather than with a partner.
In "Special Delivery", you can stack both Discriminating Buyer and Untouchable in one playthrough, but it is suggested you are playing on the easiest difficulty. Simply run through the level and call in each of the three care packages in the beginning. You must use all of them before completing the mission. Make sure to only call in/use one Self-Revive for the second achievement. Lastly, Deer in Headlights can be obtained right in the beginning of "Light 'Em Up" by knifing 5 enemies in a row who are stunned. As the helicopter flies around, the spotlight will stun the enemies below, allowing you to get your five knife kills. This is best done with a partner, but only one player can get it at a time.
